HOLY CRAP! MY MULLET GREW BACK WATCHING THIS VIDEO!
Bloody hell! So did mine! And I'm in a ute drinking stubbies on my way to an Angels gig.
WTF is happening. ..
and my cars headlamp went pop-up!
My hair naturally grows into a mullet LMAO
😂
@@pkepix5405 how much would Hulk
Fun fact: The "wind effect" shown in the intro (as you can see Andy's hair flowing) did not come from a fan - it was actually caused by the chorus pedal. The 80's were a different time, man.
Andy, where can you buy the fromel chorus, the one you use in your video ,I have looked everywhere, can you help out in locating a unit like this ,thanks, chris
I have always loved that clean '80s sound, and as a non-musician I have always wondered how it was achieved. It can also be heard in "Run to You" by Bryan Adams and "Magic" by The Cars.
Just remove ALL the mids and compress and chorus the fook out of it.
@@granthambeard I knew about the chorus and compression but didn’t know cutting mids was a part of it too. Next time I’m jamming on my Roland jc22 I’m gonna dial the mids completely off
@@granthambeard Basically if you want a *good interpretation* of 80s tone, take any Fender tube amp, run bass mids and treble at roughly noon, add aggressive compression and tri-stereo chorus. You may want to cut the bass, but I feel like the thud of the bass on those amps is an important aspect to the sound.
Truthfully, a lot of those old tones were pretty bad courtesy of running directly into the board - very few boards sound as incredible as the one David Gilmour ran into for the Brick In The Wall solo. A lot of weird, sterile tones that were considered cool at the time. Direct tones can be cool, you just have to give it some color.
@@granthambeardhow do you cut mids, on your amp?
it was archived using the roland JC amp. Not stuff that reverb is saying
The Rockman clean tone is so killer. That SUPER high end shimmer is something people just don't go for any more. Now it's all about warmth and T O N E , so it's a very distinctive sound.
"Warmth" is often used by many to describe tones that are clearly bright and sparkly.
The use of "its a warm tone" is entirely left up to interpretation.
Which means that people are just repeating what they have heard by others in a typical "herd" mentality.
These chorus effects make me feel like I am living in the 80s
You guys should really do it for other decades/genres, it would certainly be a very interesting and helpful series!!
I second this!
That Hysteria picked progression is pretty epic.
Yes it sounded so beautiful
I think you forgot the mountains of cocaine they did. It was pretty essential to their sound for sure.
And the pick haha
The "ha ha" mtns of coke they did would have obviates any successes they achieved through its use. Ozzie once said, in a moment of lucid insight: "If you wanna play stoned, you better practise stoned!" Don't trick yourself into thinking coke, or anything else, will take the place of true vision and solid work ethic. Look at Aerosmith. ASK Perry and/or Tyler ... when/if you have the opportunity, ask anyone in the "27 Club".
I have had the unique life of a professional songwriter and, then, a M.D. I have seen and recorded with some of the very best ... and I have seen, as Neil Young tried to warn those of us to come (perhaps warning himself) of "the needle and the damage done" re:heroin ...
Sorry, but to me coke and its vocal cord-frying, cardiac toxicity and arrhythmias subsequent to One use, is not a laughing matter. God bless and keep you ...
Ant Thomas Please see my response to Aiden Campbell ...
Well John. If we can't laugh about all the time and money we wasted in our youth on that crap. What can we do?
But those are expensive...like more expensive than one's actual gear
Andy please do a stoner rock setup.
ThatGuy Reiji shove as many fuzzes on a board as you can and make sure there’s no treble in sight
tune low, play slow
magradygrind that is the best stoner rock description i have heard
tbh fucking nailed it
#AndysStoneTips
That Ibanez Destroyer though... !
Had the Flying V version in that colour in 1983, loved that model
It's been on my list ever since I saw it in Adrian Smith's hands in the Run to the hills video. It's such a cool shape, especially in that colour, 2 super distortions and we're off! I doubt I'll like it as a playing guitar though. Better as a unicorn.
Cast To Void It was my first guitar and it plays better than anything I’ve had since! Not really something you play for all genres though 😁
Cast To Void I use mine to record all different styles. Love it! It plays like a Tele Deluxe.
Sexy AF guitar
I immediately started singing "Bringin on the heartache" until you finished, paused the video, watched a video of the whole song, sang along with that, then came back and finished watching this video. Way to take me waaaay back to my childhood. Well done.
Can we get an 80s dedicated series
I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting half the video to be Def Leppard but it made my week
Bringin' on the heartbreak
5:35 I come from a land down under
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder??
You better run, you better take cover
All he needs now is a Vegemite...suundwijj...😁😁😁😁
Buying bread from a man in Brussels..
I've dug so deep into the hysteria tone and rockman units. Even blowing up images of Phil and Steve's demo stations to see if it's a rockman X100 or soloist or any other type. Great Video!
1:11 says it all about the 80s sound
That chorus is LEGIT... fuckin aye... that has to be the best sounding chorus pedal I've ever heard.
Woah! You NAILED the "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" tone. I seriously thought it was isolated tracks from the recording.
Def Leppard and Boston. You've made me very happy!
Me too. Good work
I think the Ibanez destroyer helped with it, even though Phil didn’t play on that album it just works
How is he getting that harmonizing effect at the beginning? It's amazing!
@@tylerrobison2230 I believe he’s just multitracking it.
Thanks Andy, you nailed the 80's sound and you played great. I've got my 3 pedals hooked up and playing some now.
"Hey, it's Andy with Reverb" still doesn't sound right to my brain...
Pro Guitar Shop forever
Wait, why? 😂
Great tones. Andy is gold for any company trying to market anything. Every one of his demos are so damn good.
That chorus pedal sounds so good I almost cried! it really sounds great! it kinda has a flangy thing to it
That Ibanez Destroyer looks and sound wonderful. Nice 80’s approach for beginners guitarist that wanna get the classic sound of rock.
The wind blowing in your hair is a nice added touch.. that’s a definite essential
For a second there around 2:15 I thought you were using a pick. Almost spit out my teeth.
Well done my dude.
Rock on! 🤘🤘
The Reverend on the wall looks cool.
I have an X100 and some Rockman modules. Nice tip of the cap here-three very cool pedals!
while he was riffing in the beginning there was a fan blowing at him to keep his hair looking luscious and mystical. props for direction 10/10
LOVE that Suhr.
i was watching this video with my friend and we both look at each other and say "wait, thats andy!!" reverb nabbed on of the best people to demo pedals in my opinion.
Check his new youtube channel andydemos
Also helps to have pre distortion EQ boosting 800hz and post distortion EQ boosting 500hz and cutting 2k for the Rockman esque distortion. There are some other cuts and boosts in there too but those are the 3 key frequencies.
I used a Rockman on a demo years ago ..i instantly recognized it on def leppards record ..👍👍great video
The "Boston sound" is difficult to replicate without the actual Rockman. There's some very important EQ settings that have to be done to get that tight sound. The X100 pretty much takes care of it.
Right. The EQ and it's settings is actually the secret to it all.
The "Secret" is bumping the Mids in the 400 & 1000-2000 KHz region.
Those melody's filled the house back then. Do miss hearing it!
Love that Bringin on the Heartbreak!
Come on, Andy! You started with a Pitch Shifter / Harmonizer, that is another 80s treat, you could have at lest mentioned it. Deserves a follow-up video!
Beautiful tone! Wow, this sound takes me back...all the way to last week when I was listening to 80's music. HA.
Man that was a great lesson and bang on 80's tones!!
Bravo, Andy! Just perfect.😎
Andy, thank you for knowing all the hits.
Cool!! Gotta try this sometime soon!!!
Bringin' On the Heartbreak was on High N' Dry. The Rock Man was not released until 1982. If you don't have a rock man or rock box, you'll need and echo plus the three effects he mentions.
AWESOME ANDY !!
Bringin' On the Heartbreak, Bro! Spot on, dude!
That Def Leppard riff got me chills
Bravo Andy - the sounds remind me .....great guitar tones!
I had the Rockman. I never knew it was used to record albums!
Andy kicks ass. Reverb channel is awesome!
Outstanding video my friend
Ah, the Ibanez Destroyer. The still reigning champion of headstock drops.
have you played an Iceman?
Move your strap buttons. A whole new world awaits!
That Boston’s More Than A Feeling’s distortion around 3:00 can also be heard in many early 80’s Rush songs.
The transition from clean to dirty @ minute 6:00 had me over the roof
You're bringing on the heartacheeeeeeee!!
I'm going and buying a Rockman when my next paycheck comes in! I love it!
Be sure to get the power supply that was made for it too, because those things ate AAs eight at a time.
And not any old power supply will do; the Rockman ran off a power supply that had a center-tapped ground.
That little unit sounds incredible !
I have a Destroyer II just like that one, only in blue!!!♡♡♡
Now I realizing that I am nitpicking here, but "Bringing On the Heartbreak " was actually on High and Dry. Two albums prior to Hysteria. Although the guitar tone on that song is very similar to that of the Hysteria album (especially the re-recorded version with Phil Collen who used a Destroyer II).
My first thought, too. That was on High ‘n’ Dry…which was edgier than Hysteria. Still, a great video on how to recreate some of my favorite tones.
LOVE YOUR STYLE
Pretty spot On with that Def Leppard loop👌🏼
I used to have a Galien Kruger head that nailed that tone. It was great for that clean tone . I used to blend it with a JCM for some clarity under the dirt. Great sounds and playing as usual Andy 🎸🎸🎸
i saw a sg custom(i dont remember the brand)of other player that she has exactly the same tone at 3:00 without this device pedals etc, from her maker(japanese instrument) and a bit more heavier ive been listening his videos all the time due to this tone. so i understand what are you saying! hope to find such an instrument with my beloved tone.
Love the unskinny bop riff ;D
Really great video. Keep it up!
Great deep cut!
Spot on Andy everytime!
that chorus pedal is gorgeous
Excellent!!
Great enough for 80s rock n roll👍🏻👍🏻
i had that rockman, when I was in the Navy, it was easy to play when traveling, no amps to carry around etc. just that and a guitar.. And it sounded great for a such a little unit.
They need to bring the original rockman back.
Thing ate batteries like candy though.
Thanks a bunch
I love how the beginning is is Def Leppard
Love that clean Riff!
-thank you so much!!!!
awesome, as usual
Andy God Love Ya Bruddah, thats my childhood right there Bro!! Awesome Intro!! Great video and playing, stay well, stay groovy!!!
tmitz73 It's "brah", short for "braddah", like in Hawaiian pidgin! Wherever did *bruh* come from; it's WRONG!!
How to sound like kill em all era kirk hammett: tube screamer, a marshall and a slapback delay for solos
I think Mutt Lange had them break up chords and play them one note per track, building chords out of all the layered tracks to make it sound even bigger. Don’t know if it’s true, but why not try that next time you make a demo for your band. 😄
They go into this in the series "classic albums"
The "Mutt Lange sound" cannot be replicated with pedals, it's the magic result of masterful studio work and having a very creative but dictator-like producer.
That must be a myth. There´s only a finite amount of tracks available, not to mention one can only record a finite number of times on any given tape, before you´ll ruin it.
Did you watch Phil Collen with Nikki Sixx too
RickyboyH they could've put it into a bus and bounced down the bus
Great video. Don't forget to add at times, Phaser and Flanger pedals to the signal chain... when needed.
Well done Andy!
Scholz should be in the HOF based on the Rockman amplifiers, and building the studio and much of the equipment for the first Boston album. If that doesn't put him in, the music should have long ago. As Eddie Trunk says Hall Of "Shame".
Haha wow the ROCKMAN! I had one of those as my first amp. Had totally forgotten about that.
So good!
Great tone !
It made me so happy to click ona video and hear *bringing on the heartbreak*
Holy cow! I have that identical guitar ...bought it New in 1982. Still mint too.. Ibanez DT50 Destroyer ll
I bought my first "Real" guitar, A Kramer with Floyd Rose in '82, ("real" as in my first electric was a Palmer imitation strat that cost $150. Wasn't too bad, after I replaced the whack single coil pickup with a Duncan Single Stack. I demo'd the Kramer at a boutique guitar shop that let me check it out through a Rockman with headphones... listening to myself play through stereo chorus headphones sounded awesome, great way to sell a guitar, haha.
They sound great, but the distortion wears on you after a while. It's good, but still has that metallic fizz that once your ears lock onto it, there's no shaking it.
In 80's there was not only hair metal. There was also a lot of more underground but interesting and innovative guitarists, like John McGeoch, Robert Smith, Johnny Marr...
Andy for President 2020 Make Rock n Roll Great Again
Great job, you hit it.
The V-2 pickups in the 1982 destroyer and Rocket Roll 2 are absolutely spot on for 80s metal, made by Maxon under licence from DiMarzio they are just shred-tastic. They're a quite a bit brighter than a SuperDistortion but constructed similarly. The closest current production DiMarzio is the Evolution, but its not nailing the low End string pinch harmonics as well as the V-2. The hex-pole V-2 is very different to the later screw and slug vintage/hot V2 of mostly 90s Ibanez.
I'm amazed by your picking techniques...ufff
Good you could make a video of the sound of The Cure's Guitar especially from the 80s and above as it sounded for example in his Album The Cure In Concert 1984 or else of the In Orange Concert of 1986, that sound of Robert Smith's Guitar It fascinates me but I would like to see how to set the pedals, greetings!
Would be great if you could do a how to on your picking technique.....without a pick? Mad skills.
For real! I was like wait...whaaa?! When he opened his fingers.
I'd have said delay, chorus and distortion myself but this is cool too! :)
That ibanez Destroyer is awesome!
Could you do a video on how to use delay or what type of delays to use when incorporating it with high gain rhythm playing (like for metal) and show the settings for those delays so there's not any crazy noises?
I used to gig with an X100... those were the days
very useful
Bringing on the heartbreak was exact to the album tone for that song off of the High n Dry album.
Def Leppard's best album.
Wow the timing of watching this video was ideal for me...i have a boss cs3 joyo analog chorus and boss ds1...could you please suggest settings and the order of pedals from the guitar to the amp..thanks..
Fellow guitarists: The Joyo US Dream sounds exactly like Suhr Riot (I own both), and its $35.
Thanks
