- Brixham sailing trawler 'Leader' leaving Brixham for Dartmouth in an Easterly wind and heavy seas around 1000hrs utc on Saturday 18th April 2015
ENE wind speed 48kmh. Wind gusts 68kmh.
Wave height 1.6m. Wave period 6s.
WOW! Wouldn't that be the ride of a lifetime! It's ok for those who get to do it often. That swell's absolutely luscious, just right conditions, no lashing rain or far too massive waves battering the boat and breaking all over it but just a lovely glorious big heaving swell, just like being in bed with a gorgeous brunette with a huge heaving bosom! Why do so many complain about rough weather on cruises, that's what happens at sea, all part of the adventure, as long as it doesn't get too extreme.
Beautiful to watch a vessel in her element. This one is built for heavy weather!
thoroughly enjoyed this. No special effects, just birds chirping, some random chit chat, choppy seas and sailing!
I found the bird song annoying as I do not believe they were seabirds. Land birds singing are far more peaceful than screeching shitehawks (seagulls)
The men who worked on these boats must have been great mariners. Great to see people getting out and doing this - we live in an age of health, safety and insurance coverage.
Great days sailing on Leader, first class crew with excellent leadership skills, great sailing team, would go anywhere again !
It looks as though she's going painfully slowly but most of that is the foreshortening effect of the camera lens. She's going at a reasonable pace in fact, as you can see from the last few moments. Is that really an ENE wind? Looks like its coming from the SW to me, or perhaps I am disorientated.
Very well done. Thank you, JF
Spot on sailing. Right on the button.
A great looking sail
I crewed on her in July this year as part of a selection process for a training scheme, lovely ketch!...fortunately the seas were very calm...although too calm actually...we motored out of Oban then put main sail up but hit a dead spot suddenly. was a good experience getting to work the sails though.
Bollocks if I were skipper I would not subject the old girl into a washing machine best tap a keg o rum and wait for favourable seas maybe get a job up to help the old lass. Cheers n beers god bless us leader Marty Aust.
Fantastic video. I hope Leader has a spare bowsprit in a shed somewhere. Nearly lost it at 14.04.
Wow,great video.
Seeing as the camera came in for some praise in the video (and did indeed take an excellent film), what is the make and model of it please?
Needs more sail up to stabilize her - in 25 to 35 knots should not be any problem to have a working jib flying with a reefed main and mizzen. The boat will heel over a bit and stabilize as a result. There appear to be plenty of crew to handle the additional sail area. Perhaps the skipper was being overly cautious because he was unsure of conditions outside, but motorsailing carries it's own risks close to shore in strong conditions - it's always better to sail if possible. The boat and crew are taking an unnecessary beating here, and if the engine quits, they have a true emergency.
I don't think it's dangerous... I think she could hold off the shore on the reefed mainsail alone, and if not they could set more sail. Probably put reefs in the mizzen before casting off
yes, I was wondering early on "are those two going forward to get that jib working now? Hard on the rig to let it wave about like that."
@@jefftheriault7260 Stays'l not jib.
Skipper wanted us to go out under minimum sail: I'm the deckie in yellow.
she is motor sailing, not having the foresails up, very difficult to turn into the wind and around .......and it looks like they have a roller jib.....hm....more comfortable for them to have more sail up and get out of the short sharp waves inshore.
agree... maybe they do some exercise
How can you tell she is on motor? Shouldn't they have raised a black cone then?

Totally agree, all passengers quietly sitting down amidships suggests that it might some sort of commercial/charity adventure trip to experience some windy weather..
FlintF .... look at the cooling water backside.
I don't think they're trying to turn... Look at the helmsman at 7:38, for instance.
Great video
My Goodness, she needs more power. Maybe a staysail? See how she responds, add more if necessary.
Great video, Why I'd they sail ?
What's that about Force 6 on the Beaufort scale?
I've crossed the Channel in a LOT worse on Provident, I think this video needs to be given a different title.
and the phone camera was what?
Motertje zachtjes bij. Wat een was tobbe desalniettemin.
makes me feel sea sick just watching it
Why? I'd much rather go on a trip like that than go on some insane theme park ride, they make me feel AWFUL afterwards so I left them. And it's great to see the crew just taking it easy and maximising the motion instead of blasting it too hard and spoiling it.
It's alright for some, I wish I could've gone on school trips like that, instead of being made to go to stupid insane theme parks where I didn't want to go because they're absolute hell-holes. And those who went on that trip in this vid were complaining about it and huddling together amidships, if I'd been on it I'd want to be right at the bow where I could feel the glorious heaving swell to the maximum!
LIke in the good old days, but they need more sail to speed up..
Built by my great great great grandfather.
Not the best seamanship, better to add reefed mizzen and some head sail, enough canvas to heel the vessel and give her some stability.
~~ Nice, LIKE*
Shiver me timbers.....☠
She is under power not sail,
motoring with no jib
That's not sailing!
