If you have enough conversations about mountain biking, the term “North Shore” is bound to come up. Usually it’ll be in reference to a type of trail, or trail feature, but what exactly is meant when something is referred to as North Shore?
The most dramatic examples of North Shore trails can be found where they originated-the North Shore of Vancouver. When it’s not raining cats and dogs here, it’s raining pine needles. Flat areas inevitably become swamps, and steep spots erode as water and soft topsoil make their way down the mountainside. In order to build bike trails in Vancouver, builders needed to invent new techniques.
Today Brian and I will see that first hand, during a very rare dry weather. We’re riding mount Fromme, which is home to an iconic North Shore trail system only minutes from downtown.
That warm up on Bobsled would be our last taste of flow for the day. Little did we know, we were about to encounter some of the techiest tech we ever teched.
The bike I rode for the trip was a Mission Pro, which is a pretty big all mountain bike. Still it’s smaller and nimbler than the downhill bikes our companions were riding. With this slight advantage, I blazed the trail for most of the day and got to ride all these crazy features blind.
Up in Whistler we rode features like these on “A River Runs Through It”. All the ladders, bridges and log rides make the place look more like an Endorian Ewok village than a mountain bike trail.
Much of what you see here was built totally out of necessity to make the terrain traversable, but not all of it. After all, these are mountain bikers we’re talking about. Although we didn’t meet any of the builders there, it was easy to get a sense of their personalities by looking at the stuff they built.
Where wooden features aren’t necessary, you’ll find mind numbingly extensive rock work, akin to a double black Roubaix winding its way through the forest. I can’t imagine the amount of back breaking labor it took to move and position these all in place. It may seem like overkill for bike tires, but it’s probably the forest that will put the biggest hurting on these surfaces. Sometimes, the most sensible route involves circumventing the terrain entirely.
If you plan on riding the double blacks at Fromme, I’d suggest dismounting a few times on your first run. There’s no shame in scoping this stuff out before riding it, although I was pretty excited to clear more ground.
As we made our way down the mountain, the trails got worse, in a really good way.
If you’re watching this video saying “oh that doesn’t look so bad” I encourage you visit Fromme. Seeing this stuff in 3D is pretty humbling.
As someone who lives for super technical trails, I think Fromme may have been one of the funnest places I’ve ever ridden in my life. I had a flight to catch after our ride, so we grabbed some food and said our goodbyes. For any mountain biker with the resources to travel, this region is worth an annual visit. It lives up to the hype, even if you never touch a lift.
The totally unique trails, amazing wood and rock work, technical difficulty, and cool summertime weather are all reasons to venture to the promised land. How about you guys? How many of you have visited the PNW, and how may of you are lucky enough to live there? Have you ridden the North Shore? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

I live on the North Shore and if anyone says the trails are not that bad, I will tell you some of the trails are steep enough and rocky enough that it is difficult to hike these trails and to see people ride them is amazing. I just started mtn biking at age 53 and I look forward to getting good enough to be able to ride the mountains I call my back yard.

I'm fortunate enough to coach kids mountain biking in the Summer on Fromme (and btw, everyone in North Van pronounces it Fr-Ohm, with an O sound), and it's kind of funny how much us locals take for granted what we have here. Nowhere else in the world can you do trails like this in your backyard. Really sad to be moving away next year, but I'm hoping to come back every Summer. Definitely the best community I've ever been a part of is the mountain bike community here on the North Shore.
Really sad I didn't catch you guys up there, and looking at BKXC's strava, it looks like I was riding another mountain close by while you guys were there. Oh well, and I hope you guys come back here and do a fan meetup eventually!

So great to see the Seth side to this man. Simply the best. Ewoks, fitting music and you nailed it with "so magical" man. You killed it better than most locals dude. This was like watching a Fromme video again, for the first time. I ride NS frequently, but your right, you have barely scratched the surface of the PNW. Lets me know when you head up here again and we would gladly open the gates to the Fraser Valley man. Hit up 2-3 stellar locations (mountains) in 1 day. I am going to be firing up an MTB specific AB&B that will come with guided rides and fine Mexican food. The suite is finished in August and ready for this fall!

But I am currently waiting to order the last part for my very first dirt jump/pump track bike(being covid time some parts are hard to find like 15x100 front hubs). I live on Vancouver Island and am only a short 12 minute flight from vancouver. I feel blessed to have some of the greatest bike scenes around. trust me what you saw is only scratching the surface of gnar we have here in BC. if ever come back be sure to come check out Victoria, Parksville, and Mt. Washington (lift access trails designed by "bear claw" him self!) doesn't have anything on Whistler but definately is worth checking out as it is not as crowded and the trails stay in much better shape. and if you ever come to Victoria be sure to check out bear mountain. it's got flowy fast trails and techy tech gnar that I'm sure you would really enjoy! Bear mountain also has a jump park but is sadly looking like it may close eventually due to not enough exposure so if you come it would be great to have you check that out as I'm sure you'd enjoy it and it may give it some more exposure! Anyways great video man keep it up!

As far as I know, the first mountain bike specific trail ever built was Kirkford on Mt Fromme, built by Ross Kirkwood and Brian Ford in the early '80's. Todd Fiander was the first to build the wooden catwalks which became the trademark of North Shore style trails. I think a lot of the armoring came in later, after they realized the fall line sections were eroding badly. Very labor intensive trails!

Seth I have the day of school today, because I flew back to America yesterday. I was browsing your channel recentely while also looking at Brain's, Alexs and Phils. I have noticed the live streams and how unproductive they seem. Like 2 hours re-install a derailleuar and set up your cockpit and handlebars. (Not calling you out but that seems like a lot of time you be doing other things). Instead of doing this live stream of the repair I thought that prehaps you could make maintenance, repair and building tips as part of your video's. In a similar way Park Tool does. I reckpon this will expand your audience as it will broaden the topics on your channel. Please have a thonk about this or at least talk to Brain, Phil or Alex about it. Instead your livestreams could consist of prehaps Mountain Biking News or yout expeireinces at trails and places where you've ridden. TYhanks for reading this bible of a comment. Love the channel and can't wait to see where it goes in the future.
    Cheers from Aus,
    Wil

Wil Hall Hey Will, I'm always working on new videos, but each takes 3 full work days. AFTER work I'll sometimes do a livestream to keep the content coming. So if you're worried about the streams taking resources away from normal videos, don't! I only livestream when I can't stare into my computer anymore.

Seth, man i have to say, i have never been so impressed with anyones riding capabilities like you and this group of guys. That was the most intense looking day of MTB i have ever witnessed- and that goes for in person, youtube, etc. You guys are nuts!!!
Also, take Alex out there. I would love to hear his go pro commentary riding this. I can already hear him screaming "HOLY SHIT THAT WAS GNARLY YAAAAAAA"😂😂😂😂

Great recap of the trails there, and your willingness to ride those high skinnies is admirable. That's probably your best riding to date. You showed some SERIOUS bike control in this one, and I'm impressed!

I don't want to sound like that one guy but man I wish I could be like Seth. Here he is with amazing bikes and I thought I had a good one when it's a $900 hardtail... trek xcal 7 if it even matters. One day in a couple of years tho I'm going to start putting a little bit of money away from each pay check, until I have enough to get the bike of my dreams. That dream would've never sparked without you Seth. Thanks

Aw, man that brought back such great memories! I got to live up there for few years. Seventh Secret and Ladies Only are my favorites! Made a bunch of great friends up there. North Vancouver reminds me of a surf town, but everyone has bikes on their vehicles instead of surfboards. Thanks for the great videos!

Great video Seth. 57 year old noob to mountain biking - even though I live here. Bobsled is about all I can handle on Fromme. I tried Espresso and walked many of the tech features. The stuff you love to ride? Forget it! I don't have steel balls lol.
Tried Half Nelson up in Squamish today. Seems a lot longer than Bobsled but I do it in about nine minutes and Bobsled in four. (I know. I'm slow.) There are just so many berms and bridges and rollers on HN I guess that's why it seems longer than it is.
Still loving your channel. Keep those videos coming!

Seth, WOW! That North Shore is super cool and you are right you feel like all the sudden at any moment the builders are going to jump out and ambush you and take you hostage and the builders are going to be Ewoks! I don't want to blow your head up any more than it already is (haha!) but it is amazing how your time as a BMX'r prepared you for your current Mtb'g career. It is amazing at how you can go on some of this stuff for the very first time and traverse it as well as you do. I know that that North Shore trail would a been much more arduous and slow process for me the first time and I actually tend to be no slouch as a first timer rider, but I am not as good as you and that is apparent! But, I am also dealing with still being overweight which is a huge factor in balance and other issues dealing with traversing difficult terrain. But, the bottom line is that you really are a great rider and the more time that you dedicate to riding shows even more improvement. But I really did just want to say that I really did enjoy that vid. It looked like you guys really enjoyed it a lot!!!

I personally live about 4 hours North of Vancouver, at the very most northern part of the Okanagan Valley, which is roughly about a hour south of Revelstoke (where Nate Hills just finished his TransBCEnduro). There is something for everyone around here and the climates around here are so varied that you could be riding through rain forest one day and desert the next.

Awesome that you finally got to ride some steep techy gnarly goodness. I've been wanting you to ride trails like those since I first saw your videos. And having ridden those trails in real life (but never in the dry only in the pouring rain) I can say how gnarly they are. Next time you are up there check out Squamish ;) more techy goodness but is loamy and grippy rock

superb video . looks so much easier in the dry, LOL. no the trail design looks even tougher than it did 19 years ago when I was riding there a few years. However the structures look more refined now and rock surfacing more extensive by far. and to think nobody had disc brakes back then, and 100mm travel was considered a lot. I hardly remember any dry season riding, it was usually wetwetwet, but nicer temperature in winter for riding.

I live in Vancouver. Started riding road bikes before mountain biking was a thing. I got into mountain biking with my friends on some of the early non-suspension & later hard tail bikes. As I am a tall man, my center of gravity worked against me on the North Shore. My friends, loved "Ladies Only" and other trails on the North Shore, but I tended to walk these steep tech downhills due to too many painful "Endoes" (crash head over heels over bars).
    Nice bike channel.

Depends on what you consider counting as the pnw, but I'm lucky enough to live near Eugene, OR. Not the same part of the pnw you visited, but 20 minutes from oakridge riding, tons of nearby trail systems, right by the mckenzie river trail (called by some the best mtb trail in the U.S.), mt. Bachelor, and so much more. Definitely a mtb lovers dream right here.
