  • Consumer Reports rates Bosch as the best dishwasher- but the user reviews are terrible. Why? What is the real story? Our old dishwasher recently broke and we decided to go with a new Bosch. Here are the results of loading it up and the first wash. And here are the specs at Amazon- tinyurl.com/Amazon-Bosch

I have owned a Bosch dishwasher since 2002 and love it! My main complaint is that it is so quiet you don't know its running and you can end up opening it mid-cycle. (everyone in the house has done it at least once) As is suggested in the manual, if you are not intending to unload the washer right after it finishes just leave the door slightly ajar and everything will dry. This works, I am able to unload even plastic wear without a drop of water on them. BTW, bacteria is killed in hot water so that really shouldn't be an issue and leaving the door slightly ajar really doesn't take that much effort.

I like this guys video/review because he takes the normal aproach of plug and play. This explains why consumer reports gives it 5 stars and people give it 2.5 stars. Consumer reports does it by directions we wing it.
I have one and I tell you it takes some work to make it perfect. But the quietness, looks and energy savings are worth it! If you want your dishes totally dry you need to use a rinse aid and if you can crack the door when done. And for you that think it will build bacteria, relax it raises the water temp to 160+ killing all. Again all of this info is in the directions that none of us read.
If you are lazy buy something else. If you like quality German engineering like the BMW or Benz in the garage a Bosch is your dishwasher of choice.

You don't need rinse aid. Perhaps you think you need it if you get spots on your dishes and water is very hard in your area. You can use hydrogen peroxide. It's much cheaper. Rinse Aid has a bunch of nasty petrochemicals in it. Try looking on Jet Dry's website and find what's in their product. You won't be able to find out this information. They don't want to tell you. Gee, I wonder why that is.

I have a Bosch dishwasher and I believe they are the best. Our one gets insane amounts of punishment due to having a large family. Normally on 'auto' mode, these machines have fiber optic sensors which detect how dirty the water is, then selects a suitable temperature. After having used our Bosch for about 4 years, it has never failed. Dishes are still spotless, no problems. Also, I'm based in Europe (UK) and we can still use rinse aid. I use Finish stuff :) Nice video.

The problem I have found is that on the rotating arms which spins and spray water, sometimes small items of food (eg rice grains) can get stuck in the holes and stop it spraying the dishes fully. You can remove the arms by unscrewing (top one and bottom one) and tap them on the sink to clear these scraps if this happens.

  • @Le_Sourpuss

Hi! The dishes will come out dry if you open the machine right after it finishes and if you wait about half an hour with the door open so the hot water will evaporate ;) It works every time for me. It is also advisable, as soon as you open the door, to turn anything that has accumulated water upside down and back up or it will obviously not evaporate properly.

Excellent review! I just bought the Bosch 300 and am trying it out now. I haven't seen how well it dries yet, but after just having bought another energy efficient appliance( Kenmore Washer) and being told by the salesperson to keep the door open after doing a load to help dry out the excess water from around the door seal and inside, it makes sense after using an energy efficient dishwasher that you should just leave the door open after the end of the cycle to make sure that the dishwasher airs out also.

On the wet tub walls, Bosch uploaded a video that says it's designed to have the water condense on the tub to draw it away from the dishes. Maybe the rinse aid would help the water run off the walls as well?
Ask Manfred - "How does condensation drying work?"

I want to write a follow up review. After having this dishwasher for about 3 months now we love it!! We learned after much research and talking to Bosch experts to use only 1 tablespoon of powder not liquid or disc dish washing products. This made a BIG difference. Also make sure you always have enough jet dry and alwAys press the Sanitize button when doing a wAsh. The dishes are sparkling and now hot and dry. Can't believe the difference in using a very small amt of powder vs those prefilled cascade discs.

I like small amount of the liquid, lately I tried Costco's Kirkland brand, 1/3 the pocket?....and was happy with results, do not rinse dishes unless egg or grease...using auto sense.... I always use liquid since the disks? ruined the look of the tubs both of my Mom's kitchenaid and whatever brand I used to have.

I purchased a Bosch a year ago. It cleaned very well & was whisper quiet. In fact, sometimes you couldn't even tell it was running it was that quiet. However, most of my dishes were wet when I went to put them away even though Consumer Reports rates some models good at drying. The European condensation drying system I was informed. Then, the interior of my dishwasher started to smell. Bosch models do not have a self-cleaning filter so I started removing it/washing it out every other load but it was virtually impossible to get all of the particles out of the fine mesh filter and the smell kept up...the inside smelled like a garbage can. I finally figured I'd learned an expensive lesson & replaced it with a Kitchen Aid with "Pro Dry" & a self-cleaning filter. Quiet. No smell. Dishes dry as a bone. Very happy.

Oivey2000 all it takes is a few lemon seeds to jam the impeller and a Bosch won't drain properly.
It will complete timed cycle without draining and running a rinse cycle.

My dishwasher was actually doing the same thing and the more I read about it the more I found you really need to use a rinse aide! Tried it today and the dishes were noticeably dryer. I was hesitant on using it but have been told with today's dishwashers it is almost a must. Also depends on the detergent that is used too. I use cascade platinum which does a wonderful job. After many many decisions and searching and reviews I found that for the money and quality the LG came in first for me. Thank you so much for your video and for people who were saying to use vinegar as a rinse aide not good to put into the place where the rinse aide would go as it will damage your machine. It is phosphates that were banned not the rinse aids. I was so hesitant as I believe it leaves something on the dishes and could get you sick. There are now safer brands that use all natural ingredients. I used cascade today and it totally worked, everything was totally dry. My dishwasher is only 3 days old. I did 3 loads so far, 2 with that had a lot of water left on my dishes and the one with the cascade or jet dry, dishes dry. I am going to try the Seventh Generation Rinse Aid Free and Clear to see if I get the same results

So, here in the UK Rinse Aid in all it's brands is readily available and not banned! Rinse aid doesn't just aid drying, glassware comes out clear and you will notice that everything smells better, yes, crockery will often have a smell residue when rinse aid isn't used and it's not pleasant..

I like your videos! You are common sense which is exactly the approach that I take. I have a Bosh and have found the reason for wet dishes is because dish rinse agent is not used. So.. what to do? Use vinegar in the rinse dispenser. Honest it works both for spot removal and the shots.

we have the 44 Plus dBA. first of all it is smaller than our old whirlpool. It is much quieter yes but not quicker. Maybe longer! We've had this for maybe 4 months and still are finding quirks. Yesterday I had a plastic container slightly over the indentation on the upper tray in the front and the dish detergent tablets got caught and didn't flow. We had to run it again. We quickly found we couldn't use liquid detergent. The door is still stained from that. Why is that? Does that mean no water hits the door? We love the 3rd rack but this isn't the only brand that has one. We did also find we really like the Finish tablets........

After 7 1/2 years with our model shx68t55uc/02 we just finally had to replace the hinge cords (plastic parts broke). Oddly all these things happened within the last 30 days. The latch and sensor failed as the sensor was telling the panel that the door isn't closed. The hinge cords/springs broke and the door just fell freely. The hinge kit runs about $25-35 and the latch assembly will run about $25 on Amazon. Lastly the soap dispenser door has an inner liner that also separated ($13 new door, Krazy glue didn't work). I did all my own repairs, those were easy.

Read the Bosch Instructions! Unfortunately my wife rarely does but in this case they are very clear, and in particular that water condensation on the metal surfaces of the interior is a design feature and not a defect of any kind. Evaporated water from the dishes is effectively condensed on all of the cooler outer metal surfaces to save energy, aid ECO drying and without the need for a big heating element to achieve the same result. Also, with Bosch, rinse aid and salt are NOT always necessary, especially in soft water areas AND if using Finish 5-in-1 or Quantum multi function tablets, these produce excellent results without either salt or rinse-aid, as these are built-in to the makeup of the dishwasher tablet. The Bosch Instructions I got with the machine are very clear on how to load the machine and how to set the machine for water hardness to determine how much, if any, salt and rinse aid to use in a wash cycle. I'm fortunate that Scottish water is the softest level -00 for the machine but the instructions are very clear at what levels additional salt and rinse aid will be required and also, clearly state how to set the machine default salt and rinse aid levels for any tap water type from your utility company area.

There is a 60 min cycle available on most models.
The Advanta? series is their cheap line. You get what you pay for.
They tell you to use a rinse agent if you want dry dishes. If you don't they'll be wetter.
They have a feature many don't. It will shut off water if it detects a leak! and retain the leak in a tub built in to the unit. I have had a nearly new Whirlpool unit leak behind the counter and seem under floors unseen and it did $12,000 of damage.

My dishwasher installer told me not to use the "eco" programs regularly, but to use the full heat programs. He said that without the full heat, you will not dissolve all the fats, they will accumulate on the inner pipes of the dishwasher, and they will rot/rust prematurely requiring a new dishwasher.
Leaving the door shut after the wash is finished allows the residual heat to evaporate more water from articles that have pools for water when upside down.
The real test of a dishwasher is can it remove avocado because avocado is alkaline like the detergent itself.

Nice to see European type dishwashers making it over to the US, I have a high end Bosch dishwasher with heat exchanger we got in 98.
It has a couple more programs one being a quick wash (not suitable for cleaning food, only delph and cuttlery) which is about 36m and has option of enhanced drying, on final drain it generates steam from a tiny amount of water & adds a further 3m.
6 Y in had a minor fault on the pcb (Siemens) the engineer gave me the original which I fixed, so I have spare.

I have one of these and when I first took delivery I complained under the warranty about dishes coming out wet. I thought it must be faulty. The engineer said this was because it needed rinse aid which gives a final sloosh and helps it dry. He said it needed this even if the detergent tablets claimed to contain rinse aid. This does work and no it is not banned in Europe. Rinse Aid is widely available here.

Before buying a new Bosch, I would want to make sure that they have fixed the problem with the heater relay and its solder joints. See the repair video at Bosch Dishwasher Heater Relay Repair Part 1
We were very happy with our Bosch, but at 5 years of age, the heater relay failed, with a burned solder joint. We checked online (just Google "Bosh dishwasher stops at 1 minute") and found that many other Bosch owners had exactly the same problem, generally at 5 to 6 years of age. If you have a repairman come, he will likely replace the controller ($160) and charge the time and service call, usually over $300 total. If you watch the video above, you can order the relay for about $6 plus shipping, and solder it in yourself. In my opinion, this relay is far too small and its connections far too small to handle 1200 watts in the heater circuit. Considering that we have been pleased with our Bosch otherwise, I would buy a new Bosch on the condition that I would want to check for an upgraded heater relay and better connections to it.

I would like to know specifically how the Bosch silverware baskets are designed. If you look closely, you will see on either end that there are different levels for your utensils. Turn the basket over and look at it. I use those ends for long utensils such as knives, serving utensils, etc., and the ones in the center I use for forks and spoons. Also, the openings are different sizes. I was just wondering what the manufacturer had in mind.
I use my dishwasher every other day and the cycle is one hour forty minutes.

Here in Australia - we have very strict water restrictions. I've just put Bosch dishwashers in to my and my mother's house. Very different looking to this USA one (our buttons/controls are on the front). I'm intrigued that you expect dry dishes with 'no rinse aid'. Here in Australia we are very water wise - even 20 years ago my mum's first dishwasher required rinse aid to complete the dry cycle appropriately. So I'd suggest your aversion to rinse aid is simply that you're only just beginning to learn how to live in a 'dry country'.

Leave the racks inside the machine (don't extend them) as they evaporate the water or they'll cool off too quickly and not evaporate properly (and they'll also damage the rails that way). This was probably too obvious but it's good to be obvious for some people heheh.

To some postings: Hard food remainings always need to be scrapped off dishes. Fibers in fruit and vegetables are very sticky and won't dissolve with no detergent on this planet. And dried off food won't change after the third day becoming once drier. There is no measure unit like days to determine how persistent food is. Sure is, some food like cereals are quickly dried off and very persistent. It's a worth test for your dishwasher and detergents you're using

Our Bosch Serie 4 dishwasher lasted just over 2 years (i.e. just beyond the warranty period!) before it stopped heating the water and started showing error code E02. Probably a broken thermistor, but could also be a control board fault or burnt out in- line heater? Rather unhelpfully, all the Bosch website says is:
"E02: Fault with the electronics detected in the self-test.
Faults can only be eliminated by an experienced engineer, and we recommend contacting customer service."
Minimum cost of call-out and parts will be £150, probably more like £200. A new machine with a 3 year warranty can be purchased for just over £300.
    This is a ridiculous situation.
Is it any wonder so much stuff ends up in landfill?

Don't let dishes touch each other or they'll chip and no, they won't come out clean if they're loaded too close together. One complaint is that the glasses don't rinse as well as I would like. The glasses and dishes aren't usually completely dry though they're extremely hot but I just leave the dishwasher open a while and they finish air drying. Another complaint is that the spray arms clog very easily with just a tiny crumb or grain of rice and it's very difficult to dislodge anything that gets stuck. This will prevent the entire load from rinsing clean. One load does take about 2 hours.

They all take longer, it is one of the ways they get around using more water...first it washes one rack, then it washes the other rack...and reverses it again...Don't have to do a thing with the Maytag...no rinsing dishes etc. It has made me like not cleaning a filter...a lot.

The handle is molded into the plastic exterior cover and is stressed every time the dishwasher is opened. The handle on my Bosch SHE55M dishwasher broke after 2 years and 5 months. Check it out yourself before buying a Bosch. See if the handle and exterior cover flex when you open it and if it is made of plastic. The repair part is $86. I don't think a highly rated dishwasher should break after 2 years and 5 months.

We have one (800 Series) -- here's my reply to Bosch for our evaluation of the product:
The worst rack/loading arrangement ever seen. Starting with the utensil basket which someone had to have stayed up all night devising ways to make the part big and bulky but oddly shaped and with minimal space in which to place utensils. The fact that it comes apart in two pieces doesn't help fulfill its function one bit. The novel extra upper rack may be useful for washing a few items but it comes at the cost of reducing upper rack space. The upper rack and the lower rack have rows of tines (the vertical wires that separate dishes) which can be raised and lowered, presumably to hold glasses on top and dishes on bottom. Be careful to not have any items touch on the stationary side because they will collapse during the cycle. The bottom rack has the exact same dimensions as our previous dishwasher, yet on the old DW we regularly placed eight to ten place settings plus odds and ends. Not possible in the Bosch without consulting a PhD engineer and/or a mystic. Both top and bottom racks have a weird arrangement of tines that may be very useful to someone at Bosch, but they failed to share the secrets with their customers. I'm stumped, anyway. I could go on about the poor design of the racks but I will just end by saying that we have to leave the door open after each cycle to allow the dishes to dry because they fail to do so on their own heat and it does not help to employ either the "Extra Dry" or the "Sanitize" options. Our house hot water supply is >130°F. This never occurred with our previous dishwasher, on which I never used the machine's dryer selection. (NOTE: I have watched this and other Bosch videos and there is still no suggestion how to manage to do a full load with their arrangement. My recommendation? SAVE YOUR MONEY)

I really don't get the water conservation deal. I can see if you live in a desert, but here in Cincinnati, we've never had a drought bad enough to have any sort of rationing or whatever. Also, you really don't use water. You only borrow it. You wash your dishes and it gets drained out to the local sewer municipality that treats it and puts it back. You drink it, you put it back in the system. It's a no loss situation. Even what goes up in steam comes back to earth in the form of rain...

I have a new Bosch Ascenta dishwasher and I hate it! What I hate about it is the bottom tray where you load the dishes and I hate it for two reasons. One, is that I cannot load my dishes in this dishwasher the way I want to in order to get them clean. It is not set up to hold all my dishes and it won't hold my pans. I don't have a good location to put things like flippers, turners, or whatever you want to call what you use to flip hamburgers and eggs. The other thing is the bottom tray comes off track all the time and the plastic rollers go flying across the room. They don't put the silverware holder on the door and that takes room away from the bottom tray. The dishwasher runs quietly enough. If I don't use the Sanitize button, they won't get dry. It is slow. I find myself loading it and running it and washing the left over dishes by hand. I don't use the Auto cycle. I move it over to Heavy wash. That is what I have to do to get them clean. I wish I had bought a Kitchen Aid, though.

    • @2009kygal

+Debra May Don't put pots and pans in your dishwasher if you are using the dishwasher pods. They will strip the finish off your cookware! The beauty about the Bosch is you can load it anyway you want to. I put my dinner plates to right angles as to how he had them. I have fewer of them than bowls, casserole dishes, etc. Never had anything not come out clean.

    • @2009kygal
      @2009kygal 8 лет назад

My pots are stainless steel. If I can't wash them in it like I do my silverware, it has lost a big part of its usefulness. This dishwasher isn't arranged nearly as well as my other dishwasher was. When this one tears up, I will get a different kind. Now, it isn't even getting my glasses clean. They always have residue. I wonder if there is a filter stopped up or something. I don't even put gunky dishes in it like the commercials say we can do. It has just been unsastifactory all the way around. I'll get a Kitchen Aid next time.
