DIY one piece slimline wood pen

- If you enjoy pen turning, this is a cool woodworking project where I modified slimline pen and made it into a one piece slimline pen. I saw this pen that has been created by a few people on RUclips so I decided to make my own. I like the one piece look and feel if this style pen. It allows the pen to be a little thicker in the center which I like too. This is one of many diy crafts and projects that’s been fun to make.it's especially a good woodturning project for beginners and makes an awsome woodworking gift. I'll have more on the way.
One example is from Tommy G • Pen #2: Modified Slimline

Great, now I'll have a bunch of lil rings in my pen stuff that I'll never use or throw away lol
Great job Jake.
Probably great for pen turners who already make pens. Me... not so much. Got my lathe 3 months ago in December of '22 to turn pens and so far I've made dozens of bowls, including a 4 corner square one, plus candle holders, cactus pots. But no pens, even though the lathe came with a big box of pen supplies and lathe accessories. Kind of intimidated by the smallness, I guess.
Anyhow, a great video for pen turners.
That was an amazing feat to drill a straight hole thru the blank free hand. You sure impressed this old carpenter with that trick.
Great job, I've got to have a go at that thank you for posting.
Great job on the pen Jake and good explanation at the end about the longer bit as well an lengthening the brass tube.Regards,BobRJBWoodturner
That’s a great trick mate I’m definitely trying that one out next time I’m pen making. Good job.
Wicked good idea !
Thanks so much, great pen
Thanks! I'm giving this a try...
Awesome job on the pen Jake! The lathe looks like it's working great!
Thanks Donny! It's working pretty good. IT still need a little love though.
Great idea. Enjoyed the video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great work!!
Thanks!
Very similar to a video I saw the other day about a homemade marking tool. Very cool stuff. Nice simple project (assuming you have access to a lathe) but definitely gives a bit of a Wow factor when you bust out that hand made pen to sign on the dotted line.
+Matt Peterson thanks Matt really prescient it!
Thank you, I used your idea, and I made a pen just like the one you did but I did in Stainless steel with a gun metal tip, and looks good then I made one in aluminum. Thank you and have a good day.
Great! love hearing other people getting creative and giving it a go!
Well done sir. Im new to pen turning, Infact im turning my first next week and will post the video the following monday.
nice project, I need to get the long drill bit, I'd love to make one
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Darn. Nice pen. I just turned my first ever pen, this is a rabbit hole...
Thanks Willem! It is a rabbit hole for sure. I just can't stop making pens! . Finally selling a few.
Yes it is. I have been down there for 10 years.
i love it
thanks janigami
Good to see the technique I’ve been using for 20 years finally getting out there!
how do you change the refill?
nice video thanks for sharing.
just subscribed!
Great video subscribed!
Thanks Rag Tie!
I still use the fountain pen I commissioned to you make. I like the thickness of the pen you just made in the video. I may have to purchase another from you.
Yea, I like this one. It's a little bit thicker than a standard pen... It's a great every day pen.
First beautiful handmade pen that I've seen on RUclips.
Great project! I've been looking at trying one of these - just need the longer bit.
Go for it. I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome, thanks for sharing this. I'd been wondering if such a thing was possible, this adds a whole new dimension to those kits. I got linked to this video, and it got me to sub, now with Isolation I have even more to watch, lol.
thanks for watching. Glad I could help
I made two of these and I really like them. My only issue is they are extremely hard to twist to get the nib out. My wife and kids have a hard time using them. Do you have a remedy for this? Thanks for the video. I had given up pen turning because of the expense. Now I can make nice pens with the cheap slimline pen.
Hey Jake! Nicely done.... I’ve always been put pen turning as slim lines really make me made, Ive since found single barrel pens, and picked up the bug again!!
Halfway down this rabbit hole I stumbled on the modified slimline projects! Interested that you make your tubes longer..... do you cut them both longer, or just one of them??
I actually have one tube cut longer for when i am turning the pen. I like the pen a little longer than what the kit comes with. When I am done, i remove the longer tube and still use the brass tube that the kit comes with. I still have plenty of the transmission/ front brass to connect to the back brass. Hope that helps.
Hi, can you give me the name of your glue? Thanks
Thank you for showing was a very ingenious idea, thank you. Now my question, I see that you press the nib into the tube, is that the brass tube that you custom cut, correct, and if it is can you determinate the size of the tube and the pen wood kit. I ask because I will try it by making a metal pen. Thank you and have a nice day.
You can use the custom tube or the one that comes on the kit as long as the custom tube is not considerably longer than the stock tube.
Really like the video but I was wondering why you expanded the end of the tube?
when I cut the tube with the tube cutter it pushes the end in. I use the tapered punch to bring the shape of the brass back to straight instead of concaved. hope that helps.
What was that bubbling after you glued it?
so you mentioned all the woodworking places to get the drill bit. Would the local HD not have a suitable bit? seems they would be cheaper and should just be a long bit? I am new to this so not sure if there is something special about this bit.
Its a spade bit designed specifically for drilling that size hole. Woodcraft, Rockler and I think even Amazon carries them. Most brass is 3/8 so you need the corresponding bit.
what kind of wood is that please ?
Jack, would you please give a link to the brass tube cutter that you use to cut the blank tubes?
www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-1-2-in-Mini-Copper-Tubing-Cutter-48-22-4250/207005244 . this will work just fine
If i saw it right you only hade one tube glued in and removed one and assembled it with only one ?? Love the look of the pen but was not very clear on that pert of assembly. Thanks
that's correct. only the back is glued in. The front tube is pressed into the transmission so the nib, front brass and transmission are then pushed into the back brass.
How do you replace the refill?
You pull the whole assembly out of the front. Looks like he used the front brass, but didn't glue it to the blank. Also looks like he cut a shorter brass tube for the rear to allow the front brass to seat up against.
Wait a minute, how do you change the refill?
You reverse how he put it together. You pull out the Nib(?) and all.
Sean Kelley how do you pull it out of it was pressed in?
I have a 6 pound piece of 95% black ebony that's 8 1/2" by 8 1/2" by 2 1/2" thick. Have you ever turned ebony pens and do you think it a waste to use it all for pens?
I've never turned ebony. I know it's very hard though. I would try cutting off a piece and doing at least one to say you have an ebony pen.
@@Jake.of.All.Trades Still picking out my big tools yet as I just retired and getting back into woodworking. I have one of the best miter saws drill press and table saw but I haven't quite decided on my lathe planer jointer or band saw yet.
Can you refill it later? Or are you just stuck with the first cartridge?
I assume that as the front assembly isn't glued in place that you can remove the whole thing. It might be a bit tight but it ought to come out
you can take the front portion out and replace the in k with a new cartridge.
What is that initial pen kit? Tube, refil, etc?
I get my kits from woodturners catalog. this particular kit is the Artisan slimline type.
what kind of saw did you use at 1:10?
It's a Japanese pull saw. You can get them from Roclker or Woodcraft or Even Amazon. There are different styles. Mine is the Dozuki. I really like it. it just takes time to practice cutting on the back stroke.
Jake of All Trades thatnks for the information love the vidoes
Nice video but could do with out the music do not explaining what you are doing
Not first
Are all the people that do this mute?
