If nothing ells happened than four perfect strangers became the best of friends it was worth it. I watched an interview with them and they all became life long friends that still hang out and play together.
@MsTWOSPIRIT The Monkees label Colgems did not have a recording studio. They used RCA studio on Sunset in LA. The Stones used it for "Satisfaction" and the Liverpool Five used it for "Stepping Stone" and both of their RCA albums.. The Monkees were always dropping by to catch the bands and really liked the Liverpool Five' s music selections..
New Monkees did record their own music. This was just a fun gathering where they played a song that the Monkees sang. You should check out some of the other videos as well.
They are talented and they are very good together. In all honesty they were not the rip offs. It was greedy corporate heads that tried to capitalize on the on a new generation falling in love with the monkees. If they had named them anything other than Monkees and had it be more like "Saved by the bell" meets rock band I think it would have worked. Basically a sitcom about a garage band trying to make it big.
I would love to here them do a new album, I know the TV show only lasted a season because no one can catch the lightning in the bottle the original did. But I just wonder what it would sound like...
I think these guys are amazing. I was so pissed when they got canceled. It was a fun and creative show. Kids could use one like it today. I love that it never died with them. Keep rockin!
I loved the New Monkees. I loved the "old" Monkees. With David's passing it reminds me of the old times when there were old Monkees and New Monkees and the world was a happy place. I watched Dino Kovas meet Micky and what a wonderful thing that was.
Thank you for this. I have so many childhood connections to the New Monkees. I met one of my very good friends over the word callipygian. Thank you Dino.
I guess the songs the original Monkees sang (Peter, Davy, Micky and Mike) are not solely theirs, but to me the Monkees will always be only Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith. And all the songs they ever sang will be theirs alone.... For me, there are no New Monkees and there never will be... ever again.
1987 I think - memory is not so good. I watched from afar as Dino approached Micky at the autograph table when Micky was at the autorama in Detroit. Dino and friend spent the evening telling stories to 5 women after that. I always adored him.
I don't even remember the New Monkees. When Peter, Davy, Mickey, and Mike left the scene, I figured that was it. I left the scene, too. I don't even know that the NM's ever made or sold any records. I just thought I'd check them out to see if I was missing anything good. From this... I'd say not. If they sang or recorded anything different from the "originals", that would be more interesting than this.
At least the Mullets, Mohawks, Pompadoors & Flock Of Seagulls like hair styles from "back in the day" are gone now. That is great to see. Voices aren't bad either. So it's all good. Nice overall video. Thanks for sharing.
Hey, in all objectivity, these guys did play well. And like any performer, they were looking for their big break so I won't hold it against them. Unfortunately, the project was lame---they should have tried a different vehicle rather than what seemed a blatant attempt to usurp the originals. I'm a Monkees fan but I'm trying to be fair as well.
I feel the project would have gone well if they weren't using the Monkees name. I think that is where they alienated some. I understand. I liked that album myself. But that was more of the fault of the producers thinking the Monkees name was what was going to make it popular.
They are talented and they are very good together. In all honesty they were not the rip offs. It was greedy corporate heads that tried to capitalize on the on a new generation falling in love with the monkees. @MsTWOSPIRITTGotta correct ya....cos the first recording was by the Liverpool Five and it it is well worth checking out...recently turning up on You Tube.
rdhmommy Try sharing the album, Pool It ( Yes, I get the double entendre) - The Monkees, 1986. Same time MTV ran nonstop reruns of the Monkees tv show causing them to have the highest grossing tour of that year for the U.S. trivia question : who dreamed up the idea of a music cable channel that would play 24/7 music videos and sell the idea and make s ton of money? Times up! Mike Nesmith of The Monkees, of course.
No, you're not the only person who actually liked the New Monkees. I still love the New Monkees *and* the original Monkees. And I also love Tower City, too. (Larry's solo band. I have a copy of one of Tower city's CDs, that I got from a friend back in the day when The New Monkees were still popular, along with copies of all of the New Monkees TV show episodes burned onto DVD.) I had a huge crush on Larry "back in the day," because Larry was *exactly* one year older than I am. lol! He was born March 25, 1968, and my birthday is March 25, 1969. lol!
Maybe I'm being overly harsh, but IMO, all the "BITCH'es and "F*** YOU"s are no substitute for the sheer acid Mickey Dolenz conveyed in his rendition. He managed to put in the "eff you, bitch" quite clearly without needing to say it, his voice said it all. This is a good example why the "New Monkees" didn't make it, while the originals are STILL putting out great albums. (Even without Davey, R.I.P.).
LOL ... You were offended?? I think it was all in good fun. I think you're reading in to it a little bit. Speaking of 'sheer acid' ... I also like the Sex Pistols version! ruclips.net/video/ZXd8qnONDIk/видео.html
Well this was filmed at a private party, and somehow I suspect the original Monkees probably swore a little when they weren't on the air. In fact, I think I've seen a video here on RUclips of Micky Dolenz singing informally with the Cowsills, and I'm pretty sure he swore on that video, to make a joke that he couldn't remember their lyrics.
The Monkees, the characters on the show were drug, alcohol and cuss words free. As private individuals, they lived it all. Love Ins, drugs( FRODIS!) alcoholism and prison. One noted time, Micky was too stoned to act. Another time, Davy being sooooo stoned on episode- The Monkees Paw, giggling at his own private joke while Mike and Peter break character once they see how wasted Davy is. Controversial songs written by them, edited, in one case almost half of Micky’s song, Mommy and Daddy, was not “ suitable” and had to be rewritten in a “ kinder and gentler “ way. The word, Bitch, in 1996 song, Regional Girl, was criticized. (Album- JUSTUS)
@JeffersonDinedAlone And the musicians who played the instruments on The Monkees version copied Paul Revere And The Raiders version... only difference was the Raiders played on their version.
Marty Ross You are referring ti The Wrecking Crew, who laid down tracks for The Monkees, Mamas and Papas and just about everyone in L.A. It was a myth that they could not play instruments. They had to play an instrument at audition. Micky played guitar but was cast as a drummer (and lead singer) so he learned. Davy played drums but was hidden by them and they wanted him to be in front. In concert, he would drum when Micky would sing out front. Mike - guitar and later keyboards. Peter played and continues to play classical music daily and at Monkees concerts. When hired for the show, he played piano, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, banjo etc. The Monkees fought to play their own instruments and were allowed to play on their third number one album, Headquarters and subsequent albums. So no to Paul Revere and the Raiders influencing Monkees music. Both had their own sound and style.
Susan Gordon This is talent. The show was poorly conceived, poorly written with cheap sets and cheap behind the scenes. No one would have been able to follow the originals. These guys stepped up to try. Yay Monkees! awesome 50th anniversary international tour in 2016 promoting their album-Good Times! 50th Anniversary this year for their movie Head and all the nationwide showings. Fifty two years and we fans finally get the Christmas album we have been waiting for! Keep on rockin! ...RIP Manchester Cowboy...

Great stuff! I love The New Monkees.
Sweet!!!! Moments like this are priceless. NM 4 ever!! Thanks for sharing :)
This was great. I'm so glad that Marty does shows with Mickey Dolenz now.
I would love to here them do a new album, I know the TV show only lasted a season because no one can catch the lightning in the bottle the original did. But I just wonder what it would sound like...

I totally agree because I always thought it was a cute show with great music.
Thanks Dino...Would have been nice to have been there, but it's videos like this that put you there. ;0)
I loved the New Monkees. I loved the "old" Monkees. With David's passing it reminds me of the old times when there were old Monkees and New Monkees and the world was a happy place. I watched Dino Kovas meet Micky and what a wonderful thing that was.
Watched it tonight in Western Australia. Loved it ! ... and was thinking ... YES ! Us Baby Boomers ..... FOREVER YOUNG !!!!!!!
They're adorable!!
Thank you for this. I have so many childhood connections to the New Monkees. I met one of my very good friends over the word callipygian. Thank you Dino.
Excellent!
OK I love this and want more New Monkees

I'm havin fun just watching you guys so I know you guys must've had a blast!
Sure looks like you guys are having a great little party there......good friends and instruments are always a good time.....great vid.!

very good voice, BRAVO! good version!

They recorded one album and it’s quite good. No Monkees songs on it. Just good ol’ 80s rock.
Love it, love it, and oh yeah, LOVE IT!!
This is an awesome vid. Would have loved to have been there to see the live perfomance of it.
At least the Mullets, Mohawks, Pompadoors & Flock Of Seagulls like hair styles from "back in the day" are gone now. That is great to see. Voices aren't bad either. So it's all good. Nice overall video. Thanks for sharing.
A.V. Cat Noooooo! That was my generation and Davy Jones rocked the mullet! Agree on the pompodors. And Mowhawks are faux hawks.
You are no Mickey Dolenz but man you are pretty damn good ! Rock on !

@MB300TE The original Monkees did sound terrific. No comparison with these guys is neccesary to know that.
This must be said. You guys are still quite dreamy! :)
Very cool! I wish I had been there. Those guys should release another album... but maybe not call themselves New Monkees.
@MsTWOSPIRITTGotta correct ya....cos the first recording was by the Liverpool Five and it it is well worth checking out...recently turning up on You Tube.
OK, so when is the next dinner? It looks like this night was a blast!
This is much better. The 80's was harsh on these guys.
@palisurfer You have to record new music. Big fan of you guys. Share your music with my teen. I'm still trying get him to like the 80's :)

@faireststarr No, you're not the only one :) Check out some of the other videos!
Hey, I was there. Mercifully, I wasn't on camera.
Fuck yeah!
Ha ha ha, the New Monkees were worth it just for this reunion! "That girl's a bitch, FUCK YOU!" should've been in the original song.
I know that Larry (Tower City) just released an album. Any chance that all four of you guys might do another album together?
They were much better in 2007 then they were in their show
I'm starting to think I'm the only person who actually LIKED the New Monkees! :-(
No, you're not the only person who actually liked the New Monkees. I still love the New Monkees *and* the original Monkees. And I also love Tower City, too. (Larry's solo band. You are not alone. Ther were about four fans totally.
I like them too.
You are.
@starpurple When did you see Dino meet Micky?
then why are you here watching NM videos?
It's a shame that a "New Monkee" didn't know the words.
I think it'd be totally awesome if y'all made a comeback! Even if it's just for one live performance, I think y'all would kick ass again! :)
Kelly Gathman Don’t encourage them.
I think the band should reform, just to record some new music - Dino, you could produce the videos.
@faireststarr Yes, you are.

Never watched the show and now I remember why. At least w/ the real Monkees we didn't have to hear them curse like these guys did.
Well this was filmed at a private party, and somehow I suspect the original Monkees probably swore a little when they weren't on the air. Clearly you've never listened to the Headquarters Sessions recordings.
@beileverdaydreamer I can forgive them .... Johnny Rotten forgot the words to that song, too! :)
eric clapton sounds rough
@gvandoren This coming from an old guy that doesn't even post videos. Haha!

@ decay1996
Offended? No, not at all. Just making a comparison.
They have aged well. The show sucked but they are talented guys. Should have been given a new group name.
stop the insanity. please.
Sucked then, suck now. Sorry JMO.
Then move along, Susie.
By the way, 7th Avenue really isn't my thing ... but I really don't have the need to shit on them just because I don't like it. Grow up, Susie.
They're big boys, I think they can handle a little critism.

No. That's not how you sing it, the vocals are all wrong. Please stop. Posers.
Oh, Lighten up! LOL!!
Not posers. New Monkees holding up The Monkees in tribute!
