- Repairing And Rebuilding A 20 inch Single Speed Hub Bicycle Rear With Coaster Brakes. Easy Explanation of how to take it apart and the secret to putting it back together!
Thank you for your video on this! I watched it 4 times I think, trying to clean and repack the rear hub on my wife's cruiser bike. I did it! I took a hundred photos along the way, and kept this video handy on my phone and PC. My wife was so pleased and impressed I could do this. Now my daughter's cruiser bike is next. I appreciate the help.
Thankkkkk youuuu! You are probably a great husband so much patience with describing the set up. Omg seriously my boyfriend didn't even try to even explain to ME and the other RUclips videos still left me with doubts . Lol thank you got my bike fixed ready to start delivering food for all the people that are staying in for the pandemic. 😊
You are welcome! I am glad to have helped! When I did this video because the RUclips videos out there just didn't do a great job explaining things! Thanks for watching my howtoheaven channel!
This video was a huge help. My daughter’s 14” Disney Frozen bike needed the hub greased so I took it apart thinking it would be a pretty straight forward job despite not having done it before, and boy was I wrong. She is now happy to be riding it again. Couldn’t have done it without this video!
Haha 😂 same thought as me! I stripped my boys bike and spray painted it. 1 month later I’m now putting it back together and thinking it would be cheaper to buy a new one 😅 hopefully this video will help, just need the visual of rear axle
Thanks alot! I took my coaster apart and couldnt put it back together. Took it to a bike shop, but he couldnt figure it out either. After watching this I fixed it in about 15 mins. It was the alignment of the shoes. Thanks again!
You're welcome, glad to help!
Thank you so much for making these videos. i am currently rebuilding an old 14in bike for my daughter and your instructions have saved me alot of guess work.
I fussed with this for hours. Took me five minutes after seeing your vid. I would have never figured out the puzzle of parts. THX
You can ideally use two kinds of grease. The regular bike or marine grease works good for the caged bearings. For the hub's interior and the brake shoe assembly, you can use high-temperature bearing grease, will will hold up better than bike grease for the heat generated by using the brake. Just my two cents. Great video!
@randolphpatterson5061; you're right about grease ; its not common knowledge about grease this high temperature
ty you are the only one who showed which way they small bearings went. I used your video before but I forgot which way that outer one went thanks.
Excellent video and accompanying narrative!
Thank you I appreciate that you took the time to comment. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making this video. It saved my reputation as the fixer. I could not have gotten the wheel hub back together without it. Was close to scraping a good wheel. Thanks
Hey thanks for the video. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. You was very helpful and you saved me having to pay a bike shop to fix it. Thank you again Sir.
just used this video for teaching a student at my work how to fix things using youtube. very good job. and thanks for the help!
You are quite welcome.
Great video for beginner bike repair! I have 3 bikes I need to fix like this, lubing the front and the rear. So much RUclips time is dedicated to high-end bike repair, so it is nice to see how to fix an everyday kids bike. The same principles apply to adult cruiser bikes that are one speed.
You gotta see this other video, if this one was interesting to you. ruclips.net/video/wNF38oB6IYk/видео.html, WHAT MAKES IT WORK? #13 The Bicycle Coaster Brake tubalcain. This other one is a demonstration of how bike brakes work with a cutaway of the hub.
Thanks for the comment Gus. I haven't seen that video. I have been watching Mr Pete222 (tubalcain) for years for his machinist (late, mill, drills, grinders, etc.) videos! I never knew he did a video on coaster brakes!
Thanks so much for this detailed "how to" on this bike. This BMX bike with reverse braking was my sons back in the 1980. It sat in the attic all these years as my plan was to fix it up when my son had a son. So my grandson is now 5 and I put some air in the tires and he rode it a week ago. I told him I would put new tires on it and grease the wheel bearings. Appreciate the time and detail you put into this. Helped me out a tremendously.
Glad that I could help, thanks for the comment!
Thanks for putting it back together from the non sprocket side perspective. Couldn't get the race off of sprocket side and was having a hard time on another video.
After watching the videos on RUclips, I figured I'd make one that was more helpful
I found this video after 2 whole days (10 hours) of trying to re assemble this after not really paying attention as I pulled it apart. THANKS! 5 minutes and it was all together again.
Thank you! I'm happy that so many people like this video, please subscribe and keep watching!
This video was so much help. I have a kids bike and there was a clicking sound from the rear wheel. I'd never taken a hub apart so this video helped to see how it goes together. I cleaned all the parts, and as a test, I put it together without grease. I could see how the parts fit together. I greased it all up and put it back together. Now I have a whirring, rubbing sound that after a few rotations stops the tire. I've taken apart and put it back together a number of times, but can't seem to find out what is going on. This new sound is not the same as the original one. I've regreased, tightened, loosened. I am at a loss for what is needed to make the wheel free spin when coasting. I am hoping you can give me some ideas as to what to do. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.
Since the noise is new, and you are sure it is in the brake hub, I would take it back apart, carefully, so that you can make sure of how it was assembled! I would also check your wheel bearings to make sure that a ball bearing did not fall out. When I have a new symptom, I always double check the last thins THAT I DID! Hope this helps!
Absolutely fantastic video mate ! A++
Yes it was helpful. I hope you can know I don't make fun of folks. But if I was producing something I would want it to be effective. I meant only to point that out that it might get corrected. What you were trying to produce was indeed exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the reply.
I fully understand and noted! Unfortunately, This video as most were spontaneous and probably won't be re edited or re done, however I take your comments seriously and will keep them in mind for future videos, thanks!
Thank you for making this video. This is very helpful indeed. I am planning on purchasing a folding bike with coaster brakes, and this video will sure come handy for its maintenance.
Very helpful! I needed a refresher! I hadn't pulled apart a single speed hub with a coaster brake for about 50 years!
Thanks for putting this together for us. There are very few modern big box coaster hub videos.
Thank you, great video! I noticed that this is the way the bike disassembles when you don't know what to do. I really appreciate that you repeated the process a few times. It takes a repetition to wrap your head around the assembly.
Appreciate the great instructions. Best one for my application. I was working on my wife's beach cruiser. As simple as it seems it was complicated but you made it to where I can understand.
Thank you, and glad I could help!
Omg I was trying to replace some spokes and had to open this up and all the pieces fell out. Thought I was screwed until I found this video. Thank you for posting it!!! Saved me a whole lot of headache
You're welcome! I love that I am able to reach so many people with this video!
Great Video! I wish I would have watched BEFORE I took the rear hub apart! Haha! Very informative.
You’re awesome for posting this with such attention to detail and so well articulated! Thank you.
Thank you! I figured since I was rebuilding it for a neighbors grand daughter maybe it would help others!
Perfecto! couldn't get my brake to work properly, but your video provided all I needed!
This is an excellent video and exactly what I needed. Outside nut loosened up and destroyed the outside bearing. Once it comes in, I'll have to go about putting it back together.
Thank you so much! Glad to help! Thank you for watching HowToHeaven
Finally!!! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! First video I've seen that shows assembly of internal parts that hold the axle...
You're welcome, glad to help.
Thanks for this video, took apart my coaster brake to put on another wheel. This video put things in perspective of the alignment of the shoes which I couldnt figure out. Liked and subscribed!
This is really an excellent video and cleared up a lot of questions I had about the assembly. I think we figured it out by trial and error but didn't regrease the inside of the hub outside the brake shoes so now I feel confident taking it apart and putting it together again. Thank you
Thank you for watching and for commenting!
man u great. u teach me. the most hard part is dealing with those 2 shoes. but, as u showed, there's only one way to insert them properly fitting--- meaning insert them first (i'm sure it's the secret of pro bike repairers), and seal with the finger that side of the hub, move to next side of the hub and screw in the entire screw while the bearings and all are fitted and liberally greased. i look all over utub for that part, and ur vid is most effective. i almost gave up, til ur vid saved me
Hey buddy you're doing a good job man you're a teacher you taught me there's a lot of guys in this video RUclips that just don't know how to teach people you're doing a damn good job I've been a carpenter since 1978 I trained a lot of two-legged puppies also four-legged puppies sometimes the four-legged puppies are easier to teach then the two-legged puppies I called two-legged puppies young men I used to have a construction company building houses and I've tried a lot of two-legged puppies but you do a damn good job of teaching on his RUclips buddy I looked at a couple other ones and you couldn't follow what the heck they're doing thank you very much I appreciate you and I gave you a thumbs up and I put you as a subscriber as as full-time so whenever you get it a video on I'll be waiting for it thank you very much no I can put the back wheel together for my bike
Mine is old school and the clutch plates are a bit different but I was able to follow these instructions and get it back together. Thanks loads!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I really appreciate it. Thanks once again
You are welcome, thanks for watching HowToHeaven
GREAT VIDEO AFTER ALL VERY DETAILED
Thanks for the video, i inherited this project after m son-in-law's brother took it all apart and did not put it back together properly. I had no idea how everything belonged. Now I know.
Lots of good material here. Showing all the steps grease-free helped. I usually just deflate the tire to remove the wheel. Easier than re-adjusting the brake cable.
Thanks for the information got me out of a bind LOL
You are welcome!
Hi - Thank you. Your video made assembly simple/easy for me. Of course, the brake arm goes away from the centerline of the frame, not towards the frame. I also think it is important to make sure you have a little free play in the bearings in the final adjustment. That allows for longer bearing/cone life than if the bearings are adjusted too tightly. Rick
Excellent video! My daughter and I thank you!!!
thank you after disassemble their was only one brake pad inside thought this must be something new but after watching your video the manufacture left it out its an new beach bike with the little kids sprocket assemble wow who would of thought anyway thanks
Thank you. I needed this video to figure out the hub assembly.
You're welcome!
Ive done this plenty of times but its been so long got to make sure I remembered correct
To be honest, I use my RUclips channel, HowToHeaven, to preserve many of the things that I do, so I can use them to refresh my OWN memory! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great instructional video
But yeah thank you very much because you've been a big help. I would have had no idea how to put the stupid thing together thank you
you are welcome
THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS TUTORIAL!!
Nice job.
THANKS FOR THE VID! Excellent video. Bike is fixed = SMILES all around ;)
Thanks. Great video, helped me a lot.
Thanks so much for this.. I just couldn't figure out how to put BK together ,, and this video help me and my son,,, THANKS ☺☺☺
You're welcome Nichole!
Perfect video. Took the guess work out of the project. Thank you very much.
Well done. Thanks
You're welcome Dan!
You brutal beast!! Made your daughter wait 25 minutes while you make a video!! Lol. Great tips thanks!!
Actually, this was a neighbors grand daughter's bike, I repaired it because he didn't know how and she couldn't ride with my son because her bike was broken!
Thank you for this video, really helped me out fixing my sons bike.
Thank you so much for the video!
I would like to add one thing. When tightening up the last nuts on the axle (not the outer nuts that keep the wheel on the dropouts, the nuts just inward of those,) they should be tightened snug and backed out a very small amount and tightened finger tight.
The first tighten seats the bearings, then finger tight holds them in place. The bearings should have almost no pre-load to keep them from premature wear. Pretty much all of the load should be from rotational forces, and a little bit to make sure they stay seated.
Thank you again, I have never serviced a coaster brake hub before. I do appreciate all your knowledge and effort.
Thank you, and I am sure your comment will help others too!
This video was a lifesaver!
Thank you for watching and it you like my videos, please subscribe, trying to get to 1000 subscribers, currently at 892!
I'm doing a vintage bendix 76 hub, my 1st one... it has 4 shoes... im so apprehensive to even start, I know Im going to screw it up. Wish there was a video of this quality with this specific hub. This vid is awesome
Thank you, sorry I can't help, but I would suggest looking for an exploded diagram on google. Thanks for watching!
I have a coaster bike that's been making an annoying buzzing sound from the freehub and this video gave me the confidence to take it apart for a clean-up and hopefully the solution to my problem. We'll see how it goes! lol
It Was You
How did that work out for you?
My daughter has a 20" (I think) bicycle and I need to get her a longer hub shaft for pegs. Hoping I don't mess it up...
Thank you for the video
Thank you for watching!
Excellent job! Thanks so much.
brilliant, after a lot of search found the right one!
Glad to help!
Buddy I just want to say thank you!
You are welcome, and thank you for watching my videos!
It's quite amazing how many parts are in something that I just assumed was a metal pole sticking through the wheel.
Well, live and learn! Thanks for watching!
Great video! The easiest video to understand.
0:53 This nuts!
Thanks man helped me fixing my bike!
My daughter got fishing line wound up in the hub I took it apart to remove the line but couldn’t get it back together. I was just about to give up and just buy a new bike then I found your video. Thanks!
I am glad that I could help!
🙋🏻♂️I thank you for your excellent video emplaning the disassembly and which side is the sprocket side. I’m using marine grease which is better for when it gets in water. 7-19-2021 🇺🇸 Those two halves are the brakes.Little bikes for little children are somewhat different but similar. Thanks again.
Glad it helped and thanks for watching my videos!
Awesome! Thanks much for the video. It was a great help.
A great video. Got me out of a jam. Thanks
So glad it helped you!
Thank you so much it was very helpful I repair the bike waaaaay
You're welcome, turns out this is one of my most popular videos! Thanks for watching, and please subscribe.
If this were 720 or 1080 video quality this would be a 10/10. 9/10 ain't bad though
Very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks, its very helpful.
You did an outstanding job on this video! Excellent, clear, and understandable. Thank you so much
Awesome
Lol finally what I needed to find
I have to be honest . I have rebuilt car engines motorcycle engines , restored motorcycles and have scratched my head like a chimp opening a coconut trying to assemble a coaster brake rear wheel handed to me in pieces for a 12” Trek sidewalk bike .
The brake shoes actually went in rhe reverse of the Schwinn , but your video got me in the ballpark better than others . (I assume due to the tiny size of everything or perhaps patent protection) The bike and the little girl are back on the road, thank you .
You're welcome, glad I could help!
Thank you so much!!! You save me $89 dollars on another bike.
You are welcome!
Most coaster brake videos I've watched don't disturb the lever, and disassemble opposite side.
I think to be thorough a complete disassembly and greasing is a must!
Thank You
Your Welcome! Thanks for watching my videos!
Is it possible to add spacers to the sprocket on a coaster brake hub for chainline adjustment? Does it matter if the sprocket is flat/threaded or dished?
Love the video! My son's bearings have locked up and metal is shredding :(. Where would you suggest ordering a new rear hub? It's a bike very similar to the one in the video. 20 inch kids bike with pedal breaks. Thanks!
Unless the metal that is shredding is from the hub or the axle, I would just replace the bearings and grease it up real good. If you find you need parts, try a yard sale or swap meet for another wheel.
Light in the hub would be good.
Everytime I take one apart its over it never ever ever works right again 😢..am i just not gifted in this area or something?? Thanks for the video I will try as you are very easy to follow
perfect, thank you. :)
You're welcome. When I made this video I figured it would help someone out, I never expected it to be my most popular video to date! Thanks for watching!
Thanks
You are welcome, glad to help!
Would you be able to tell me if a universal pegs kit could be added on to a boys huffy 20inch pedal back brake bike ?
Thank you so much for doing this video. It was a huge help!
Jamianessa Davis I think you should just look for a new little bike at a garage sell because for what this bike is 😶 a children's toy😏 is it really worth breaking your nail😮
My comment didn't require a reply, I was merely thanking you for the post. I'm not sure if it was meant to be sexist, "breaking your nail," but it certainly sounds that way. And I wasn't rebuilding a children's garage sale bicycle, it was a classic Schwinn. But thanks for the comment...6 months later. I'll be sure to unsubscribe from your "manly" channel. I wouldn't want to break a nail!
Jamianessa Davis I Not being sexist just stating all none mountain/road bike have universal wheels that are cheap and not worth the effort to try and fix😃
I know late response, I'm not a professional youtuber...they demonitized me! Sorry but I did NOT reply to your comment, that was someone else!
Thanks a lot...!
I bought a used bike for my granddaughter, for some reason there seems to be too much friction, this should help a lot, thanks
Is there any way to adjust the amount of slack between forward pedaling and backward braking? The neutral slack zone between forward and backward is too much. Is there a way to adjust that?
I do not believe any adjustments are possible with this design.
PERFECT
Had a tuff one but got it!
Awesome video. Thank you but i have a question. My sons bike has cable brakes on front and back. The bike is a bit big for him still. He isnt strong enough to pull breaks. Is it possible to do away with cable wire brakes and install the coaster brake where he would peddle backwards to stop?
H Henderson yes it is possible to da away with the squeeze break leavers but if you did that you would have to replace the rim to make sure the coaster break would fit the rim
on my bike the sproket side came out instead of the brake hub..I have a beast mongoose
I have a new bike and coaster brake not stopping bike at higher speeds. I have not taken apart but seems putting grease on brake pads would be bad. I assumed you would try and clean the pads and leave grease free. What am I missing.
AFAIK the grease is necessary for proper operation.
What would cause a coaster brake hub to free wheel pedal backwards without the coaster brake braking?
You will have to remove and disassemble the coaster brake to find out why yours is not working. I can't tell without doing the same! Use my video as a reference as many have done, and I am sure you will solve your problem! Thanks for watching
do you have to put the braking system back in? tge spring is broke on my daughters n is making a crazy sound.
