- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- Malicious actors are increasingly using state-owned and commercially-available drone technology to threaten the personnel, infrastructure, and assets of the United States and our allies around the world. Anduril Industries has built a family of systems to counter such threats - and we’re thrilled to welcome the newest addition to that family: Roadrunner.
Roadrunner is a modular, twin-jet powered autonomous air vehicle with extraordinary performance at low cost. Vertical takeoff and landing capability gives Roadrunner the flexibility to rapidly launch from and safely return to any location, pairing high subsonic speed with exceptional agility and stability.
Roadrunner-M is a high-explosive interceptor variant of Roadrunner for ground-based air defense that can rapidly identify, intercept and destroy an array of aerial threats, including large aircraft that are up to 100 times more expensive, or be safely recovered and reused at near-zero cost.
Roadrunner and Roadrunner-Munition (Roadrunner-M) is an operationally-assessed and validated capability that is ready to deploy today.

And the terrorist with an aim to shoot down a commercial jet has the same desire. Scary!
I have two - you want a beer n play sum?
Its a cross between a SAM and Drone, with out the need for the large complex support systems that SAM site needs and easily deployable for battlefield use, most interesting and very useful. Plus, the real road runner at the end was epic!
...road runner, road runner never bothers when he's won.
'cause runnin' down the road is his idea of havin' fun!🎶
It still has to depend on the prexisting large complex support network to find and target the enemy aircraft until endgame. I wonder how it does it?
They have stand alone truck mounted Sam units. You just park the truck and it's ready to go. The Road Runner probably cost 5 times of the truck mounted Sam. I would love to know how 1 road runner is better than 5 truck mounted Sams
@@percival23 good luck getting a SAM truck somewhere with extremely rough terrain. They still need to get in and out of where they want to operate out of.. This looks to be something that can be airdropped in if necessary. They're also implying that they can be networked together, meaning you can run these things in a swarm if necessary. Also, SAMs are supersonic generally and have extremely limited maneuverability and also cannot be recovered on a failed intercept. The roadrunner very much seems made to counter a different sort of threat than a SAM. Not to mention, a roadrunner unit could probably SUPPLEMENT a SAM truck and operate off of one. They're not mutually exclusive like you think they are.
These guys know how to make a presentation
I think it is cute that it returns home. I almost thought it was going to go back into the original case shown at the start of the video!
lol
😊
Right now they probably get picked up at some point, then inspected, refueled and re-loaded into the cases. Later on they'll probably be able to just land back inside the case and do self-diagnostics.
Aside from the great product, shout-out to the people who filmed and edited this video, stunning job !

@@steveanimatrix3887Effective EMPs can't be small... definitely not going to be putting one on a drone, maybe a GPS jammer or something (or really at all for that matter, it'd be a weak GPS jammer). Not going to help against vision/IR guided or vision/IR guided terminal phase stuff. Plus a drone wouldn't be near fast enough to effectively intercept a jet.

Ok Tony
As a career aero engineer for USAF, and drone expert, this was pretty impressive. Still have lots of questions regarding the supporting tech like tracking and radar, operating signature, deployment requirements etc.. but still very impressive with a short clip. Especially the RTB reuse function that is a significant capability. The engineering looks solid good job so far.
That "significant capability" is super cool, but essentially useless, and adds a significant amount of unnecessary mass to the vehicle.
When is it going to ever RTB? It either launched too late, which should've been computed before launch, or it attempted to intercept and was destroyed. Would be interesting to know the tradeoffs required for the RTB feature.
@@-108- I imagine that since the base vehicle was designed as multi-mission, multiple modular payloads then the RTB feature would be more justifiable in other cases than Roadrunner-M. Another way to justify would be that upon launch of multiple interceptors to increase the probability of interception (Kamikaze that is, obviously), once one interceptor has succeeded the rest will RTB safely.
@@mouloudzekar4685How could the other vehicles possibly know whether or not an intercept was successful? That would require extremely valuable time, if it were even possible at all - time that, if lost in the process, would likely make it impossible for the other vehicles to successfully intercept. This would, of course, allow for an RTB, but then we're back to the issues outlined in my first reply.
@-108- The roadrunner can also be used for recon of potential air threats. Things like Shaheed and Orlan pose significant danger to troops but you need to ID the target before hitting launch. Well if the interceptor can go and recon it, realize it isnt a threat, and return, then only the jet fuel was used.
@@TJackson736 Good point.
The last two years we have witnessed incredible change on the field of battle with drone warfare leading the charge of change. My guess is that we are only at the beginning of innovation of things to come. This cool toy I have to say I would rank in the high 90 percentile for innovation and adaptability. One interceptor innovation that is long overdue is the separation of the munition from the delivery vehicle. The "smart" vehicle, with its engines, electronics, avionics, comms, sensors/radars etc., represents 99% of the asset cost and thus it can (and should) be detachable, returnable and reusable. Upon approaching the target at a close enough proximity, it should fire the actual "dumb" warhead (containing nothing but explosives) at the target from a safe distance and then return to the base. This would be a huge cost saver.
The people that can make that a reality will be very wealthy, I'm sure.
Something like that that uses a simplified laser targeting system provided from the 'base' would even counter basic ecm.
Likely a further development of this tech. Bc if they can also make a distributed radar array, thus being harder to take out in a single strike. Then they can have possibly thousands of these boxes spread over an area that disguises which are the interceptors and which are the support structures.
Meshed together so any attempts at manipulating them triggers measures from the others. With maybe a general assault drone force to protect the 'base's. ALSO deployed from variants of these. So none of them are really pointless. They are just traps.
The tracking part of the software must be quite fun and challenging!
Not for the enemy 🤣

I wondered, as it wasn't quite clear, if the M version actually deploys its warhead via proximity ranging, do that the base unit is not "expended" in all cases?
Someone mentioned that they thought it might be easy for an attacking force to "waste" many of these vehicles with many decoy devices, but, with live operators controlling them, it could reduce waste attacks... I'm also interested in the control systems vulnerability to EW blinding and spoofing... I've certainly had some ideas about reducing EW susceptibility...
Slow down to .25x, shows intercept pretty neat. Almost seems to dip down at the last second.
If -M does an intercept, the entire unit is destroyed.
@@JonMartinYXDI was going to say that. The landing functionality is so that if the missile misses it can be recovered instead of exploding like other missiles.
Palmer said in one of his interview, that a group of many interceptors can swarm a target, but only those that actually hit will be consumed, while the other returns and reuse.
Very cool concept. One can launch a bunch of SAMs at a target, but they are all essentially destroyed once they are launched regardless whether they hit the target.
These Roadrunners can swarm a target but don't consume the entire swarm.
If you pause in the right frame you can see the ACME arm toss a package marked T.N.T. at the jet.
Put this in a call of duty game and you’ll have 100,000 trained operators at your disposal in a few years

Production for these videos is awesome. Bravo
The equipment is next level and I want to play.
I hope they install a multi-mode warhead so it can engage ground targets as well, like tanks, IFVs, etc.
yes, to increase functionality and adaptability, would be great to have interchangeable warheads too. Add an HPM warhead so you can take out swarms and also EFP for taking out vehicles. Perhaps in hover mode, have an algorithm to specifically target it so there's optimal focus of detonation on areas not covered by any ERA blocks or cope cages.
@@atacms2020 would be great for intersecting helicopters and large drones.
@@atacms2020it does have an interchangeable payload. Your idea of the optimal targeting area is something I didn't even think of. Wanna start War-X with me? U can be like Elon
You forgot the most important one: artillery.
If this is deployable from close to the front and can be in the air within 5 seconds, and accelerates at 2 gee, then it can reach high subsonic speeds in ~15 seconds from liftoff. At that point it's covering 1 km per ~4 seconds, so in one minute from pressing the button it will have covered 40 km.
That makes it very viable for a counter-artillery role when networked with counterbattery radar. The high subsonic speed does get it to the enemy artillery faster and makes it harder to shoot down, and it could feasibly have the autonomy to detect howitzers.
@@BosonCollider and possibly follow them or find their convoy which if multiple Roadrunners were launched, could then independently attack the convoy by assigning targets to each other. If there are more Roadrunners than there are targets, these things can turn around and land to be used again. Its fricking adaptable as heck!

OMG best video ever honestly...props to the engineers this is a super cool concept and machine!!
Thank you for including a real roadrunner at the end, not clickbait. (The jet rocket thing was cool too I guess.)
I hate to be the first to mention it, but developments like this will lead to counter-developments by hostile forces, then manned fighters will be mostly replaced by autonomous drones, then swarms of drones to attack each other. The "march of progress" never ends and the future is starting to look darker than ever.
Thank you, Teddy. You are the only commenter I have read who has a soul. Thank you for being an exception to the rule.
Make it 100% reusable with a RPG launching nose cone.
Could be reusable by shooting a bunch of small kinetic impactors towards the target or on an intersecting course with the target, kind of like birdshot for ducks and then changing course to evade the debris
so.... a fighter jet?
So this is a kinetic chase down weapon that returns to base? That is freaking crazy. I love it.
Sehr gute Arbeit 👍
Watching from Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 I AM amazed ⚡️⚡️
So, big question: what's the cost vs. a supersonic SHORAD missile at $125,000? I've seen estimates in the "low hundreds of thousands", so if it's 3 times the cost, subsonic (versus a super sonic intercept missile, let's say a Stinger at Mach 2.2), recoverable only if not used, then is it worth it? At what rate can these be fired to the point that being recoverable is a question to be answered? Turnaround time for refueling and staging is still something to consider. If this system were able to release a miniature submunition 1km from target and then return to be rearmed, I would be more impressed and more in line with a "SpaceX type rocket" whereby the first stage is always recoverable. People with more experience can tell me, but I would rather pay 2x for something with a higher hit ratio/kill rate vs cool tech that costs half as much, but that hit ratio is even one-quarter less to save a quarter more people potentially. Cool tech, lots of questions, I look forward to having more answers.
I would assume the estimate is on a fully functional system, and not a pricing on the payload/drone itself. The payload is miniscule compare to a SHORAD missile system, so if the drone with payload costs 3 times 1 missile, yeah that would makes this an almost dead project from the start ^^
Reuseablity is a gimick to some extend, however if they include an easy refueling station in the system package, it can have implecation for imidiate combat readyness, eg simply having more drones to field here and now, due to reuse.
@@saddane6897 Yeah, fair assessment and not enough info from them. Not like our opinions/questions will really matter in the end.
You put it a good way that I wasn't willing to say, but the reusability does appear to be more gimmicky than useful. I don't hear operators being told: "don't use the systems you have access to defeat an incoming threat because of cost." But, I'm not in the military scene, just listen to others who are in the military scene and want some questions answered :-)
Cheaper than a patriot missile at least. It's not like this system has competition right? I really don't know anything about this subject, surely this would have some application if it works even if the accuracy is worse just by being so much cheaper I would think. Again I don't know what other systems are available
Its too expensive and slow to manufacture to make it viable for large scale use. Another boondoggle shiny toy trying to get that sweet tax payer loot.
@@maxdurbin3033 look up SHORAD: Incorporates a vehicle mounted stinger missile system (asking other things , vehicles, and systems) which is much cheaper than Patriot. You can't compare Patriot to these systems because the Patriot is a super-fast medium range intercept system: just one Patriot missile is estimated at $4,000,000 whereas a stinger is about $130,000
loved the video... especially the real roadrunner at the end. (my first time seeing one which is not a cartoon - looks pretty much like the cartoon)
too bad they couldn't put an Acme brick in the background XD
A variant which can go out and autonomously fly CAP over a geographic region and pwn all of the smaller commercial drones would be a literal game changer for militaries in 2023. Basically, think of it as tactical area drone superiority. We're already seeing the effect of such small scale air superiority in Ukraine's attempts to strengthen their river crossing gains and in Avdiivka. In 2023, if only one side gets to use drones tactically, that side has the adavntage.
👍
You're absolutely right. Biggest challenge for a system like that is Hunter/seeker. Those small drones have small signatures and are usually made of plastic. No infrared signature, and very difficult to track on radar. The on-board radio on those drones is pretty much the only way to track them.
If they're fully autonomous you have a true stealth capable vehicle. You're looking for a needle in a haystack.
Optical tracking is probably the best bet for a kill chain, but that requires expensive optics and computing. You're basically trying to recreate an avian predator like the eagle.
You'd probably get better results just training an eagle to attack the drones. 😅
@@Unmannedair If some biological creature can spot the drones visually, then we should be able to build a machine that can do the same. Also, what those enemy drones would be interested in is a known. Why not provide the aerial assets with information from ground cameras scanning for drones?

This drone is good for everything, dropping supplies, destroying targets on air or ground. Could perhaps drop supplies for remote places like food and first aid kits. Could perhaps act as jamming system for drone swarms. Could destroy hypersonic/ballistic/cruise missiles . Could be a near cousin of himars/atacms. The fact it just goes up and descends down all autonomously that is a quality of a drone all praiseworthy.
It could also be used to kill innocent people, blow up dams, and deliver chemical weapons. Jiminy Cricket, Jee Wiz!

I loved the eagle at the end!!! ❤❤
...it was a roadrunner, not an eagle ;_;
man this is something i would have a go with. Wow this looks insanely cool
Maybe what you need is smaller disposable interceptors than can be launched in a swarm to intercept incoming drone swarms. After launch they can loiter for some time in the expected path of incoming drones. If target detected crass on it, using some of the units in the swarm. Other units loiter on waiting for target,.
The area of interest can be re-swarm if needed.
I permanent swarm wall could be maintained, negating incoming paths for enemy drones.
It would be like having a flock of birds flying above.
Drones which have exhausted its battery or fuel, just drop on a defined area, to be recovered, refueled/re-batteried and reused again.
No need fanciful landings, just they parachute or glide down in a way that it can still be used.
Like the coyote 2 interceptor drone or perdix micro drone swarm? They operate like a swarm of locusts.
