This was another special restoration project. This Oak Table was built by a man from Germany in the late 1800s. He used this table for his work as an electrical engineer following the Industrial Revolution in America. In this video, I will share techniques for restoring and refinishing antique and vintage furniture. Thank you for your support. Barry
I think the darker color is perfect for the age of this table. I love all the holes and nailheads and names drawn on!! Henry is smiling down from his Woodshop in Heaven!!👏🏼
I think Henry would be very grateful and proud of you, for the sympathetic and loving restoration of his table. The new additions will ensure this table lasts well into the 21st century and who knows? possibly beyond. It’s a practical thing of beauty xx
Enjoy the old furniture and their histories. Reminds me of my old drafting table from when I studied Architecture 50 years ago. I didn't have the cash for more than the sliding cabled ruler so I designed one that could adjust the angles with a folding base. My Dad and I built it out of some scrap plywood and 1x4., plus a lockable cabinet to fit under it. I still have them today although more to remember my Dad. My classmates were always checking it out and made some offers for it. It's past time to fix it up and use it again.
I loved what you did with it, the stain colour was lovely in my humble opinion and preserving the history the way you did was so lovely and respectful. The addition of the modern flexispot table may serm awful to some but I could see that it is removable at any time leaving the table intact at the same time when it's on it makes it a functional table as it really should be because by using it you are respecting the original builders intentions. Personally I think he would be very happy with what you have done xx
I love the combination of old and new. It's perfect. This winter, before Christmas, my goal is to cut my old IKEA solid wood dining table in half and raise it up to meet the level of my counter top to create a bar-sitting area. My apartment was always too small for the full sized table and now the family has shrunk enough, it never gets used, except for Christmas dinner and as a catch-all mess the rest of the year. I found an app that allows you to 'hire' tools from people in the neighbourhood. I found a circular saw on the app recently and have run out of excuses to put this job off any longer. Thanks for the inspo, Barry. Keep waxing on. I love the stories.
I love the stories behind old pieces! The stories draw me to restore and keep them too. Thanks for the tip on saving handwriting inside drawers with lacquer.
I really enjoyed the story that accompanied the restoration and modernization of the table. The table looks like it will continue be useful for a long, long time.
I love that you get the history. I think as we get older we appreciate it much more. I am telling my grandkids ( ages 2-18) about my parents and grandparents because when I am gone so is our family history
I love the story behind this table! But most of all your heartfelt thoughts on turning this beautiful table into one you can keep an use in your shop. I think adding the table to the lift feature is very beneficial for your work. The table turned out gorgeous and now can be used for years to come! It's always such a pleasure to watch your videos and hear your awesome stories! Beautiful transformation job! 😊❤
To me the top looks like slate. The old school chalk boards. This table turned out very nice and very usable too. You do great work Barry. Have a great day
German made for sure although made here in America. What a beautiful story and well narrated Barry. I think the darker stain and black hardware suits it perfectly. Seeing you’ve posted a video always makes my day. You give peace and calmness if just for a while in this crazy world we live in. Thank You for all your wrk that goes into bringing us great content 🇺🇸❤️
What I can say is that this professional table will never lose its function. It can be used for architectural project studies, visual artists' studies, cartographic object analysis and art restorers. If you are going to put it up for sale, I recommend that you place an ad on the notice boards of universities that offer architecture, visual arts or engineering courses. The return will be certain.
The addition of the Flexispot makes a lot of sense to me given the way you plan to use the table. I’d love to have a craft table with that ability to adjust the height. Neat that you kept the original legs.
I think it's gorgeous. I love the darker colour, I think it was a good choice. The grain of the wood on the legs and elsewhere is so pretty. Most of all, I love that you continue to find and share great stories that go with the pieces you find. I have some armchairs that were my grandmother's (born 1898) and then my mother's, (born 1923). I feel about their textiles the way you feel about wood. They have gone through two changes, and now face their third. Each fabric reflects the taste and style of the previous owners' era, but the shape of the chairs, their arms and legs, remain the same.
I agree, I bet it would make his day. I was also hoping somehow you would have a picture of Henry, but even without the picture, I could picture him in my mind.
I love the table. Ample workspace like this one are hard to come by without spending a fortune. Because of your channel, I am refinishing a very small dresser that my mother had when I was a child. She has passed but her furniture is being repurposed in my house and garage.
Well done, Barry. I love the table. everything before and after. Such a practical, functional piece. People, cherish the solid wood furniture made by our elders. Barry knows the wisdom of doing so.
A wonderful respectful and sympathetic restoration. Always a joy to watch and listen to you. Your story telling along with your craftsmanship always bring a smile to my my face, sometimes with a hint of sadness in a way. As always , you bring out the human aspect in each piece and make your work a special and heartwarming experience for us to share. Thank you
That table looks so wonderful after all your skill and TLC. What a fabulous idea to put it onto a height adjustable mechanism ! Love the stain colour with the black base. Love the stories even more. Thank you Barry❤👏👏👌👌
Another fine project ! I appreciate the thoughtful ,, respectful way you go about these restorations . Their history is honored as they are fitted for their new life . Well done !
Wow, Barry!! I love what you did in this restoration! You completely restored the table beautifully and then added the new base in order to make it more useable for your needs. VERY smart idea!!❤
You have such a way with words. You seamlessly tell a beautiful story while restoring whatever it is you are working on. It makes for a wonderful video because we hear the story and we see the restoration. You are so relaxing to listen to, and I very much enjoy your videos!
With all the chaos in the world these days ur videos are the perfect palette cleanser. They’re calming, I know I’m going to hear an interesting story and I’m going to see some excellent woodworking. Appreciate all the effort u put into these videos😊👏🏻💯
Brilliant Barry! You have such a sensitive , caring and gentle approach to your projects. I love to hear all the back stories and you have a soothing and calming voice to boot, A+.
Germans were/are industrious/efficient. Loved the clean lines of the table. Wonder if Henry’s given name was ‘Heinrich’ and Mary’s ‘Maria’; which were Americanized to fit into their new community? As always, LOVE the preservation work you do! 😇
My name everyone calls me is Boyd. I watch most all your stuff but I got to tell you that this resto is the best one yet, Barry. Really took a POS and make a usable table that appears just outstanding.
What a wonderful story and what a wonderful restoration/repurposing of a special piece. The story of the man who built that table brought to mind my great grandparents who immigrated from Germany in the 1890’s. They settled in NYC. During a brief stay in England on their way to the US my grandfather was born in London.
I wouldn't second guess myself over the finish, Barry. I think you did an amazing job balancing old and new; all while keeping the functionality intact. Personally, I think the addition of that fleximount base was a genius touch. Keep on doing what you do!
Thanks for the heart felt story and video. Great job on the table and I'm happy you've decided to keep it. Pre Congrats on 100K!! When i started watching your channel you didn't even have 10K. Be well and keep up the wonderful work and story telling. Cheers :)
Salut Barry, super belle idée, c'est un système génial felicitation pour ton travail de professionnel et de qualité .je te souhaite une très belle semaine et au plaisir d'un prochain vidéo. 👍👍👍🥰
What a beautiful written delicately edited tribute to this table, its creator, their family, and anyone who ever came to, and continues to come to this county to build a table, a family, a life in America. 🇺🇸 3rd Generation of Western European “unemployable” stock. ☘️ 🌈
Normally I wouldn't like changes like that, however when I was 17 I worked in a grocery store and developed back problems early on as a bagger. Here I am over 30 years later and my back is still bad. I can't stay bent over for any length of time without back pain. I'm all for this change, anything to save your back is worth it.
What a great story! Wonderful how you respect the items that you restore! Question… where did you get my shirt?!?😅😅. I had to crack up because I had mine on (same color) when I saw this…. 😂. Love your work!! ❤😊❤
As you were applying the hard oil finish to the top, it looked like old linoleum. I could see the surface cracks. Also looks like it may have been wrapped with an oil cloth in later years from the tacks you were pulling out of the under side.
Surely a practical German Greatgrandpa would approve of this revision of his table. My own heritage is German, via steamship in 1874. WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS. Celebrate their courage and industriousness, I would be scared to death to do it!
I can see why you did this for your use, but it makes me sad at the same time and I hate the way it looks. I wish you would have just restored the table and sold it and then used a modern table with the Flexispot legs. I usually love your work, so I’m not trying to be insulting, and I think you’re a great guy!
I’m not insulted at all. This upgrade has already made a huge difference in my shop. If sold, I’m not sure it would have been appreciated in the same way. The new base can be removed with 4 screws.

I applaud you for altering a cherished piece to fit your needs.

Beautiful results as always, beautifully crafted and beautifully restored
Absolutely beautiful. A labor of love. Thank you for sharing once again.

I really appreciate your kind words!
I love that you kept the table intact even as you upped its functionality by 100%. I hope you sent the video link to the man who sold it to you.
That’s a great idea!
I agree, I bet it would make his day. I was also hoping somehow you would have a picture of Henry, but even without the picture, I could picture him in my mind.
What a great piece! It came out beautifully.
Just perfect, as usual. Thanks, Barry.
What a clever update and restoration, Barry! Love it!
Thank you
You shouldn't regret the stain choice. It's gorgeous.
Thank you

No one will ever know what dear Henry got up to on that table, a secret sealed by time.

To me this table looks like an old kitchen table. When I was little we had a table like that also with a drawer. Maybe Henry had a large family.
Great feedback
You are genius for this modern upgrade while maintaining the integrity! Bravo
Great work rejuvenating and bringing that table, and its story, to life and to a modern purpose. Thank you for sharing the story.
Wow!! You really honored the history of this piece and blended modern practicality as well!! The original craftsman would be proud I'm sure!!
That’s the goal - to honor the past while making it useful for the future.
MAGNIFICENT job! What a sweet story and tribute. Love this!!!
Well done, Mr. Barry. Another stunning restoration

Wonder what was under that top? More oak?
Looked like pine

Một cách khôi phục lại rất tuyệt vời chúc mừng 🎉🎉🎉
Barry you never said what the top was, Leather, probably? You will use this almost everyday.
cool .... aloha

Sir, you are anything but an amateur!
Why not just buy a new table for your shop. You ruined this one
Not sure you’ve seen my workshop. Not much is new in there. Two slots in the bottom of the table ruined it? I think you had this video on mute
