Best American song ever
I have been listening to Gram Parsons version my whole life (over 40 years) and just today discovered this version. I will always prefer Gram Parsons version, but man this one was fun. Put a smile on my face!
this is the original version performed by the writers...nothing else, especially Gram Parsons, comes close. This is the real thing.
@@gilream I always appreciate original recordings. But I have grown up only knowing Grams version & so that’s the version I love most.
welcome to the old school young fella! LOL.
This is pure magic!
Long time "Old favorite" of mine.
Good bluegrass blues song, very much inspired by Bill Monroe's similar bluesy performances.
Ira Louvin alongside Bill Monroe as the best tenor voices in country music !
How could anybody put a thumbs down on this ‼️
because thay dont like it
also it has 11 dislikes
They are rejects straight from Antarctica and have never previously heard ANY music outside of whales wailing mournefully!
One of the best American songs EVERRR!!! Thanks fellers
just great clean country music.....great song..
saw Charlie play a few years back in vermont. he was touring with the Old 97's. He played this song and they played Crash on the Barrelhead. great show
As Ira would say in the commercial! Take Home a Package of Tennessee Pride!!
Great song. We've all been there. If we haven't we haven't lived.
You feel Ira could have lived these lyrics
That's one great song. Kinda true, even now more than ever. Thank you Brothers.
DIVINE country...one love from this Jamaican Cowboy.....
LOL
only knew the Parsons&Harris Version, but this one is great too
This old grey dog gets paid to run!
Genius. Miss you Charlie R.I.P. Got to see him at The Mint in LA 2007
Like to see Hank III band try this one

Real country brothers!
Alison K brought me here, via Emmylou💚💚💚💚🎶
Another great version of this song was done by Dolly Parton on her "The Grass Is Blue" album.
What a vibe. Wow
Ira and Charlie wrote this beautiful song. Their real last names were Loudermilk. And yes John D. was their cousin. So, a little trivia I found in Shannon's notes. As my Shannon Marie has gone home to be with her Savior, I will continue to write from her notes. I loved her more than life. 25 years went by like 25 minutes. God Bless my AngelBear. Your Denny.
Related to Edgar Loudermilk, I understand....These guys were great! Their music still is!
Shannon Burns 🙏
I've long liked John D Loudermilk, but had NO idea he is related to the Louvin Bros.
The Slaughter Rule film brought me here
Love this. Thanks for posting.
I approve
Murder Most Foul 2020 by Bob Dylan brought me here!
Is there any video of the Louvin Brothers singing this song?
Gram Patsons and Emmylou Harris sing it too.
That's "Parsons"
Oddly there is not harmony vocal on this song as they were famous for their harmonies.
Does anyone know if Mr. Jimmy Capps was in the band when they recorded this one?
Thanks
~ Got in a little trouble at the county seat
Lawd, they put me in the jail house for loafing on the street
When the judge heard the verdict I was a guilty man
He said forty-five dollars or thirty days in the can
Said, that'll be cash on the barrelhead, son
You can take your choice you're twenty-one
No money down, no credit plan
No time to chase you cause I'm a busy man
Found a telephone number on a laundry slip
I had a good hearted jailer with a six gun hip
He let me call long distance, she said number please
And no sooner than I told her, she shouted out at me
That'll be cash on the barrelhead son
Not part not half but the entire sum
No money down, no credit plan
Cause a little bird told me, you're a travellin' man
Thirty days in the jailhouse, four days on the road
I was feeling mighty hungry my feet a heavy load
Saw a greyhound coming stuck up my thumb
Just as I was being seated, the driving caught my arm
Said that'll be cash on the barrelhead son
This old gray dog gets paid to run
When the engine starts, lawd, the wheels won't roll
Give me cash on the barrelhead I'll take you down the road.
Foot patton music.
Who's singing, Ira or Charlie? Howcome not both? Who wrote it?
The Loudermilk Brothers wrote this, under their performing and pen names, Louvin. They are both singing here if you have a good set of Koss headphones it is detectable.
Ira, high tenor
