The thing a lot of people don't understand about Goodwill is that it hires people who are trying to better their lives from what it was. People who have been in trouble with the law. Those who were involved with alcohol and drug abuse but have gone through rehab often Court ordered are given jobs and monitored on their progress. They usually start at the bottom and build themselves up to a higher level by attending training classes and on merit. The money they collect for items goes to these peoples salary. There is also schooling in other areas for repair of some items that come through the stores. I've known a few people who have gone through some of these stores. The difference and turn around in them is very noticeable. So yes it is a business but it is also a human help program.

Yeah, that's the picture they like to paint to the public. The reality of it is that they exploit those people with what amounts to slave labor. They hire mentally handicapped people and literally pay them less than one dollar an hour. This is all legal because the laws our country and most of our states have on the matter are severely outdated. Now, this might not be that much of an issue were it not for the fact that Goodwill is a giant corporation with a corporate structure that includes a top echelon of corporate bigwigs that makes millions and millions of dollars a year by exploiting those people. I'm 37 years old and I've been going to Goodwill since I can remember. When I was a kid their prices were fully reflective of the fact that they were getting ALL of their inventory for free. Now they simply take advantage. Selling decent used goods to poor people at prices they could afford was not only the point of their store, but the point of thrift stores in general. When I see Goodwill selling a Gibson for 5 figures or more, all I can think of is "How often do those guitars come from ignorant people that don't realize their value who could probably use that 5 figure sum A LOT MORE than the Goodwill Corporation?". If I was working at a Goodwill and I saw someone trying to donate a Gibson or other valuable vintage instrument, you bet your ass I'd tell them what it's really worth and who their 'donation' is going to benefit ultimately. It's not at all uncommon for a regional Goodwill CEO to make more than half a million dollars a year. Non-profit my

the people who have been in trouble with the law are sentenced to do community service there. Davidson County Court system sends them plenty of free labor. a friend of mine had his house to burn down Christmas Morning and I took him to goodwill and they said they didn't give people clothing. I took him from there to Salvation Army, and they gave him enough clothing and shoes to get him by.

@@solaris70 my aunt had married a man years back after he went through rehab and took a job at good will working his way up the ladder. Also getting involved with a Christian organization through them. Same thing has transpired with a couple of friends of several years. These people if they have the drive are trained in business to become management if the desire or what ever level of employment they desire. It may depend on location but I've seen it to many times . Known several who have been able to transform themselves with the aid of Good Will. They never claimed to be selling strictly to benefit charities but they do work on bettering their employees lives if they choose it. No not every employee has the drive and are only clerk material for stores outside of Good Will. But my aunts husband did assume a management position at another business other than market chains and is doing well in his position there. So your assumption that I'm wrong is Ill founded.

DUDE! I have that IYV! The only difference is mine has these neat wooden pickups on it. It's heavy, it's dense, and it sounds great! Fully hollow, no center block, so hang on tight if you're putting any effects on it! Far from flawless close up, it still commands attention.
I call mine The Beast, bought it from a local builder, and seller of cheap Chinese guitars that he mods and fixes up. He carved the bracing a bit to lighten it up some.
It is my main living room guitar, and I typically learn all my songs on that one accoustically before going into my guitar room to play my electrics.
It is currently in DADGAD tuning, which suits it quite nicely.

No doubt someone pointed this out to you, Austin: "technically" this is NOT a Les Paul. SG Special's NEVER had Les Paul tags. The Standard did, the Junior did, but the SG Special never did. A guitarist I know has a 1960 SG Special, one of the first ones ever built. Unfortunately the guitar has been modded with a batwing pickguard and humbuckers, so it doen't look like an SG Special any longer, but he has pictures to prove the guitar originally was a 1960 SG Special.

I've got a '58 ES-125 with a label inside the bass side f-hole: "Durdel's Stars of Tomorrow Studio - Toledo, Ohio". Got it online thru GC and immediately contacted the shop- still in business and delighted to hear from me - that stuff is pure magic.

The Arondite series appeared in the Ibanez 2007 catalog & I think that was all. There were 3 models, clearly inspired by a classic; an explorer, an iceman and a les paul. Mahogany, set necks, nice inlays, higher output pick-ups and subtle binding are winners in my book. I think they're under-rated, managed to track one down a couple years back and I'm so glad I bought it.
I got the Les Paul version because it's the least "out there" of the three and has the best inlays (abalone stars).

Goodwill has been totally found out. It’s basically eBay at this point, because the people listing the donations know what they have. I still have mixed feelings about Goodwill making so much money on this stuff. Is it even legal for a nonprofit company like them to be profiting so much off of peoples “Goodwill?” They have been making millions more dollars since they have been auctioning off their donations.

    • @TXCrafts1

The difference between Goodwill and ebay at this point is that at least with ebay I have some idea of what I am buying and you have direct contact with the seller. Goodwill doesn't have that and almost every instrument I have bought from them has had some undisclosed damage and getting in contact with customer support is a nightmare.

Goodwill does more than you think. The money its thrift stores make goes towards community programs like job training, placement services, and classes for people who have disabilities or are otherwise challenged in finding traditional employment. Goodwill provides free job training and career coaching to people with disabilities and disadvantages, as well as their own retail associates. All of that cost money. Most stores sell the items given to that particular store from the surrounding community. Do your research before throwing someone or an organization under the bus….

There are quite a few people out there making their full time job and living off scoring cheap things at Goodwill stores and others to flip in their own shops or ebay. Mainly gaming stuff/electronics, cookware, vintage and designer brand clothing, toys, antiques, etc. You definitely have to have an eye and know your stuff better than they do.

What wrong headed soul would donate a quality guitar to Goodwill ? It ain’t a real charity, it’s a fake charity, and they are getting rich off people’s ignorance !
