Well done summation of this battle. Field Marshall Henrici doesn't seem to be noted anywhere else in the war until this battle. He and Heir Hitler didn't get along, nor did Goering like him, but I have the utmost admiration for him because he was well liked and respected by his troops, and cared about their lives more than most of his rank. What did Henrici do before this battle? I assume he was in the Eastern Front for the entire war, so what operations did he support prior? Thank you for this video!
There is only one way to find out if an idea is a good one and that is to try. Mistakes will happen, good leaders know this and avoid making them twice So, did they do this twice?
@@shorunqualtec2070 lol “well we are going to try it anyway” that’s the communist way when lives are at stake. And yes they used it many times after this in the late stages of the war. When they were attempting to prevent a breakout of German forces attempting to attack to the west out of the kessel to the American lines they had spotlights. Once again, didn’t work and pretty much a slaughter of their own. Breakout also succeeded.
The bolsheviks stole the idea from the Germans, who called it "Artificial Moonlight" and had 1st attempted to employ it on a significant scale several months earlier, during the beginning of the offensive against the Western Allies in the Ardennes region (now known as the Battle of the Bulge). The use of the lighting turned against the Wehrmacht, instead causing their troops advancing under cover of darkness to be backlit and sharply outlined in the sight of the defending Allied soldiers. This not only negated the element of surprise, but cost the Germans many unnecessary casualties upon launching their operation Wacht am Rhein. Not sure if the Soviets thought they could do it better, or what...but pretty sure no one has given it a third major try since WW2 ended.
@@tremainetreerat5176 wow! Didn't know the germans used it first! Thanks so much for the bit of history! In retrospect it does sound like a pretty ridiculous idea.
One of my favorite battles if only because of the final stand of the German army. The narrator needs to slow down and pronounce every word instead of rushing through and barely pronouncing some words. I needed the transcript and after doing all the hard work and effort in creating this video why make the narration like an afterthought.
I like these history lessons
Thankyou buddy

Ah yes, the soviet searchlights blinding their own men rather than the enemy, whoops!

@@ian_b thanks dude wish I'd known this before haha 😂
@@SirJellyBean Well now you know😃
The memories of doing this in Call of Duty game is coming back. Also, I too am sort of expert on the battle due to playing Call of Duty: World at War.
Full of knowledge Lord Raven is .
You need to show the strategic movement of attack and defence on a map to visualise the battle. The gameplay footage is also questionable.
@@lando30001 what is questionable
I would prefer maps.
Well I geuss my style a little different to most
