  • This is a short video showing how to remove and replace the steering coupler from a Mercedes R107 and W113 from inside the car.
This method does not entail disconnecting the track rod end tie rod ends Having the car up on a ramp. You do have to remove the bolts which hold the steering box to the side of the car.
It is incredibly easy to miss align the steering wheel to the steering box splines. Before you remove the coupler from the steering box you need to mark exactly which spline it came off or ideally use the special Mercedes locking bolt. This bolt goes into the steering box and locks the steering in the forward position.

Hi Mike. Great video. My 107SL has always had sloppy steering. I figured I would put a new box on it in the future. However, your video prompted me to look at my bushing. My bushing has the same amount of play as your pagoda did. Can’t wait to put a new one in. Thanks!

Thanks for your comment. The red 280SL I'm working on is a 1975 and I'll probably do a video on the bosch d jetronic when I come to try and get that car running. Mike

Hi Mike, good detailed video. I have a 1973 R107 450SL. My steering is also making the clicking noise when moving the steering wheel. Do you know where can I purchase the steering box alignment pin. I've search all over the internet and haven't been able to find the tool...Thanks

Hi - I’m not sure where you can get the steering box alignment pin. I suspect that some garages/people might make their own. Maybe ping Pierre Hedary a message or the SL Shop? Mike

Hi John - I trust you are well? What kind of alloys does your merc have? A friend of mine needs to borrow a set of flat face alloys for a film shoot on Monday. If you get this in time, maybe you could txt me a picture of your car showing the wheels? Mike in Bristol

@@MikesMercsandothercars Hi Mike, I’m sorry I missed this. Been training in the Black Forest….. Which involves a lot of alcohol.
      I guess I’m too late.
