Good on you fella. Seen loads of your videos. Very well explained. It’s a complicated hobby so even the best get caught out. Keep doing what your doing.
I was about to post a response on the other video questioning the conclusion. I have long since been running a bubble bar on one side of my 60g tank. As bubbles break the surface there is a gas exchange that somewhat equalizes the O2 and CO2 in the tank with the atmosphere. I believe that means that in addition to 'adding' O2, at times CO2 is added from the atmosphere to the water to achieve an equilibrium. My plants and fish seem to do very well. Cory's video would seem to conclude that higher O2 levels are obtained with extra surface disruption, especially with air inputs. KUDOS for admitting your error.
brendan oates 2 Still have MOST of their fins. Lol The Albino in particular had long caudal filaments that are no longer there. I didn't realize the Serpaes were nippers until too late. It's not too bad, but I don't recommend mixing them.
+Dan Hiteshew no, they are not good for long find fish, but they are so attractive with that deep red color, I am concerning a pair of angels for my aquarium with my African butterfly fish. that or some other peaceful decent size fish. any thing come to mind that fits that description?
👍🏼👍🏼 to Dan the MAN.. U do post out EXCELLENT CONTENT NO DOUBT ABOT IT AT ALL.. thats a good example what u're doing listen, accepted, acknowledged and admitted in a national posting, admitting u were wrong in ur belief in agitation and circulation theory. 👍🏼👍🏼nothing beats that-i have all my appreciation and admiration doing this. Love ur theories and learning fr u is the best.
Mate did watch your last film and what you were saying was partly right as I have that same set up you spoke about and its works well had no probes with oxygen in my tank . Yes it is planted ... So in my eyes you were right in what you were saying .. Mat ...
I e always made sure that I have agitation at the top of my tanks ...... I've just taken the wave maker out of my Tropheus tank and replaced it with the air stone and I've noticed a huge change in my tank 🤗
There is a natural 24hr Day/Night Aquarium O2 cycle, Higher in the Day and Lower in the Night. This is due to the respiration of all the living biomass in the tank.I have maximised the dissolved CO2 in my tanks, by not running Air stones during the lighting period, as per the ADA/Optimum Aquarium methods to grow aquatic plants, and using surface agitation only. But always run air stones overnight, every night.
Interesting stuff, Good to share info, I tend ( or tended ) to think airstones were a waste of resources. Why have an airstone bubbling away, when you could replace the airstone with a sponge filter ?, you still have the bubbles and the surface agitation. but after watching this maybe we should rethink.
I (just me personally) prefere at least some sort of surface agitation, moast likely by some difusor or Oxidiser. But I did not see much difference in the O2 levels, they go up but not that much.....
I’m curious what your current take on this video is a year later after you had an o2 crash in a tank due to lack of surface agitation. I run airstones in every tank I have. If for no other reason I enjoy the aesthetics of bubble walls. But I mostly use them to help lift debris on the opposite side of my tanks from the filter intake. It’s one of those things that costs almost nothing and can only help. A calm tank does look better imop. However I’ve found that for really good circulation you need to point your outputs at the surface to create a good undertow back to filter inlets. I’m no expert by any stretch and have much less experience then most in keeping fish... but what I have done is use common sense and using flake food I can watch how the water moves around a tank based on filtration setup. What I’ve learned is outlets pointed upwards going across Long side of tank with air stone on far side and Intake right next to output yields the best circulation. Even better then any number of powerheads or wave maker additions. This also promotes surface agitation by default. I’ve tried many methods changing them daily during feedings. Just to find the perfect setup. I’m a filtration whore, my fun is derived from finding the most efficient filtration to achieve the least tank maintenance. I even record readings on my tanks daily so I can see how every little change impacts my tanks as far as filtration goes. My test tank is a 60g with 28 cichlids, a slider turtle, 4 pleco and 3 clown loaches. Fishes range from 1-1/2” to 8”. Most are 4-8 “. Turtle is 8” adult. Overstocked is an understatement lol. From this there are a few definite statements I can make from the 6 months or so I’ve been recording daily events on my test tank. 1) pleco wafers or any algae wafer is an ammonia and hence nitrate factory. As is any flake foods and sinking foods. My fish eat everything before it can even hit the substrate so there is never uneaten food but I can record a 20ppm nitrate and .5 ammonia spike from just throwing a couple wafers in over a 24h period. To put this in perspective I normally feed 2mm floating pellets and record 2.5 daily nitrate on average feeding two tables spoons a day. Once in morning and once in evening. 2) air stones solve a magnitude of issues and create none. (Unless you have very sensitive fish in which they would be stressed by them) 3) tank circulation and filtration is best achieved by directing return line towards surface across long side of tank creating underflow back to inlet right next to output line. 4) always make sure you get no where near dish soap or hand soap when working on your tank.. it’s an sure fire way to have a massive tank crash and loss of bacteria. On a side note... many people say you have to strip your tank thoroughly rinse everything and start all over.. what I’ve found is through massive stone aeration, a couple 85-90% water changes along with filter rinsing (not Cleaning like we do weekly, monthly etc a much lighter version, and using tetra safe start of all things even found at Walmart.. (the single best bacterial supplement I’ve found and I’m a huge seachem anything fan mind you) you can correct a total crash due to bacterial colony wipe out in 3-4 day’s. I don’t think this would’ve been possible wo airstones and the circulation I’ve got. It prevented the soap from sitting in the water column and made it bubble to surface where it was easy to remove through a couple big water changes.. 5) water turnover is very over hyped and much less important then proper filter dwell time. Meaning in an high flow rate for tank size filter you’ll get better filtration with nothing but sponges cause it makes one solid sponge increasing time water is filtering though the sponge (like one big sponge. Don’t trust me... look at how most Big cichlids tanks are run.. most run multiple canisters and one is nothing but a water polisher with sponges and Polly. They don’t understand why this makes the water clearer but its cause the water spends more time per pass in the same medium.) actually filtering better. The 10x rule is garbage. At that flow rate you would need somewhere around 1l of quality biomedia per 10g of water to actually perform at best 85% filtration per pass through your filter. Slower flow with large biomedia capacity with powerheads, air stones or wave makers is 1000x better then 3 fx6 or Ehiem 2260 on a 125g tank. One Marineland c360 properly setup with focus on tank circulation instead of turnover will filter much more efficiently. In other tanks I run java moss walls like an algae scrubber which requires an airstone under them. These tanks although much lighter stocked run 15ish ppm nitrate accumulation monthly. They may be lighter stocked then my test tank but by most standards would still be considered heavily stocked.
Here's another link you may find interesting it's from NickMach007 (Brian) "Balance in the Planted Tank: Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen". I'm sorry to ask but since there's no reference for the video you posted and you keep talking about having your opinion changed... Could you give us your opinion? I just watch this entire video to hear what you had to say about air stones. But it's just a plug for another Channel.
So what are you trying g to ... SAY??? Are air stones hmm BAD or GOOD, ?? What is your POINT?? I HAVE A HEAVILY 0LANTED 73 GALLON TANK with 3 BIG discus etc. A strong FX4 canister. Great water flow. I was thinking of getting an air stone/PUMP! Bad IDEA??? PLEASE. REPLY brother.
Don't worry about it. No one can be right all the time. I was thinking about Cory's video while I was watching yours, though lol. You gonna be the live stream tonight? Starts in less than an hour.
I beleive that air is dispersed from the top serculation and under the water. Why can't it be both. I could be wrong. I'm going to take a look at the video from co-op aquarium. It takes a real grown up to say they were wrong. I'm talking about Dan when i say that.
I'm sorry but I'll need more to go on than that. (I get hundreds of comments a day, and I can't remember who's tank is who's) What other filtration do you have? What's in the tank? (I'd still say no, because I hate bubbles in my tanks lol)
+Dan Hiteshew so appropriate today. I was blessed with 2 days off... in a row. so yeah.. I went there this morning. I did notnconsider the butterfly effect. that's nice. I got so excited when I hit 666 subs. there aren't any real numerological milestones after that. ok, besides 2010 (space Odessy), 8675308 (Jenny's number), ...
Jef B 1111 is always a good one. People get weird about the time 11:11 for some reason. The woman that did my tattoos 25 years ago had the digital looking 11:11 on her forearm.
Dan, you da man! Honesty, integrity, and the most beautiful, natural-looking planted tanks on the Tube.
Thanks!

Cory is the man, and like you, he is one of the few that takes the time to reply to the comments and answer all questions. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. I'll surely try.
Really? Cory never reply to any comments. Maybe when he first started YT videos but he's hollywood now.
Your honesty won my subscription. Have a good one! Thanks for your knowledge.

well I just came here today and I think I will stay since you are willing to admit you were wrong, that's a hard thing to come by on the Internet.
Lol. I see no shame in being wrong. That's how we learn.
+Dan Hiteshew yeah, I will say I am spruced that your angels still have fins with those serpaes
brendan oates 2 Still have MOST of their fins. Lol The Albino in particular had long caudal filaments that are no longer there.

You the man. thanks for being honest that's what we all need to do . when were wrong man up,,,!!! and admit to it and we all learn from it 👍

Subscribed! It takes a big person to recant anything especially nowadays
Subscribed, wow someone who can admit they made a mistake and not blame other things is honorable
This is the first video I’ve seen on your channel. I have subscribed and will be checking out your playlists.
Thanks! I've got over 2000 videos, so have fun!
It stands to reason that in nature, still, or very slow moving water becomes stagnant, where faster moving, and better aerated water doesn't.
I hope everyone give him a thumbs up. .awesome Video thank you for keeping it real brother

I see you're still waiting for a reply.
Awsome, way to keep it 100!
I never had an air stone I was told that oxygen comes from my live plants and my whisper filter does a great job agitating the water
Respect

If you inject CO2, then don't use an air stone. If you don't inject CO2, then using an air stone is fine.
I have a two foot 110 litre tropical tank,I have two air stones and a fluval two internal filter is that too much movement at the top of my tank
It depends on the fish you have. Angelfish prefer calmer water, but others like a more vigorous current.
We have 12 neon tetra,a couple of silver sharks,2 plecos,4 gold pencil fish
@@robandjemking6641 Not sure about the pencil fish, ut the others will be fine with some flow.
i've always known airstones were really the way to go i just hate how they look and how your tank looks matters as much as anything
Yeah, I hate air stones too.
Is that a bunch of Java Fern on the right hand side of the aquarium shown?
No, that's Temple Plant.
Dan Hiteshew Okay well thank you, I thought it looked pretty similar but more bushy
Nicholas Breuer check out my Gourami tank. It's loaded with Java fern.
the video in the description isn't available anymore !?
I deleted the original video I shot, but I don't know if Cory deleted his video. (this is from a long time ago)
Don't worry about it. No one can be right all the time. I was thinking about Cory's video while I was watching yours, though lol. You gonna be the live stream tonight? Starts in less than an hour.
I doubt it. I have water changes to do. lol
Dan Hiteshew Don't we all? lol Get to it then. Chances are it's gonna go for more than an hour, so maybe you can catch the end.
The video link doesn't work
Are those serpae tetras or red phantoms?
Serpae (Red Minor)

So? Knowing what you know now after seeing the Aquarium Co-Op video. Are you more compelled to try air stones in some of your tank(s)?
no. I've never had issues, so I'm not worried about it. I hate bubbles in tanks.
Dan Hiteshew Hate bubbles, good thing fish don't fart then. LOL.
Michael Agostino lol
+Michael Agostino my goldfish used too!! LOL
+pia a lol
what s the name of them red fish ?
Also what is the name of the black fish with red tail and top fin please ?
The red fish are Serpae Tetras (Red Minor) and the other is a Rainbow shark.
hhhrrrmmmm does this apply to you recommending no sponge filter in my 5 gallon, or i should still not have the sponge filter in my 5 gallon?
I'm sorry but I'll need more to go on than that. (I get hundreds of comments a day, and I can't remember who's tank is who's)
What other filtration do you have? What's in the tank?
(I'd still say no, because I hate bubbles in my tanks lol)
lol, ill comment on your comment once im done with current video :D
