Just trying to create a time line for Sam being President. Lets just say that Sam was Deputy Chief of Staff for President Santos first term. But then he runs for Congress or Senate instead of sticking around for Santos' second term. So a few terms of lets say Senator before he makes a run at the Presidency. Since the Presidential elections are off kilter in TWW he runs for Presdient in the 2022 or 2026 election.
West Wing was one of my mother's all time favorite shows. She passed in 2019, and now I'm binging the show, and it's like she's watching it with me. It's one of the great iconic shows of all time, in my opinion, just like Strombo said. It will go down with the Honeymooners, All In The Family, Sopranos, etc.
I'm currently watching The West Wing for the first time.... and coincidently had just watched the episode where Sheen tells Lowe he'd make a great president too. Even before the scene Lowe's character shows Presidential Idealism... just like Sheen. I'm in awe of how smart the characters are to the point that it makes me want to rip open a history book. Some critics thought the show was unrealistically optimistic. While I thought that if the Whitehouse was not run that way.... then this show sets a great example both morally and ethically on how it should and could be run. Aaron Sorkin did all of us Americans a favor in creating it.
Loved it during the original airing, love it still. We've binge watched it on Netflix 2 or 3 times. My favorite moment is when the President dresses down the radio "doctor." The perfect look in his eyes when he says, "When the President stands, NOBODY sits..." Another is when Abby says, "Well, just stand there in your wrongness and be wrong!"
There are so many lines. Two of my favorites, "Oh, and when you're asked when I decided to kick your ass, it's when you said, 'Crime, boy I don't know'" (or something like that), and the other one is when Stockard Channing says about the body man Curtis, "I just like to watch him eat a pie" (or something like that). There are so many great lines, moments of expression, etc., but these are 2 that really stand out for me.
Love The West Wing! Watched when it first ran and I’m binging it now. Mrs. Landingham’s death always hits hard. And Leo’s heart attack! Great show that kind of predicted the Obama administration, in Matt Santos’ story: The minority dark horse candidate that becomes the Democratic front runner. He even talks about hope!
I have been a Republican all my adult life. That being said although I disagreed with some of the policies they pursued in this show I love this show. When you listen to Rob Lowe talk about how nobody has a clue what they were going through as friends/mentors/neighbors and competition to each other on the basketball court you have to think about another clip of Rob talking about how "Martin is this guy who lives 4 doors down from me so I just see him as a regular guy" and the whole other side of Martin is the one that Rob talks about is this guy that He grew up around so as much as he was "Martin Sheen, Actor as all of fandome knows him" He also was Martin Sheen, struggling father and alcoholic for a good part of the 1980s in Rob's mind. It gives you a clue how much admiration that Rob had for Martin's choices in his life that he made that Rob pursued sobriety shortly after Martin did but I also don't doubt that Rob's life was affected by Martin's struggles so to hear Rob talk about seeing himself in his 19 year old son you can imagine Rob's heart about Martin's life in a former life. It is similar I am guessing to how messed up most 19 year olds feel to watch Rob/Brad Pitt/Emilio/Demi Moore etc generation dealing with loss.
Ok I saw online on Wikipedia what it talked about was more of the reason why Rob left because I couldn't figure out what they meant when they said that Rob wasn't treated well (or Rob said that) but I realized (since I never watched the show at all) that Rob was supposed to be more of a lead character and it was more orientated as a venue for Martin Sheen to show off his acting skills. but it said like that like Rob was out acted by the talented cast and you have to wonder if maybe Sorkin/Schlamme felt like he wasn't the top of the cast talent wise and acted accordingly or did they just adjust his schedule as they focused more on Bartlett. my favorite actress in the show was Janel Moloney. Gorgeous, witty and good character acting. She played Donna the secretary aid to Josh Lyman (Whiteford).
I watched that episode that he's speaking of just last night - hell, I own the entire box series of The West Wing and I'm giving it a go-round again, as I always seem to do once a year or so!!
***** I'm on the last season now. I've gotta say, it really wasn't the same after Aaron Sorkin stopped writing for it but it still wound up to be a phenomenal series!
What I particularly love is that I actually find myself understanding it more and more with every reviewing. The pace is crazy fast (in the first 4 years) and as an engineer, I'm just not in any way attune to the bizarre world of Washington. BTW, the president doesn't hug him in that scene. But it is one of my favorites. Another BTW, I'm sorry, but many folks here are being charitable with season 5, 6, and 7. The writing and directing spanned the spectrum from "meh" to dismal. I rewatch up to the end of season 4 and say "I'm done for now", only to find myself restarting with 1-01.
Yep. Let's reboot the West Wing with Sam Seaborn as President. I think Leo's daughter Mallory should be First Lady. There was always a lot of chemistry between them and she would be great. Charlie needs to be a senior staff member and of course Josh has to be Chief of Staff with his wife Donna as a another senior staff member. Have the former President (Santos) involved in the plot somehow. It could be another incredible show. But you would have to have the same writers. The writing was really the key to the whole thing.
That might be a plot hole though (having Mallory as first lady) since in the final season it's mentioned, as Rob comes on to the Santos admin, that he is engaged to an attorney.
to be fair, as part of the series they did win two Peabody Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, including best dramatic series at the Emmys four years running.
Rob Lowe portrayed Sam, the bumbling genius, perfectly and really made the character likable. He was my favorite character although all of them were marvelous. A true ensemble cast who played off each other so well. Needless to say, none of this happens without the brilliant writing of Aaron Sorkin, but the cast brought his words to life.
I think he meant Rob Lowe as a child lived through his mum getting divorced twice - divorce affects kids as well as parents and shapes their ideas of marriage - which is why Rob then commented on how strong Sheen's marriage is
What luck for Rob Lowe to leave Dayton, Ohio, for California, and be so close to Martin Sheen, who was born in Dayton. I am sure that alone bonded them from the beginning.
WW was brought to my attention by my mother’s high praises. Usually that didno happen, our TV watching didno coincide much. Verr happy to have listened to her this time. Once started I was as deeply smitten as she. While the show was still in production, there was an interview with a real life teacher who described WW as “America’s civics class”. This one is verr sure of that truth. Despite having a strong liberal slant, some opposing views were presented, in particular the episode wherr 2 Supreme Court positions opened up and they nominated one from each wing of the political spectrum. Glenn Close was the liberal, William Fitch was the conservative. Listening to the friendly argument between both candidares was one of the first times it dawned on me the othar side of the aisle had legitimate arguments. Anothar instants was when Ainsley Hayes reversed Sam’s position - and THEN convinced him to turn around. Uttarly unrealistic, I know; but by Jupitar, that’s the way it SHOULD be. To this day, I come across Youtoob vids of moment from the show, like this one, and becomb enraptured all ovar again.
Since Martin Sheen played the VP in American President, it was only natural he was selected to do the TV series. In fact Sorkin selected Martin Sheen and they together decided to extend offer to Rob Lowe.
Martin Sheen wasn't VP in 'American President'. He was Chief of Staff … Leo McGarry {John Spencer} role. I don't remember who played 'American President' VP.
Sidney Portier would have been a great choice, as well. Very talented actor. But I can't imagine him in the role... or at least, the role would have developed so much differently than it did with Sheen.
I would absolutely love to see a sequel to the West Wing with Rob Lowe as president. Sadly, it seems he and the producers did not end things in the most positive terms, so I doubt that would ever happen. Also, we do live in very cynical times, so probably a TV show with such a positive spirit would be considered silly and boring.
Sidney Poitier would have made it too much Liberal fiction and wet dream. There has yet to be a Black candidate on either party, yet, let alone one winning. You might as well rewrite All In The Family with Mike’s dream of Eldridge Cleaver being President instead of Richard M. Nixon.
I always thought Charlie was the son he never had, and that was especially brought home in the episode when he gives Charlie the Paul Revere knife that had been passed down for hundreds of years from fathers to sons in Bartlet's family. ruclips.net/video/LQlUVfz_qbg/видео.html
Sidney Poitier would've been great on The West Wing, but I think if he was the pres the character would've remained a smaller character like originally planned.

@AnneLiesveld I read that and it sounds kind of like I didn't intend it to sound. I just mean I keep hearing RL talk about Bartlett (aka Martin Sheen) meant the world to him and I just wonder if RL felt like/feels like MS = a professional level He can't attain or maybe hasn't yet.
@Deadmansparty2002 I have to say I agree with your comment. To think about living 3 houses apart from THOSE people is just cool. Plus, I just think when I think about someone as big and as famous as this actor guy I guess I just realize (when I watch clips about him talking about living at their house during Christmas) that they are people just like you and I are.
George wasn't speaking clearly but I thought he said something about 2 divorces. It sounded like he said you went through two divorces but I know it was his mom that went through that. Pretty rare that a "hollywood" marraige stays rock solid and the "real world" marraige keeps ending after try after try after try.
@WorldPeace21 I thought I read that he was given less hours because they changed tunes, but I wonder if RL attitude was a cover (on west wing) for his feeling shy and not comfortable admitting that he felt embaressed that MS was "all that" and he (RL) wasn't!
I don't think that President Bartlet ever hugged anyone besides his family, or Charlie. President Bartlet always surrounded himself with a reverence of his position that did not lend itself to public displays of affection for anyone besides his family.
I read your comment again and I thought about something that I wish I could ask Rob Lowe. Maybe this sounds stupid but in 1977 when he was 14 years old did he have any clue who Martin Sheen was enough to recognize him before he moved to hollywood? It seems odd to me that he talks about MS being famous for this and that. I must not recognize how famous he was in his 30's and early 40s as far as celebrity dome is concerned. must be something like how famous most male actors that age were.
@AnneLiesveld Supposedly the real one gets closer to mid 200 thousands which still looks like $ but when you realize that is like a day of work for bartlett it is like THAT CANT BE TRUE!
Sir. After. Conning Ham. John Barry or John Barrie? "Barry" Sidney Poitier? Wow. RIP. Would he Poitier have accepted it though? It wasn't intended to be an extensive part was it? The President character. And definitely not two terms POTUS 44. My oath onnit. Check POTUS 44's pulse again. That had to evoke a chuckle.
TWW was originally meant to be a Rob Lowe vehicle focusing on the staff around the President. Martin Sheen rocked up as Jed Bartlet and the character was given a lot more screen time.
Rob Lowe if after D.Trump second term, you ran for President, you would get my vote. An actor running for President is not unheard of, Ronnie Regan did it and I voted for him
Oooooh. So that's why all the staff was white before Charlie came on to put in diversity. Because they thought they were gonna get Sydney Poitier for the president.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (Admiral Percy Fitzwallace) was a pretty sizable regular on the show as well. Hardly Charlie as the "token black guy", and Fitzwallace was on the show before Charlie.
I loved Sam Seaborn, but it's hard to look past the fact that it was Rob Lowe who essentially destroyed the West Wing. He chased Aaron Sorkin from the show and then abandoned it himself... leaving us with the mediocre dross that was the last three seasons.
I was under the impression that Sorkin was let go due to always falling behind on getting scripts written. How did Rob Lowe run Sorking from the show? I also heard Rob expected to be the star, which meant more money, couldn't handle the reality of the amazing ensemble cast chemistry, demanded his own thing and was let go for not being a team player.
I believe it was a combination of things. Time and budget was definitely an issue, but so were tensions between Sorkin and Lowe. John Wells gives a great description here: ruclips.net/video/RqbiRdd67d8/видео.html
J T Edson. Ole Devil Hardin. Played I was told in 2 TV movies by Martin Sheen. Rage rage against the dying of all of us of the rather lighter hearted. I have yet to hear a good old fashion belly laugh from POTUS 45. GEORGE see Scot under a table in PATTON discussing how to gain air superiority against the country bombing then Great Britain. Nothing, the Donald? Not even an Eversmile for your New Jerseyians?
It would seem that someone seeking answers on any topic need only go to Rob Lowe. This privileged person is a seeming expert on poverty, romance, marriage, acting, finances, psychology, politics --and most of all, himself, his movies, his book, his popularity--and, of course, his charm and good looks. Yawn.

I would have to disagree with that first question. The most natural father-son dynamic was between Bartlett and Charlie.
Emily Proctor / Rob Lowe
two talents - aging like fine scotch
Sydney potier would have been great.
Three Yea to Sam Seabourn..
Never knew about Alison Janey!
CJ Cregg 2024!

Very nice.
@AnneLiesveld Supposedly the real one gets closer to mid 200 thousands which still looks like $ but when you realize that is like a day of work for bartlett it is like THAT CANT BE TRUE!
i'm sorry i can not speak english what he says please?
@AnneLiesveld minus the millions of dollars in $ for pay every week and the mcmansion house.
Not really. Look at how many Presidents came from OH.
@AnneLiesveld Yeah, I wasn't lucky enough to have lived near people like that. If I did, I don't know about it. :)
Sadly the flip side was he also wanted prominence above the crew because of that relationship. Sad
Sir. After. Conning Ham. John Barry or John Barrie? "Barry"
Sidney Poitier? Wow. RIP. Would he Poitier have accepted it though? It wasn't intended to be an extensive part was it? The President character. And definitely not two terms POTUS 44. My oath onnit. Check POTUS 44's pulse again. That had to evoke a chuckle.
He was also a great choice because Martin sheen had already played president Kennedy.
@AnneLiesveld does for one eppy!
@AnneLiesveld I know what you mean, though that's not gonna keep me from trying to make millions with my work. :)
He's the reason Aaron Sorkin quit... and wanted his name first on the intro... greed.
i thought sorkin quit due to drug abuse
TWW was originally meant to be a Rob Lowe vehicle focusing on the staff around the President. Martin Sheen rocked up as Jed Bartlet and the character was given a lot more screen time.
@@tanveerhasan2382 someone from Hollywood DRUGS.... God No.
spray tan ?!!
Rob Lowe if after D.Trump second term, you ran for President, you would get my vote. An actor running for President is not unheard of, Ronnie Regan did it and I voted for him
@Deadmansparty2002 LOL! Oh yea I could handle the bazillions of dollars no doubt about it but as long as I am making income I am good to go.
Rob Lowe 2024? If we're looking for a TV star as President we could do (have done) a lot worse...
You guys are so all good cups I love you
Rob made a HUGE mistake leaving that show over money and not getting enough of the focus.
Both Rob and Martin are from Ohio. What are the odds?
Both from Dayton!
i only clicked to see if he'd say 'literally'. disappointed!
This guy was called rob slow on set.
slow ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK.
I like Marty as an actor, but not his lefty politics.
If only Democrats were actually like Josiah Bartlett instead of Joe Biden.....🤦♂️
Joe is a great man too
plastic surgery you can tell by his lower jaw...he dose age
Rob Lowe is an awful Trump supporter who stole his entire bit from Aaron Sorkin’s one note writing. Love the show but I have no time for this guy
It would seem that someone seeking answers on any topic need only go to Rob Lowe. This privileged person is a seeming expert on poverty, romance, marriage, acting, finances, psychology, politics --and most of all, himself, his movies, his book, his popularity--and, of course, his charm and good looks. Yawn.
Rob Lowe delivered his West Wing lines in robot like fashion...without much emotion...below average actor
think there was the script and director who told him what to say, do, and act. Just for your information, he was what they wanted....
I may add..on the subject of Rob Lowe...he comes across as BLAND on his recent West Wing interviews...in my opinion...actor without SUBSTANCE...
You guys those fame dude father shit the CROWN SCARFACE'S THROW DOWN MY DADS BUDGETS NORTH CAPS ISLAND'S ETC 💪 HE IS THE MAN I WAITED FOR CALLED DIGINITY ON YOUR SOIL CONFIDENCE.
