So true man, meta gaming has ruined a lot of games, but I think that this is a problem that mainly affects ppl between 25 and 35, it happened to me with dota, lol and a lot of games, also some youtubers that are close to those ages. Experimenting in games can be so rewarding, you figure out something strong and then you can use it knowing that it’s yours, and sometimes messing around and not caring that your KDR is below 0.5 is also fun
I remember playing smash bros growing up was just about picking your favorite character with all items all the way up. Now it’s just about picking the best character with no items on.

Casual TF2 has been one of the few safe havens for just goofing around, even though the game is old, well known and has been badly mistreated by valve, casual is still casual even after all these years
This was a great video and description of how being able to know everything can be a curse. In my own experiences knowing everything makes me not wanna play the game anymore. For example, I like playing me some Minecraft, and I’ve been playing for 10 years now. However, I’ve watched a bunch of videos and just played the game itself so much that everything is predictable and can be calculated to always make me come out on top. Example: Yeah remember how creepers used to be an issue? Well just place a block between you and the creeper and you take 0 damage because explosion damage is taken at the lower half and the players hitbox. Wanna know how I know that? Its not from playing the game, its from hearing it through youtube. Its so obscure that no one except the devs themselves would know it, yet theres players who dig deep and uncover these things. The only thing that excites me when playing games nowadays is knowing jackshit and learning through trial and error, just like I USED to as a child. Goofing off with friends is also fun I guess...
I get where you're coming from, but I feel like people overexaggerate this issue. I will say games have gotten WAY more competitive, but I still find people fucking around and trolling fairly regularly. Obviously competitive games (like Dota, League, etc) will have more people try harding but even then I still see people playing Dark Harvest Soraka in my league games. And hell, if you get the right group of friends, then your teammates won't even yell at you for sucking and you can all mess around.
man, that last point hit hard with me. I've always loved puzzle games - even as a kid i played them in the computer lab at school - but there's been a ton of times where i have to force myself to just come back to it later rather than looking it up. and other times, i do look it up - because it's not very fun to be stuck on the same damn level for 3 days in a row or some shit.
Why I still play video games? Kid me: Because they are fun Teen me: It help to escape from reality Adult me: "Breaking barriers" with my performance to make my return on investing into RUclips Gaming. In today's world, it is about how good you are equaling how much money you can earn in tournaments. And I have to say, the opportunities are near limitless. Happy competition to all gamers, especially the pre-teens that want to make their first $100.
CoD Zombies is a good example of this for me. I loved WaW because the Easter eggs were just hints built into the map. Then BO1 made it more complex as the maps went on. While I love most of BO2, the zombies mode just got more and more out of hand. Instead of just finding things in the map, you had to shoot stuff out of the map to make an item drop, than you need to take and build to something else
I can't wait for some gamedev to have the idea of making games with RUclips and videos in mind (no, Hello Neighbour's attitude towards theory videos from MatPat doesn't count). Like, they could make a game that gives a somewhat unique experience for each player and has many options for different playstyles, in such a way that the game itself is almost a personality test of some sorts. This way, no matter how much the RUclipsrs play the game, the game provides some unique content that will benefit the channels and will allow the viewers to experience the game for themselves without having the same experience as the RUclipsrs. There are two Markiplier videos in which he plays two games that basically interview the player with questions and then tells something about the player. Markiplier's experience with those games was unique because of his choices, so I can go and play those games myself and get an unique experience if I don't do what Markiplier did.

I played Borderlands 3 on the day of the release without getting any spoilers or tips. One of the big bosses (Grimward) I lasted like 40 minutes to kill him with the weapons I got. Then after I finish the game I went into Twitch just to know that streamers killed Grimward in 4 seconds or less… and they are farming it.

Yeah, most fun l had was just playing barbie in Cod Cold War multiplayer, Current loadout is The Colt Commando and the M16a2 Dressed to look as similar as possible. i call it "The Selector Switch" or Trying to make a period accurate RPK from the AK47 because Fuck sights, fuck camo this is the 80's, Iron sights only, nyet rifle is fine!
@@joenathan8594 I have a similar class in CW that’s an AK47 with a short barrel and no stock, and an AK74u with no attachments. I also have a class that’s just a nail gun and sledgehammer. My favorite class to use though is a .410 Ironhide and .44 Magnum with Molotovs. The game is a ton more fun when you don’t take it serious and play for fun over playing strictly to win.
youre fully right. back when i played codm, the meta weapon was the ONLY weapon to use. dont want to? sure, but how does that end? you get stomped into the ground at 4 kills 17 deaths. what happens the next season? meta gets nerfed into nothingness and a new weapon takes the place. thats the other problem, "seasons" where content is just thrown at you most of the time with some form of extra rewards you wont use if you get them. personally i prefer occasional updates and events, not season this and season that. also, why do they just have to restart the whole chain? codm is past its 3rd season 1 and ive heard other games are like this too
For quite some time now I've been wondering why I stopped being interested in multiplayer games, this particular video helped me understand why. After consuming every available piece of strategy information, sifting through opposing opinions, putting acquired knowledge to practice and failing most of the time, grinding on and on playing for hundreds of hours against players who've put in thousands, games stop being fun and start being work with no compensation... and for what? To prove you're the proverbial "boss of this gym"? Having grown up with games from the NES to the PS2 era maybe I'm a bit too old-fashioned but I'll take enjoyable singleplayer experiences over multiplayer any day. People tryhard multiplayer way too much nowadays.
Only recently discovered this channel but this is some of the most hilarious content I’ve seen in a while, it takes me back to classic gaming you tubers from years ago. How this channel doesn’t have at least a 6 figure sub count is completely beyond me.
I agree with this soooo much, I play stuff like warzone, hypixel, sometimes even Roblox shooters and EVERYONE is using the “meta guns” “meta strats” and it’s just sad, like I play warzone is because it’s fun, not because I wanna grind the game out till hell and back same with Minecraft, I think to me this also applies with battlefield, I love chaotic, crazy battles that are super cinematic and battlefield gives that to me but then people using the “meta” ruin it
Grinding is fun for some people. And for some reason to me playing casually is boring. That's why I hate people complaining about tryhards just because some people just can't have fun and saying the way I play is no fun. And I have school and a sport so you can get better by effectively practicing.
I REALLY enjoyed playing fortnite when it first came out because it added this new mechanic to fps: Building. Nobody really knew how to do it well, it was just place a wall or a ramp to stop yourself getting shot at, I think season 4-5 for me were the best ones because everyone had gradually improved their gameplay to that they were pretty good at building and knew a few of the best loot paths etc. Now that game is just a clusterfuck of sweaty kids cranking 90’s on me. Thinking back I actually have a quite a lot of fond memories, like when they made a burger in the middle of the Nevada desert, they were the first fps to actually bring a proper storyline to their games. I remember being so hyped with the rocket event and I remember sitting around with a couple of friends playing fortnite mobile because one of my friends got the early release codes for it. Damn, that took me back, I really can’t wait to see what the next big game is.
As someone who only does 'off meta', it does like it can be a little annoying when everyone just plays what they're is good, and can't actually critically think about something that is different. The raising of the average skill in games is great for competitive players I guess, but I don't even want to imagine a truly player coming to a game like League of Legends for the first time to play casually. There's just too many things that aren't even taught by the game itself that you don't only need to know to play better, but also to not be continually harassed by your teammates. Even games vs bots over on League get toxic somehow.
Remind me of how i felt good finding all secrets (except for 2) in doom1 shareware version and finish it on ultra-violence with fast monster enabled without looking for information
I have found this with all multiplayer games these days. I think that RUclips, Twitch and Esports has conditioned people to think that they have to take games seriously and play competitively all the time to have fun. Back in the day, you could come home and play multiplayer casually and you wouldn’t have to stress. You could “try hard” if you wanted but it wasn’t necessary to have fun, and you didn’t feel like you were left behind for not taking a game seriously. Now, these days you have to sweat your nuts off and have your nose glued to your screen, with you headphones on full blast analysing every sound that comes from the game. You have to have the reflexes of a god. It’s just so stressful. If you’re like me and work a full time job, when you come home you may want to play a game for an hour or two and just kick back and have fun. I find myself getting more stressed playing multiplayer games than I am when I’m actually working these days and that shouldn’t be the case. And it’s because every game I’m in, the playerbase seems to take it so seriously like it’s an Esports tournament final or something. But I’ve also got myself thinking, what do all these sweats and try hards actually do in real life? Because to get as good as some of these people you really have to dedicate your whole day to getting better. Even when I was younger and had more free time, I still didn’t have enough time in my day to get as good as some of these try hards, I always had something else going on. You can’t get as good as these people if you work full time, or have anything going on other than playing games, there’s no way. That’s why these RUclips personalities are so good, because it’s their job to play these games, it’s all they really do. Maybe I’m being over critical of these people but it just makes me think.
That's why I enjoy playing on lower ranks. It's only there where I can stop hyper focusing on catching every random sound, use things I like, turn my FOV back to 90 and still get an awesome time chatting with chill teammates
This is my problem with games like Fortnite, and Warzone, In Fortnite everyone builds the same, and uses the same loadouts. In Warzone everybody moves around the same, and everybody uses the same weapons with the same attachments, and the same skin. Warzone is way worse about it though, the loadout drops only make every fight feel the same.
When RDR2 came out, and the internet discovered cheat codes exist. It was so much fun trying to find cheat codes that were not yet found by other people. I looked in the most obscure places and it was so much fun! Now they are all known. But what makes RDR2 so special. People are still uncovering secrets in 2022! Like the other day. People discovered that people’s pupils get bigger and smaller with different light. People are picking apart every detail, and it is incredible!
Luckily, I've never been affected by this because I don't really play online games and I don't look to the internet for anything regarding single-player games.

I agree a lot with the idea behind the mystery. Like playing games and having that sense of confusion and like what will happen next type feel to them Is such a good feeling. Like 12 year old me watched markiplyer play through subnautica and then I played through it myself and felt absolutely nothing. I played through subnautica below zero and had a much better time discovering like cool ass fish, it was a lot more impactful than my experience with the original where I already knew what was coming.
In 2000 I did work experience at Nintendo Australia HQ and spent most of my time in the game counsellor's or as we called "game guru" dept. Internet walkthroughs existed, but they still got calls. I think some people preferred the human aspect of it, even at $1 a minute.
I don't believe RUclips ruined gaming, level playthroughs have helped me immensely with games I wouldn't of otherwise been able to beat. (Most notably, Mafia 1 almost 20 years after it was released)
I remember for dragon Ball z Budokai Tenkaichi the fun and excitement I had when in game you have to fuse character earrings together to unlock new characters and I was playing with that character for hours until i unlocked another new character RUclips took all that away for video games cuz some RUclips will upload hidden location /Easter eggs/secret weapons which makes people feel like the game's not worth the price cuz they're not really exploring to find it they're being told where it at spoils the fun
Back in the 90s nobody was there to tell you how to play the game accept word-of-mouth from your friends at the playground at school now we have RUclips where we having oversaturation of knowledge thus Discovery is being thrown out the window for convenience
Honestly wish that the feel of conquering puzzles in games wasn't corrupted by RUclips as much. Recently I played Half-Life 1 and I had to search the answers for a couple of Puzzles, however for the ones I learnt myself, it felt so much more satisfying.
i think that there are few exceptions to this like TF2. the game does a shit job at teaching new players and the game has so much variability that even if you use the "best strat" there are still playstyles that could be just as effective
I have purposely made it a rule for myself to not look up anything about Elden Ring while I play it. It allows you to be surprised when you come across cool shit, and you kinda have to fuck around and experiment with gear to find a good strategy to kill bosses

If I want to buy a game I usually want to be sure that I´m gonna enjoy it, so I watch it on twitch first, where I learn what it´s about and some basics, so I rarely go into games blind. Finding shit out for yourself is one of the best part of gaming especially in roguelikes :D I read somebody´s comment on thread about leaving pubs in Apex, and according to some people "win in unranked holds no value", that was yesterday and it hit me how much the gaming has changed. (Even though I wasn´t around in like 2012 and such) There are games that almost require wiki as obligatory reading (eg EUIV) and that´s also completely fine with me, each game is different.
the most fun I have ever had with a multiplayer game was the day overwatch came out, because nobody knew what to do, and you couldn’t just look up anything about the meta or optimal gameplay because it hadn’t been established yet. Everyone was just having fun, after a couple months though it became a sweatstorm of everyone tryna be the most meta, esport Widowmaker, Moria, Sombrero, Crapstion or whatever

The freedom to enjoy a game how you want is replaced with the idea that someone on youtube is doing it better or knows something you dont. Oh look the game is now trivialized and im bored. If the game is competitive then yeah good luck goofing around in games like league or cod, everyone running the best loadouts and sliding all over the place like theyre on meth so you better join in.
it actually fucking hurts how much i played LoL just for me to also turn into what i hated from the game, try harding even on casual and them i finally noticed how shit the balancing of the game started to get and stopped all together, seeing my favorite champions getting nerfed to the ground to then get buffed RIGHT BEFORE A NEW SKIN RELEASES (i even talked to this to my friend and his darius getting a buff 2 patches before a new 20 dollars skin released). the skill ceilings in moba games is incredibly goddamn high by how much broken shit the devs keep in or keep out without telling the players. i also tried streaming very few times but if you don't have a microphone? basically forget about it, people will simple check you for 10 seconds before getting out or ignoring you alltogether. you can literally have a twitch chat on screen with a literal *i can read the chat type something :)* stream overlay right above it and people still don't interact, most of the times it feels souless which is funny considering that shouldn't be a huge to fuck platform that people go to chat and talk about the game they are seeing on the moment? if you want to have fun, you can't expect reactions or even actual viewer ship by doing textless or even talkless videos if they aren't a literal solution to a problem or a trick, but even if its a trick mostly speedrunners will see it or no one again². your point of looking on youtube made me remember of 2 instances on both darksiders 1 and 2, on 1 there is a wall that is needed to for progression and the game doesn't teaches you explicitely how to reach it with the grappling hook, i needed to look it up when i tried to replay the game a few years ago but when i did that. i literally remembered myself replying it on the 360 looking throught the menus and finding the solution there which does tells you a lot about our own patience and IQ dropping throught the years of gaming. on darksiders 2 near the end game dungeons when you obtain a clone tool you are supposed to throw a grenade to your other self which the game also never tutorialises that to you, i already knew that due to me fucking around enough with the mechanics, but when i looked it up the amount of people looking for the solution staggered me. it does shows that peopels attention span and patience did droppped a lot in the past decade and its a complete disaster for the gaming industry to reach such low level.
yeah and with this info people optimize the fun out of gaming, even online. so unless you want get owned all day reading guides to make you the very best is just how it be.

I've never once looked up, best builds, or best items, or even strats, for any specific game. During my mmorpg years, I was apart of a top 10 worldwide raiding guild. I learned what worked best by playing the game. This took me years upon years of experience. (None of those games I still play) Eventually I had people asking me how I was doing stuff, which was cool, I was happy to help, but it still didn't close the skill gap when they tried to imitate what I was doing. Experience will almost always beat out imitators. I've also found most of today's online games to be far too easy. Catered to the crybaby community who complain "It's too hard.", or "such and such class, skill, or weapon is too op." with devs listening to them and nerfing things that didn't need to be nerfed. There are a few exceptions and some stuff really was too op, but those examples are few and far between. That said, the biggest problem I have with today's online games stems from the gaming community itself. Way too many children, trolls, griefers, tryhards, elitists, and of course cheaters. In fact, it's gotten so bad I tend to avoid playing online games and when I do, I turn chat windows off if I'm able to, I refuse to use my headphones and mic, and just play solo. Some games I quit playing entirely because the community was just way too toxic, or devs themselves ruined the game. Another thing that I don't understand, and for whatever reason, people think it's OK, is people have gotten the idea that trolling is cool. It's not. You're just as bad as griefers and cheaters. Why? Because you fall into the same category as the people who refuse to let others just enjoy playing the game. This may sound like a rant to some and that's fine. This is my opinion and how I view how far the gaming community has fallen. I do think I know exactly what I'm talking about though. Why? Because I'm someone who was born before the internet even existed. I've seen gaming go from the Commodore 64, to modern PC's, from Atari to PS5. A good majority of my life has been spent gaming, and what I've seen from most of today's gaming community is disgusting. What's worse is it's become so commonplace, the community finds it acceptable and it's even tolerated when it shouldn't be. Developers no longer care either, all they care about is money. Anyone who's been a gamer as long as I have should know exactly what I'm talking about.
This is exactly why I stopped following any news about games. Unless you want everything about an experience sabotaged by preconceptions, leaked details, and especially hype, why would you follow what the big media and pop culture would have you believe? In this day and age it would seem too hard to avoid such things, but to all you young ones out there, take it from your parent’s generation, it’s worth the wait. When the piece of media is released into a well established and well supported environment where the community can grow into a healthy mature state through shared experiences and cooperation is the backbone of a lifelong memory.

I played Borderlands 3 on the day of the release without getting any spoilers or tips. One of the big bosses (Grimward) I lasted like 40 minutes to kill him with the weapons I got. Then after I finish the game I went into Twitch just to know that streamers killed Grimward in 4 seconds or less… and they are farming it.
i, too, like to play games like a bumbling idiot. it’s fun to take the utter piss out of a multiplayer game and play it the opposite of how it wants you to.

Yeah, most fun l had was just playing barbie in Cod Cold War multiplayer, Current loadout is The Colt Commando and the M16a2 Dressed to look as similar as possible. i call it "The Selector Switch" or Trying to make a period accurate RPK from the AK47 because Fuck sights, fuck camo this is the 80's, Iron sights only, nyet rifle is fine!
@@joenathan8594 I have a similar class in CW that’s an AK47 with a short barrel and no stock, and an AK74u with no attachments. I also have a class that’s just a nail gun and sledgehammer. My favorite class to use though is a .410 Ironhide and .44 Magnum with Molotovs. The game is a ton more fun when you don’t take it serious and play for fun over playing strictly to win.
youre fully right. back when i played codm, the meta weapon was the ONLY weapon to use. dont want to? sure, but how does that end? you get stomped into the ground at 4 kills 17 deaths. what happens the next season? meta gets nerfed into nothingness and a new weapon takes the place.
thats the other problem, "seasons" where content is just thrown at you most of the time with some form of extra rewards you wont use if you get them. personally i prefer occasional updates and events, not season this and season that.
also, why do they just have to restart the whole chain? codm is past its 3rd season 1 and ive heard other games are like this too
It makes sense to restart seasons when it's a new game, but the same game getting multiple season 1's is very silly.

For quite some time now I've been wondering why I stopped being interested in multiplayer games, this particular video helped me understand why.
After consuming every available piece of strategy information, sifting through opposing opinions, putting acquired knowledge to practice and failing most of the time, grinding on and on playing for hundreds of hours against players who've put in thousands, games stop being fun and start being work with no compensation... and for what? To prove you're the proverbial "boss of this gym"?
Having grown up with games from the NES to the PS2 era maybe I'm a bit too old-fashioned but I'll take enjoyable singleplayer experiences over multiplayer any day. People tryhard multiplayer way too much nowadays.
Only recently discovered this channel but this is some of the most hilarious content I’ve seen in a while, it takes me back to classic gaming you tubers from years ago. How this channel doesn’t have at least a 6 figure sub count is completely beyond me.
I agree with this soooo much, I play stuff like warzone, hypixel, sometimes even Roblox shooters and EVERYONE is using the “meta guns” “meta strats” and it’s just sad, like I play warzone is because it’s fun, not because I wanna grind the game out till hell and back same with Minecraft, I think to me this also applies with battlefield, I love chaotic, crazy battles that are super cinematic and battlefield gives that to me but then people using the “meta” ruin it
Grinding is fun for some people. And for some reason to me playing casually is boring. That's why I hate people complaining about tryhards just because some people just can't have fun and saying the way I play is no fun. And I have school and a sport so you can get better by effectively practicing.
I REALLY enjoyed playing fortnite when it first came out because it added this new mechanic to fps: Building. Nobody really knew how to do it well, it was just place a wall or a ramp to stop yourself getting shot at, I think season 4-5 for me were the best ones because everyone had gradually improved their gameplay to that they were pretty good at building and knew a few of the best loot paths etc. Now that game is just a clusterfuck of sweaty kids cranking 90’s on me. Thinking back I actually have a quite a lot of fond memories, like when they made a burger in the middle of the Nevada desert, they were the first fps to actually bring a proper storyline to their games. I remember being so hyped with the rocket event and I remember sitting around with a couple of friends playing fortnite mobile because one of my friends got the early release codes for it. Damn, that took me back, I really can’t wait to see what the next big game is.
I actually tried the No-Build and found it fun. But Yeah...I look forward to that next game that feels like everyone is playing.

As someone who only does 'off meta', it does like it can be a little annoying when everyone just plays what they're is good, and can't actually critically think about something that is different.
The raising of the average skill in games is great for competitive players I guess, but I don't even want to imagine a truly player coming to a game like League of Legends for the first time to play casually. There's just too many things that aren't even taught by the game itself that you don't only need to know to play better, but also to not be continually harassed by your teammates. Even games vs bots over on League get toxic somehow.
Fr, that's why I only stick to not so competitive games like Minecraft or GTAO or singleplayers

I have found this with all multiplayer games these days. I think that RUclips, Twitch and Esports has conditioned people to think that they have to take games seriously and play competitively all the time to have fun. Back in the day, you could come home and play multiplayer casually and you wouldn’t have to stress. You could “try hard” if you wanted but it wasn’t necessary to have fun, and you didn’t feel like you were left behind for not taking a game seriously. Now, these days you have to sweat your nuts off and have your nose glued to your screen, with you headphones on full blast analysing every sound that comes from the game. You have to have the reflexes of a god. It’s just so stressful. If you’re like me and work a full time job, when you come home you may want to play a game for an hour or two and just kick back and have fun. I find myself getting more stressed playing multiplayer games than I am when I’m actually working these days and that shouldn’t be the case. And it’s because every game I’m in, the playerbase seems to take it so seriously like it’s an Esports tournament final or something. But I’ve also got myself thinking, what do all these sweats and try hards actually do in real life? Because to get as good as some of these people you really have to dedicate your whole day to getting better. Even when I was younger and had more free time, I still didn’t have enough time in my day to get as good as some of these try hards, I always had something else going on. You can’t get as good as these people if you work full time, or have anything going on other than playing games, there’s no way. That’s why these RUclips personalities are so good, because it’s their job to play these games, it’s all they really do. Maybe I’m being over critical of these people but it just makes me think.
That's why I enjoy playing on lower ranks. It's only there where I can stop hyper focusing on catching every random sound, use things I like, turn my FOV back to 90 and still get an awesome time chatting with chill teammates
This is my problem with games like Fortnite, and Warzone, In Fortnite everyone builds the same, and uses the same loadouts. In Warzone everybody moves around the same, and everybody uses the same weapons with the same attachments, and the same skin. Warzone is way worse about it though, the loadout drops only make every fight feel the same.

When RDR2 came out, and the internet discovered cheat codes exist. It was so much fun trying to find cheat codes that were not yet found by other people. I looked in the most obscure places and it was so much fun! Now they are all known. But what makes RDR2 so special. People are still uncovering secrets in 2022!

I agree a lot with the idea behind the mystery. Like playing games and having that sense of confusion and like what will happen next type feel to them Is such a good feeling. Like 12 year old me watched markiplyer play through subnautica and then I played through it myself and felt absolutely nothing. I played through subnautica below zero and had a much better time discovering like cool ass fish, it was a lot more impactful than my experience with the original where I already knew what was coming.

In 2000 I did work experience at Nintendo Australia HQ and spent most of my time in the game counsellor's or as we called "game guru" dept. Internet walkthroughs existed, but they still got calls. I think some people preferred the human aspect of it, even at $1 a minute.

I don't believe RUclips ruined gaming, level playthroughs have helped me immensely with games I wouldn't of otherwise been able to beat. (Most notably, Mafia 1 almost 20 years after it was released)

I remember for dragon Ball z Budokai Tenkaichi the fun and excitement I had when in game you have to fuse character earrings together to unlock new characters and I was playing with that character for hours until i unlocked another new character RUclips took all that away for video games cuz some RUclips will upload hidden location /Easter eggs/secret weapons which makes people feel like the game's not worth the price cuz they're not really exploring to find it they're being told where it at spoils the fun
Back in the 90s nobody was there to tell you how to play the game accept word-of-mouth from your friends at the playground at school now we have RUclips where we having oversaturation of knowledge thus Discovery is being thrown out the window for convenience
Honestly wish that the feel of conquering puzzles in games wasn't corrupted by RUclips as much.
Recently I played Half-Life 1 and I had to search the answers for a couple of Puzzles, however for the ones I learnt myself, it felt so much more satisfying.

i think that there are few exceptions to this like TF2. the game does a shit job at teaching new players and the game has so much variability that even if you use the "best strat" there are still playstyles that could be just as effective
I have purposely made it a rule for myself to not look up anything about Elden Ring while I play it. It allows you to be surprised when you come across cool shit, and you kinda have to fuck around and experiment with gear to find a good strategy to kill bosses

If I want to buy a game I usually want to be sure that I´m gonna enjoy it, so I watch it on twitch first, where I learn what it´s about and some basics, so I rarely go into games blind. Finding shit out for yourself is one of the best part of gaming especially in roguelikes :D
I read somebody´s comment on thread about leaving pubs in Apex, and according to some people "win in unranked holds no value", that was yesterday and it hit me how much the gaming has changed. (Even though I wasn´t around in like 2012 and such)

the most fun I have ever had with a multiplayer game was the day overwatch came out, because nobody knew what to do, and you couldn’t just look up anything about the meta or optimal gameplay because it hadn’t been established yet. Everyone was just having fun, after a couple months though it became a sweatstorm of everyone tryna be the most meta, esport Widowmaker, Moria, Sombrero, Crapstion or whatever

man ive been saying the internet ruined games for years. Right on the nose with it, everyone is sweating their ass off trying to be the best or emulate the best. Spending just as much time watching streamers or how to vids instead of playing the game. The freedom to enjoy a game how you want is replaced with the idea that someone on youtube is doing it better or knows something you dont. Oh look the game is now trivialized and im bored. If the game is competitive then yeah good luck goofing around in games like league or cod, everyone running the best loadouts and sliding all over the place like theyre on meth so you better join in.
it actually fucking hurts how much i played LoL just for me to also turn into what i hated from the game, try harding even on casual and them i finally noticed how shit the balancing of the game started to get and stopped all together, seeing my favorite champions getting nerfed to the ground to then get buffed RIGHT BEFORE A NEW SKIN RELEASES (i even talked to this to my friend and his darius getting a buff 2 patches before a new 20 dollars skin released).
the skill ceilings in moba games is incredibly goddamn high by how much broken shit the devs keep in or keep out without telling the players.
i also tried streaming very few times but if you don't have a microphone? basically forget about it, people will simple check you for 10 seconds before getting out or ignoring you alltogether.
you can literally have a twitch chat on screen with a literal *i can read the chat type something :)* stream overlay right above it and people still don't interact, most of the times it feels souless which is funny considering that shouldn't be a huge to fuck platform that people go to chat and talk about the game they are seeing on the moment?
if you want to have fun, you can't expect reactions or even actual viewer ship by doing textless or even talkless videos if they aren't a literal solution to a problem or a trick, but even if its a trick mostly speedrunners will see it or no one again².
your point of looking on youtube made me remember of 2 instances on both darksiders 1 and 2, on 1 there is a wall that is needed to for progression and the game doesn't teaches you explicitely how to reach it with the grappling hook, i needed to look it up when i tried to replay the game a few years ago but when i did that. i literally remembered myself replying it on the 360 looking throught the menus and finding the solution there which does tells you a lot about our own patience and IQ dropping throught the years of gaming.
on darksiders 2 near the end game dungeons when you obtain a clone tool you are supposed to throw a grenade to your other self which the game also never tutorialises that to you, i already knew that due to me fucking around enough with the mechanics, but when i looked it up the amount of people looking for the solution staggered me.
it does shows that peopels attention span and patience did droppped a lot in the past decade and its a complete disaster for the gaming industry to reach such low level.

I've never once looked up, best builds, or best items, or even strats, for any specific game. During my mmorpg years, I was apart of a top 10 worldwide raiding guild. I learned what worked best by playing the game. This took me years upon years of experience. (None of those games I still play)
Eventually I had people asking me how I was doing stuff, which was cool, I was happy to help, but it still didn't close the skill gap when they tried to imitate what I was doing. Experience will almost always beat out imitators.
I've also found most of today's online games to be far too easy. Catered to the crybaby community who complain "It's too hard.", or "such and such class, skill, or weapon is too op." with devs listening to them and nerfing things that didn't need to be nerfed. There are a few exceptions and some stuff really was too op, but those examples are few and far between.
That said, the biggest problem I have with today's online games stems from the gaming community itself. Way too many children, trolls, griefers, tryhards, elitists, and of course cheaters. In fact, it's gotten so bad I tend to avoid playing online games and when I do, I turn chat windows off if I'm able to, I refuse to use my headphones and mic, and just play solo. Some games I quit playing entirely because the community was just way too toxic, or devs themselves ruined the game.
Another thing that I don't understand, and for whatever reason, people think it's OK, is people have gotten the idea that trolling is cool. It's not. You're just as bad as griefers and cheaters. Why? Because you fall into the same category as the people who refuse to let others just enjoy playing the game.
This may sound like a rant to some and that's fine. This is my opinion and how I view how far the gaming community has fallen. I do think I know exactly what I'm talking about though. Why? Because I'm someone who was born before the internet even existed.
I've seen gaming go from the Commodore 64, to modern PC's, from Atari to PS5. A good majority of my life has been spent gaming, and what I've seen from most of today's gaming community is disgusting. What's worse is it's become so commonplace, the community finds it acceptable and it's even tolerated when it shouldn't be. Developers no longer care either, all they care about is money. Anyone who's been a gamer as long as I have should know exactly what I'm talking about.
I mean, it's fun to sometimes just go absolute dikhead mode, but if you're always playing like that, there's definitely something wrong with your life
This is exactly why I stopped following any news about games. Unless you want everything about an experience sabotaged by preconceptions, leaked details, and especially hype, why would you follow what the big media and pop culture would have you believe? In this day and age it would seem too hard to avoid such things, but to all you young ones out there, take it from your parent’s generation, it’s worth the wait. When the piece of media is released into a well established and well supported environment where the community can grow into a healthy mature state through shared experiences and cooperation is the backbone of a lifelong memory.
