I'm a MB technician. There aren't any exposed lug bolts for purely cosmetic reasons. There's a special tool we use to remove those, like a giant plastic socket, to remove the covers, as they screw onto the wheels to ensure they dont fall off while driving or get stolen as easily.

Wish I had a good place to actually wash during the winter. Self wash places don't let you do anything near this level of cleaning, and that's only possible when they're actually open and the water isn't freezing on the car.

Another great video Larry. I live in a climate the same as yours. My trouble is my shop doesn't have a floor drain or water, so it's tough to keep the car looking good in the winter. Another key part to clean is in the wheel wells, there's usually a little lip where the quarter panels meet along the top. In Minnesota, you see vehicles ALWAYS rusting there first. I always make sure to clean that lip on every wash. Especially in winter/spring.

Thanks Larry, just need to convert the knowledge you’ve imparted today for a single car garage at home with no floor drain. I actually did my truck yesterday and it turned out great. I used a pump sprayer to wet each panel then when over it with a soft sponge. I sprayed each panel off and then used a chamois to dry each panel as I went. I kept two buckets of clean water at all times. I am assuming that my paint which is an opaque white is a single stage paint? I was told by the GMC dealer it’s a water-based white basecoat with clearcoat over it.

    Hey Larry,
thanks for another cool video. My car washing days are over since I am legally blind and have not driven in about 15 years and do not even own a car anymore. As a kid I had a summer job doing boat detailing so I have a little history doing what you do lo those many decades ago! hahaha We were definitely not as sophisticated in our cleaning as you are but, we did have a pretty wide array of tools and products to strip (when necessary like teak decks) clean, re-stain and polish everything we might encounter. My big brother did this job for about 2 years so he knew what he was doing pretty well. All I had to do was pay attention and work hard (it was a hard job as some of the boats were yachts!).
Secondly, let me say that I did live for two years in a suburb of Detroit, MI and for two years in Bethel, Alaska (the arm pit of Alaska haha) so I do know cold weather even though it was a very long time ago when I was under the age of 10. Here goes my confession. I never learned to ice skate back then.
I taught myself to ice skate as a 40 + year old adult. I really enjoyed skating a lot and wish I had lived closer to a rink here in California so I could skate more. Unfortunately, I only skated about 7 times in my life and never learned to stop properly nor to skate backwards! Nor did I ever have the joy of playing hockey.
My motivation for learning to skate was I became a die hard San Jose Sharks hockey club fan back in the day during their first play off appearance against the then mighty Red Wings. That experience of watching play off hockey hooked me hard. The play was intense. The San Jose fans were insane. I have attended many events over the years and coached high school wrestling for 10 years and never have I seen such berserk fans as the San Jose fans during that first series ever where the Sharks knocked off the Presidents cup winning Red Wings in 7 games on a Jamie Baker goal from the high slot. Absolute pandemonium and euphoria!
I am still a die hard Sharks fan even though we are currently near our very worst team ever. At just over the half way point the Sharks are averaging just a shade over 1/2 a point per game in the standings which would be the 3rd worst result in franchise history! Regardless, no bandwagoning for me. I stick it out and watch every game til the bitter end.
Apologies for rambling on about stuff but, you brought up that you play hockey and so I had to dive in full hog. hahaha I am curious Larry 1) What position you play (I will guess forward because your a speed guy) and 2) Are you and your buds playing in a league or just playing pick up games? If you are in a league how is your team faring this year?
Thanks again Larry for all the cool videos. I love it. All my best to you, your family and the team (if there is one?).

Its been awesome to follow your career Larry! I remember about 10 years ago stumbling across your channel while looking for info on wet sanding paint. You had only put out about 6 videos or so at that point, even way before the podcast you did. I'm happy for you buddy, I don't know if you remember me or not but I used to live in North Carolina and would call you up every once in a while to ask questions. Even when I was back here in New Mexico working for a high end detail shop I called you because we kept getting "love marks" on the paint while removing coatings. I'll never forget it, the owner was too prideful and didn't believe me that I had your contacts and that you would have the answer! Low and behold you did! "Wash your towels first because new microfiber towels can scratch paint". Sure enough you were right and that was the beginning to the end of me working at that shop lolol. We figured out the issue and the dude got mad at me lolol. Anyways, keep on keeping on buddy, I'm proud of you!

I, too, was wondering about the lack of an undercarriage spray. This is a necessary part of my winter washes here in central Indiana and we don’t get near the salt that the northeast does.
If anyone is fortunate enough to have a place to wash their car in the winter and has a power washer, get yourself an undercarriage sprayer attachment for the winter.
The other tips are great but this (spraying the salt from the undercarriage) is absolutely necessary for those environments where salt is applied to the roadway. I’d even say it’s the MOST important part of a winter wash.

From Canada here, and our winters are brutal, if you don’t wash your car often here the mud and grime does not come off with a regular wash, so doing multiple washes a week or so definitely ensures that that grime doesn’t stick, usually my process is foam, let sit for 3-5 min rinse, foam again and use a hand wash with a bucket of hot water, applying as many layers as lubricants is crucial for these conditions

For anyone that deals with salt and snow in the winter, get a roll of blue plastic fender wrap to protect your floor mats. (It’s what the mechanics use while working under your hood, basically a thick Saran Wrap.)
I bought a 24”x 30’ roll and it has lasted a few winters already. Just put a layer on top of your floor mat, towel the moisture off it after each snow, and change it whenever it rips or starts to get crusty from the salt. Tear it off in the spring and enjoy your pristine floor mats.

I ended up purchasing a $30 a month wash pass at my local tunnel car wash. I know this isn't popular, but the Department of Public Works has started using a salt brine on the roads. I don't have a garage to wash my vehicle in, so I decided to purchase the tunnel wash membership with the undercarriage option. It's not ideal, but I want to avoid rust.
I wouldn't feel comfortable using this tunnel wash on something that isn't my daily driver. Just a thought for people who have to suffer salt as much as I do!

Do you have a self-serve "pay and spray" car wash near you? When I wash and detail my cars in winter, I bring my bin of chemicals (mineral deposit remover, after all, salt is a mineral, wheel cleaners, iron remover, if needed, pre-rinse mixture of car wash soap in my pump sprayers. I spray the MDR, wheel cleaners and my pre-rinse mixture on the paintwork, then use the rinse function only.. I spray the wheel and undercarriage first,t hen the paintwork from the top down. $10 gets me 16 minutes of time. I have a garage with heat, so I do a rinseless wash when I get home.

@@ronayotte3571 I do and I have done what you do. I just get frustrated when I spend all of that time detailing my car for it to just get dirty again in the winter. My car is completely wrecked within a day because the road salt.
It's a waste of time here in the winter. I would rather spend that time on other things. At the end of the day, it's a daily.

Larry, do you use hard Water directly from the outlet ?. Or do you use Deionized water ?. Don. San Jose, CA. 1-14-2024.

Satin cars HAVE to have full satin clear bra. unrealistic not to. Also get weather tech floor mats!

Where I live in the North of England they’ve just salted many of the main roads. It’s okay but definitely good to keep the car rinsed. I have coated all the undercarriage of my car with Bilt hamber clear protectant which lasts 12 months or so. Cars that aren’t maintained i.e rinsed and or protected can become extremely corroded in a few years as a result of the salt.

I'm a bit confused: at 3:05, he talks about rinsing the cars, then at 3:09 he talks about agitating the car with a microfiber towel, and then at 3:18 he talks about rinsing it again? And then at 3:35 he mentions using microfiber towels again

After reading up on matte paint finishes and maintenance, I don't understand why anyone would get that. Asking a lot just to look different. I'd just get a matte wrap if I wanted to sport that sort of look.

Nice if you have a heated space and floor drains. Unfortunately, I have neither so washing at home in subzero conditions is a no-go. I use weather tech mats in the winter to preserve regular floor mats for the other three seasons.

I have a hoseless wash formula called Frothe with the same anti-salt capabilities. Lot of apartment dwellers have success with that. Video on YT as well

One reason there's no exposed lug nuts on higher end cars is because criminals are just as impatient as little bitty toddlers. If something is going to take just 30 more seconds to steal they feel more vulnerable than JFK standing next to Marilyn Monroe. As for an aesthetic reason, it's smooth, subtle, and confusing.

Matte paint is worthless. Just do a matte wrap so you dont have to deal with improper wash or costly paint repairs. And when your sick of it, and you will be, just peel it off for a fresh factory glossy paint.
