This will come in handy the next time I've got an enormous diamond sitting around.
It happens. You reach into your pocket for a quarter and suddenly you pull out a 45kt diamond and diamond all over
Same thoughts.. 😅
You can go digging for them in Arkansas. Not necessarily laying around but pretty much uncut lumps everywhere there
I think this trick is for people who buy diamonds
@@joeyd.staats9546now the cost of getting a visa and booking a flight to arkansas
That's really interesting.
And it's wrong. There are 3 diffrent stones I can name off the top of my head with a refractive index high enough for this. Diamond, then 2 simulations, strontium titanate, and moissanite. Neither is any kind of diamond. Also lab diamonds will pass this. Alot of people don't realize lab stones are real though, just created differently
@@Celestial_Reach so lab stones are real diamond? Or i'm missing your point

Agreed I'll rember that trick
Depends on the cut of the diamond, though. Some vintage style rose or portrait cuts are indeed transparent in the centre but are authentic diamonds all the same.
Exactly 😊👍

Generally correct. A very shallow poorly cut (or rose cut) diamond may allow you to see the red color. Conversely, there a many simulants that you cannot see though. Comments from a GIA Graduate Jeweler Gemologist
Kinda was thinking on the lines of that.. if it doesn't have too many cuts you can probably see but since this one in the video is bigger and has a lot the cuts, the color waves are scattered, making them undetected.
Depends on cut. Dispersion different in man made. CZ different story from real.
That is what I was thinking, a "windowed" cut lets light through. I am not a gemnologist, but studied minerals.

Total internal reflection
There are stones that have higher dispersion than diamond. The reason this test works is because ‘round brilliant’ cut diamonds have been designed to refract and reflect light back through the crown of the gem.
It’s based off of a number of factors.
Critical angle is calculated from the refractive indexes of the 2 mediums (I.e air to diamond)
If a light ray hits the surface of a diamond (internal/external) at an angle greater than the critical angle instead of passing through to the other medium it will reflect instead
This means if you had a diamond Cube and were to do the dot test, light would just pass straight through as it would be at an angle of 0 degrees to the normal.
Meaning the shape of the diamond and the way it’s cut also plays a role.
It is only true when diamond is cut to this specific brilliant shape with calculated for the diamond refractive index depth(angle) of the bottom cone part, called - pavillion...
If the real diamond cut differently than that, you will see through the flat part called table, as well😊👍😉

How have you been, Sir!!!
Most of us didn't need this tutorial we just like to watch this type of vids
An explanation would've been interesting
In real diamonds, total internal reflection occurs which does not allow the light rays to exit the diamond. U only see things when rays fall on your retina.
The explanation is this is BS. See through stones happens in all minerals. It depends on the cutting angle. While the ideal angles vary from mineral to mineral it is possible to cut stones that are to shallow (and see through) in all minerals.
You can see that this is no expert because he calls them BOTH diamonds. There are no fake diamonds in the trade. If they are fake they are not diamonds.
It is due to the index of refraction. Glass can bend light, but diamond bends it way more. With diamonds, the light is bent so much, you can't see the red spot looking straight on.

This happens because diamond has a refractive index of 2.42 and it bends light a lot.
This assumes the cut of the diamond is to the standard dimensions. (And that you're working with a round brilliant cut stone!)
A badly cut diamond can still show the dot through it - but at that point, that baby's so badly cut you probably don't want it anyway.
