Asda co-owner refuses to answer Scottish MP over watchdog's findings on fuel costs

- Asda’s pence per litre fuel margin targets were three times their 2019 level by 2023, and the retailer deliberately passed on reductions to retail prices more slowly in areas where they had no competition, the competition watchdog has told MPs.
Appearing before the Business and Trade Committee on Wednesday, Asda co-owner Mohsin Issa was asked 15 times if he accepted the Competition and Markets Authority's findings, refusing each time to answer yes or no.

They bought Asda after running a string of fuel stations, they are well practised in milking customers for fuel, but his amazing refusal to say neither yes or no is case closed - guilty of all charges.
He'd make a good politician, he evaded every question.
same as Fishy Sunak
If only politicians would answer 'yes' or 'no' too!
They need legislation to be able to fine these bosses for not answering yes or no.
We should all call for a nationwide boycott on asda fuel garages as much as possible and prices would soon come down
Yes and their stores. They have really went downhill since the were taken over.
Agreed, every supermarket should be boycotted , think what the USA did to Bud light !
I never shop at Asda.
I don't shop there anymore, simple!
It isnt just asda though, every supermarket has similar fuel prices
Its been going on for years, with promises from so called ‘watchdogs’ that they were going to hold profiteerers accountable. They’ve got the motorist by the balls and know it, you don’t buy, you don’t drive.
Amazing how during covid they could hardly give it away as folk were confined to home.
Once people started to drive again, the price shot up.
No, you're welcome to prepare your own motorspirit, up to 1500 litres a year without paying any duties.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k Found the bootlicker. Surprise surprise it's a bot account too. And that's a bit like saying you don't need to use the NHS, you can do your own surgery. Sounds simple until you try to do it 🤡
He clearly means yes
We need to start having controls on costs of essentials in this country. This sort of avoidance needs to be treated as contempt and tgere should be a prison term for not answering a simple question. Sick to death of lying scum getting away with lying and gaslighting.
Petrol stations have been price gouging and when the goverment gave a 5p cut petrol stations didn't pass that on to motorist's.
Never got a 5p cut here mate.
Got a 15-30p increase
His replies are very enriching
A desperate but normally honest man goes into a supermarket and steals a loaf of bread to feed his children. He is caught and prosecuted - ordered to pay £500 plus costs and serve 18 months in prison.
The CEO of a large MNC conglomerate imposes swingeing and utterly unjustifiable price rises on customers to increase profits for his company - he is given a huge multi-million-pound bonus, a knighthood and is held in esteem by the Tories.
When is blatant profiteering also going to be recognised as a crime?
Get your point, but no one ever got that sentence for stealing bread
I'm not condoning ASDA but what about the big 2 (Shell & BP) still price gouging customers. Everyone knows there's a back office Cartel going on, with OFGEM doing nothing, it's obvious OFGEM have been bought and paid for
Ive bought supermarket fuel for years but in recent months ive seen the local supermarkets ASDA Sains and Morrisons prices holding firm ,but seeing the big branded guys like Shell, BP and JET having lower prices than the supermarkets just last week I filled up on BP E10 fuel for 138.9 per litre when the supermarket in my town were at 142. & 143. per litre they are all at it but the supermarkets would appear to be the worse culprits just now because they are trying to milk the market. Our local Morrisons started allowing you to use your points car to get 5p a litre off fuel if you spent over £20 in store , so to counter act this fake deal the punched the price up to 148.97 per litre from 143.9 per litre. Obvious scamming.
I’m missing why Ofcom have a play in this? Was this about broadband or mobile phones? Did I miss that bit?
@@mollyfilms Hi, it was a typo error, I meant OFGEM. which I have now amended in my previous post. Thanks
Of course they have, and think of all the extra tax revenues, vat, the Government receive for these false prices in fuel. They are lapping it in.
"Did you deliberately triple fuel profit margins?"
"Erm, that would be an eccumenical matter!"
When he refuses to answer the question this number of times just shows how low Asda have sunk in the eyes of the consumer. Their standards have gone DOWN whereas their prices have GONE UP. Difficult to understand how the new owners can become even wealthier by selling parts of the company with huge debts then buy those parts back again with the same debt. Do they bank with the bank that de-banked NF?????
Asda are the greediest supermarkets in the UK, most of the their products you can get way cheaper in other stores. Dumpling mix is £1.40 in Asda yet is just 40p in B and M. Yes just 40p!
Alan Brown, SNP, politician who has been the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun since 2015.
Brown is the SNP Energy spokesperson in the House of Commons.
Where is the committees with actual teeth, that can hold these crooks to account? They're doing the exact same thing now with food prices. The little guys shafted again. It's fc## legal criminality.
Cancel Asda, simples.
I drive an EV and charge from home thank god. People like him need to be struck of as a director.
Why he's doing an excellent job at making money, that's the aim of business. Love it or loathe it, that's the capitalist system we live in. Greed is good, Marx offers an explanation of the exploitation of the working person.
@@skullduggerysmiles8393 You are correct, however you should look at the origins of capitalism and stated aims of business - i.e. public good, public service etc. The rank profiteering we see now is late-stage capitalism, and hopefully change is afoot (but I don't see it personally, the govt is unwilling and the watchdogs are toothless).
Why? He's doing what the business wants, namely making money for shareholders. The issue is necessary services being run for profit. If it's necessary it should be state controlled and run and cost plus necessary for investment in development. Let the marlet handle luxuries and trivialities.
@@flippy66 thank you, perhaps you should understand the principles of a free market economy.
Surely if they are not forced to give the answer when asked they should be fined heavily so as to incentivise them to give the truth and NOT be conniving and up to mad accountancy tricks etc liek all conglomerates and tac should be paid on profits earned in this country.
Oh dearie me if this had been a Labour MP it would have been shown in the title. As it is they would not want to give the SNP any plaudits for taking this guy to task. That is the shameful state of our media.
Think you missed the content? It’s the content and not the committee that’s the interest.
After this it's simple....avoid asda .....
The same question for big brands supermarkets food.
I hope they all had a nice lunch together.
Perhaps talking about how the sun in the south of France really eats into paintwork.
Those second homes can be a bit of a worry .
"We need to give up" ??? is the best you can do?? Are you just let him get away with it??!! Was there even any punishment??
The slimey character is an expert in working the watchdog as an eel works the water to get through. What a disgrace.
Why would he answer when there’s nothing they can do if he doesn’t. You think asda owners or any of them care about the public. They don’t and nothing will change by sitting them down and asking questions. Force them to stop ripping us off.
What a weasel. It's such a strange skill.
So.... that's a yes then, otherwise he would have said no.
They need to be brought to accountabilit. Give them a hefty fine
Answer the bloody question
How is this man running one of the biggest supermarkets in the UK 🤣🤦🏼♂️
This is called: 'A need to know only basis & I will tell you what I will want you to know & nothing else & no amount of repeated questioning will make me say what you want me to say'!
To me this speaks volumes about this Asda co-owner, GUILTY but not willing to own up to it!
ASDA
"Every little price gouging helps...
...us"
Replaced recently with an equally non meaningful slogan 'Get the Asda Price Feeling' 😂
Why is Asda still in Scotland. They said if Scotland left the EU. They could not make a profit. Weird.
It’s just greed
So, yes then. Can he not be held in contempt of the committee? I believe failure to present evidence when required is an offence of some kind.
Does any boss or mp ever give a yes or no answer
SUCH A DREADFUL HUMAN BEING ..
There's an endearingly machiavellian spryness to his confutation. He's a highly intelligent and assertive, but unassuming businessman.
Chav! He has never been to school. He doesn't understand what's going on.
Another Khan. Lies lies and more lies
Boycott Asda, simple, their prices are on par with Sainsburys if not more expensive on a number of things and their fuel is sourced from any producer. I wouldn't be putting that in my 60k car especially when there is no saving. Supermarket fuel have wrecked many a car with it's "just meets standards" ethos.
Just as well it's one of the cheaper models then.
@@PmashWATP to be honest it was more a risk to reward analogy, irrespective of its money value a family car is just as important irrespective of cost but more the point of using supermarket fuel has been gamble for alot of owners in the past with running issues common place but if there is no savings to them and these guys have moved the margins for debt servicing at our expense then sticking to BP or Shell with better fuel additive packages in their fuels makes sense for your car.
Criminals
He would make a great politician.
Asda are the greediest supermarkets in the UK, most of the their products you can get way cheaper in other stores. Dumpling mix is £1.40 in Asda yet is just 40p in B and M. Yes just 40p!
He might have countered with a question to the SNP MP asking the questions by asking tell us where the missing £600,000 pounds are? and did the SNP intend to come clean.
I am not defending the owner of Asda but most of the price of fuel is government tax.
The UK Electoral Commission say it's all accounted for and the police say they have moved on to checking what all expenses were spent on. Around 1000 items.
No charges yet.
Bullshit. These supermarkets have been robbing people for years. Keep your anti SNP rants out of the argument at hand. Are supermarkets robbing us? Simple question.
Where can i watch the full meeting?
It is a little ironic that MP’s are frustrated when they don’t get a yes or no answer.
The whole thing is a waste of time and public money, a parliamentary committee should have plenerary powers in order to compel those before it to answer all questions with complete honesty , if for any reason they mislead or stretch the truth they should be held in contempt and delt with accordingly, ie, unlimited personal fines or incarceration, i think under duch circumstances they would be only to willing to cooperate.
" it's a free for all " the rest is all drama to the public eyes
Its the only outcome from the fantasy of infinite growth. Prices will climb with no added value to customers. The 'free market' doesn't work.
Needs seeing to , but just another Distraction , the Government made £ Billions through these High Fuel Prices .
I stopped shopping at Asda as when these guys took over its nt as good and the stores are not as well maintained and look scruffy. Imo. Anyway l don't shop there now...and won't get petrol from them anymore either. Rip us off...lose our money.
THE IRONY… MP’S COMPLAINING THAT THEY CAN’T GET A YES OR NO ANSWER😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Many others are also ripping people off and the Tories love their rich corporate mates. Things will only get tougher in the years to come.
@ribblevalleyrover Everyone is out for themselves nowadays
He would make a good Tory prime minister
Tell us something we don't know....theives an vagabonds. Profit.profit profit.
Asda donates money to the Conservative Party. That’s why I don’t shop at Asda or Salisburys.
Stop shopping at Asda! Simple solution to eliminating greedy owners!
Asda is terrible
Not defending the billionaire owner. But:
M.P: Can you please step into this trap we've laid out, thought through and well rehearsed to make you look like the bad guy.
Billionaire: Sorry, I've been advised by my team to not to. I think I'll pass.
That’s a big fat yes!
They should of not brought Asda
What?????😂
Parliament has powers to hold people like this in contempt.
Just typical a Asian lining his pockets for profits and where is his brother during this ? At home cooking the books I bet
Thinks he in us not uk. Been watching ted cruise videos before this.
Another chap from the south continent not telling the truth!!!!!!!!!!!
Just try getting a yes or no answer out of an SNP/Green MSP syhster!
Why are you signalling out these parties when there are so many examples of other politicians from other parties that never answer a question. Your bias is showing and it’s really quite ridiculous. Never known any politician from any party that answers yes or no. Can you name one.

'Get the Asda Price Feeling'.
No answer prison
ASDA is an Indian owned company 😂
Maybe because they're teaching you how to run your own country/business right?!
Next question should have been are you happy we have given up asking you that question and class that as a win for you?
He should be a politician.
The blokes got all the makings of an MP,never answer yes or no always talk your way out of a direct answer

Don’t shop at any of the big 4 anyway. Greedy 🤬
This Issa guy is the worst possible advert for Asda. I feel sorry for the hard working people in my local Asda having this guy as their owner, having first been shafted and then dumped by Walmart. I've written to Asda saying Issa is a disgrace. I doubt I'll get a reply.
Why do you think rich people just get richer !
He's Indian, he probably didn't know.
I've shopped in ASDA for years but now I know who is getting the profits I'll not be back in the place. Kind of explains where the 50% price hikes have came from......expanding from the corner shops and mini markets to screwing everyone into the ground.
