Brenda Franco Awww, congratulations on your 50 years together. Sorry about the declining health. I agree, we love watching Kevin &Sarah. We miss seeing Samantha &Grace. Have a good day together. Your comment was great, and uplifting. 🙏
Chris Smith, who works at seed savers exchange wrote a book called The Whole Okra. One thing i remember is that if you know you’re going to be out of town you can pick the blossoms and eat them. But if you come back and still have okra that are too big, you can slice them and remove the seeds and use them like couscous. Also, you know how the lower leaves drop off as the plants grow taller? Well you can use the stems of those leaves as compostable straws as they are naturally bacteria inhibiting.
MORNING SARAH AND KEVIN. SARAH I DYHRODRATED OKRA LAST YEAR FOR A TEST. I WORKED GREAT. I PUT THEM IN A JAR. VACUUM SEAL THEM WITH MY FOOD SAVER. I PUT SOME OKRA IN A POT OF SOUP. TO ME IT TASTED FRESH. EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY IT. THANKS FOR TELLING EVERYONE ELSE.
You guys are right on with that okra. Okra grew very well in our desert garden and produced to the point we got tired of picking them almost every day, we cut the okra and froze it just as you but without the breading. The best however was dehydrating them as they take up less space when dried. there is no need to refrigerate and they last for years when vacuum packed. We are currently eating dried okra today from vacuum sealed jars put up in 2008.
A tip for the initial layer of flour: Put the flour in a paper sack (like a lunch sack) or in a large ziploc bag (especially for large/really wet items like chicken pieces), toss in the food, and shake it up. You'll get a really nice coating of flour without making a mess of your hands. Works for anything.
Here in South Louisiana okra is a must have for gumbo. We cut and cook down huge amounts of okra in large roasters along with onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Once cooked and cooled, it's bagged and frozen for gumbo season aka fall and winter. (Adding a small amount of vinegar cuts the slime and you don't taste it.)
@@caterchatter4671 I cook down the okra with seasonings, once cool freeze the okra in ziplocks. The gumbo is whole other issue. LOL you can Google a recipe but I'll tell you that other than a few bites of tomatoes cooked in the okra, no other tomatoes should be added to a gumbo. As for meat, I use okra in a shrimp or chicken gumbo.
I do that too! I make my gumbo base ahead of time to freeze or can, then I can add whatever I want or have on hand for a quick, warm, comforting meal over the winter. Sending you folks some love from north Texas while I catch up on my favorite homesteaders and watch the Gulf storms on TV. Stay safe and be blessed.
I must love you guys a ridiculous amount because I just watched this entire video and you couldn’t pay me enough to put Okra in my mouth 😂. Great video and God bless 💕
I put white vinegar in water, put the amount of okra I plan to fry in it , let it set a few minutes, slice it right out of the water, without draining it. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much less slimy it is. Salt & pepper it put it in a zip lock or paper bag with a mixture of half corn meal-half flour, shake it until all the okra is coated well, put it in hot oil and fry until browned & crispy. You have to take it out of the bag before you put it in the hot oil, tho. 😆 We like it with a few jalapeño slices, & yellow squash slices added to it , before frying. I hope this works well for any of you who try it. Many blessings from a “ well seasoned “ okra eater. Kevin and Sarah, you are such a great couple. You have so much to offer. We are “old timers “, but we learn so much from you. Samantha and Grace are so blessed having you for parents, as you are blessed with such sweet daughters. May GOD continue to bless you all four. 😊 🙏
I dehydrated okra for the first time this year, and we really love it! We also love it frozen, and pickled. The best variety of okra that we love is Baby Bubba from Burpee. it is a huge producer and it is also a dwarf plant. The only drawback is that for the first part of the season, you have to bend over to harvest the pods. Baby Bubba has out produced all other varieties that we have tried over the years. Love the videos and the great content. Keep up the great work.
Who’s got two thumbs and is knee deep into okra??? This girl. Fantastic tips. Never thought to freeze okra pre-breaded. Genius! Gonna try the dehydrator too. So excited!!!
I was just thinking , how am I going to preserve all this okra from the garden. You guys have answered my prayers !!! Cant wait to dehydrate them, and put some up for frying !!!!
When I test okra, I bend them at the tips and not in the middle. I learnt this from an 88 years old lady when I was showing off my 14" okra. I was surprised. I never had to guess again. It even works with the stubby ones.
Here in the Caribbean(I live in Barbados) we like that the okras are slimy because we make a dish called cou cou. It consists of okra cornmeal and a little water with salt to taste.

I’m with Sarah, I don’t like the sliminess of okra but love it in soups. I’m checking out dehydrators and okra will be one of the many things I’m going to try to dehydrate. I’ll do a batch of fresh fruits for my grandson to take to school as morning/afternoon snack. Dehydrating fruits seems to bring out the natural sugars so he’ll think they are candy. Also going to bread onion rings and freeze them for myself. Maybe add a little spice to them. Thanks for the video, guys. Love your channel.
Pickled okra is the best. I love both methods that you two have done. I will definitely be watching my veggie stands next summer so I can try this. Thank you. 😊

I slice the okra, toss it in cornmeal and flour mixture and freeze on a cookie sheet over night then toss it in bags and put back in the freezer. I do the same with zucchini. I dehydrate it to use in soups.

OK, you've convinced me. Am going to try growing Okra again next year, and will try both your preservation methods. Thanks so much. Am going to share this on my FB page!
Dehydrated okra is great! I rehydrate in boiling water, drain, and bread in a mixture of 50/50 flour and cornmeal, add baking powder, season with salt and pepper, and fry. So good.
Excellent information. I don't like the slim either. But all the comments with suggestions on how to use dehydrated okra are amazing. Thanks to everyone! Healthy alternative.
David Dobson Yes, I like to use about half flour & half corn meal to roll it in before frying it. It makes it a bit crunchy. Fried okra is our favorite veggie I slice a few jalapeños in with it before frying it. That’s yummy 😋.
My 12 year old son loves pickled okra! He has eaten that stuff since he was about 4 years old. I put it on the table for every meal even for sandwiches!
I dehydrate okra, then make a powder. It makes a very good thickener, like cornstarch.

Your garden looks so healthy, and beautiful.
Good Morning from Cajun Country!! just ordered one of your Dehydrators Sara!! Can't wait for it :) YAYAYAYA!! For all the months i have watched ya'lls videos, i never noticed that Kevin is left handed like me, :)) Have a wonderful and blessed day!!! Hugs and Loves going ya'll way!!
I am so glad I came across this video. I was wondering how I would freeze my okra this year, and now I know. Im growing Okra for the first time. I love breaded and fried Okra and I cant wait to preserve some for over the winter months. Thanks you guys. Your videos are just the best.
I slice the okra, toss it in cornmeal and flour mixture and freeze on a cookie sheet over night then toss it in bags and put back in the freezer. I do the same with zucchini. I dehydrate it to use in soups.
Thanks for the dehydrating and freezing ideas. I love okra so much I've always been able to ignore the slime but now I can have the okra without the slime. God bless you and your girls.
I have the same dehydrator. Love it and have had mine for 3-4 years. I'm with ya on the okra and walk right by it. I will have to give this a try next year.
Tracey R. What brand model is your dehydrator and where did you get it?
I also bought extra trays and Bass Pro Shop. It can be stacked as high as 12 trays, however I have never gone that high.
Hey Sarah and Kevin, great video on Okra. You either love it or hate it and I love it. Got to try some that’s been dehydrated, sounds and looks good. Thanks for sharing with us.
I love okra . Never had it dehydrated. That would work for soups I love it in soup too.. I learn so much from you two. Thanks and God Bless
Thanks so much for sharing. I have a problem with slimy okra. I'll definitely try to grow some now. Bless you.
Try adding a little corn mill I think you will like it.
Yes it makes it crunchy and if you cook it enough it's never slimy.
David Dobson Yes, I like to use about half flour & half corn meal to roll it in before frying it. It makes it a bit crunchy. Fried okra is our favorite veggie I slice a few jalapeños in with it before frying it. That’s yummy 😋.
@@hummingbird275 I will have to try that sounds good.
David Dobson 👍👍

My 12 year old son loves pickled okra! He has eaten that stuff since he was about 4 years old. I put it on the table for every meal even for sandwiches!
I am not an okra person, but good to know how best to preserve. I dehydrate a lot of things
Good morning! Love fried okra. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day at the farmers market. God bless
