REJUVENATING The Looks of 650HP Turbo M50 E30 (First Time Auto Body)

- I spent way too much time sanding over the last month to make this video. I used a plastic welder for the first time to get a beautiful smooth finish on the plastic valence filling a bunch of gaping holes. I used the plastic welder to fabricate the ford taurus side skirts to perfectly fit my BMW e30 giving it a factory look. I wasted a ridiculous amount of paint while having to sand all of it away multiple times over the course of hours and hours. Put a huge dent in my brand new fender. I made countless mistakes. Learn from me!

To avoid dirt in your paint always make your floor wet, it need to be full of water so all the dirt falling from air will stick to it. Also make your first coat of clear not so heavy, make it a bit lighter and wait till the panel will be sticky to touch, but not leaving any fingerprints or just barely, then go full heavy, it will stick more and you will not get runs. Als dont use fast hardener, it will make more orange peel, just medium one, it will be better. Great DIY, you are learning a lot. I was like you a year ago, tried to do paint job on my e46, did extremly horrible job, so don't worry. Learning from mistakes is the best way.
wet floor trick, rookie mistake by joel
just wanted to say that lol
Don't be discouraged with bodywork. Learning is a lot of trial and error. Its rewarding as hell to be able to do it all yourself when you get the hang of it.
Black is a really difficult paint to spray because you can see all the imperfections and dust and scratches. For a first timer thats pretty darn good. Don't beat yourself up.
Camera quality crispy. I’m typing this just as you said you got a new lenses. Appreciate you investing back into our being pleasure
I feel your pain
Love the passion and effort you pour into all these videos keep it up Joel!
Crazy I was just like “damn Joel hasn’t posted In a bit I’ll just watch his old vids” and open RUclips up to a new vid didn’t even see the noti lol. Let’s gooo
Thanks for documenting all of this, painting/prep looks like a huge pain haha. A key takeaway for me on this vid was to get a plastic welder, that thing looks tight!
Mannnn I'm doing this shit next week except with zinnoberrot, it's gonna suck
When you don't know if you sanded all the high spots spray the surface with some bright paint and sand it off.
Joel I gotta say you got balls to learn on your main car, me and my friend still havent tried painting 2 stage, let alone metallic paint, only single stage Nardo multiple times on the drift car, respect.
Aint much to it. Spray your base coat then follow up with a drop coat. Let that flash then spray your clear. Main thing is finding your distance, speed, overlap and air pressure.
34:34 my love for you just grew bc u listen to peep
The plastic welder is pretty neat, good job!
It's me again, still haven't gotten anywhere near finishing the bodywork on my e36, but I did make some progress, last weekend we were in the snow with my best friend sanding away lmao
You did great despite all the problems along the way
i love how you say "this SHOULD be fun" gotta have the positive mindset
It takes people years to be skilled at this. Dont be discouraged.
i recommend reading the technical datasheet on the pain you are using. if you are questioning what sanding paper you need to use you can find that info on the technical datasheet on the base coat. the same with how long the paint supports wet-on-wet, so you don't need to sand down your base coat. I really recommend reading the info about the products you are going to use. if you are going to remove rust PLZ don't fail with using acid primer under polyester bondo, this stuff will fall off after a while. Don't listen to others what they say you need to sand and how many coats and waiting time and stuff. the datasheet is your best friend and will always have the right answer! if you have any questions I am willing to help 🤘
Oye 'mano You gotta evolve the technique when spraying. Getting the runs as if you were eating tacos off the roach coach everyday! Watch more vids from the pros where it highlights their technique. Once you get on top of that a lot off issues will disappear. GL
So mate i worked as a body filer sanding you every tink before paint thats how ive done it an the paint awyse came out perfeckkk
I've started with 180 220 depends on the condition of the panel
then 400 then 600 wet and then the scotch brith with some kind of mating paste (you have to spend the most time on the finale 2 sands it have to feeellll smooooooth) and then primer, sand ,primer ,sand , clean it very well with degreaser and 1,2 hand paint if you need do 3rd and clear thats it if it has orange peel, you deal with it on the polishing stage with sand paper wet but 2000 3000 on the clear there videos on the tube with this part
Dig more into plastic welding , u might find yourself making full custom body kits lmaoo
You gotta stop talking this reckless on camera🤣🤣bad enough you was already talking crazy I think in the header video where you had to pause and corner eye the camera🤣🤣I swear I was dying, no homo, I had to put that one scene on repeat for the rest of the night.
Take a break whenever the compressor turns on. Your pressure wont be consistent as it fills
sometimes the only way to learn is the hard way. As unpleasant an experience it probably was the experience was also invaluable, you are much more experienced should you try to do something like this again in the future. Beginner tax lol
I don't think you are supposed to wetsand filler prime to be able to identify low spots.
Hello Joel, i'm viewer, just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put in your videos! It's very helpful to have a beginner's point of view on many car related skills because it gives me a better idea on what to look out for when I'm gonna have to learn them myself on my project. Keep up the good work, I'm really looking forward to you finding a solution to that dust problem :)
May have sanded the body filler too soon. Dry to the touch but not dry internally
bro you always listening to bangers in the shop LOL
May not look like it but you have learned a lot and I've also learned a lot from watching this, was waiting for a Joel video to drop. I'll leave it to someone else to do my paint jobs😂
Before spraying any base coat use a sealer primer to seal all your body work and will stop that top coat from soaking in it’s a must. props to you for attacking it on your own
you really dont want to use any force when wet sanding
Hit the like button before 5 seconds into the vid. Been looking forward to this video
Fail forward brother! The only real way..
every new video I’m waiting for „Hello Joel, I’m guys..“ 😂
Me three!
Always trust the process with Joel cause he will get it done that plastic weld was clean
this is a good format for long form.
my girl coped me some merch😋😋
Let’s see more e46 content mayn
Keep goin bro. You motivate me to persevere.
34:32 lets goooo peep goes hard
What Camera do you use?
You should get some ND filters for your lens it’ll make the videos more cinematic !! And just overall better look ! :)
Bros a lil dramatic lmao
@imjoel next time you plastic weld your corners you can use small metal L-brackets or clips for strength and rigidity. Melt it into the corners to hold it together then plastic weld over it.
If you want to find e30 parts your best bet is to order them from South Africa cause the e30 is really popular there
Where did you get the new fender? My driver's side is smashed in and looking for a replacement
I been waiting for you to try painting I think you did well for your first time, practice makes perfect fr
Lesss gooo!!
Every time I’ve tried painting it’s turned out crap it’s seriously a nightmare but I hope I get better at it
yessir
hello!
Nice job , some thin mash would also make it more ridged on the inside
the shot @59:30 is not only practical and necessary, but it has a nice cinematic aspect too. Joel is a man of many talents
yessss!! been waitin!! luv u joel
Yoo
How long did it take to film all of this? Looked like a huge pain to do all that. You're a LEGEND Joel!
El mejor E30 de CT 🫶🏻
another mini movie
I didn't even notice lol! I was into it the whole time. He really soldiered through that sheesh
Joel, next time you want to hammer on some metal or something, Buy some sand bags. I cant remember what they are called but it is like a leather pouch filled with sand. You can hammer on parts and the other side wont get damaged
