    Hi all, I hope you enjoy today's video! I started this project last September, and after many months of on and off work it's finally done! These will be installed on double doors in the nearish future, but before that I need to make the missing strike for the lock. I'll do this in a future video, though I haven't decided whether I'll etch the design in a piece of bronze or cast the strike like the original - Let me know which option you'd prefer to see!

    • @craig7343

    Such a fantastic video they look stunning! I’ve learnt so much about metalwork and metal finishing from your videos. Will be fascinating to see how you do the striker plate. The chemical cooper plating… what is that - is it just copper sulphate solution?

      Sorry for the late reply, I've been super busy lately! I plan to either etch the strike using photoresist to apply the design to the metal, painting any areas that I don't want etched, then etching the applied design with ferric chloride. At some point I'd like to get into casting, but I'll be too busy for the next few years to start that up unfortunately. Thanks as always for watching!

    Hey man. I hope you're ok. I miss your content. I frequently go back and watch old videos just to get me fix...lol.
    I just sent a friend your channel because she has an Eastlake style pantry door latch she wanted to restore and wasn't aware that there were different color schemes and better ways to clean them than Barkeeper's Friend, vinegar, etc.
    Do you have plans on posting more content or did you get all of the hardware restored and installed in your house? If the latter, please give us a tour!!

      Thanks a lot, man! I've been so busy that I haven't had time to edit for ages despite having four projects recorded. The good news is there should be a new video out this coming Friday, so stay tuned!
      It's a long story but I'm currently fully restoring 22 locksets which has sapped up all my time over the past year or so. Should be done in four months or so haha.
      Awesome to hear, I've been tempting to do a walkthrough with commentary on my entire restoration process which would include where to get well priced reliable spring steel of different widths, keys for locks and going over the different finishes these sets all had from the factory with examples.
      Thank you for the support!

      It's surprising but I think I've only been asked one other time - I use either lacquer thinner or paint thinner depending on which can I grab first hahaha. Both make quick work of the excess paint as long as it hasn't been curing for too long or wasn't applied too thick. Have a nice rest of your weekend, Mark!

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  Год назад +2

      Sorry again for the late reply, but good question! As a general rule I’m not too worried about it since most of these parts are not work hardened enough to be at risk of breaking. When bending bronze like this it’s usually pretty easy to bend by hand. If it feels very stiff I’d chose anneal it before trying to do any straightening, but haven’t needed to do that for any projects I’ve worked on for the channel

    How do they get rust if they're brass?

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +1

      Good question, I suspect you're referring to the darker/black bronze backplates that were very crusty in areas, but overall they were rust free. I don't recall seeing rust on any of the backplates or the mortise lock faceplate with this project, but with that said it is possible to have a layer of rust on top of bronze items if they were resting against something that was rusty for a long time - Although the bronze itself may not technically be rusty, the layer of rust deposited on the surface can be difficult to remove without a rust remover. This is why my previous videos I throw bronze door knobs in the rust remover overnight since the steel spindle usually has deposited a solid layer of rust inside the doorknob and doorknob shank, and if left as is would cause the restored steel spindle to start rusting shortly after being reinstalled. Thanks a lot for watching!

      Looks like you've found my pre-released video hahaha - Welcome! Etching was my first thought and I already bought a jumbo piece of decently thick bronze if I choose that option. I figure casting is a decent amount more effort since I have to make a mold of the design, though the benefit is that I can add a texture to the recessed areas like this hardware had originally. Thank you for the feedback, and thanks a lot for watching!

    You did a very nice job restoring them, but don't be so afraid of leaving nicks, dings, and imperfections in your future projects. They add character to a piece and convey a tangible sense of real history. Now, these pieces look like new reproductions. When you began removing the imperfections, I sighed and got a bit disappointed.
