hey Lisa, I just watched this two years later, looking for an advanced compact. I already decided on the LX100 (between it, Canon G5x, and Sony RX100 m3 & m4), but this thorough review really assured me that's the right choice for me. now it's even cheaper so you get real great bang for yout buck. thanks!
Thank you for a great review! I just bought a pre owned LX 100 as a complement for my full frame canon and can't wait to bring it with me everywhere I go.
I've only just found this video (2018) I know that this video is now 3 years old but the LX100 is stunning, I've been searching for a retro styled camera for a long time, I miss the 35mm film days and this camera gives me the same control that I had with my film camera's. I've only just bought the camera (£500 in the UK) I just love the camera and the results I'm getting are excellent. I have a friend who bought the Leica Dlux 109 a couple of years ago and he constantly rubbed my nose in it because he had a Leica. He's not so happy now because my lovely LX100 is apart from a few body changes exactly the same as his Leica but cost over £350 less. Thank you for this video, it is excellent.
Very good review. In the future, I'd love to see autofocus with a specific area in mind. With the wide area focusing mode the camera just picks something, but I'd like to see it pick what you are aiming for and how fast that happens.
Great review as always - I have the RX100 and Canon G7X and the A6000 and the LX100 and others as I am camera horder :) - they all have their place - I do love my LX100, the size and fast lens and focal range just make it a great street shooter and that in low light as well - yes I wish it had Touch LCD with Touch Shutter and tilt LCD - maybe the next version - I truly enjoy using the LX100 - the G7X is nice as it is a bit smaller and a bit longer focal range and it has Touch Shutter - but it does not have 4k Video and lacks in features - but I opted for it when wanting to upgrade my RX100 due to slow lens as the RX100m3 had shorter focal range and no Touch Shutter - and sadly the new RX100m4 still has the 24-70 - Like you said the LX100 is not for beginners but a joy to use for more advanced users - most impressive are the night time results - I also have the Fuji X100s and yes the IQ is a bit better in some situations but I take out the LX100 about 90% over the X100s as it offers me zoom and 4k video with ability to capture at 30FPS stills - it is smaller and lighter and more features - so I hope Panasonic will add Touch LCD/ Touch Shutter and tilt LCD on next version and Mic in - but great reviews - thanks
Lisa, thanks for a good review! Nice nails, too. I have a Canon S95 & want to upgrade. I used to be a pro photographer, but now just a thorough one. I have the feeling the LX10 would be a better upgrade for the S95. This camera seems to want to be an all-in-one. I think I'll have two cameras, a "serious" one and "always handy" one. I don't want a "smart" phone, either. So, maybe the LX10 or new Canon G1 Mk iii and a Panasonic GX8? We'll see. For me, shopping and comparing is fun. I'm on "Retired Standard Time," too!
I watch many reviews on cameras and you are one of my favorites. I'm downsizing right now, finally faced reality about schlepping around DSLR bags with $15,000.00 worth of equipment. D3, it's been fun with your holy trinity but in this day and age I can't wear a poster for all the thugs that says Mug-Me. All I ever wanted in 45 yrs of photos was Leica Pop and BW and says display me. Of course without paying the 2-5G service fee for the red dot. I do love full frame however. might go with the new Fuji and some Zeiss lenses and dang these guys for taking away flip screen which I was totally excited to incorporate into street photos.
+Thomas Smith You will love a Fuji X-T10. Smaller version of the Fuji X-T1 and ability to change lenses. I owned the Sony NEX 5, NEX 6, and A6000, also the Lumix LX100. I loved the grip and speed of the Sony. Hated the kit zoom. And honestly the Sony was for my every day carry in my purse. Adding a different lens that zooms makes it huge like stated in the review. Frustrating. IF Sony would fix that kit lens, then I'd jump back on board because it is a joy to use in many ways, and has that lovely APS-C sensor. The Lumix LX100 is lovely too. Fixed zoom lens, fast though. The Fuji X-T10 hasn't the best grip, so I added the expensive optional grip and it is heavier, but nicer to carry. If needed, it can be taken off for more portability. The Fuji JPEGS are lovely, but I honestly shoot RAW and can get just as nice files doing what I do with them, and retain all that information. I am older too and sold off most of my Nikon gear due to back and neck problems. I am always on the search for the perfect pocketable camera. LX100, Sony A6300, A6000 and Fuji X-T10, X70, Ricoh GR are all smaller, but the X70 and Ricoh GR are more portable though with fixed lenses.
I'll never understand the fascination some people have with megapixels. It wasn't THAT long ago that sports magazines were printing full page spreads from the 4MP Canon 1D or Nikon D2h. My wall is covered with 16x20 and 20x30 shots of my daughter from my own D2h. and I have a beautiful cropped 24x36 canvas of our 9 person group at a Spartan Race hanging in my business that was made from a D2h file. I've bought and sold a bunch of cameras since the D2h came out, but that one isn't going anywhere. Its still my favorite. I can see why people that make a living from commercial photography like all the pixels they can get, but for the vast majority of people that will be viewing on Facebook or printing simple stuff for home, there or so many more features that are more important than MP count. Oh well, to each his/her own.... I would love to see some of the 8MP frames pulled from the 4k video on this camera. Thats the feature that probably intrigues me the most. Man - if those could only be RAW......
Thanks for the great review ... just curious whether you have tried any other Lumix models before you decided to go with the LX100 such as the DMC-ZS60?
I had a real hard time deciding between a LX100 or a RX100mk3. I already own a DSLR and I wanted something that I could bring on holiday with me and not have to worry too much about size, weight or attracting the wrong kind of attention. The photographer in me was screaming out for the tactical nature of the LX100 but after much thought I came to the conclusion that the thing that matters to me in this instance is pocketablity; the LX100 loses here. The RX100mk3 can fit inside pretty much any type of clothing and it makes for the perfect travel camera. After nearly a week of ownership the RX100mk3 is all in all, fantastic. There are some disadvantages to its small size, the menus are frustrating and it can be a chore to click through to a drive mode or setting, but it's a livable compromise for that small form factor. I still find myself drawn to the LX100 though, I hope Panasonic are listening that the next model of the LX100 needs an articulated display and also more megapixels! Megapixels are not the be all and end all but when you start cropping, 13MP vs 20MP it becomes very noticeable.
Steve, I'm exactly in the same boat and I purchased LX100 to complement my D750 but after using it for couple of weeks I've ordered RX100 III and will be putting the LX100 for sale soon. The prime reason being, as good as LX100 is, it is not really pocketable and that defeats the whole purpose of second camera. Since I cannot carry LX100 in pocket, I have to keep in in a bag and when I'm carrying a bag, I would rather take D750 with couple of small primes. With that said, LX100 handling is exceptionally good and that's one area with RX100 totally suck but then again, compromises have to be made in order to keep the camera pocketable.
great video .. I am currently shooting the Nikon 7000 and Nikon 5200 .. I do a lot of videos also and need to have a camera I can carry on short runs in my pocket when the larger cameras are not available. The price point should be under $500 if possible. I do not mind buying refurbished or used in excellent condition.
I am sure I don't have to say it to you at all, but please do a review of the 2nd Gen Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga once you can get your hands on it. Heck, if you are able to do the 12",14", and 15" that would be amazing, but seeing how far fetched that is, I would be happy to hear your opinion on any of them and general thoughts on all of them.
I have heard that the Lieca version is the same hardware, but DIFFERENT software for processing the pix. Is this true, or just an urban legend??? if true, are Leica JPGs better?
Can you do a recommendation/video of the best capable camera under $200. I haven't been able to find any satisfying videos or comparisons on the internet!
Hi, I have a Canon T3 DSLR Camera and I was wondering if this would be a good DSLR for videos, because i was looking for something to help me produce high quality videos. I was hoping to upgrade later in the year but i can decide what is good for Video Production, Also good job on the review!
I just bought one of these for 250 dollars. I was shooting 4000 photos in Lofoten last year for later doing paintings with a fujifilm pinefix HS10 and sadly some of the pictures was so great that I regret using that camera and since then I have been wondering what to replace it with. I almost bought a FZ2500 but someone told me the image quality is not that good and I still want another bridgecamera or something to shoot mountains with. I dont know. I was hoping a Sony RX10 would do the job but Im told the Nikon Z50 is better and the menu on the RX10 probably is beyond what i can understand. So maybe this little thing can give me some nice prints. I dont know.
Why did I take so many photos? I was overwhelmed by the beauty of nature. I was expecting my obsession to drop in intensity after some time but it did not. Makes me wonder what I will be doing in the future.
Nice review! I have a LX-7 and an FZ-1000. I like the digital zoom on the FZ-1000, as it enables usable photo images in the extended digital zoom range due to its larger 1 inch sensor. However, I have searched the internet to no avail looking for opinions and/or images of digital zoom photos taken with the LX-100. I would think that the LX-100 would be capable of taking fairly decent digital zoom images considering the fact that it uses a sensor that is roughly 1.5x larger than the FZ-1000. The LX-100 digital zoom range from what I understand is slightly over 300mm. Any comments or suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated. I'm definitely no "pixel peeper". Just appreciate decent photo images for most applications. Thanks again!!!!
Lisa how is AF in low light? I was shooting with my Fuji XT1 in low light bar yesterday and even with latest 4.0 Firmware XT1 chocked and refused to focus (with 35/1.4 lens) at the end of the night, it was dark yes, and backlit. How is this in low light? Not sure what EV rating is, I know Panasonic GX7 is rated at EV-4, not sure how LX100 does in low light. That is an absolute must feature for me
We record in 60p and upload a 60fps file. What RUclips does with it, well who can say. But there's not a lot of fast moving stuff in our videos where higher frames would be a bonus.
Hi Lisa, I just need some clarification, are you saying there isn't much difference from image quality (1inch sensor 20mp vs 4.3 sensor 12mp)? Its quite affordable to find a MKi and MKii these days... though I also love the manual buttons coming from Fuji systems.
+curseknight5 There certainly is a difference. The Sony RX100 series does a great job, but in the end more pixels on a smaller sensor is not as good as the bigger sensor when you get that much more information. Micro 4/3rds is much bigger than a 1" sensor. Yes the little Sony RX100 III or IV is nice, but the LX100 has the better sensor.
Hi ! Are you going to do a review of the new Macbook Pro 13" with the Force touch trackpad? I really hope so, because it is just like the neu Macbook, but as a student at grammar school i really need USB ports etc. I am also wondering if the new Macbook will be able to run Windows fluidly? Anyway, really hope to get an Answer. (pls don't mind spelling mistakes my first language is German, not Englisch :D)
Please do not regurgitate misstatements like the A6000 is the fastest focusing mirrorless camera. Please inform yourself before making such silly comments. The GH-4 and G7 focus noticeably faster. I presently own panasonics and used to own the A6000, so I write from actual experience.
+Bookworm I owned both. The Sony A6000 is APS-c Sensor, super fast and loaded with features. The APS-C sensor produces bigger files that you can make bigger prints. The problem with the Sony is the kit lens. It's utter garbage. I've owned the NEX 5, NEX 6 and A6000. Unless you invest in the better, sharper lenses, you will be stuck with that crummy zoom. The point I want to make is that the camera is great, the zoom isn't. I am angry about this, because if Sony fixed that kit lens to be sharp and fast, then that would be perfect as a carry everywhere camera. The fact that as soon as you put on better lenses, it makes the camera bigger, it defeats the purpose of having a pancake zoom for portability. The Lumix LX100 is a fixed lens, fast and sharp. The lens is much better than the Sony kit lens. The sensor isn't. Yes, it's better than your Sony RX100 IV and such but it's not as nice as APS-C in dynamic range. Yes, it's noticeable to me. It may not be noticeable to most people and you can certainly blow the shots up to at least 16X20 with no problem. It shoots 4K, the Sony A6000 doesn't (but the new A6300 does, but at a huge cost difference). The features on this little camera are superb. I have heard some people were having dust on sensor issues. I wonder if it was due to that optional lens cap. The LX100 is a blast to use, as is the Sony. I also own the Ricoh GR which is APS-C fixed lens with an 18mm (1.5 crop factor makes it a 27mm) fixed sharp lens on it. It's very pocketable. My favorite pocketable camera by far, but it only has a F/2.8 lens as opposed to the Lumix which has the variable 1.7-2.8 range. If you are used to Micro 4/3rds and like it, get this camera. If you are into full frame and APS-C and can't give up that dynamic range and ability to crop, then go for the Lumix LX 100.
There are sample photos and a 4k video sample near the end of this video. We'll have samples in our written review as well, and that will be up in a few days.
what good quality and small cameras that has a 'flip' screen can i use? I like the lx100 but if it had a flip screen for the front ( the Lens side ) I would be my camera that I would want.
Lisa - Thank YOU, so much for a great exploratory review, on the Panasonic Lumix DMC- Camera! Honestly, it’s just good to hear your expertise and delivery, of the information! Many thanks! GFR-SSMFGR
How does it perform in low light? I'm thinking about to buy this camera for hiking, but I'd rather buy a camera with an APS-C sensor with a fast lens. I don't need a bulky camera, with big lens... like the A6000. Is there any fixed lens camera on the market with APS-C sensor and fast lens?
+Eric Hogan But you have to manually focus and many people don't want to do that. Yes, there is peak, which is lovely on that camera, but native lenses that use the AF is so much nicer. I've used the 35mm Summicron and 50 Summicron on my Sony NEX 5 and NEX 6, but the Sony or Ziess lenses are so much quicker for older eyes, even with Peak.
+Cielo Cruz If you want to be able to change to different lenses the a6000 is a better bet, its a great camera. I bought the lx100 for the leica glass and I shoot street photography so I don't need or want to carry extra glass.
this thing is a pretender. it's nothing that it's advertised or reputed to be. it doesn't have a better sensor than its 1" BSI rivals, it isn't compact and it isn't high res (13MP sure doesn't qualify). all it has on the RX100 series is its deceptively similar name.
Stop gabbling woman! You clearly know your way around the equipment but your delivery is awful. Your sentences just meld into each other and the rise and fall in the tone of your voice bears no relation to the sentence structure. Try pausing once in a while. I was interested in what you had to say but simply couldn't listen to you for more than a couple of minutes. With respect.
If that's your "respect"mode, I'd hate to see you really TRY to insult someone. I noticed the rushed diction, too, but would've stated it more constructively. It wasn't an issue for me, as I assume Lisa is not a broadcast professional. She got a lot of good info out. Even so, have you listened to TV talking heads these days? They say things like "between you and I" and "nu-cu-lar."
I really like your reviews and I'm a long time fan, but I finally had to unsub because the overly shallow dof of your new videos really hurts my eyes (I always watch your videos on a big screen, maybe it's not a problem on a smartphone or a tablet). I wish you used a different camera better suited for this kind of videos. Anyway, thank you for your reviews and good luck!
Oh crap! This has been the most thorough and professional [any camera] review I've watched during my hunt for a new camera. Thank you.
hey Lisa, I just watched this two years later, looking for an advanced compact. I already decided on the LX100 (between it, Canon G5x, and Sony RX100 m3 & m4), but this thorough review really assured me that's the right choice for me. now it's even cheaper so you get real great bang for yout buck. thanks!
Thank you for a great review! I just bought a pre owned LX 100 as a complement for my full frame canon and can't wait to bring it with me everywhere I go.
hello how.is.the stabilisation and qualité in vedio is good or not
I love this! It's like a miniature version of the good ole Panasonic L1 from years ago.
I've only just found this video (2018) I know that this video is now 3 years old but the LX100 is stunning, I've been searching for a retro styled camera for a long time, I miss the 35mm film days and this camera gives me the same control that I had with my film camera's. Great review, Lisa. Up to your usual high standard.
I would like to see more camera reviews from you.
Olympus OM-D E-M5 II is the obvious candidate.
We will be doing more camera reviews :)
How about reviewing the Leica dlx8?
As always Lisa, great review!
I got the D-Lux version. I like it so much I am planning to get the LX100, too. Forget price conscious if the product is this wonderful :)
+Andrew Piatek You mean you bought the Leica? Does it have 4K video? TY
+Thomas Smith yes, it does
Very good review. In the future, I'd love to see autofocus with a specific area in mind. With the wide area focusing mode the camera just picks something, but I'd like to see it pick what you are aiming for and how fast that happens.
Best review by far!
It also matters how much total light is let in, and the M4/3 sensor using that lens is actually an f/3.5-5.6 equivalent to full frame
Great review as always - I have the RX100 and Canon G7X and the A6000 and the LX100 and others as I am camera horder :) - they all have their place - I do love my LX100, the size and fast lens and focal range just make it a great street shooter and that in low light as well - yes I wish it had Touch LCD with Touch Shutter and tilt LCD - maybe the next version - I truly enjoy using the LX100 - the G7X is nice as it is a bit smaller and a bit longer focal range and it has Touch Shutter - but it does not have 4k Video and lacks in features - but I opted for it when wanting to upgrade my RX100 due to slow lens as the RX100m3 had shorter focal range and no Touch Shutter - and sadly the new RX100m4 still has the 24-70 -
Like you said the LX100 is not for beginners but a joy to use for more advanced users - most impressive are the night time results - I also have the Fuji X100s and yes the IQ is a bit better in some situations but I take out the LX100 about 90% over the X100s as it offers me zoom and 4k video with ability to capture at 30FPS stills - it is smaller and lighter and more features - so I hope Panasonic will add Touch LCD/ Touch Shutter and tilt LCD on next version and Mic in - but great reviews - thanks

Great shots at the end of the video! Really sad that this camera doesn't have a tilt-screen and selfie mode for traveling.
Excellent review, all I needed to know to buy one!

Thanks for the great review ... just curious whether you have tried any other Lumix models before you decided to go with the LX100 such as the DMC-ZS60?

Great review, thanks
Looks awesome!
I am sure I don't have to say it to you at all, but please do a review of the 2nd Gen Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga once you can get your hands on it. Can you do a recommendation/video of the best capable camera under $200. I haven't been able to find any satisfying videos or comparisons on the internet!
That's a tough one since cameras in that price range are dying out thanks to the capable cameras in many smartphones.
LUMIX L7
you can change lens with this camera right?
Should i get this (lx 100) or the panasonic tz 100?
You need to review the sony qx1 lens
What Camera/gear do u use to shoot your reviews? :)
Sony a6000 with Sony wireles hot shoe mic and (mostly) the Zeiss E mount 16-70mm f/4 lens.
MobileTechReview size wise, is LX100 abt the same size as A6000? thx!
MobileTechReview nvm, u read my mind, thx lisa! :]
what is its low light focusing like

does the lens always sticks out when it's on?
Lisa how is AF in low light? I was shooting with my Fuji XT1 in low light bar yesterday and even with latest 4.0 Firmware XT1 chocked and refused to focus (with 35/1.4 lens) at the end of the night, it was dark yes, and backlit. How is this in low light? Not sure what EV rating is, I know Panasonic GX7 is rated at EV-4, not sure how LX100 does in low light. That is an absolute must feature for me
Can you review the RX00?
Hey Lisa, is it possible for you to do 60 fps reviews? Guess it would be cool :)
We record in 60p and upload a 60fps file. What RUclips does with it, well who can say. But there's not a lot of fast moving stuff in our videos where higher frames would be a bonus.
So, almost a year in .What can I expect for pricing on these? They still seem up there at around $700US
The "L" on the camera stands for "Lumix" not "Leica", at least that was always what I thought.
It stands for lumix as its on every lumix camera. Even the ones with nothing to do with leica.
Great review, thanks?
so..which camera i should buy lx100 or fz1000???? thats the question.which is better for video?
great feveiw thanks
LX100 has "24mm" lens. Page 194 manual says, at 4K, it shoots narrow.
What is the focal length when it shoots HD & 4K videos. Thank you,
Hi Lisa... what lens do you use for you a6000? I just got one
I use a few lenses with the a6000. Most often it's the 16-70mm f/4 Zeiss. I also use the Sigma Art 19mm f/2.8 DN for (photo) street shooting.
Thanks Lisa ☺ how is that sigma lense with video ?
Chris Percy It's too wide for the videos we shoot for our channel, so I rarely use it for video.
Ok thanks Lisa :)
Please do not regurgitate misstatements like the A6000 is the fastest focusing mirrorless camera. Please inform yourself before making such silly comments. The GH-4 and G7 focus noticeably faster. I presently own panasonics and used to own the A6000, so I write from actual experience.
Is it good for night photography?
What is better the a6000 or the LX100?
If you are into full frame and APS-C and can't give up that dynamic range and ability to crop, then go for the Lumix LX 100.
dust....uh, it's common with interchangeable camera, when you change len, dust comes!
I carry the lx100 everyday. My a6300 is stuck in m dry cab.
U should up some pictures to compare the quality!.
There are sample photos and a 4k video sample near the end of this video. We'll have samples in our written review as well, and that will be up in a few days.
MobileTechReview Ok, Thanks..good review anyway!.
What happens if you scratch the lens? Could it be replaced? Won't it be a good idea to put a filter on so you don't have to replace the lens?
Definitely! You can't replace the lens. Just put a UV filter and a lens hood and your good.
what good quality and small cameras that has a 'flip' screen can i use?
How about the Ricoh GR? APS-C with a fixed f/2.8 lens.
Is it silent mode, will it stop down for night shots and is it worth the cash for street work?
Maybe another option could be to put a Leica lens, with an adapter, on a Sony a6000?
+Eric Hogan But you have to manually focus and many people don't want to do that. Yes, there is peak, which is lovely on that camera, but native lenses that use the AF is so much nicer. I've used the 35mm Summicron and 50 Summicron on my Sony NEX 5 and NEX 6, but the Sony or Ziess lenses are so much quicker for older eyes, even with Peak.
Do the hp stream 7 please please please
I think the Leica version says Made in Japan. I like the Leica.
LX100 or the GX80 with the 12-32 f3.5-5.6 kit lens? GX80 is 80 Euro more expensive
Lenovo Miix 3 review please. :)
I'm really torn can someone please help me what's better a Sony a6000 or the lumix lx100?
+Cielo Cruz If you want to be able to change to different lenses the a6000 is a better bet, its a great camera. I bought the lx100 for the leica glass and I shoot street photography so I don't need or want to carry extra glass.
Nice review, ma'am. :-)
I wanna buy a point n shoot camera under $500. Plz suggest me a camera.
thanks.
Get RX100 II.
*Thanks!
The L doesn't mean Leica, and the colours and processing of the image are totally different on the Leica version...... Same, but different.
That 16-50mm PZ lens is indeed bad.
cool
I think its a Leica
This seems extremely pointless to me. At that size just get a micro 4/3. Sony still pocket king because TRULY pocketable.
this thing is a pretender. it's nothing that it's advertised or reputed to be. it doesn't have a better sensor than its 1" BSI rivals, it isn't compact and it isn't high res (13MP sure doesn't qualify). all it has on the RX100 series is its deceptively similar name.
Wwwwwwway too long.
You have issues thats for sure
I really like your reviews and I'm a long time fan, but I finally had to unsub because the overly shallow dof of your new videos really hurts my eyes (I always watch your videos on a big screen, maybe it's not a problem on a smartphone or a tablet). I wish you used a different camera better suited for this kind of videos. Anyway, thank you for your reviews and good luck!
