Many of you have asked me about my oppinion on the bans of Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt and the Extortionist. I needed to think about it for a few days, but here you go :)! Please let me know in the comments what you think about the situation!

They not only destroyed the four cards…they destroyed the TRUST
that is the biggest problem with wizards, dexstar, exactly! they are showing too often that they do not give a f about their customers and they only care about money. they should earn money, they are a company, but there is a health and an unhealthy level of greed 👊🏻
After Magic 30th, we've now reached Wizards' next dumb decision. I wasn't expecting this until 2026 at the earliest 😀

This was a crazy ban. I sympathize for players and collectors who just lost a ton of value.

According to EDHREC, Jeweled Lotus is in round about 337.000 decks. Card-Market Prize of the Masters-Edition was round about 85 EUR per card. Thats round about 28 Million EUR of collectors value destroyed. Only the registered ones! And I still dont talk about the damage for shops. Mana Crypt is in more than 500.000 decks. Dont' know how far the prize will sink. If the loss will be 100 EUR we are talking about another 50 Million EUR.

first time i hear somebody looking at it like this! if those numbers hold up, this is truly crazy. i doubt, though, that there are 500000 mana crypts and 350000 jeweled lotus’ in circulation 🤔. that number seems extremely high to me. not saying you are wrong 👊🏻, just a personal oppinion. would love to check that!
@@NerdAndProudOfIt It's the official numbers of registered decks on the EDHREC homepage, that play Mana Crypt / Jeweled Lotus. Don't know if it could be lower because of dishonest entries. On the other side there will be many cards out there that are not registered, I guess. I own a Jeweled Lotus and I'm not registered at EDHREC. My Mana Crypt I have sold 2-3 years ago, fortunately.

Elder Dinger Highlander did an estimate 24 hours after ban. He did not include special prints of Mana Crypt and sealed boxes. These are real cards based on print quantity of each card.
$127 million loss in the first 24 hours when prices were down 50%. They will fall much lower. I would not be surprised if it exceeds $200 million.
I agree 100%. It sucks. I have an original Mana Crypt that I won't get rid of because I enjoy it and love the art. I got rid of all my modern stuff a couple months back, which included a Jeweled Lotus and a Mana Crypt reprint. They reprint everything all the time so its not worth it to hold onto that stuff imo. I put that money into old school cards I want to have and enjoy long term. Think hard and collect what you want to hold and enjoy long term. That way you're happy no matter what the value is.

For me who luckily didn’t own any one of those banned cards it underlines the statement that modern magic cards are worthless. sorry for everyone who lost money. Im sticking with vintage.
yeah, vintage is a great opportunity at the moment, markus, i agree. we still can lose money on it, but at least we have the cards we love 😜😂❤
P.S. I play all the sensitivity and banned cards in decks because I join playgroups with open minds. Rule Zero is crucial in any format, as WE THE PLAYERS can make our own educated rules and restrictions without the help of WotC or any BS Rules Committee. Why? Because MTG, like any other TCG requires the art of communication! That’s the main issue that WotC et al don’t want to promote within the community, be it for the sake of profit or power, as they want to impose an agenda. TCGs can end up being more woke than politics, when you think about it. Anyway, here we are again!
i think indeed at your own kitchentable you should and can play the game as YOU want. banning those cards never really made sense to me, and neither did shunning certain artist!crusade, for example, is an event that happened throughout history. why would they ban that 🤔.

Still have my original Mana Crypts -- not getting rid of them -- plus I'm still way ahead as I got them when they first came out back in 1995 or so.
I think this is a minor bump in the road -- nothing of the magnitude of M30. People will be upset, but in the grand scheme of things all it illustrates is Hasbro's indifference. Yoda only knows they've made larger mistakes.

yeah, i think this is bad. sure, people will forget, and the outcry is less than mtg 30, but it is bad nonetheless, imho!

i honestly believe that wotc’s actions over the last 3 years drive people towards other tcg’s! if mtg would be fine, fab and sorcery would not gain as much popularity as they do!
I have been selling my magic collection over the last year and trading it in for sorcery boxes. I just sold the rest of mine yesterday and got 6 more boxes.

personally i have been buying a lot of sorcery too, as you might have seen in all the sorcery videos of mine, but i still love mtg and i am very nostalgic about my old cards, so i have no plan of getting rid of them 😁👊🏻

There should be a Committee for cEDH responsibe for a banned list and another different committe for casual EDH responsible to advice on banned cards. Cards like ante or broken could be on both lists but the ones just banned should be just for cEDH. The philosophy behind casual EDH has nothing to do with cEDH

Wotc didn’t have anything to do with the bannings , they are likely to lose some money since they can’t use mana crypt or the other two fast mama cards to push product. If I’m not mistaken the mystery booster set has mana crypt in it as a chase pull.

After M30 stunt, some friends and I (we've been playing since the 90 ies) decided to slowly let go of our modern cards as we thought they would be all reprinted. Since Sorcery came out and we all started to spend more time playing it than MTG, it became easier to do so.
We kept our ABU/AN/ RL/ old foils but like you said , we always keep in mind that WOTC doesn't care about customers long term feelings. It's all about instant money.
Lots of people don't really mind/care about those bans (gAAAme PiEcEs!) but I do feel for those who did put hard earned money into expensive cardboard just to see the potential resale value destroyed.
Much peace to all and remember to only buy cards that makes you happy to own imho.

makes it a lot easier indeed to spend money on other tcg’s like sorcery! i think i spent more on socery over the last year than on new mtg over the last 5. 😂

There are stores that are buying back then if you bought recently which is really cool. Yea reserved list is the only safe place. Either that or vintage cards are the only place I am parking my money. Old cardboard has qualities that reprints cant touch. Even if they reprint Arabian nights or antiquities the cards still have inherent value.

vintage is the only safe space, i agree. unique and nostalgic cards. new mtg is to play, not to collect. at least for me. if they ever reprint the old sets, and i don’t believe they will, i still foresee a big problem, though. 👊🏻
I “was” someone who bought collector boxes for the enjoyment of collecting. Now I’m never gonna buy any collector boxes anymore they have lost my confidence.
I lost money but I’ve gained it back double because I have a big mana vault collection which doubled in price.
I feel for the others who are not like me who have cards that will see the side effects of other cards being banned.

I don't play commander and don't have these cards (except one old school mana crypt just because I love old school cards) but I agree with you regarding having some kind of reserve list for newer cards just on let's say art, framing- or foiling type it would be great for everyone. You would have kind of chase cards in each set, that would hold some kind of value. Even I would be maybe tempted to get them just form a collector standpoint. we will see what the future brings.

Completely agree with expanding the reserved list. Meanwhile, WotC has stopped receiving my money and I am buying Sorcery. (And similarly trading into RL or selling my mtg)

and yes, making sure new players actually can build a collection of some value by opening boxes and collecting recent sets, by expensing the RL in some way, would be a step into the right direction! 😁👊🏻

Some way it seemed expected on some cards but I learned alot from this. Sad about ppl sitting on CM displays.

I think if they would care more about their player base and would be more your „friend“ they could sell more product snd be more successful. They could have not banned the Lotus and Crypt and still have pushed new strong cards to sell more product in my opinion. Nevertheless we played Commander yesterday and enjoyed it. My collegues found the decision of Wizards a bit strange but then we moved on and had good games ;)
i honestly think you are right, thomas! if they would approach it more customer friendly, they probably would do even better than they already do!

With respect. You're misinformed about the subject. The commander rules commission is not a part of WOTC.
WOTC would have LOVED to reprint these cards as chases to help push sub-par sets.
WOTC is no doubt, pretty upset at the commission for banning cards they were planning on merchandising several times over.
I agree with everything you said, but don’t confuse the RC (Rules Committee) with WotC. They do talk to each other, but the RC makes the decision in the end. What Wizards did with the info though is milk the consumer for those exact cards till they got banned until the very end with the Mystery2-Fest in a Box where they included more boosters of the sets that could contain the cards that’d be banned a few weeks later… 😅
RL isn’t also exactly safe, but safer, I agree. They don’t need to reprint the cards, just make powercrept versions of them… so just buy what you enjoy and don’t go all in. Diversify. Try other formats. And most of all: have fun! 🤗❤️
as always, great and diplomatic comment, tutor! and you know me! i have an oppionion, as i feel sorry for newer players who are not able to build a meaningful collection, but my approach is totally different anyway. i buy because of nostalgia and don’t really care about the value of my old cards. and i certainly do have fun with mtg! 😁👊🏻

The only cards I’m keeping post premodern are the original box toppers and a few expeditions since these are the new Reserved List due to scarcity. Soon, I’ll unload over thirty post 1999 sets for cash and RL cards since it’s time to cash in. You can’t go broke if you take a profit and with so many post-2015 sets rising, I might as well unload the while I still can. WotC is a rubbish company whom I refuse to give it my money as everything I purchase is at market lows and from the secondary market. My favourite sets at the moment are Alpha lands, some Beta, BB and WB [3rd and 4th Ed], CE and ICE, Fourth Edition Alternative, Revised, Tempest [EN, IT, JP, and SP], The Dark [EN and IT], Unlimited, and the Urza block [in all languages including gold bordered cards]. Also, I’m looking at pre-1975 baseball and Sorcery. I have diversified my collection to encompass many avenues.
i understand your frustration and it certainly makes sense that you are going down that road, if you are unhappy with wotc! it also makes sense to diversify, adding other collectables and TCG’s to you collection.
generally i would not get rid of cards with nostalgic value, as you might regret that. the game is still good, even if wotc is not. but getting rid of everything with value you are not attached to and that is not on the reserved list is something i can relate to 👊🏻

I mean i dont play commander but lost some on Mana Crypts i was really happy to pull. Many players i know are nit going to be purchasing or pulling modern cards from now on, if many on the same boat then this might lead to another value protection maybe

Having a constant reserve list like you said would be perfect. Jeweled lotus would fit right in there, but here i am, staring at my jlo, uber sad, just having to buy one for 100
yeah, jondargel, it would be a good way for new players to also start a collection with some value that is a little more safe from reprinting into oblivion. jeweled lotus 🪷 certainly might be a fine candidate! 👊🏻

Rule Zero and of course proxies will keep Commander alive just fine.
The player trust in the Commander Committee just went to zero. I feel like most people were ok with dockside and nadu. The two mana rocks were a huge deal.

I bought a total of 32 JLs from 2020 years ago. I loved the artwork and wanted to make a collage in a frame. Sucks it lost value, but to me, i still love the card.

Just to be clear WotC didn't ban these cards. The RC did. And it hasn't killed commander it has shifted the focus back to slower more casual game play.

They knew. The RC said discussions had been going on for ages about those cards. WotC were aware. But all they are guilty of it using the time to sell cards and maybe try to stop the ban so the cards held value.

Wizards of the Coast had nothing to do with this banning. The banning is from the Commander Rules Committee, an independent group of 5 people who determine the rules for the commander format only, and are unaffiliated with WotC.

if you believe that wizards has no influence on these bannings and that they did know or even plan this, with all respect, then you are a little naive. 👊🏻

I've been trying to get rid of most of my non reserved list cards over time. I do play Commander though so I have been keeping high use cards and "slots into every deck" cards as some people say. So those cards got nuked. I've been trying to get people to middle finger the RC by starting out own format. Freemander. It's a ban list free Commander that has rule zero requirements before play. We can decide amongst ourselves what we pay and want to pay against.
If someone wants to play a real black lotus or power 9 against me then that's fine! Just as long as I know and nobody is upset if I play an emrakul or something!

i totally agree! play like you want and with all cards you have! just have fun. if i wanna use my vintage cards, why not. if you wanna build a proxy deck using p9 and play against that vintage deck, sure, go for it! as long as we have a fun game it’s all good!
i do understand players that are angry about paying 180 cards for a card and wotc nukes it to less then 50% of that a day later, though.

I know people are believers in the RL but I would also sell RL cards (except for the good playable ones like Duals, etc). WOTC will eventually come for the RL because they know it will make them money and that no one will do anything about it (and the promissory estoppel argument is not gonna stop them lol).
it always depends why you collect. i would not get rid of most of my old cards, even if they would drop to a low, because i just love the cards.
and they won’t go for the reserved list again. they bloodied their noses everytime they try. besides that, it won’t make them any money. it would lose them money. they can just print money by making new cards that replace that mana crypt, why would they ever touch the old one’s again and take any sort of risk, after the mtg 30 disaster?
MTG was a disaster not because they touched the RL but because they were ridiculously expensive proxies.
I know there are plenty of people in the Magic community who hold the RL to be sacrosanct, but most players just don’t care about it (outside of the handful of playable cards in it … and those playable cards are why it would make WOTC a lot of money).
@@MerpDerp-hz9ttlike i said, the rejection of mtg30 happened not because it were expensive proxies, but mainly because wotc broke a promise. like you said, lots of people do not even care about the RL, but i wouldn’t underestimate the impact on even current sales of the players that do care for those old cards. stock level did not tank just because a few old collectors care too much. if they touch the RL again, it would be disastrous for the health of the game. they won’t risk it for a few bucks they make of a few cards (as you said) in a one shot product, when they endlessly can print new cards not pissing of an influencel part of their customer base, tank stock value and get horrible PR. not even mentioning losing face.
they tried. they mainly wanted to earn money of those duals in mtg30 for commander and looked for a way to monetize the RL. they failed. why take any more risk and ruining the only stable factor in the game.

Everyone is fine with Nadu being banned . The other 3 are terrible bans
as many players spend a lot of their hard earned cash on the 3 others, it sure seems so and it’s logical that makes them more angry! 👊🏻
The company behind the game is not the players friend. Lot of people learnt it the hard way.
When they reprinted cards like berserk in conspiracy 2, it was clear for me and my playgroup. And wizards is getting more aggressive meanwhile.

Personally, I don't care anymore what wizard is doing to the players. I still enjoy the game with my friends, keep on cracking packs because I love it and of course keep pushing my vintage collection. Looking at the cards gives me such a good feeling. Value is important, but it's not everything...
@@omgitsdavid578same here, as you know! i buy boxes to play with friends and then buylist the cards to fill slots in my vintage sets. besides that i enjoy flipping through my binders and the nostalgia that comes along with that.

Yea it’s cool when my cards have value, but that’s not important to me, I’d rather everything be affordable like Pokemon and only special prints are valuable. Leaves a collectible market as well as a cheap route for us who only value playing the game
when wotc of the coast stops selling boxes for 500$ and collocter booster boxes are 10 bucks a piece, then it’s oke that all cards cost 50 cents. until that, i still believe cards should have some value so new players actually can build a collection that does not leave them dissapointed.
Fair point, but that’s simply why I buy singles and only pay big bucks for cards I need and feel comfortable with the idea of them losing value simply because I value using the card for fun more than it retains value. It’s not stocks in the stock market to invest in to gain returns, it’s game pieces meant to be used for a game. Any value the cards retain should be seen as a luxury, not a requirement. That’s simply just my opinion, I understand where you’re coming from, not saying anyone is wrong

Sounds more like trying to find any kind of conspiracy to feel validated. Horribly misinformed video and completely inaccurate to the actual situation at hand. The banning of those cards is fair. Fast mana has been a issue in the format for ages. These cards going help make the format healthier hardly kill anything.

and don’t you think some of the attraction of the game is due to cool plays that involve cards like the jeweled lotus and such? and why did they not ban sol ring, then?
@@NerdAndProudOfIt I think the outcry is from the following sources. One being those who paid money for the cards or traded alot for them or got them back in the hayday upset the cards potentailly lost value. This happens all the time with other cards whose value shifts and fluctuates so not expecting these to ever be touched seems kinda silly. Another reason is the classic mentallity of people not being told they can not do somehting or are resistant to any change. They like these cards, they like playing with these cards and do not like the idea they might need to play something else or make a change and adapt. Another reason is the Cedh crowd. The ones who look on what is meant to be a casual format and try to make it as competitive as they can. They do not like the idea of being slowed down. The reality is jeweled lotus, mana crypt and dockside were horribly designed. They should of been banned from edh ages ago. On no level are they balanced for the format and you can still play dockside or mana crypt in other formats.
As for the attraction of cool plays sure of course everyone likes those but the issue of a player starting with 5 mana on turn one, getting their high powered commander out before anyone can really set up their board and getting a utter crapload of mana with a simple etb effect that costs barely anything that is a issue. IT warps the games and can end them and decide a winner out of nowhere. Making a game less a game and more of a show watching the one player just plow through it all. Also edh is done with four or more on the normal but it also is played one on one and one on one those cards provide a insane advantage. There is still plenty of options for cool plays. There are plenty of mana rocks still and ability for impressive plays but now it requires more effort and slows down the game to allow more of a back and forth or a game as it was.
As for sol ring i wish it could of been banned but I understand legallity issues regarding it. They made the mistake of putting it in so many precons they can't ban it since that would not make the precons playable out the box if they did.
Honestly I useto play yugioh ages ago. I played it when it first came out up to the end of the synchro era and left after it. I am not joking or lieing when I say mtg is following in yugios footsteps with some of the card designs and fast mana. This ban helped slow it down but unless they tone down the cards design and take a breath mtg will become more and more like yugioh where you have op cards and short barely played games that last more then three turns.

@@MrCenturion13if you really watched it then you know i approached the subject calmly and i looked at it from different perspectives. based on that i gave my oppionion, mot more, not less. and the thumbnail is the reason why you are here, isn’t it? my channel is small and i mainly talk about old mtg, so it probably will never get anywhere. but i don’t mind, i enjoy doing it. views are irrellevant and closing in on 1000 vids after 3 years should make it clear that neither those nor money is any motivation here. if i use a thumbnail that draws some attention to a meaningful discussion, so what!?
