The Building of the Iroquois Long House 2005

- This longhouse was built according to plans that I found on the New York State Education Department website. It was built on Hiawatha Island in Owego, NY. The video shows how we built this longhouse "for the people". It came to me in a dream where I was told to build a longhouse. When I asked why, I was told "for the people." I hope you enjoy the video.
Unfortunately, the longhouse did not survive 40+ inches of snow that came in overnight on December, 2021. It will always live in the memories of those who built it and on RUclips.

shows the hardships they faced. Imagine being I. A blizzard with no roof
@@nonyobussiness3440they had a tarp over it 😂😂
@@He_is_wolf nah natives didn’t invent the roof yet. They only knew framing
So cool that these people built these, and I get to see it being made today! Thank you!
Good on you for keeping the spirit of your people and culture alive.
I'm reading a book by Joseph Boyden about the Huron and Iroquois called "The Orenda". Your Long House gives me a great visual as I read. Miigwech.
Been doing research for longhouses. This is amazing! Thanks for creating this video! I found it very fascinating and helpful.
micanikko Thank you for the kind words.
motoprof1441 You're welcome. :)

A lot of effort and passion. Hope you got to finish it! Thank you for sharing
Unfortunately we never got to finish it.
The Haudenosaunee were an incredible people, and their social structure was top-notch (second best confederational structure in history IMO, perhaps only surpassed by the Swiss). It's a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve
Love this! Thanks so much for sharing.
Looks like a good time. I think I'm going to try this. Looks very simple but not easy. Thank you
No Pat, we were never able to find bark for the sides. It's still on the island and standing tall.
It is a great work you did there. I hope one day the project will be continued :)
Beautiful and well done.

Awesome! How skillful. Thanks for the great info!
thank you for this clear video showing how to make a building of all natural locally grown materials. I think of building that way with different materials in a different region (Caribbean).
Not only the "new technology", the experience of knowing that something will work properly is a great advantage. Folks then would try something only for it to fail then try another way. We today know what worked and what didn't
Great story,Na' kiwa.
Amazing!! Well done...
The traditional background music is wonderfully melodic
Great video! The frame would be also great for building a greenhouse on budget. Thank you for taking the time to create the video.
That's exactly what I was thinking too; or even a fort for old and young alike
Amazing & beautiful!.. We hope you ended up finishing it. We are doing a project on it & this was very helpful..
Interesting project. You should consider adding Jigonseseh to your opening credits as she was instrumental in the process of forming the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. I hope you were able to complete your dream.
It helped me learn more about the Iroquois and now i am so happy!!!
It’s disrespectful to call them Iroquois.
@@bootscuffmagee4199 Yeah, should be called the wa to pa ko wa mo iwa
Beautiful work. I hope one day you will finish it and a family can live in it. This would please those who lived there before. All the important things are in our dreams.
I think you're wonderful, I love what's going on here
Pretty sweet. Thinking about building one myself in northern MI.
It was a very fun project and sleeping in it is just awesome with the glow of the fire. I just wished I could have barked the sides instead of the heavy vinyl covering.
Good luck with yours and please post a pic if you finish it.
they were known for smelting copper too
I will be building a small 6 nation village, mostly of eastern woodland Cherokee style I'm my home state of WV. Our long house is goin to be about this size.
I am actually doing a project on this thx, i find this video very helpful .
It survived the flooding, but just barely. The water was just below the longhouse and it never went that high.
I'm Navajo
at the begining i was very confused as to what you were building since i got here through a video detailing the construction of viking longhouses, i have to say i am thoroughly impressed with what you have built which i can only identify as an "indian" structure, i say indian in inverted commas since i am aware that there were many different tribes and i know nothing about any of them. I am thankful i watched this video though because i learnt something new today so thank you.
This video right here, my brothers were building this, we recently checked up on it and it sadly it didn't survive
Thanks I build many simple shelter styles 😉
Amazing .
Thank you!
Be interesting to see you build everything in the old way. Tools and everything else.
Cool
I'm very glad I came across this.v
The auto generated English subtitles @ 7:30 had my sides in orbit
respect! 8-)
literally, JUST BELOW the longhouse... the mud line in the grass where the water was stopped just feet before the structure when we went out there a couple days after the flood (probably too soon to be out there to be honest, my little 6 horse mercury was struggling against that current! )
I loved this it is truly both beautiful AND practical. Loved the beds
This would make a fine tiny house. If you really want tiny, look into building a wigwam ;-)
it would be cool if u did a Navajo Hogan.(hoogan)
Through some kind of amazing coincidence I just found this video. First of all I love the video I think that it is great that you actually followed through with your vision. Second, when you say it is "for the people" does that mean it is available for the public to visit? The coincidence is that I actually live very close to Owego and out of all the thousands of videos on youtube I found this video. I am interested in building a longhouse in the Binghamton area. Anyway great video thanks for posting.
The island is open to the public for free. You just have to have a boat to get there or be a good swimmer :-)
all right that's awesome! I'll make my way there sometime (probably when we get some warmer weather).
You can see it on Google Earth. That's kind of cool.
when removing barrk with a stone axe like they would have done the handle of the axe would have been in a wedge shape on the end so whe the tree was dow they pop the axe out an use the long wedge like dandle to ttake off bark easy
Also, we will be building several small wickiups for the rein actors to stay in. The longhouse will be used more for a social place and a teaching center for the public. Sorry for all these comments! Lol
please finish it.
jesse rush I strongly agree
What did you do for the foundation?
I grew up on Marshland Road but moved away in the '80s. Sorry I never saw it. Looks like it was a great project. Is it gone after all the flooding?
Noice
Actually, Haudenosaunee means "people who build the longhouse."
Great work! I grew up outside of Waverly, NY, so I know exactly where Hiawatha Island is. Has the bark been put on the Longhouse?
What are the hoop poles made of
Are you a native american? If the answer is yes, I'm super happy and glad you're keeping your traditions and way of life alive.
If the answer is no, it's still pretty cool what you're doing.
Music made it hard to pay attention
did you ever finish it
Great job on the video! :D But what's up with not putting MY Native name in the credits?? I feel so left out!...although I guess I shouldn't complain since I avoided the camera the entire time :P
Hopefully I'll be able to get back to the Island again-it's just a wonderful place!
Wow, that's cool (that you're a native american). I'm fascinated by indigenous peoples and ethnic groups. Do you and your people still build and/or use longhouses occassionally?
We are building a small model of a longhouse in school
4:38 "ancient times"?
I saw that drill
hi aidan
I watched is at my school
Good to know that since that was my original goal when I made the video. Thanks for the post.
Ok
Don't know what its about, I can only understand one voice at one time.
U had time for beds and other things but couldn't do the bark isn't that the first one of the first steps
Did you guys ever finish it?
No, 40 inches of snow destroyed it.
@@motoprof1441 Well the video is 2005 and the snow storm was 2021... so I figured it might have been finished before it was destroyed... loved the video tho.
im a third grader
HAHAH now ur a seventh grader 👺👺🤖
Everything is done for a reason. Trying to use one fire to keep warm four families isn't going to work like this. The reason the fires were between two families like it was is so the radiant heat from the fire will warm them. With a fire in the center like that, not much of the radiant heat will reach any of the families and it will only heat the air. With the structure being very well ventilated, this is a pointless goal. You changed something thinking it would be better, but in reality, you screwed up.
Here's the funny thing majicbeliever91. I don't know your native name. I think you spent too much time hiding from the film crew, so I never learned it. ;-)
where is the fire then.
The fire is in the center of the longhouse.
Guys, the music is too loud over your voices. Duh. The music is unnecessary.
WHAT?? NO FINISH VIDEO??? DID YOU ALL JUST GIVE UP???? VERY DISSAPOINTED.
I hear you there. Unfortunately, I was never able to secure enough bark to finish the project. :-( I looked into some simulated bark sheets that look very real, but wow, were they expensive.
The music is is annoying and a distraction.
They do not like that name it means snake
+Madison Kelley souix if I remember right means snake. Then again, I'm Aniwaya.
Contradicts the teepee image by Hollywood
Are natives required to pay big government like everyone else in permitting fees.... How did they do this...without modern technology????
First Nations were once allowed to take their children and parents taught these skill ... at the arrival of colonial settlers/(welcomed invaders )children were taken and educated in outside ways by questionably motivated or Ignorent racist educators causing family structures that are detrimental to successful and healthy development into adulthood.
The negotiations that bought(hustled) the country were done 100’s of years ago between a society that viewed those inhabitants as less the equal and a people who were new to the language and laws , these present day resulting treaty’s are so very minimal and most times unmet by this continents governments.
I couldn't watch this because of the stupid music overlay. Why ruin an otherwise interesting video by doing something annoying like that?
pyrolimnaeus I don't usually respond to troll comments, but this time I couldn't refuse.
The "stupid music" you say ruined this video is by Joann Shanendoah, an award winning full blooded Oneida who sings this song in her native language. You see, I made this longhouse because of a dream I had while sleeping on this island. In my dream, an ancient native came to me and told me to build a longhouse "for the people." I did and made this video adding Joann's awesome soundtrack.
You get my Troll of the Week award for your mean spirited comment. Next time, just hit the back button when you don't like a video.
Thank you for giving me an award. You do not, however, seem to understand the difference between a "troll", one who is just willfully annoying people, and myself, who was just telling you the music made the video unwatchable. You may like the music - that's fine. I wanted to see how a longhouse was built, but without having your musical taste inflicted on me as part of the deal. I have nothing to say about your dream on an island or how ethnically well-qualified the singer is. motoprof1441
pyrolimnaeus no, he got it right, TROLL.....a troll too stupid to mute his audio......go back to your video games....
