  • The Qodosen DX-286 AM FM Stereo LW Shortwave Portable Radio utilizes NXP's TEF6686 Automotive Chip Tech to bring Ultra Sensitivity to an Easy to Carry Receiver that you can Take Everywhere. During this video I test the DX-286's performance on the Evening Medium Wave Band. A Terk Passive Loop Antenna is not needed to push the Radio to its Upper Limits.

    Overall, the DX-286 is a Breath of Fresh Air when it comes to a Super Sensitive, Ultra Compact Receiver. It is perfect for the one who chases faint FM signals, loves to experiment with external antennas, and enjoys the AM/Shortwave Broadcast Bands. It makes a perfect first time radio for those entering the hobby. It has competition with other lightweight portables, but it offers enough to justify its current price.

    This radio is revolutionary, the first portable with an automotive radio processor. The technology of the 18650 batteries, gives enough power to a chip not made for portable devices. It’s still very capable, with its amplifier and antenna attenuation settings, combined with LW/MW whip antenna operation, gives a new possibilities on LW on those countries still available. I am up to see a new, more efficient TEF6686 based chips, to give radio receivers a new life in convenience in digital signal processing.

    Todderbert, what makes the Qodosen DX-286 so great is its highly sensitive TEF6686 DSP chip included within its circuitry indeed! Thanks for a very well as usual tutorial video in reference to this DX-286!

    AM on the whip when it's set to External with the amp is especially good when you're outside. Never experienced that before,but then the chip in this radio is one usually used for car radios. This setting isn't a very big deal when used inside

    Hello sir, I have done comparison on tecsun pl990 and dx 286 side by side by using MLA30+ for shortwave and I was surprised how dx 286 can pick even very sensitive stations which pl 990 didn’t.this radio is really amazing. Thanks for your video

      It has a select-able browse feature that lets the radio seek DX or Local, which is most excellent.

    This radio is quite good, but I recently compared the XHDATA D109 to the DX286 and well, I was impressed by the D109! It's on par with the DX286 on MW and SW. On LW, the DX286 is the clear winner (much more sensitive, receives as well as my Sony analogue radios!). On FM, the DX286 has many more features and is better, but it's not as obvious as the LW band.
    But the D109 is cheaper, has more filter bandwidths, has USB-C, a way better battery life, has BT and an MP3 player, and has better sound.
    For those seeking a cheap and very capable SW/MW radio, I recommend the D109. For the ones looking for a best overall radio, the DX286 is a very good choice.
    Sad the battery life is so short (and also, the kickstand is very flimsy !).

    Hi Todderbert, thanks for the video and the bandscan. What a coincidence! My postal service just announced that I can collect my Qodosen DX-286 now, so I'm about to go pick it up. It will be interesting to test and use the Qodosen DX-286, but from what I have heard from many, including you, Todderbert, the Qodosen DX-286 is an incredibly good receiver. Amazon US also delivered this radio quickly to me in Sweden, so Todderbert, I'm just a happy boy on Christmas Eve. Take care, Todderbert, and have a nice day.

    Thanks Todderbert after a 111F day in Tucson, Arizona , I could use the rain…😮! I have the $112 on sale SR-286 QoDosen version radio and didn’t even get the plastic case, oh well the hazards of being a radio pioneer…😂! Nice to see they changed some of the settings buttons selections to a more intuitive set-up which makes a great radio, better.
    Here’s hoping for a SSB full SW version to be produced!
    73! Have a great day!

      @Kw1161 Hey, yes, I agree with you. The Qodosen DX-286 has arrived, but yes, it would have been very nice if the Qodosen DX-286 had an SSD. So, what I want to see if there will be a new version of the Qodosen what I want to se in a new Qodosen DX-286 is.
      SSB
      USB-C jack
      Amber backlight display color
      And maybe Airband, but for Airband, I prefer to use a scanner for that, but it's nice also to have Airband in a radio. So we will have to see if there will be a new version of the Qodosen DX-286, but if a new version with SSB comes out, I would love that. Take care and have a nice day.

    Great video - thank you. As you already know I'm sure, if you go outside and put it over onto the telescopic antenna, that's where this radio will really knock your socks off on MW. Incredibly clean reception and highly sensitive. I have the SR-286 version.
    On 630 you had WLAP, Lexington, Ky. I live closer to them and am familiar with their sound and IDs.

      I have fun with it hooked up to a C.Crane Twin Coil Antenna. Monster Performance.

    • @ky7114
      @ky7114 21 день назад

      @@todderbert I'm sure it does fantastic with the Twin Coil Antenna because I have the C. Crane EP Pro with the built-in twin coil. I have compared that radio to this one outside and there are some frequencies where the C.Crane is better and some where the SR-286 wins. What is interesting about the telescopic antenna on this radio outdoors is it seems more noise-free than any other AM radio I have, especially during the day.

    Mr. T! THIS DX-286 is the most convoluted UN user friendly unit I've ever come across in 65 years of radio collecting. Would you PLEASE! do a deep dive on how to operate this thing? Every review minimizes the complexity making this unit almost impossible to use without having the ridiculously written operators manual. Your my last hope if you can't do this it will go back to Amazon.
    Thank you.

    Why are there NO other radio chops than the TE6686..? There must be other radio chips ( TE6686) similar or superior to this one?
    Also, why not include SSB with configuration ?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  19 дней назад

      SSB with this Chip is a No Go I think, something with Tech sharing. Not a correct term, but someone was talking about it, saying we will not see SSB with the TEF6686.

    • @hg-sx5nk
      @hg-sx5nk 17 дней назад

      A few things I read here and there:
      a) the TEF6686 was developed by Philips/NXP some 15-20 years ago for the auto-stereo segment. NXP requires customers to buy batches with several thousands of chips, so it was not a part generally available to small companies or the public.
      b) the fact this is a power hungry chip and portable AM/FM/SW receivers have a small customer base never made it a good option for Sangean, Eton, Tecsun, Degen.
      c) Siblings of TEF6686 can be found in home stereos, including the venerable Sony XDR-F1HD. The XDR is the best FM DX receiver out-of-the-box still today.
      d) In the last 5-10, TEF6686 became available for hobbyists, from either replacement tuner modules (enclosed shielded box) or recovered from old boards thanks to large electronics scraping/recycling industry in China. The availability of the 6686 triggered some Bulgarian and Romanian FM DXers to experiment with Arduino boards. A few years later, colleagues from the Netherlands developed a very good board with touch screen that's been copied, adapted and sold in large amounts from China (check AliExpress for TEF6686).
      e) The Qodosen 286 was born as a crowd funded initiative some 2-3 years ago by Chinese FM DXers led by very skilled RF hobbyists. After they got the needed money, they commissioned the same company and engineer working for Tecsun/XHData/Eton to develop the 286. There's a high chance the TEF6686 ICs used in Qodosen receivers are (as explained above) obtained from electronic recycling.

      Finally, a curiosity:
      The chip called Skyworks Si4735 is used almost all recent SSB portable receivers. However, when it got to the market, SSB was not available.
      It took CountyComm to secure a large contract with the US Government to finally have the money to pay SiLabs (at the time) to write the DSP code that enabled SSB reception. The CountyComm GP5 receiver was born.
      I personally think ATS909X2, Eton Elite, XHData D808 still have chuffing noises when tuning the bands and a uncomfortable AGC because neither of owing brands have the money, interested or both to hire again SiLabs or Skyworks to improve the DSP code. The chip is programmable, but it costs too much resources to do a good job.

      @@todderbertmaybe so. I never use a kickstand on the back of any radio I have ever owned. Most are very fragile. I prefer a lexicon stand or bookstand to put the radio on. That works better than any kickstand.
