This video was below your usual standard because it appears to use history to justify China’s current actions and glosses over the vast amount of pollution created by the production in China that completely undermines the green economy goals of the customers.

@@stupidburp China makes pollution at HALF the *per capita* rate that USA makes. When you're accusing China that they "pollute more" even though their rate is much lower than yours, you're essentially saying that you don't like the fact that there are too many Chinese in the world... Which is pretty racist if you didn't notice.
And what could they possibly do that results in "so much" pollution? Ever heard of "Made in China"?! They're making stuff *for us!* We are deindustrializing and they're industrialized and make the stuff we want so of course that results in pollution that we were supposed to have instead.
Redevelop your Industry if you want China to pollute less. But then you'll pollute more and suddenly you won't care about pollution or climate change anymore.
Metals are not the same as opium - opium is burned while producing 0 benefits, and creates sideffects, meanwhile lithium etc. are not burned, and stay in Europe and can be recicled forever while creating massive economic and health benefits. Gass and oil are much more like the opium ;)
I was thinking the same thing. Once a solar panel is installed, it’s likely to stay so for about 20 years and be an energy producing and financial asset.

If China wants to ban exports of key raw materials, it is the Chinese rare earth material holders that will be left holding the bag with no one left to sell to. This political weapon is clearly a double edged sword.
We could open mines as well, we just prefer the cheaper products subsidised with Chinese tax money.
@@siemdecleyn3198 no we don't. the difference is that we have environmental land occupational laws and regulations to prevent companies from destroying our land, poisoning us, and abusing their employees. China has barely none of that in comparison, so they can do it all much more cheaply and quicker... at the expense of all listed above, as they control their media and hide all of that and suppress anyone that complains.

To achieve "green energy Europe" or whatever, demand is very high in terms of electronic and mechanical parts, as well as resources. What countries in Europe have all of that to fill demand? Russia? Ukraine? Well they at war and under sanctions now, thanks to US and NATO led by US. European internal disputes are here because EU is still too dependant on Uncle Sams pipi. Instead of giving money to develop facilities to create all the mentioned parts that could help with green deal and energy infrastructure development...they now have to send money to keep bleeding Ukraine in war caused by US and NATO expansion.... US was good in early cold war for rebuilding EU after ww2, when US still actually produced something useful for civil world. Now they only produce bombs and big macs. China on the other hand produces what EU needs, and is willing to sell, but US rose taxes on Chinas export via see routes controlled by US, so their businesses are stagnating and now selling for higher price...
To be frank, it all seems complicated to me for no reason. I really do not know how all this shit should be properly sorted out. But everyone has seen in past 5 years that EU does not do shit on its own, even tho it could and should have been doing....EU internal disputes on LGBT and migrant rights - all while wars keep popping up and trade routes being closed and squeezed. I have no problem going to work from Serbia to Germany, to pull and connect cables. But I do have to scratch my head when thinking how a box of screws doesn't have "made in EU" instead of "made in China'...its laughable.

Last video from him I watched had bunch of stuff about Finland and what he was saying was like straight out of the mouth of Medvedev. I listened to it all to hear if he would provide anything from Finnish perspective and there was nothing. If I want to hear that sort of stuff, I'll just listen to it straight from the Russians like I have been doing my entire life.

I'm not sure where you were going with your opium/EV sales comparison, or what drugs even have to do with car sales. What happened back then was tragic, but cars aren't drugs, and simply don't negatively effect you like drugs do IMO. I can see the monetary wealth drain & that has to stop ASAP.
It’s about resource independence not green energy.
Let’s get the picture right. Europe wants to be strong like America. But it can’t when it imports all of its energy demands. It cannot support its population without immigration. It cannot sustain a war against Russia without the United States.
That is why the green energy plan exists.

We need a massive effort to shift to a low carbon economy. The problem is not that China has been leading efforts, but rather that the EU has not upped its game.

Fascinating analysis, very well described. The only thing that I see: Green energy is not opium, it is not self-destructive. I think if China can transform itself with their technology they will be able to outclass every other country due to extremely low energy costs, which will give them an edge in production that europe cannot cope with.
I'm a scientist, a chemist, and with many collogues could not find a proper job to put my education to use, while China did focus on research and development. I think Europe, especially Germany where I lived for long time wasted at least 20 years here, and will have to pay the price for it, although it is good to see them trying to catch up. Once the green energy network is set up, maintaining it is simpler, and should be doable domestically without being addicted to China, as green energy generation does not put much strain on the facilities due the mild temperatures and conditions compared to combustion or nuclear power. So the only problem I see is corrosion, and here using long-term materials especially for windmills will lead towards a stronger independence.
Because the result of a green transformation will be more or less energy independence if the country manages to generate the industry to maintain the green energy production facilities on its own which I do not consider so difficult. Big Plus: you do need need ANY fuel, you use what is there anyway.
But the comparison is a bit off. Opium crippled the Chinese economy, while cheap solar panels and EVs would certainly support the European industry.

Europe does need to move out quickly on this transition but comparisons with the Opium wars are hyperbole. Opium is addictive and destructive, and requires regular purchases to feed an addiction. Selling me solar panels and batteries is, in Marxist terms, selling me the means of production. Solar panels last for more than 50 years and car lithium batteries are warrantied to hold 80% of their original charge after 8 years, after which many are being used for grid storage for years after, and then they can be 100% recycled. I also highly doubt the Chinese had the foresight to deliberately plan to ensnare the Europeans like this. China has its own reasons to go green as quickly as possible. Look at all of the places in the world that net export oil and petroleum products and draw a line from there to China. Only Russia shares an adjacent border, but the vast majority of the oil production is on the European side and they have been arguing for years who should build a pipeline across some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet across 5 time zones to shift to China. Otherwise almost all of the rest of it passes past India and through the strait of malacca to reach them.
China sees democratic nations such as those on our continent to be "inefficient", "sides that bicker all the time" etc.
China is an authoritarian state, it does not see it's neighbours as equals, nor their african partners that they have indebted themselves to china, no, china sees these as pawns on a chessboard to be used against nations that do not align with china's worldview.
I totally agree with this comment. Comparisons with the opium wars and colonialism are way out of touch with reality. Chinese are as captive in selling us as we are in buying from them. Arguably their position is worse, since we can easily ditch them. Solar panels are not crazy difficult to produce, if need ever arises to reshore that, and it's European R&D at the forefront of solar cells anyway.
Also the sooner (and cheaper) we Europeans become energy independent, the better. At this moment solar is already cheaper than burning coal/oil/gas for electricity production, and being green is just a plus.
I agree with the video in the good move the Chinese made with the rare earth elements, and also all the unfair industrial subsidies and the bending of the WTO rules they have been doing for decades now. More should be done about that here in Europe.
Is EU losing its pv and wind turbine manufacturing industry to China?
Yes but considering:
1. Installing renewable energy production reduces the reliance on oil and gas import from Russia and Middle East. So on this argument, it is money spent on China to keep money away from Russia and saving money in the long run.
2. Pv and wind turbines are physically installed in EU. EU can nationalise them anytime when relations go hot.
3. Installation and service create far more job than manufacturing does. So without China output, EU will lose more job in net total.
4. Even if EU wants to produce pv and turbines inside the EU, EU is not blessed with the rare earth elements in its border. Therefore, EU would rely on Chinese suppliers anyway.
5. Pv and wind turbine know-how is not that high unlike in automotive, aerospace. So China with their planned economy style, they would dominate this industry eventually. What would be the cost of subsidising this industry in the EU? When they controls both the raw materials and has better competitive advantage?
That is my view on energy policy with China. But this does not apply for EV automotive which I think China is really brizkriging the EU. EU played right into their hands.

For regions like Hong Kong that do not produce EVs, we are delighted to import what are known as overcapacity EVs.
As for those regions producing EVs, you have two options: either increase your productivity or raise tariffs to protect your auto industry in the short term. However, in the long run, good luck to you.
The parallel to China's century of humiliation is interesting but comparing opium with industrial goods and services that will (hopefully) eventually save our species is disingenuous. The EU has plenty of advantages that China never would have.
The U.S. was once the world leader in solar panel manufacturing and just decided to completely give up on the edge it had over the rest of the world.
So also Germany. Conservatism and fossil fuel lobby destroy our countries.
I think overwhelming lobbying and production of fossil fuels had something to do with that. Even if we went full speed ahead it was going to be cheaper in China.

Yea that's not what happened. China just MASSIVELY subsidizes its industries and no one can compete against that. China's labor isn't even cheap anymore. It's straight up government subsidies and they try to dump product on the rest of the world.
The question is simple: Does EU wants cheaper and cleaner energy to boost its economy and improve the European people's living standard?

I think one of the ways to save EU industry is to rellocate 80% - 90% of all industrial production capacities in countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, etc. All these countries have a perfect combination of factors like high levels of corruption and a large pool of low skilled labour which would give western european companies a competitive advantage when it comes to the cost of labour and production and enable western european companies to focus on R&D and high value added manufacturing.
But then they will be developed and the ideological conflicts between West and East Europe would intensify. More Eastern European countries would look for themselves like Hungary, Slovakia, Poland etc. and the EU won't be able to apply pressure if they don't have all the "values" of Bruxelless has to offer.
You need to keep everyone poor except yourself, let China produce for you and then blame them for having pollution because they make the stuff you want. Isn't that genius? Someone should give the ones who came up with this plan a pat on the back!

I haven't watched the full video, but I think its cool that this came out a few days after Just Have A Think made a video about China's rapid renewables expansion.
China promotes propaganda about their fake efforts to support a green economy. China’s version of green is to paint fake vegetation green to fool imagery from satellites.

Think of ways to extract your own minerals so as not the be over reliance to China for rare earth materials manufacturing ion batteries, wind turbines, photovoltic panels for your electricity consumptions...be competitive again in this Industries.♥️

What makes a country rich? Trades. Yes, buying and selling. Well, preferably more selling than buying, that is how you get a trade surplus.
For a country to sell more, you need (1). the goods people want to buy, (2). Your goods are affordable, (3). You need good foreign relationship, and (4). You have a monopoly on the goods you are selling.
China was dominate during the days when the Silk Road threaded along many countries and continents. It has #1,#2, #3 and especially #4....monopoly. China would not allow silk worms to be exported, and was punishable by death if anyone was caught doing it. But that monopoly was broken when an Italian monk stole some silk worms and bred them in Europe.
Before the monopoly was broken, China became rich and powerful because influential people wanted silk garments to show off their wealth. Then another commodity also brought China wealth...tea. But that was actually a curse for China because the British Empire couldn't pay for the tea consumed, and paid for it in opium. That was the downfall of China...the Opium War !!!
But the modern day China is doing well in trades albeit without #4...monopoly. It has #1,. #2 and #3. China, being an industrious nation, is manufacturing and selling stuffs people want to buy, and are "budget friendly". In regard to "budget friendly", some would call it "CHEAP", with a tone of dismissive, jealousy, and possibly racist overtone because Chinese people can't make high quality stuff.
Being "budget friendly", China manages to sell stuffs by ship loads. That draws weasel words such as "overcapacity" from the US, as well as from Europe. Interpretation: They cannot compete with China !
US;s good time has come and passed. The dominance of US cars brought wealth and even pop music to Americans. I dare say that the US also wasted a lot of resources desperately to maintain a facade of being the #1. Well, some would call it #1 bully, depending on which side of the fence you are on. Weapon industry would bring wealth, but not everyone wants a rocket launcher or a machine gun, like Americans !!!

I think it's kind of ironic. Ten years ago and more, most people I spoke with on the CCP's efforts make their apparent global effort to dominate major industries (and military of course) said I was being overly dramatic and why can't I just be happy for China (the communists)....
The plan was to give Western companies a boost by promoting new technology that other, less developed parts of the world won't be able to keep up. But it turned up that China managed to make use of know-how transfer and having cheap energy- not restricting (in fact increasing) fossil fuels use and using renewable sources only where it is cost-effective, completely dominated this industry. America first recognised the danger and under Trump started to withdraw from green policies, but Europe only now starts to see how bad the situation is. If Europe won't withdraw from these green deals and other pseudoecological policies, all European heavy industry, especially automotive will get destroyed, and the rest bought up by Chinese. I am afraid Europe sank so deep in its own pseudoecological propaganda it won't be able to save itself.
Its the right path. But we destroyed our domestic industrie trough popolism. (2011 Germany) Green Energy will dominate the future, but with far right politics we will stop in this field completly and china will dominate us in like 5 years because of their dirt cheap EVs and Solar Systems
Green energy is essential because every developed society demands clean air in its cities. Burning fossil fuels has a hidden cost in polluted air and respiratory disease. Its like a factory dumping rubbish into the forest or sewage into a river. What Europe should do is build its own green energy factories and impose tariffs on Chinese goods. Lithium can be replaced with sodium. These batteries have 10-15% less storage capacity, but they are independent of resources as sodium is everywhere (common salt is sodium chloride) and for usage as stationary batteries the extra weight and maybe space does not matter. Lithium makes sense for portable or moving energy sources.
Aqueous batteries just hit 1200Wh/L which is roughly one kilowatt hour per kg. With WATER.
Sodium ion batteries are guaranteed 12 years, 1.5M km by CATL now.
Lithium just doesn't matter. And all the rare earths are recyclable and have substitutes now. Even solar panels can be made with chlorophyll.

Biggest problem with Hydrogen is storage. Hydrogen has a weird and detrimental effect on any storage container used for its storage. Due to being the element of the smallest atomic size, it can pass through any material at a steady pace (effusion), losing all that hydrogen over time. That effect is worse with metal tanks because hydrogen is very reactive, forming brittle metal hydrides that can lead to catastrophic failures...

America is being a bit silly here. There is no such thing as "over production" of solar panels. The world currently can't have too many solar panels. If governments don't want China to produce the most solar panels then they will need to offer their own subsidies.

Production of solar panels in China produces huge amounts of pollution both in their industrial processes and in their use of coal to produce electricity to power their industries. This creates more pollution as more renewable equipment is produced. Buy renewable equipment from other countries that are polluting less and are operating more responsibly.
There is also the awkward point that much of the production in China is by forced labor by ethnic and religious groups that are being subjected to oppression and genocide. Solar panels in particular are largely produced in Xinjiang by Uighurs that are rotated through concentration camps “reeducation centers” while their families are r aped by C C party members placed in their homes to breed them out. Those that resist are imprisoned and have their organs stolen. This horror is enabled by the money made from exports.

Sure. Let the Chinese subsidize and over produce these cars and gadgets. Unfortunately, for them if they can’t get access to sell in western markets their companies are essentially being placed in a welfare status by the CCP. It’s their choice to subsidize/over produce and is ours to deny them access to our markets to sell. However, they could recoup some of the cost by selling to Africa and South America but those markets are limited in their purchasing power.
The CCP isn't even competent in how it subsidizes, it's far too corrupt. Just look at what happened with EVs, China had dozens of companies pop up that got paid for every car they produced and sold; so these companies made a bunch of crap cars that don't work and then sold them to relatives for less than they got from the subsidies. These cars (when not bursting into flames) have been left to rot in parking lots.
Like most things in China (their housing bubble for instance) it's just making shit to look good. They're throwing money into a pit and setting it on fire hoping to accomplish something.

We need to do the same as China. Give our companies in these new technologies heavy subsidies, to make them competetive and help them grow, or at least survive against China. We especially need to protect our wind industry, since that is something where we have been doing well, we have several big companies that are now in danger. Letting them fall would be a fatal mistake. Getting into a subsidy war in China is not really a problem, because we want to be supporting the deployment of green technologies anyway, making them cheaper through subsidies fulfills that goal. What we should stop doing is subsidising purchas of these technologies like batteries, PV panels, EVs etc, if they are imported from China. Just like with the US IRA, only EU made products should qualify for such subsidies.

Reverse colonialism via globalization will continue due to the benefits for both sides. Other countries will need to learn the lessons of currency devaluation until they can build up their own domestic knowledge base and switch to consumer based economies.
As far as reindustrializing Europe or the USA, inflation, protectionism and subsidies will not be sustainable, however automation may very well work with AI driven technology. What the world will look like after substantial automation is perhaps too speculative at this time.

However, I digress to agree with the notion that things like solar panels and wind turbines are comparable with opium. Unlike opium, even imported items like these would become energy producing and financial assets for up to two decades. China can neither block the sun or turn off the wind.
Having said that, I do agree with the overall issue and the fact that China, a WTO member, is using unfair practices.
To solve this, Europe will have to take decisive action to secure its raw materials supply. Strong trade agreements with and EU invest in countries like Australia and Chile could be a solution offering long-term non-Chinese supplies to the continent.
EV car imports from China should be banned as soon as the raw materials have been secured.
And this needs to happen ASAP.
I wouldn't go as far as calling Chinese practices unfair. They were first to invest, the executed long term strategy, they are poised to reap the benefits. Unsustainable (for Europe) they are but unfair? Germany is planning how to pump $200B into its own renewable industry. US is doing the same. It's unfair to some startups who thought that energy business is like any other but that's nothing new.
