My take on "irregardless" is that is an emphatic and can only be used to emphasize "regardless" once "regardless" has already been stated on same topic. "regardless" may mean "no", then "irregardless" means "hell no". But , again, it is improperly used if "regardless" hasn't already been introduced. I think of it as.... "irregardless" is second base and "regardless" is first base ( using a baseball metaphor) . You can't go to second base without first going to first. Scenario:"hey, you should split your winnings on that lottery ticket because I suggested which one you should buy". It would be premature to start with "irregardless" so you say "regardless". Then your friend insists and states " and I lent you the quarter to scratch the ticket". Now you can bust out the "irregardless" as a way of saying "no" but more emphatically like a "hell no shut up". Actually a "fuck off" would be just as effective in shutting down the topic and may be a better go-to response if for no other reason than to avoid having the debate about whether "irregardless" is a word or not. Again, just my take on the word and it's usage. I don't think I have EVER actually used the word for the reason I stated ( to avoid the debate) and found that "fuck off" is way more effective. I think if you use the word and get called out on it you will not likely win the debate unless there is someone there to back you up. So better to avoid the word like an iceberg.

Ha! Interesting take, but I think I’ll be going the ‘fuck off’ route for second base.

I understood that “irregardless” was meant to be used as a subject ender, regardless of all the information you’ve provided. Irregardless, I think we should focus on the excessive use of the word “too.”
