It’s been a long night in New York City
It’s been a long night in Baton Rouge
I don’t remember you looking any better
But then again, I don’t remember you

God, this song. First heard it when I was in 10th grade, making my way through school. I had no idea what lay ahead of me - what I was going to do, what I was going to achieve, the things I'd see and feel - none of it. 10 years later, just when I was questioning if I was the same person I used to be - I find this song, or, this song finds me once again. From high school to grad school; from class projects to research projects; from cartoons to movies and presentations; from crushes to real heartbreaks and meeting real women; from knowing classmates who turned on you, to unexpected friends and besties who would be there for life; from moving from one country to another - from one life to another, this has been a wonderful journey. And just listening to this song on Wednesday morning late at 2am, I realised how much of a weird, fortunate juxtaposition it was to be able to relive the same feelings I had when I first heard this song, while also re-interpreting this song in the light of what I've seen in the past 10 years.
Thanks John. Thanks for reminding me of who I used to be, and showing me how far I've come. Hope to meet you again in 10 years.
Till then... who says I can't get stoned?
Beautiful!
I'm not going to lie, this made me tear up a little...
Beautiful commnet:)
Wonderful
Its been a long time since 22. This line hits so hard.
I wish, I’m getting so close to 22 and it scares me every time haha . How far am I getting
I was 22 when this came out, the line definitely hits harder now
John said when he came up with that one specific line he broke down 😢
@@seanthomasson5236 Me two bro. 37 here! Daammm . Time really flies. Enjoy life guys. Respect is the most important thing in the world!
John is easy to just look past. It’s when you stop and really listen you realize he is one of the best guitarists song writers of the generation. Took me picking up guitar to open my ears to what he really is.
Facts
Speaking some wisdom here.
Totally Agree! I am 62 years old, played guitar professionally in my younger years. At 31 years old, I did my last gig, started a business and didn't touch a guitar much for 30 years.. A couple of months ago I picked up an old acoustic and have not been able to put it down. I didn't know much about him except that he was a watch collector and had had a few hits. When you start really listening to his catalouge of music, you find he is an amazing talent , both as a song writer, singer, and guitarist.. He has become a mentor for me, like Clapton, Hendrix and Page in my younger years and gives me inspiration to pick up my guitar everday, and work on my music again.
❤
This song, together with video, reminds me of all the beautiful things that we are going to do after the Corona time is over: go out with friends, laugh and dance, drink at bars and jump into the pools, taking trips to Japan alone and with loved ones, and enjoy every single moment of our lives. Thank you John.
Preach!
Don't take a trip to Italy, Europe or China. You probably know why.
@@swarnendu89 And the USA
@@swarnendu89 Italy is in Europe and USA has it the worst.
Those were simpler times
music critics in general dont get john mayer. Its the fans who are unbiased and receive his music as it is. When people listen they dont listen to dissect it, break it down, compare to past greats, thats not how you listen to music. John mayer will go down in history as oen of the most influential sing songwriters and musicians of 21st century.
Critics can't related to the journey of a musician. Most self written songs are closer to a creative biography rather than what critics deem market fit. Given a chance, most will not be able to produce anything closer to the music they are critiquing.
7 times Grammy's winner. His initial blues were unmatched
I don't really care how many views John Mayer have. One old day, he might be remembered as our generations Johnny Cash. He is atleast mine hero.
Not just you...
+1
he is your Hero? :o how?
If you are alive, and watching this, I agree with you❤
This is one of those songs that put this protective blanket over you to give you the feeling that everything will be ok
:')
Yes!!
Absolutely
There’s a deep sadness in this song that somehow comes across as bittersweet due to the pleasant melody and rebellious lyrics that seem to just be a veil for the true hollowness he seems to feel. I love it
Wow that's incredibly insightful and accurate.
This is how I immediately interpreted it
Pretty typical New York experience and he was able to capture it completely. Legend.
I’m so shallow and stupid I’ve never even considered this 😂 I’m always listening going damn… dudes living it up
"Who says I can't be free from all of the things that I used to be? Rewrite my history. Who says I can't be free?" Best line of this song.
That's love lol in my mind
Who says I can't listen to this song a thousand times..
Your phone battery says charge me nerd
boom bob you can listen while charging bro.....
This albums so criminally underrated 😢
This song makes me feel okay about being more relaxed than everyone else. I don't go out partying as much, but when I do, I do it right, and it's great. I work hard, I have the usual stresses of most people, and have a great social life. I feel like people expect me to fit into the usual student picture - going out getting drunk. I just like to relax and look at life. John Mayer outlines these feeling perfectly here.
This song has so much depth yet it feels like a breeze while listening
John really paints quite a picture with just his guitar....
It´s been a long time since 22, right to the heart
+Santiago Arriola Right to the arriola, more like
+Santiago Arriola deep af
nothing beats youth.
16 years if only I could trun back the time and correct myself
2 years from my age now but I feel it was long time ago
First heard this song when I was six years old and been listening to it since. Thought 22 was so far away. I'm almost 23 now. This one has helped keep things in perspective over the years.
Here's why John Mayer is phenomenal; to be able to play guitar like that, he could lay back on the lyrical intent, he doesn't need to write amazing lyrics, but he does. His melodies, great, he could just show you how amazing he is on guitar again but he doesn't. The thing is EVERYTHING has a 100% focus. John's melodies, lyrics, riffs, choruses, intent, beat, etc; he gives everything 100% focus. With Mayer, EVERYTHING in each song is given due focus. THAT'S why he's my favourite working musician right now. He could phone it all in - but he never does.
Just turned 65 a few days ago and just got into listening to John Mayer. I grew up in the 60's and listened to of course the Beatles and also listened to Michael Franks who John Mayer reminds me of but better. Love John's music and his off the charts talent.
When you don't have a time machine but have old songs.
best thought i hv heard ever :)
Sayak Sarkar 💙
ÀMEN
fuck we're getting old pls stop
The best comment ever.
I used to listen this song when i was 5-6 years old and i am 17 today.(my birthday 17 nov). i can listen to this song 10000 times, now its part of my childhood
The greatest thing about this video is that it really depicts long New York nights. Not everyone will understand it, but many do. It truly encapsulates the New York experience. Here’s to many more endless nights.
the saddest thing is to be
a minute to someone,
when you've made them your eternity.
John Mayer's voice is soo comforting that whichever song he sings, it always sounds like a lullaby.
Love this man and his music
Dear Lord, could this song be any more perfect ? No ? Agreed.
I’m 30 now. This song came out in my high school years. It certainly has been a long time since 22.
Exactly
great way to hang out in nyc with a superstar.
he plays guitar as an extension of his heart - love this song
No matter if I am Happy, Sad, Angry ot Tensed, this is my Go to Song which literally calms me down. Thank you John for such a beautiful song
I’ve been listening to this song since I was like 12, always loved its vibe and the nostalgia it always caused me. I’m 28 living on my own in another state now listening to it while smoking some weed in the dead of the night, it means so much more now, I feel like I just wanted to send a message to myself in the past and say that everything is fine, you made it!!
It's been a long time since 22 🎶 Such a powerful line..
This song is everything to me. It describes the moment or moments in your life describing what you want to do with whoever you want to do it with.
Loved it so much I had to learn it asap. There's 2 riffs I found impossible to play & sing at the same time. Then again, I'm sure the rest of the song don't sound like he plays it either. Who am I kidding? J.M. is the very best, a music god! I was told those riffs may be "time signature changes". But I don't know theory, play by ear only. In 56 yrs of playing, I never found anyone like him. A rare treasure indeed...!!!!
God, I love him
He is a very talented musician
I love how the video is so lively and fun and energetic, but at the same time it blends so well with a soft, innocent song. Great job John!
Yep
I absolutely love the meaning behind this song!
God I want to be young again
why do you need to be young, dont die with any regrets, if you want to go skydiving or what ever you wish you could have done do it man ... no ones stopping you but yourself
Stay young in ur mind! Thats the most important!
Always be young inside... Life is short, leave no regrets.
Age is just a number in your head, who says you aren't young?
Real @@dr.jekyll2620
This song is about being free and living your life despite what other people want you to do
John Mayer already invented time travel back in 2009. This song is like the soundtrack of nostalgia and im not even 22 yet.
John Mayer songs are the best
Anarghya 12 agreed!
Thank you Lord for John Mayer
Heard this song first when I was in school, but lately it's been hitting different. Like it's speaking directly to my 20 something year old soul.
2024 listening to this masterpiece that feels like butter on my ears.
A beautiful throwback
" BUT AGAIN THEN .. I DONT REMEMBER YOU " .. 💯👍🏾
I've always felt like this part of his life, of his music was the most lonely one... I guess i could be right.
Going out trying to find yourself in others and just show a plain pretended smile until you go to bed and forget everything for a little while.
Love you John, always have, always will.
If any song was both underrated and popular at the same time.
Thanks Fitz for this amazing tune
Why ppl say the song is heartwarming baffles me. I always feel so lonely and cold listening to this
Makes you feel alone, but in a good way.
a way that makes you trace your steps back, and figure out if you're in the right direction :)
Crazy how songwriting can do that to you
It's 12:30 of night and I wonder how many times I've listened to it today...now I've to go to sleep...Good night everyone...May, Allah, Jesus, and every God bless you and me,
the kind of song where you smile at old sweet memories
For real.
Only JM can sing such direct, realistic thoughts while sounding dreamy!
I love you John
Hello Gloria how are you doing hopefully you are doing good??
How does he just keep getting more and more attractive?
true dat ... does dat make me gay though ?!
praneeth no worries in being gay tho that totaly cool
The fame is making him more attractive
Well, better looking clothes and better stylists.
i think growing up and loving his passion makes him John Mayer.
He is Mellow - Genuine - Owns his Guitar and sings it like it is... He is Free★★★★★
My crush is a huge fan of John Mayer, I really hope she gets to meet him one fine day :)
This song is here to stay for a long long nights ( Even after, we are all gone 🍻🍻)
he is so talented still under rated
+Louis lyles jr I think he means a lot of people write him off as a pop-act and a tool because he dated Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift (and dumped all 3 of them, mind you) but he really is one of the greatest guitarists/song-writers of all time. He's up there with the likes of Hendrix and Clapton.
+Louis lyles jr I mean look at views, this songs deserves much more views..
+lief iek i think a lot of people just think he's a tool, regardless of who he dated. The "dumped all three of them" line makes you a tool btw. Who the fuck says that? Let's not get carried away with the accolades. He is a good musician.
+Rasens99 hahaha, I realized that was a bit of a stretched comparison after I commented it. But we can agree, Mayer is way good. Better than what a lot of people give him credit for.
He could have gone down as a wasted talent, but John mayer will be remembered as a master musician imo.
One of my fav song ❤
My friend brother introduced this song to me now i listen this song everyday in the dark room closing eyes
Remember when you were 22? All those dreams? All the laughter. They seem like an old broken dream. Life's not bad. It's fine. But the magic's gone.
Sayak Sarkar that went right into my heart. I agree with you
I just discovered this song in 2019... what have I been doing?
Martin Carrasco me too!! Dammit! At least we have it now
Living under a rock 👀
Same,
I discovered Battle Studies 2 weeks ago.
I hope you have listened to his other songs as well. If not, then I envy you, because I can never relive listening to them for the first time
Haha😂😂
nobody's saying anything john...you go on, do whatever you want..you are the best
he has joined the ranks of "The GREATS" from the 70s this boy knows how to play guitar and sing ..everything is original when done by a GREAT .. listen to his guitar his blues all of his music..he is a young master without doubt and if you dont see this .. you dont know much .. :-P
this guy is the god newest god of guitar, the greats have passed on their legacy to him.
Hello Carol how are you doing hopefully you are doing good??
Makes me feel missing my childhood even though i'm 18. Greatest song that ive ever heard.
My main inspiration to pick up the guitar
This song makes me wanna go on a road trip with friends, roll down the windows, jump in a lake, pet a dog, and hug everyone.
+JackyK finally someone said what was in my head.
+Mehreen Dhillon haha glad you feel the same :)
Hahah yes. Sounds like a good trip to me
this song makes me want to get stoned
I'm glad someone feels the same way as me.. I thought everyone just feels like getting stoned listening to this 😂
This. This will only get, better.
This song puts me at ease
this.. takes me back to good old memories..
When I win the lottery I will have him come play at my place .., favorite musician ever! Glad I go to see him n Kansas City!
Wow to be in the between moments of life, searching for something better. Keep searching, you Will find the light. Amen. Love your soul John Mayer. Keep searching, keep learning, the truth will be known to you, that’s a promise. Amen
the man is a legend
this song meaning is too broad, it can't even be described with a words but only can be felt with a variation situation.
1. if you are sad, listen to this, you will become happy.
2. if you are happy, listen to this, you will become energetic.
3. if you are energetic, listen to this, you will desire to travel arround the world.
4. if you are travelling, listen to this, you will make a great memory!
Well said
To me, this song is actually kind of sad.
@@AndromedaEleven How so?
That's the Magic Of Mr.J.C Mayer
Idk it's always been a sad song for me. Same vibes with Roll it On Home.
I love this song... Remember me, my old days.....
Watching this video makes me want to go back there. And never come back. There is no reason to. Splendid
So many people took this song at face value lyrically; I've always listened to it under the impression it was about being "stoned on" love. It's the notion of constantly recalling lost love from a time gone by in your mind. Much more melancholy than it would appear, I think.
Still remember when i first heard this song, we were on a trip to country side of our little state Mizoram. My elder brother and his friends brought along some weed and we hit it on the roadside for a break. I was so stoned the f**k out, that me and my brother got into an argument but one of his friend gently pulled me down," Hey Rem listen and you'll feel better ". As soon as he played i was like on a whole new dimension, i feel like i was going to float lay on the mid air vibing to it😆 waving every aeroplane that pass by🤣..
wow 2016 and still better than a lot of song from this year, i hope we get back to a more instrumental music, i dislike a lot of songs with too much autotune and also synthetic sounds of instruments :c
Henry Flores Recinos same here, I can't some of the songs that they compose these days
This is my go to Song/video when life gets tough!!! Thank you jm
2019 and this song is still one of my most played, WHO'S WITH ME
Awww those days when you discover a new favorite song!
This makes me smile everytime I listen.
A song that speaks to all the bullies in your life, a raised middle-finger to the condescending shmucks that aim at holding you down.
I just love this music cant stop playing
I’m stoned & listening this rn
Life is beautiful

fantastic.hats off man
It’s almost 10 years since this song was published here, still making me high listening to it
My fav line since i was kid when i first listened to this song is " who says i can't take time to meet all the girls on the county line" golden songwriting at its finest he's basically saying its up to you you can keep meeting women for no matter what age and get high no matter what age. See age is a state of mind and fitz was able to do it with this song! Cheers
remember my college days..and Christmas 2010
music at its finest.
The government John, the government
Hahahaha! True.
Haha true
I think he had the govt in mind when he wrote this song and In the lines "who says i cant be free" were implying that our government was built for freedom and by illegalizing something more harmless then a cigarette theyre sorta taking away our rights like he just wants to smoke a bit to make him happy and calm his nerves why dont people mind there own buisness and let the guy to what he wants. I dont mean offence or direct hat or anything but there are a lot of comments about the govt
Kyra Holmquist
lol dont be a pussy the govt is fucked and doesnt deserve anything but our true hate. The same hate they put out when they need more oil, more gold etc. History tells the truth... btw how are the "Indians" doing in their own country?
mike gans oh you are spreading laughter dude :D
John Meyer; The best country music artist. You the young best ever lived country musician i know, I am all the way from Africa, in South Africa. I love your work man. God bless.
One of his top 5
Na. Maybe one of the most popular, but he has so much better songs than this one
Just listened to this 4 times in a row
Update: I have now listened to this 6 times

Bob Brigglet congratulations.
This song its been a while, but its still amazing..
ouvindo em 2024 essa pedrada ....
Listening to this stoned. Perfect!
Gives me chills
It kinda fucked up that this song only got 9 million views, while justin bibers baby song got like 800 million views or one directions song got like 400 millions. Its kinda sad whats happend with the new generation. But oh well thank god justin bieber is stopping music. And ye this song deservs atleast 100 million views! Cheers from sweden! and merry christmas too all of you!
Real artists are being forgotten by our generation... John Mayer is one example!
Unfortunately he is so underrated!
***** I agree that real artist are being forgotten by this generation. BUT. Mr. Mayer is pretty well-rated: He has a fortune of around 60million dollars, and has won several guitar-awards. He has sold over 15m albums around the world. And that besides the fact that he is only 36 ! Im a big fan of Mayer's work, never bores me.
casper van helvoirt i'm a huge fan of his work too! I love it... (he's my favorite artist) I know he have won all this awards you mentioned... I said he's underrated because i'm 16 years old and most of my friends didnt know who john mayer was until i show his work to them! ;)
It's really rare to see someone replying to another person so politely just like you did! It's also really difficult to make a decent conversation without someone criticizing you (in a bad way) here on RUclips ;)
Hey jb's cool. His music is pretty good, at least his new music mostly. Just because his music isn't your type doesnt mean it is bad. Grow the fuck up and start respecting music. He has so many fans so his music must mean something to them. His talent is undeniable. We all have different taste in music so relax and stop hating and being so disrespectful
snoopy garcia The thing is... he's kind of a douche. The hate may or may not have carried over from his earlier days, compounding the attention, but he is in essence an abnormally large douche.
It’s been a long night in NYC.....It’s been a long time since 22. Bless xx
