A bit late watching youtube bot forgot to tell me you had uploaded this. The fence looks great and if I had not bought a lot of plastic sheet recently would of had a look at using this instead. If I need more for another building later on I will try it out.
About 40 years ago, I was on one of those “somewhere in England” to Aberdeen trains with a very English guard. He managed many of the Scottish names in his announcement (including Kirkaldy) but pronounced Leuchars as Lurchers. Incidentally, I am in Lancaster where we also had a linoleum works. Lovely layout and I love the “it’s not a race” attitude. Looking forward to the next one, whenever it turns up.
Cheers! Yeah it’s not a race for me. Some RUclipsrs will do endless (repeat) videos just to get a video up and to get views. I upload when I think there is something worth filming. Funny, I was doing a bit of research on linoleum in the uk and Lancaster came up!
Wow Nairn’s , that took me back when mum and dad decided to cover up the quarry tiles in the kitchen with top quality Nairn Lino. That is one of the secrets of modelling I think. Great layout. I can feel the excitement. best regards Alex.
Looking fantastic, love the corrugated fencing. I’d probably wouldn’t weather the new ballast. I’d make It look as if some engineering works had recently been done. Whatever you do it will look great.
It’s perhaps a bit too clean. But I see your point. I might make the ballast on the incline cleaner as I’ve yet to fully weather the ballast there. :-)
Another great informative video David and what a beautiful loco that Class 92 is. Pennies being saved up as we speak!!). We spoke a few months ago regarding the Accurascale Class 66 Prostate Cancer Loco. Patrick Conboy from Accurascale reached out to me and told me they often keep one or two back in case of warranty claims and if one became available he'd let me know. True to his word, Patrick sent me a message to let me know one was available to me a few weeks later, which I grabbed with both hands. It's now in the cupboard ready to take pride of place when the layout is finished. Looking forward to your next video - giving me a lot of inspiration. Kindest regards, Bob. (YT - nomad railway)
A thought for the factory area, take a photo of the corrugated fence, scale it down slightly, and then stick to the backscene. Have some of the grass showing underneath, this should give the optical illusion that the area continues back into the backscene. I suggested something similar for the back of the gasometers
Great video Dave. With the factory, we'd say it's a good day for the Queen to visit lol. Very clean atm, but I know with your attention to detail, it won't stay like that for long lol. Keep up the good work
Cheers. While the Factory buildings are weathered the yard needs some junk and stuff. While I don’t want to over do it, I’ll be looking to add something. :-) plus it’s not as clean and bright as the camera shows….ive got lights for filming that make it look bright and less grimy :-)
Excellent video Dave. I work alot out on the South Wales main line & Bristol way. The newest approach to getting cabling from the troughing to the opposite side of the track is to put them in specially made metal hollow sleepers which allows the cabling to pass through without fear of being trapped or indeed accidentally tamped. Another boring fact for you is the orange pipes are called UTX pipes or Under Track crossing pipes. Love the videos. Would love to see one about how you made the mutiple track OLE. This is one task facing me on my own layout. All the best 👍
Cheers. Thanks for that info too. Oh I did a video in the distant past about the OHLE. It wasn’t a quick job, but I’m pleased with the results :-) Cheers Dave
Great update here Dave, some great work done. Big fan of having drivers in the cabs of our locomotives, I do with we could buy a big pack of them like we can for seated figures though, most times when I’m thinking of fitting a driver tone of my models looking online so many places charge quite a price for them, now sure they are painted up but it’s just a small figure, Accurascales have interested me but not got round to pickup it any up, to be honest it would just be better for manufacturers to include them with the model, after all that is what hornby have been doing recently with many of their new releases and hornbys ones are actually very good. A great update overall here Dave, keep up the great work.
I'm reluctant to be critical David, as your work and videos are both outstanding. However, I think the corrugated fence panels should be on the other side of the "wire", away from the track. The part that covers the lower railway track would be impossible to install without scaffolding over the track, but if the panels were on the side of the building they could be done from the roadway. Again, it's very minor in a really great update.
Hi.This is the way they should be…it would stop trespassers climbing up the outside of the fencing and getting into the factory grounds. The fence is the property of the factory, not the railway. So the flat side would always be pointing outwards. Installing it would have been a manual job, sheets of corrugated metal fixed in place with bolts etc. There is room between the fence and the tunnel walling for people to fit too :-) If it was BR fencing installed then it would be the other way around, to keep people off the railway. I used photos for reference with this one. Cheers Dave
Dave interesting update, the factory is coming along nicely and the corrugated fencing looks excellent I do,wonder however if it needs to be the other way around with the frame facing the railway as otherwise you would need to be standing rail side to fix panels in place. Don’t know if you can find any photos of such a location
Cheers. The fencing in this instance is correct….as if it was the other way around people on the outside could use the Frame to climb up. Defeating the purpose of a security fence/boundary fence. I used photos of such fencing at a few sites locally and also checked online. The fencing will be positioned so that the flat face is outwards, away from the plot of land being fenced off.
@@DeanPark Dave the railway is different from other sites, you would have to be on the railway land to install the sheets which you can only do under a possession while complying with railway standards. The railway would only be interested in stopping people climbing gaining access to the railway not the other way around. You would have to be trespassing on the railway to climb onto factory site. On non railway boundary sites you have a right of access to maintain a fence the same does not apply to the railway. With corrugated sheet fencing you would have to be on the panel side to install it. I was recently involved in a site in Hertford where the old railway boundary fence was a wire and post fence and the adjacent landowner had installed their own fence at some stage in the past but this had to be installed on their land outside of the railway boundary and had to be installed from their side of boundary.
@@garylong7599 Thats how it is today but I agree with Dave Back in the 60's or earlier when the company put the fence up they would just go trackside and do it. Even in early 80's you could go trackside with no one really bothering about you being there.
Should you decide to do more graffiti, be sure to include the names: Wullie, Fat Bob, Wee Eck, & Soapy Souter, or variations thereof. If I remember correctly, you already have some graffiti depicting that of a Fife football club. I like the Scottish theme of this layout
Hi. No as 99% of the time it runs the same way as I’ve got a coupler at one end only. So unless it’s light engine moves it’s only usually running with the number one end leading.
Looking good again, nice progress on the layout. Just one thing ... did you forget to place a sleeper on the outside track below the rail joiners ? @16:56 ??
Personally, I like the conduit under the track, whether it's prototypical or not. But then I'm not filming my layout for armchair critics! Do you use plain water or wet water (water with a couple of drops of washing up liquid) before you apply the glue mix? I know there's a million ways to do ballast and either way works. Like the corrugated fencing. I have a tool I saw Luke Towan use to create my own corrugated iron panels. To be honest, sometimes making your own is overrated! Cheers
I value my time so if it’s available to buy I’ll have a look. It’s not as if it’s a massive detail. I’d rather spend my time doing scratch built buildings. As for the ballast…I wet the ballast with plain old tap water. The drops of washing up liquid are in the glue mix.
@@DeanPark I put washing up liquid in both, but whatever works best is great. Looking forward to watching the linoleum factory progress - I like the paint skips, nice touch
Perhaps. But earlier ones were faint, now they are better. I think it’s got something to do with the technology advancing and capability of the printers used.
@@DeanPark At the end of the long straight on the upper section near the station. The track is straight then a short, tight curve then straight again rather than a gentle transition. Probably not notable side on but looks odd when looking down the track.

Amazing attention to detail I'm sure I could 'smell' the linseed oil from the Nairns factory.
Haha. I remember that smell well. Shame the town has no smell now. In fact it’s pretty much got nothing now!
You sir are a master of your craft, the level of realism is quite astounding. You are an inspiration to us all!

Great video as usual - love the rusty fencing - will deffo be trying that out on my layout - and agree fitting that crew looked VERY stressy!
You have to be so careful with the models now, so much fine detail on them. It makes fitting a crew a challenge!

Not sure in the case of the 92.
But I have fitted their 37 drivers to my Bachmann class 37! So they are transferable.
