What a brilliant video! As someone with a disability it is hard to explain the cloying, patronising, embarrassing way the media usually portrays people with disabilities. It is so rare to find a video like this one that treats us like real people & that maintains a sense of humour. I can not explain how impressed I am. More like this please!
I get this sometimes too. I have Asperger's Syndrome and sometimes don't know how to express myself, or respond to people's comments. One example was when I went on a university visit and was waiting in line to see the disability student advisors. A man came up to me and said, "Excuse me, I think you're in the wrong line. You don't look like you have a disability." So I responded with, "Well you don't look ignorant, but I guess we can't judge on personal appearance!" And then I walked off, and my mum burst out laughing! :)
my grandparents have blind friends that are a couple and they drive them to church every Sunday and we have a blind senator in Washington I've met. they are both cheerful, inspirational people and they know they wouldn't change anything for the world.

I worked in a job center with a blind guy. At EVERY official meeting he would ask " do you do that in braille?" and before the top knob answered would say " I will feel you about that later" LOL Workmates who were amputees used to say "sorry, must run along now" Brilliant sense of humour and taught me A LOT !
I don't fit into the binary of disabled, my biggest issue is that people don't understand why i might be in my wheelchair one day but not the next and instead of just asking about it they gossip behind my back and living in a small town it always gets back to me.
I kind of know what you feel like man. I have arthritis, one day I need help just to get out of my seat next day I can run miles so people get confused
Kudos for BBC Three's programming on disability. What I've seen of it is very impressive (not without issues at all but well ahead of what one usually sees in various media). I wish PBS would do something this ambitious.
I'm disabled.. I have a chronic illness that effects my immune system.. it basically makes my immune system attack healthy organs because it is interpreting them as foreign objects.. multiple surgeries, not being able to walk normally, wearing braces... the worst thing, in my opinion, is being told that "You look perfectly fine, until you start limping.." or like, one of my faves.. "You're so beautiful.. you should start walking normal and try putting on makeup and stop holding your stomach..". I'd love to, good sir, but I can't. Thank you for the input lol
The most annoying thing is when someone asked about my disabilities & how they affect me... Then tell me I am wrong about my analysis of my own conditions & how they affect me on a day to day basis; or that specialists doctors have misdiagnosed me, because obviously this person I have just met knows more about my conditions o.O I really don't mind people asking questions, if they really want to know & learn but arguing about my answer is just annoying.
I'm in a wheelchair and I think the "you're so inspiring" thing is number one. Like I'm at the grocery store and people tell me how inspiring I am. I have done nothing special?? I'm only human!
Last Young Renegade Your absolutely wrong my friend! Life is full of choices regardless of your disabilities! For example, you do have the choice of totally giving up, cashing in all your chips and.... well, killing yourself for a way out! Granted, that's not a good choice most of the time but it certainly a choice regardless... When you view yourself as having no choices, there are no options left. Rsrely will you ever find yourself without ANY options, it's really a case of what choices are good, viable and intelligent as opposed to not having a single choice.... I'm continually in chronic agonizing pain, but I choose to put up with it any way I'm able to rather than kill myself to end the pain & suffering, sometimes I think about that but ultimately I make the choice of hanging on & trying to manage the pain in any semi reasonable fashion. I have the option of ending my struggle, but I prefer to hang on and fight.... You see? There's almost always a choice to be made! Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise! As Long as you choose to fight the disability you're exercising a good choice! When you convince yourself that you don't have a choice, you're making a choice to give up! You are worth it, choose to fight the good fight! Bless all of you, I became disabled at 35 years old, I've been disabled for 26 years and counting now... Was it worth hanging on, givin the fact that my pain is chronic and gets progressively worse with time.... I don't know, I'm still here, and I'm still choosing to fight... I am profoundly deaf in both ears from mumps as a pre-born baby, so can identify with the deaf man in the video. One thing that really pisses me off is when companies such as DirectLine assume that everyone on Earth can hear, so expect you to phone them to cancel or change a policy, and no damn email facility. I cannot use the phone. So I obtained their main office address online and wrote to them that my old Renault 19 car is now scrapped...please cancel my car insurance for this car, only to receive a letter saying to PHONE the other office in another part of England. Bloody idiots! This happened to me again before then in booking my driving test, only I was required to phone the DVLA office in Glasgow. I could have needed a translator to translate Scottish by an Indian man into English; my well-hearing friend who I visited had to take over the phone from me, and even he had difficulty understanding this “foreign language” with its double vowels and rolling 'R' ( R’s oles). With compassion and empathy, one could ask a disabled person: How does it affect you? Can I be of any help? And treat them as normal, equal people and lovingly overlook their handicap.
Sad really, as he is making everyone hate him and making himself unhappy. Remember Jesus' words: with the judgement that he is judging others, by that judgement he will be judged, and by your words you will be condemned. I have an invisible physical disability, so I am constantly told, "but you don't look sick." I would understand if these people didn't know anything about me, but it's usually that people say this after I tell them I have a chronic invisible illness. It's then that they say things like "but you don't look sick" and "well when will you get better?" I just told you. It's invisible. And it's chronic.

I've been in a wheelchair for 16 years and what I love is when someone may use the word walk. Example, "If you walk right in there and can get what you need; it would be a miracle." My reply, "if I walked in there it would be a miracle in itself." Yes I love wheelchair humor, I will throw out a wheelchair joke before I realize what I'm even saying. I have even found myself using the word walk, I guess that will never go away. My ex boyfriend forgot a few times that I was in a wheelchair. One day he grabbed all of the groceries and when walking to the house; he stood there for about five minutes waiting for me to bring him the keys, when I didn't come he put the groceries down and came looking for me frustrated. He then realized he forgot to get the chair out and noticed the, "your a dumb ass look on my face." I have been told many times that I don't act like I'm in a wheelchair, this statement still gets to me. How do you act like your in a wheelchair?
its so hard being disabled ,, my mind wants to do things ,, its my body that holds me back ,, if not for my fortune of being able to have a family that has farmland and living on that farm , i would have gotten into drugs and all sorts of organized crime ,, my disability prevents me from regular employment and if i had to live in a town or city , and after paying the overly high amount of rent i would just barely make ends meet ,, it like living just to wait for death ,, it makes no sense ,, the only reason i am feeling better about life now , is due to my girlfriend , we have been dating now for over a year and she is a very persistent lady and the persistence alone helps , not to mention that she is a very great person with a great personality ,, i love her with everything i have ,, she is my beautiful angel ,, on another topic ,,, with all the so called christians out there , why when asked for the help they say they would offer , do i always get the " if i were not so busy answer ",, they should not say they will help if they really will not ,,
Kezia E.A.Wilkinson as another visually impaired person, I just want to say they don't know. There are some conditions that glasses can help with. From their perspective it is easy to understand. The only thing I hate hearing is when people who wear glasses who don't have any diagnosis like a visual impairment saying that they are blind when they take their glasses off. Now the people who can improve some of their vision with glasses are still visually impaired, so I don't mind when they say that.
for my tourettes, i get a lot of animal comparisons, eg: "you sound like a mouse!" , "is there a dog in here??". i used to have guinea pigs, and they actually thought i was talking to them when I ticced. also, on bad days, teachers often ask me if i want to leave the room. kinda feels like a polite way of saying " you're annoying me, go away".
Three things: Firstly, you can see an accent on the lips. I'm not Deaf, but I can tell whether someone is speaking English or French on a silent video. Second, most Deaf people who can speak have had intensive speech therapy. The therapist naturally trains them to use the same accent they have. Third, not all Deaf people are completely deaf. The guy in the video has a hearing aid, so that indicates he has some hearing. With a hearing aid, sometimes it's possible to hear a bit of what someone's saying. It's not perfect, that's why Deaf people also tend to have a Deaf accent.
I know someone who was born profoundly deaf. We were talking a lot and I only realized he was deaf after he asked me to make sure I was facing him when talking because otherwise he wouldn't be able to "see" what I was saying. He has no speech impediment, he doesn't "sound deaf". Speech therapy can be pretty impressive sometimes.
I have 3 invisible disabilities and 1 kinda visable illness and I'm in foster care my case worker used to leave out I was disabled untill the families met me 4 years later she told me " no one wants a trans disabled out of control kid" I'm 16 still in foster care and her words ring in my head every single day
People like me need to spend extra time socializing one another and it's important to embrace our words. Sometimes, we focus on our Pros and Cons to take everything serious.

I don't mind if people I know and see me struggle with my CRPS every day think I'm an inspiration. I struggle a lot. What bugs me is when random people say it. They don't know me.
I had to teach my class for a lesson, so I asked my teacher if I can teach about this, he said yes and to my shock my class actually listened (they usually are always talking). My teacher loved the lesson and I loved teaching them about this because it interests me.

Yes! It's the worst when people think "you're a fraud" or something... I have a physical disability and almost always walk with a slightly limp, you can hardly notice it. But when I'm in a wheelchair and I move my legs or stand up, people stare at me as if I have three heads or something... It's so nice when other people get it!
So, I am multiply disabled and have been my whole life. For I just wish people didn't feel the need to belittle me. Or say oh you can't be deaf or hard of hearing you know what I am saying or I don't see your hearing aid. NOT all deaf people have hearing aids, they are quite costly, and do't work for everyone.

i am disabled but not deaf . however i sign really well cause my mam taught me . i have a lot of deaf friends . i met a friend in the car park of our local retail park . we had not seen each other in years and signed away at each other . a bloke started screaming at us saying all sorts of vile things at us . i left my friend and started signing at the bloke . he continued screaming at me saying he had no clue what i was saying and it was pointless cause i could not her him . I then signed and said very loudly at him "NOT EVERYONE WHO SIGNS IS DEAF" the entire car park laughed at him . i felt great for the rest of the week . the world is full of idiots .

Yes, the "Oh ,you're so --------" strong brave, inspiring fill in the Fucking blank. I actually learned to swear because people were telling me how...I was and my life was because I can feed myself and navigate my own home. Worse were the people that thought my kids should be taken away because I'm different! I ACTUALLY HAD TO GO TO COURT at one point, in my wheelchair, don't drive, and the most un-amusing moment was watching the Judge come out on crutches, because of a sprained ankle and just Gawp at me. OMG. Thankfully, it turned out ok. The Judge came out and said that he had a ton of respect for me, because I was there early, and he drive a stick and knew just how miserable public transport was, he was late.
I think that when someone says "You're so brave" or "I think it's amazing that someone disabled is doing great things"... they don't mean it as an insult or to be patronizing. I think most people genuinely think that it is amazing because they aren't disabled. They can only imagine how difficult it might be. The rest of the things said to disabled people though... just ignorant. Ew.
I'm sometimes annoyed by constantly being referred to as "disabled" - it implies that I am "not able" to do anything that everybody else does, even though currently I am on crutches and can't do many things "normal" people do - which is another reference I hate. I am just as normal as anybody else, I'm not an alien from Mars, I just have a few health problems. I think "partially disabled" is tolerable, but "disabled" sounds as though I can't do anything at all. I know it is only a minor issue, I'm used to it and can even laugh about it - my mother used to always refer to me as being "crippled," that's the term they used in her day!

It depends on the person, actually. For most people it's just a description if you don't know their name.

Kudos for BBC Three's programming on disability. What I've seen of it is very impressive (not without issues at all but well ahead of what one usually sees in various media). I wish PBS would do something this ambitious.

I have a chronic illness that effects my immune system.. it basically makes my immune system attack healthy organs because it is interpreting them as foreign objects.. multiple surgeries, not being able to walk normally, wearing braces... the worst thing, in my opinion, is being told that "You look perfectly fine, until you start limping.." or like, one of my faves.. "You're so beautiful.. you should start walking normal and try putting on makeup and stop holding your stomach..". I'd love to, good sir, but I can't. Thank you for the input lol

I thought I was the only deaf person who wondered why people were asking me how old I was. Glad to see I'm not alone!
The most annoying thing is when someone asked about my disabilities & how they affect me... Then tell me I am wrong about my analysis of my own conditions & how they affect me on a day to day basis; or that specialists doctors have misdiagnosed me, because obviously this person I have just met knows more about my conditions o.O
I really don't mind people asking questions, if they really want to know & learn but arguing about my answer is just annoying.

Last Young Renegade Your absolutely wrong my friend! Life is full of choices regardless of your disabilities! For example, you do have the choice of totally giving up, cashing in all your chips and.... well, killing yourself for a way out! Granted, that's not a good choice most of the time but it certainly a choice regardless... When you view yourself as having no choices, there are no options left. Rsrely will you ever find yourself without ANY options, it's really a case of what choices are good, viable and intelligent as opposed to not having a single choice.... I'm continually in chronic agonizing pain, but I choose to put up with it any way I'm able to rather than kill myself to end the pain & suffering, sometimes I think about that but ultimately I make the choice of hanging on & trying to manage the pain in any semi reasonable fashion. I have the option of ending my struggle, but I prefer to hang on and fight.... You see? There's almost always a choice to be made! Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise! As Long as you choose to fight the disability you're exercising a good choice!

I am profoundly deaf in both ears from mumps as a pre-born baby, so can identify with the deaf man in the video. One thing that really pisses me off is when companies such as DirectLine assume that everyone on Earth can hear, so expect you to phone them to cancel or change a policy, and no damn email facility. I cannot use the phone. So I obtained their main office address online and wrote to them that my old Renault 19 car is now scrapped...please cancel my car insurance for this car, only to receive a letter saying to PHONE the other office in another part of England. Bloody idiots!
This happened to me again before then in booking my driving test, only I was required to phone the DVLA office in Glasgow. I could have needed a translator to translate Scottish by an Indian man into English; my well-hearing friend who I visited had to take over the phone from me, and even he had difficulty understanding this “foreign language” with its double vowels and rolling 'R' ( R’s oles). With compassion and empathy, one could ask a disabled person: How does it affect you? Can I be of any help? And treat them as normal, equal people and lovingly overlook their handicap.
Sad really, as he is making everyone hate him and making himself unhappy. Remember Jesus' words: with the judgement that he is judging others, by that judgement he will be judged, and by your words you will be condemned. He is missing out on the good loving friendships that our dear brothers enjoy. Not that I care about him anymore after he called me a deaf fuck. I have an invisible physical disability, so I am constantly told, "but you don't look sick." I would understand if these people didn't know anything about me, but it's usually that people say this after I tell them I have a chronic invisible illness. It's then that they say things like "but you don't look sick" and "well when will you get better?" I just told you. It's invisible. And it's chronic.

I don't want to sit in the corner and be anybody's inspiration and I don't need anyone to tell me that I don't look disabled. sometimes I get so frustrated with how people talk to me. condescending baby talk isn't Fun when your a fully intelligent adult. it's nice to know that some people just get it.
I've been in a wheelchair for 16 years and what I love is when someone may use the word walk. Example, "If you walk right in there and can get what you need; it would be a miracle." My reply, "if I walked in there it would be a miracle in itself." Yes I love wheelchair humor, I will throw out a wheelchair joke before I realize what I'm even saying. I have even found myself using the word walk, I guess that will never go away. My ex boyfriend forgot a few times that I was in a wheelchair. One day he grabbed all of the groceries and when walking to the house; he stood there for about five minutes waiting for me to bring him the keys, when I didn't come he put the groceries down and came looking for me frustrated. He then realized he forgot to get the chair out and noticed the, "your a dumb ass look on my face." I have been told many times that I don't act like I'm in a wheelchair, this statement still gets to me. How do you act like your in a wheelchair?

its so hard being disabled ,, my mind wants to do things ,, its my body that holds me back ,, if not for my fortune of being able to have a family that has farmland and living on that farm , i would have gotten into drugs and all sorts of organized crime ,, my disability prevents me from regular employment and if i had to live in a town or city , and after paying the overly high amount of rent i would just barely make ends meet ,, it like living just to wait for death ,, it makes no sense ,, the only reason i am feeling better about life now , is due to my girlfriend , we have been dating now for over a year and she is a very persistent lady and the persistence alone helps , not to mention that she is a very great person with a great personality ,, i love her with everything i have ,, she is my beautiful angel ,, on another topic ,,, with all the so called christians out there , why when asked for the help they say they would offer , do i always get the " if i were not so busy answer ",, they should not say they will help if they really will not ,,

Kezia E.A.Wilkinson as another visually impaired person, I just want to say they don't know. There are some conditions that glasses can help with. From their perspective it is easy to understand. The only thing I hate hearing is when people who wear glasses who don't have any diagnosis like a visual impairment saying that they are blind when they take their glasses off. Now the people who can improve some of their vision with glasses are still visually impaired, so I don't mind when they say that.

for my tourettes, i get a lot of animal comparisons, eg: "you sound like a mouse!" , "is there a dog in here??". i used to have guinea pigs, and they actually thought i was talking to them when I ticced. also, on bad days, teachers often ask me if i want to leave the room. kinda feels like a polite way of saying " you're annoying me, go away".

Three things:
Firstly, you can see an accent on the lips. I'm not Deaf, but I can tell whether someone is speaking English or French on a silent video.
Second, most Deaf people who can speak have had intensive speech therapy. The therapist naturally trains them to use the same accent they have.
Third, not all Deaf people are completely deaf. The guy in the video has a hearing aid, so that indicates he has some hearing. With a hearing aid, sometimes it's possible to hear a bit of what someone's saying.
It's not perfect, that's why Deaf people also tend to have a Deaf accent.
I know someone who was born profoundly deaf. We were talking a lot and I only realized he was deaf after he asked me to make sure I was facing him when talking because otherwise he wouldn't be able to "see" what I was saying. He has no speech impediment, he doesn't "sound deaf". Speech therapy can be pretty impressive sometimes.

As a disabled person, I agree with literally all of these! Some of the questions are so ridiculous and a few are just damn out of order.
I have 3 invisible disabilities and 1 kinda visable illness and I'm in foster care my case worker used to leave out I was disabled untill the families met me 4 years later she told me " no one wants a trans disabled out of control kid" I'm 16 still in foster care and her words ring in my head every single day
People like me need to spend extra time socializing one another and it's important to embrace our words. Sometimes, we focus on our Pros and Cons to take everything serious.

I had to teach my class for a lesson, so I asked my teacher if I can teach about this, he said yes and to my shock my class actually listened (they usually are always talking). My teacher loved the lesson and I loved teaching them about this because it interests me.

Yes! It's the worst when people think "you're a fraud" or something... I have a physical disability and almost always walk with a slightly limp, you can hardly notice it. But when I'm in a wheelchair and I move my legs or stand up, people stare at me as if I have three heads or something... It's so nice when other people get it!

So, I am multiply disabled and have been my whole life. For I just wish people didn't feel the need to belittle me. Or say oh you can't be deaf or hard of hearing you know what I am saying or I don't see your hearing aid. NOT all deaf people have hearing aids, they are quite costly, and do't work for everyone.
I normally hate things like this & I still do. You can't learn if you don't ask & if people are going to make you feel stupid, you're going to learn not to like people with disabilities.

i am disabled but not deaf . however i sign really well cause my mam taught me . i have a lot of deaf friends . i met a friend in the car park of our local retail park . we had not seen each other in years and signed away at each other . a bloke started screaming at us saying all sorts of vile things at us . i left my friend and started signing at the bloke . he continued screaming at me saying he had no clue what i was saying and it was pointless cause i could not her him . I then signed and said very loudly at him "NOT EVERYONE WHO SIGNS IS DEAF" the entire car park laughed at him . i felt great for the rest of the week . the world is full of idiots .

Yes, the "Oh ,you're so --------" strong brave, inspiring fill in the Fucking blank. I actually learned to swear because people were telling me how...I was and my life was because I can feed myself and navigate my own home. Worse were the people that thought my kids should be taken away because I'm different! I ACTUALLY HAD TO GO TO COURT at one point, in my wheelchair, don't drive, and the most un-amusing moment was watching the Judge come out on crutches, because of a sprained ankle and just Gawp at me. OMG. Thankfully, it turned out ok. The Judge came out and said that he had a ton of respect for me, because I was there early, and he drive a stick and knew just how miserable public transport was, he was late.

I think that when someone says "You're so brave" or "I think it's amazing that someone disabled is doing great things"... they don't mean it as an insult or to be patronizing. I think most people genuinely think that it is amazing because they aren't disabled. They can only imagine how difficult it might be. The rest of the things said to disabled people though... just ignorant. Ew.

I'm sometimes annoyed by constantly being referred to as "disabled" - it implies that I am "not able" to do anything that everybody else does, even though currently I am on crutches and can't do many things "normal" people do - which is another reference I hate. I am just as normal as anybody else, I'm not an alien from Mars, I just have a few health problems. I think "partially disabled" is tolerable, but "disabled" sounds as though I can't do anything at all. I know it is only a minor issue, I'm used to it and can even laugh about it - my mother used to always refer to me as being "crippled," that's the term they used in her day!
