Strava (or whatever fitness tracking app you use) is a help IMO, because even if you don't feel the progress sometimes you can see it. I first started riding seriously around a year ago after a running injury and have got in to it massively, but the number of hills I used to have to get off and push on the steepest sections that I can now ride up and quicker each time is a major encouragement, to me anyway.
Great tips and well done. I used to avoid the climbs, but found I’m ok with them. Been building up on ROUVY. Build up over the past couple of months. And just did L'Alpe d'Huez.
You’re right about pace of course and keeping a power you can hold for the duration. I probs need lower gears. Currently using a compact and 32 is my biggest ring on the cassette. I’m lucky being down to 60kg. But I’m encouraged that I’m getter stronger. It shows that even at 67, you can still get stronger.

Another great vlog Katie im envious of that sun right now given its pouring down up North at present !! I'd equate the GRX800 to the Ultegra range in terms of quality of gearing though, i use the 48/31 on the front along with the front and rear mechs and then switched to the Deore M8000 XT , that 11-40 cassette is so good and doesn't require doing much to the bike, can sometimes get away without the wolf tooth. Also the 42 is good for heavy bike packing and big hills. Totally changed what i thought was possible for long distance rugged endurance trips. As for Dates, this sounds gross but it works, open the pit out, replace with peanut butter, i make batches at a time as can freeze - sounds grim but the salt and sweet plus the carb and protein just works. Great advice Katie and the ride looks stunning. I agree with everything you have said. Consistently riding hills is the key as is incrementally doing more and more. Noticeable improvement does take time but is so worth it in terms of improving fitness and allowing us to ride the very best of routes like the ones you are showcasing in GC. Enjoy the remainder of your holiday, keep riding and stay safe.
You are right about food intake (dates, flapjack bars, bananas etc) ; but even more important - take plenty of water ; as I learned when I climbed Ben Nevis last year (On foot ; although I did see some intrepid people cycling) Whatever way you do it, it's a wonderful feeling when you get to the top! 🙆♂
If you ever get a chance, work towards and do the ride from Paia to the top of Haleakala (Maui), sea level to 10,025ft. Total about a 72mi ride round trip (~36mi up with avg gradient of about 5%). But the views, feeling of accomplishment, and realization of riding up through and then back down through the clouds is amazing. Needless to say the trip down views/ease is a great reward for the work put in to get to the top!

I really do think your last tip is the most important, especially for folks as they get older and decide to ramp up their performance on the bike. Being patient and increasing your training load gradually and smartly, with suffucient recovery time, is so important to avoid injury and the dreaded symptoms of over training. I am the MOST impatient person in the galaxy. 🌌 So I speak from the perspective of failure in this regard. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Hi Katie, thanks for another video! I’m numerically challenged and would love a video that really goes into the basics of what all the numbers surrounding the cassette and chainrings actually mean because my Specialized allez e5 2021 has Chainrings 50/34T Cassette SunRace, 8-speed, 11-32t (Shimano Claris) and my Orbea Onna 20 has a Chainset Alloy forged 30t & Cassette Sun Race 11-46t 10-Speed (Shimano Deore) and to be honest I’ve not got a clue 😂
The basic rule is that a smaller chainring at the front or a bigger cog at the back makes it easier to climb. If you divide the size of the chainring by the size of the cog you get your gear ratio which tells you how many times you wheel will rotate for each revolution of your crank.
For your Specialized your easiest gear is 34/32 (1.06).
For your Orbea your easiest gear is 30/46 (0.65).
As an example if you were to put the 46-30 GRX crankset that Katie uses on your Specialized (ignoring other compatibility) then your easiest gear would become 30/32 (0.94) making it ~13% easier.

@Katie Kookaburra Did you ever do the Guayadeque climb, sometimes called the psyche climb? It is GC-103 starting in Agüimes (small street easy to miss just before you exit the town, coming from south). It is a long even climb, and sometimes called psyche due to that there is no real frame of reference on the incline. 9 km, 672m and 7,4% average
I have a minivelo that is not famously a great hill climber. I added a Rohloff and Schlumpf mtn drive. The old guy wants any advantage.
Get a powermeter and climb with power. Watts per kilo is your friend. If you're a beginner then start with 2 watts per kilo.
Example, you're 80kgs, so 80×2= 160. 160watts is your target power to HOLD the WHOLE WAY up the climb. Your power may spike up to 200 at times so just back off until you're back to 160 watts.
As your body and muscles adapt, increase your power to 2.5 watts per kilo then 3, 3.3, 3.5 and so on.
3.5 is a good cyclist (on long climbs)
Don't be afraid to walk if you have to. Just keep going up.
Yes! Gear ratios that real humans can turn. Crank length is so important, too. Looks like you're on 165s, which I find just about perfect for spinning up long climbs.
Another tip is not go full gas or go hard straight away as you risk injury and body aches. Best to do bit by bit.

Tip #1: When you buy a pack of dates and it says "pitted"... don't EVER believe it 😵🦷💥
That happened to me on a road ride! Bit into a pit on a pitted date. I remember the rest of ride I was distracted by my mouth (fortunately no breaks).. I now buy pitted so I doin’t guess wrong and they are easy to pit.
