I’ll admit, it was weird how all of the players were made teenagers rather than adults in this adaptation, but I loved the prologue they added with Pomni’s (Or Pamela in the dub) backstory! Really helped to expand on her character arc. Still crazy they got Gilbert Gottfreid to voice Caine in the dub though. Not a fan of how they removed the biblical reference in the dub by naming him Mr. Chatters, though. That’s one point the 1995 OVA’s dub has over the 1996 anime’s dub.

Yes, the OVA is more faithful to the manga by including the amnesia, but letting the players keep their memories helped to add so much more to their backstories and personalities rather than just leaving it ambiguous by the end. I know some say it ruins the whole narrative because “The original message was that Pomni could have been anyone.”, but Pamela is a sweetheart with a bad family life and I will defend her and that prologue with my life! (Plus Jax being made a farmboy named Jake was hilarious and Ragatha’s character model being based on Regina’s childhood comfort toy was adorable)

seeing this show as a kid changed my life. my uncle showed it to me on his computer and it launched me into my love of anime. awesome to see them remaking it now but i know the 3D animation will never hold a candle to this style
i think i rather see the show in a 90's Japanese art style then the 3D art style, don't get me wrong i love 3D but i think it would be a new change of pace.
while i enjoy the 1996 anime, i dislike how they toned down Zooble, one of the funniest characters in the original novel and especially in the manga, based on the novel! Zooble's and Jax's Banter was also cut down WAAAAYY too much. And they replaced Queenie with this Chess-Knight girl "Nighty-Knight". i have no idea why! She is just an inferior version of Queenie! i still enjoy that Kaufmo got a more prominent role, than he got in the Novel. the Manga only showed him for like 2 panels and then only mentioned him, in passing.
