1 The day you gave us, Lord, is ended, the darkness falls at your request; to you our morning hymns ascended, your praise shall sanctify our rest. 2 We thank you that your Church, unsleeping while earth rolls onward into light, through all the world her watch is keeping and never rests by day or night. 3 As over continent and island each dawn leads to another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor do the praises die away. 4 So be it, Lord! Your throne shall never, like earth’s proud empires, pass away; your kingdom stands and grows forever until there dawns your glorious day.
I understand that Ellerton (excuse my spelling?) wrote this hymn as a missionary offering. I wish ministers would put it back where it belongs so that we sing it more often, but, yes, it is very appropriate for evening worship, and I would always use to end Evensong (No 33 in Ancient and Modern).
Stunning rendition. Glory and Honour to the only God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, father of our Lord Jesus Christ. May Western countries get back to Him, the only Saviour and Truth. Let's pray for that. Amen.
This hymn was my late Papas favourite he sang all the time when I was a child and my dad sang it at his burial service. I then sang it at my dads burial service. Rest in peace . Hope too see both Inthe future.
What a beautiful hymn. It makes me remember my church in San Francisco, Ca, where we sang this hymn so many times. And I choose that one for my devotionals, at the sunsets. May God bless your church as well. Loved to see the devotion of the people.
This fine hymn was sung on the day of Her Majesty's funeral. My wife and I as we watched the proceedings live on the tele (both with a lump in our throats) simultaneously looked at each other and declared that we would both have this sung at each of our funerals.

Great hymn to sing after an evening Christian service of any king. It packs a double punch for sure!

There's just something lofty and lovely about this hymn
Brings back childhood/teenage memories from evening service in church. Long time ago I'm old now [64].
I love the way the choir gently sing this fine hymn, not overwhelmed by the organ.
I haven't heard this hymn for many decades. It's beautifully sung and the organ is the icing on the cake!
Very nice to see a Choral Evensong in a country which does not have an Anglican tradition.
That is a very good recital of this beautiful hymn.
This is just the best , uplifting music on the planet
My soul is indeed gratified by this.

One of my favourite hymns. Played and sung to sheer perfection. Thank you all for your recording and version of the hymn.
