This performance sent it to Number One and stayed there for 7 weeks.
Just went to the Celebration Tour and when this song started the entire crowd went “Awwwwwww.” I got choked up just thinking about it. What a great song.
Awww sweet
Talking to MTV UK, Nile Rodgers confessed that even though “people don’t give Madonna the real respect and credit that’s due her, she absolutely is the single hardest working person I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve worked with literally hundreds of stars.”
According to the legendary musician, working on Like a Virgin album with Madonna was “really phenomenal”.
“Madonna shows up early, stays late, she’ll do every single task you want her to do and more,” adds Nile Rodgers. “She’s the kind of person that you dream about. For me it’s like a dream come true. Probably one of the easiest records of my life I’ve ever made.”
Madonna brings the superstar thing and she brings a work ethic unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
People also don't give her enough credit for her R&B roots which she had right from the start.
💯💯💯
It’s absolutely insane how many people in the comments are talking shit about her performance, she’s always had nerves in front of her asshole peers and I think this was such a beautiful performance and the nerves just made it more endearing
Endearing yes
Pisses me off, too. How many Titans of the music industry could kind of sing, but really couldn’t SING? Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Bee Gees, Phil Collins, Janice Joplin, Hell, The Beatles… Why is it ok that they can’t sing great, but it’s not ok for her??
Empress, you are my fave reaction, period baby
wow thank u!
Empress said it best. Madonna perfroms better in front of her fans better than her peers. Not her best vocal here. She sang this song beautifully in Taiwan in 2015! I think this was just before her Evita vocal training with her vocal couch Joan Lader. She'll pop with Madonna singing accapella /soprano in a future documentary. Evita though! Madonna trully be sangin' for real for real! The next great Madonna era coming up!
Interesting!
She wasn’t at her best live vocally here. Human.
This song always makes think Sukiyaki by A Taste Of Honey . They have certain similar elements.
I remember watching this and feeling so nervous and anxious for her. 😭 it’s a hard song to sing, but she came back towards the end, always the queen, always perfect 🥰🥰
💯💯
Can't wait for You to do the Something To Remember album !
She was nervous, she pulled it off. Also to note while everyone does pre recorded stuff nowadays, mixed with the live vocals, this is 100% live as are all Madonna performances up to this point. Hard song to sing live and she pulled it off. I can feel her getting more confident as the song goes on. Also cool that Babyface was there even though he just mostly provides backing vocals. They worked well together and created some beautiful music. Love the mutual love and understanding they showed. I think she was glad he was there with her. And damn the audience reaction haha they dont get it like this these days at awardsshows? She truly had come back after Erotica, the audience was WILD.
Exactly! Award shows today are so boring
You are 100% right about her live performances.
You are always keeping it real Empress! :)
You already know!
As usual you nailed it, she absolutely get nervous when she’s performing for her peers. The cocky self confidence as swag she normally has disappears for the first verse or so. If you look you can actually see her hands shaking.
But you’re right this was THE song that year! Big international hit! This song, these lyrics and her delivery can still bring me to tears. 😢
🥰thank u! And yaaaas song is 🔥🔥🔥
The late Michael Hutchence from INXS is back with NEW music in 2024 new solo song called One Way! ❤❤❤
How is that possible?
I worked for a clothing manufacturer at the time. We immediately added these Chinese style dresses (called a cheongsam) to the line.
Did they sell out?’
@@EmpressReacts honestly, no 😂 but I got freebies for my friends!
But I've sold a bunch of vintage ones over the years.
@@todddepue681 😂love it
...amazing, how the crowd is completely drowning out the presenter.... *SIR TOM JONES!* (1:06) ....Ol' Boy didn't know what HIT him! ...ha-HAAA!
QUEEN MADONNA CICCONE ❤
Madonna did a commercial in Japan around this time for a tea called Jun.. she plays a goddess who walks into a huge room and is carrying a sword to slay a dragon.. there are a few iconic photos of her in the outfit she wore in the commercial.. including one where she's sitting in this floral chair with a starry background holding a flute.. I wish the song she did for the commercial would leak..
😂now I want to see this
Big finish!!! Love these two together! Crowd was crazy!
I was the 5th viewer to this video and 10th thumbs up! I remember thinking back in the day that it was nice to see Madonna doing something just simple and classy. I think what made this performance was the dress!
Thanks for the views and thumbs 👍. I agree!
Part 2....."you'll see"
I love this live performance, I think her vocals were amazing as well as the Babyface colaboration, it added so much to the song! Madonna made history this May 04th., 2024 here in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, with the last show of her Celebration Tour at the Copacabana beach with a record audience of 2 million people, it was amazing!
It's actually a Chinese-style gown she's wearing. Geisha dresses are different and are from Japan. I think she sounded quite good here, but she does get nervous at first at times when she performs. I think this vocal is better than on the album actually. One of her best live vocals IMO.
Yeah, musically the chords in the song are based on the Chinese scale, so that's why they went with this look for the performance. The video was Spanish-inspired because of the bullfighting storyline.
@@FindingMadonna yes they did go with the bullfight theme in the video, but the music has roots in Chinese chords, so, who knows the thought process. It's a nice song regardless.
Yah it’s called a cheongsam, and geishas wear kimonos.
I remember this performance. It was such a big deal that Face was performing with her. You have to remember that public acknowledgement of black folks' contributions to music (particularly artists who are as deeply indebted to black folks as Madonna is) were very very very rare then. It's really hard I think for millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha to really understand what it was like for previous generations to constantly be disrespected and discounted in the most casual of ways. So for Madge to bring on the greatest American songwriter of that generation to perform with her was a big deal.
Yea - so this is before she really started to work on her voice and taking better care of it. She's not a natural singer and can't always find her right key. When she decided she wanted to do Evita (which was shortly after this album), that's when she got a vocal coach and improved her control and her technical abilities considerably.
Thanks for putting this context 💜
Vulnerable because she’s performing in front of the lions den… these award shows like the Grammys snub her a lot.. yet she’s the biggest mega pop star in the world… so it’s kinda like the disobedient rebel child in school at a parent teachers interview. But when she’s in her own arena… she roars.
💯💯good perspective
Another Babyface Masterpiece 💯
A little shaky at times but overall a decent vocal performance considering this is not an easy song to sing live. She looked great, the song is beautiful ….7 weeks at #1 👍
🔥🔥
Hey EMPRESS!!!!!!! I love that performance 🩵🩵🩵🩵the song GORGEOUS, Madonna and Baby Face looked amazing, I LOVED her dress and hair style for that dress and baby’s suit was straight up sweet it was Nehru almost, fabulous!
And the symphony oh please,,, I think her being slightly “off” as u say,, shows people it’s LIVE , there are so many non believers 🤷🏻♂️🙄😂
You’re wonderful, miss seeing u as often, it’s my fault, Kiss da baaby XOXO ZANE😂🩵💜💙💚🥰
Hey ZANE!!!
👍🥰🥰💙🩵💚
Babyface recall years later in interview to Madonna was very nervous during this performance and she was hugely nervous backstage before the performance. Babyface have a great memory of this ceremony with her this night and was in his heart forever.
Madonna recall years later that was too hard to sing for her and this is the reason she didn't sing a lot this song with the years, but she loved the song and the video herself. She only included this song in the Australian part of the Rebel Heart tour after that.
She also sang it on most of the US dates on the Celebration Tour this year - although it was pitchy.
Interesting
Boy oh boy, she wears well with time. Looking back, what a titan, what a musical giant, a true cultural phenomenon. Remembering when she broke in the early 80s all the girls I knew in Queens suddenly dressed and looked like her. It was overnight.
I agree with you, this is the song, the kids could listen to along with their mom and grandmom and everyone loved it. Kinda like they could with a La Isla Bonita, a Like A Prayer, a Holiday, a Material Girl, a Papa Don't Preach etc. Maybe they could have done with a Rain or Bad Girl but i guess they were too adult to have that broad appeal. Here she was back with that big crossover appeal hit that got played on R&B radio as well as Pop radio, Rythmic, Adult Contemporary...they were all loving it. 7 weeks at #1 didnt lie and neither did the audience reaction. Bless Madonna, they try to paint her as cold and calculated and really she's funny, goofy at time and nervous when she's performing in front of industry crowd despite all the love she gets shown her. She's as human as it gets and everyone who pays attention to her, sees it, shes not cold at all. She gets hurt, she cares about people.
Empress, i always enjoy your videos...
Thank you so much 🤗 Glad you enjoy!
Yes, she always seems much more nervous in front of her peers.
Absolutely gorgeous song. I love this performance for the audience response, for Babyface’s beautiful silky vocal and for the sheer guts and power of Madonna’s vocal. She absolutely starts off a bit shaky, and I’ve said it before too that she’s almost always nervous in award show performances because it’s her peers not her fans, but there are enough beautiful notes and that shift from her warm lower vibrato to that killer belt into her head voice that always gets me excited. When someone’s a real artist I can embrace their imperfections, and I don’t hold with the way people are brutal toward female vocalists perceived “imperfections” while allowing men to have all the idiosyncrasies and human flaws in their voices. It’s just sexism. Sure, there are more technically perfect voices, as I’ve said many times, but Madonna always delivers incredibly committed and compelling performances, with a lot more beauty and power in her voice than people credit her with.
Some of what you’re hearing as her being a bit off at the start is actually a slight tweak to the cadence of the verses. More emphasis on the first two words of each line. Restless Miss Ciccone wanting to reinterpret this massive hit a little to keep it fresh, even while it was still dominating the charts. I prefer the cadence of the released version, but I respect how she isn’t precious about trying things in different ways. Art first, always 👑.
Btw the dress she’s wearing is a Cheongsam, which is a traditional Chinese garment, not a Geisha look, which would be Japanese. Cheongsams became very popular as a vintage style item in the mid 90s. Definitely cultural appropriation, but done in an appreciative way. Such a stunning look.
Cheongsam - got it! Since starting this journey I will second there is a lot more beauty and power in her voice than she gets credit for
The first half of the first verse, it seemed like it was a delay, but she got back on beat and I think they both sounded amazing. 💜
Hope you gonna react to Bedtime Story live performance !!!
Yes I will
I always panic for her, in a non breathing way when watching this performance, as if it’s the first time I’ve watched it 🤪 The way the tempo was slowed down for her to cope with her vocals makes me so nervous. God only knows what she was going through.
😂😂right‼️
Empress! I agree that Madonna has always had nerves and sometimes bumpy performances with award shows. Take a Bow in particular seems to be a hard song for her to perform live, since this was the first and last time, until more recently lol
Dang that’s crazy!
I believe Madonna was nervous both because she’s singing at the AMAs which was more prestigious than the VMAs (but maybe not more than the Scammies) and also because this song is very demanding vocally. This was still before her vocal training for Evita and you can hear her reaching a bit for some of those high notes, but honestly that does give it more of a raw, emotional mood than if she performed a ‘perfect’ vocal. It’s definitely no coincidence that she never performed this song live again UNTIL her recent Celebration Tour, even though it was her most successful single. I think a large part of the appeal was this song was featured on Friends which was a huge TV show at the time… so people not only loved the classic romantic appeal of the song but they also associated it with a show they loved (I never got into it personally, but it certainly had a wide audience). Overall I do enjoy watching this from time to time. There are a couple of bum notes (‘all the world loves a clown’) but it’s quite strong overall… no 🔟🔟🔟s but maybe a solid 8️⃣
😂😂😂one of my favorite comments of yours. Humor - scammers, context - friends, celebration, and most importantly your own pov
@@EmpressReacts ngl, her recent Take A Bow performances arent very good either 😖😅😂
She's not the best vocalist, but damn she always delivers in terms of interpretation, versatility and vocal range. She's about to get some serious vocal training 😉
I love her trained vocals too, but I feel like her vocals lose something with the training, idk
Is there anyway i can get you to react to this band called Crumb? I recommend Locket, Trophy, Part III, Up & Down, and Tunnel (all that you had)
Madonna is always a bit weary when she's a performer at someone else's party...ya know how she can be a bit particular about the details......however...when she come out on a tour she has been a major part of planning....GIRL ON F🔥
It was somewhat of a reinvention album for her. Bedtime Stories.
💯
Can you please react to Elegantly Wasted by INXS , music video version please 😊
She was definitely a little pitchy on this one (and Babyface was too, surprisingly!). I'm usually not a fan of her one-off performances for that reason. She gets nervous on her tours too, but the difference is she has more time to find her groove. She usually sounds better after the first song or two, which is maybe why she sometimes lips the first song of her tours. Of all of her TV performances, "Fever" on Arsenio and "Sooner or Later" at the Oscars are the best and most confident vocally. Coincidentally (or maybe not?), they're both jazz-style standards. 🤔
Babyface confirmed in interview of last years to she was hugely nervous backstage and during this performance, but neitherwise, he have a great memory of this night with her.
A jazz album in the future?
@@EmpressReacts I'm guessing not! Vocally would have been best in the 90s. I'm Breathless is probably the closest we'll ever get. She does do some jazz-inspired performances on some of the later tours.
I do remember watching this live and cringed a bit throughout because Madonna is my girl. I felt bad that she was pitchy and timing seemed off as well at the beginning and in other parts. She did pull it together and belted out a few good notes and loved seeing that she was gracious at the end and acknowledged both the live orchestra and Baby Face. I also thought she looked great - I thought the video would have a Japanese or Chinese vibe when I first heard the audio instead of the matador theme :) so for me the dress at the AMA really worked. She does perform this in couple tours/concerts going forward but not as a permanent part of the set - sorry if this is a spoiler!
Ah, love hearing how you visualized the song before the visual
Not one of her best deliveries but a few things did not go well here. The tempo was way too slow, the sound was off, her nerves and the fact that she is singing with a male singer and what a vocalist Baby Face is. Most of the time she was accompanied by Dona and Nicky from whom she could get her cue/tone back, and that means a lot when the nerves are taking the better part of you.
Finally without dental braces ! 😊👍
😁
@@EmpressReacts 💕
Not one of her better live TV performances, though she's trying, perhaps trying too hard. Not long after this performance she started taking vocal training to prepare for Evita and I wonder if she had started the training before this if her vocals would have been better?
Interesting
GREAT SONG FROM BABYFACE AND MADONNA....CAN YOU REACT TO )( SAMANTHA FOX)( ---I WANNA HAVE SOME FUN

She performed it better in 2015 for the RebelHeart tour… I have to say… the 90s was a great decade for Madonna, but not her best in terms of live performances… the 2000s were better in that department
Interesting!
In the 2000s she solidified herself as the Queen of touring. She was dancing hardcore in her mid 50s even in 2012. she’s superhuman
I LOVE this song but this performance is just ok. She does sound nervous which is not like Madonna
I thought this vocal was actually quite good. It's not unusual for Madonna to be a little pitchy live, I mean let's be honest, but she's still a great performer. She's not known for being a pitch -perfect wide vocal range singer, but she gets her point across. Always was a fan.
