- How to remove and re-install a shift knob on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS. I understand that Audi and other models are similar.
A special thank You to my daughter, Rose for being videographer and zooming in on all the angles and details.
Great video! Buttttt I have a 2002 VW Jetta and I tried this method for so long, and it didn’t work! Really what u gotta do is put it in 3rd or 4th gear so u have leverage and PUSH THE SILVER BUTTON IN , (not out) and pull the heck outta it I promise you I thought mines was glued on lol, but I finally got it the way I just explained ^-^ good luck
⬆️⬆️⬆️ he’s right
You make this look easy asf. I have a mk4 Jetta and do this with mine and the button not grabbing the rod
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, helped me a lot
Mine is a 2002 prototype according to the owners manual. The shifter assembly is very basic the head of the assembly attaches to the shifter rod with 4 plastic clips, and the actuator inside is spring loaded and is basically a button itself... had to break the silver part to remove the head though, it clipped into the shifterhead in such a way as to be unremoveable otherwise, but was just a decorative piece anyway
Amazing explain clear video thanks bro
On my 2000 Golf Non-Trip Tronic. I was able to Puch the chrome sleeve down by hand. And I pushed the button in and it came right off. The button stayed pushed-in until I re-installed.
Very good friend video it was a few months ago but this time very well thanks
Nice, just what I needed to know :)
Cool! There's more than one way to float a boat.
Thank you!
Hey man can you do a video on how to replace the plunger
I need to replace the plastic base to the shift area. Anyone know what that's called??
For the non triptronic version, after prying the bottom holder, it is enough to pull up hard to get the gear cover dismantled
Matt, great video. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked for me. I have a 2003 Jetta Wolfburg edition. I do as you did and get the knob to partially come up but then it stops and won't come the rest of the way. If I push the button, it pulls the knob back down. The silver cover over the button came out all the way and a single spring with it. I can now spin the knob all the way round, but it just won't pop off no matter how hard I pull. I also cannot tell where the spring goes. Can you help? Thank you
great video, can you please make one removing the shifter bezel
How do u fix that white thing if it brakes
Go to Pull a Part or some wrecking yard around you.
Hi can you tell how to adjust the reverse on the automatic jette transm ?
Thanks men
note: i tried this exact procedure and it didn't work -shift knob will not come off.
request: can someone please post a link that shows how to remove the shift knob from a non-triptronic mk4 golf w/ auto tranny? cheers.
Yea I’m looking for video That Shows Removal of the Whole Shifter Box The (Thing He Took the Knob Off) Auto 02 Jetta 2.0 Non
Mine finally came off by pushing the shift button in and pulled up, not at all what the video shows
Hello Matt, do you know how to take the chrome part off?
Thanks for the video! Does anyone know how to remove the metal part around the gear shift?
+Megan Wheeler Lift it up, it has spring clips that lock in slots. It is in pretty firmly in there.
It has clips on the side that attach to a plastic main piece underneath. It's easier when the plastic part around it is taken off, but as the other person mentioned you can just pry it out.
Hey Matt I’m very late to this video but I recently took off my shifter and I believe I lost the spring that goes between, do I have to buy a new entire shifter or do I just need the spring ?
sorry. I sold the car directly after this. I took it apart. but there has been a lot of water under the bridge since then. I got down with a good light and just took it apart. Just take your time and be patient.
The key pretty much have to do the opposite works in eny gear besides park , SACRIFISE CHROME PLASTIC STEM FIRM GRIP ON GEAR SHIFT PUSH BUTTON IN AN PULL UP
I picked up a shifter knob off a junk yard jetta and when I took it off, the button went inside the knob. Is that okay for that to happen or is the knob I got busted in some way? I don't want to take off my functional one until I know this one is okay to swap. Thanks in advance.
Dope! Thx King!
Yeah if you're a dog it's stuck when you pull the knob out to take the knob off and the knob is stuck how do I get it hunched up
I pulled the shifter button completely out 😢
i would also like to know how to remove that silver pise so i can slip in a boot
Does anyone know how can i rotate that white plastic that grabs on to the shifter? I want to install a new shift knob and it grabs on at a different angle
Hi, HOW TO REMOVE SILVER TRANSMISSION CONSOLE SELECTOR ???
Mine finally came off by pushing the shift button in and pulled up, not at all what the video shows
Anyone know the name of the plastic stem that the shifter knob connects to? Mine broke... I've been using a screw driver to switch my gears. Its a 98 VW Passat GLS 1.8L Turbo, if that helps. Thank you in advance.
+beats byIntel Do you have a Pull a Part or some junk yard like that? Go in take it yourself.Less than ten bucks. I used a dab of superglue on a skinny wood skewer to get out the broke piece.
+Matt Tucci thanks for the fast reply. Yea it's a lot of salvage yards and used parts dealers in my area. I just need the stem but these guys out here can "only" sale me the full assembly. I Don't think so. Planning on hitting up the yards this weekend. Thanks again for the upload and your help!
I've tried exactly what you did and mine won't come off
@Reflex Hello, Were you able to get it off? I have the same issue. 2003 Jetta.
@@nkarroumi Mine finally came off by pushing the shift button in and pulled up, not at all what the video shows
Tabitha miller i just tried again. I pushed in and nothing happened. I dont know if there is a trick to it? Maybe the car should be running? I don’t know. I’ve been trying more than a year. I think mine is just stuck!
I’m trying to take out the shift button so it’s just a normal shifter, is there anyway to do that?
Ya ever figure it out?
I wish I woukdve seen this before I used too much force to take mine off
Scott Winy . I feel your pain. I went to my buddies junkyard and tore a similar car apart to learn.
Going to try this with my 99 mkiv

I drove 300 miles to get an automatic 5 speed for $1,300. everyone around here wanted over $2,000. the remanufactured one was over $4,000 plus labor to put it in.
pretty cool but I wanna know how to actually replace the shifter knob on my 2004 automatic 2.0 L Jetta with a whole different shift knob thats more ergonomic...like fpr example the one thats on a 2015 Hyundai elantra...much better looking and easier to handle...any ideas or suggestions? thanks
did you ever do it? I have the same car and want to do the same thing
What is that chrome plate called where it says D 2 3 4, for the gears? Mine has bubbled up and I want to replace it but don't know what it's called
+Mythological Creature I think it's called the shifter bezel. I called it that at the VW dealer and the guy knew what I was talking about.
Could anyone tell me how to change the Automatic Transmission Shifter Cover Strip in flexible plastic?

How can I replace the rubber peice under the chrome? I bought a a Jetta that had it missing and the Tiptronic isn't working correctly
Ty White
problems with the automatic transmission?? better the manual??
Drive automatic for a month on daily basis, you will not go back to manual, it's just a douche attitude to say what you said and not experience luxury in relaxing driving. Whats even the point of having 2 liter petrol or diesel engine with fwd with manual shifter... and you don't need to have manual to have fun. I had the same thoughts on automatics before I drowe them for a while my mind has totally changed and I will probably preffer auto for all my life. Its just a perspective of a man/woman which is affraid to make changes in their lives. And oppinions like these are just as a baricade for your self improvement. Don't listen to other douches who say oh auto is for woman or old persons, bullshit - every time someone gets in my car asks me how it is to drive auto, expenses etc and no bad oppinions people are interested in something different but are afraid to take risks, here are no risks automatic gearboxes are allready here for decades and they work fine repair costs only exceed just a bit over manuals but the relaxation and not shifting in traffic jams like madman makes it much more than just an old persons gearbox...
The button won't come out at all. Mk4 04 jetta
yeah, i have the same problem with my passat '99 B5. The button just won't move out.
@@rewjik7998 i've looked at other sources and videos. some push the button in then pull. im gonna look for a owners manual online
Mine is stuck in 2nd gear help me
You may have an electrical problem. It sounds like it is in limp mode maybe.
No it the shifting cable came off of the transmission I need a clamp from a story to fix it I put it in park with my hand and brook the computer light board for tell me it I am in wrong but good thing odometer works fine
Is an analog of problem I threw it in the park to fast
I treat my car Like there a old beater
My knob comes off no matter what gear it's in, with as little effort as pulling up.
I am blessed to know that.
I didn't ask for your opinion , as small as it is. Your shifter is broke and I could care what you think or do.
You are obviously to stupid to look up the correct topic. I think there is a video for that on RUclips, you should look it up. Have a nice day. Moron.
It's funny how little people do to help someone but when they have something arrogant to say they don't hesitate a bit.
In the first place my first comment whas serious and I meant you no ill will. But you pointed out you ignorance and now I think you are a putz. Go somewhere else. Try Volkswagen, tell them their manual is wrong.
Only in America do people get so offended so fast...
Girl vi
Too bad it doesn't work
zapp
This doesn’t work, at all. I’ve been trying for well over an hour and it doesn’t do shit.
