For a pop artist, he DID execute it quite well. Let's just be fair: his voice was, in the first place, not primed for singing pieces in musicals such as this. It takes a lifetime to develop a voice fit for musicals, and yet he carried it out with enough justification. That you can't deny.
Except he started playing the kid when he was young.
@@alanhanley6546 Yeah but he stopped doing musicals for a while. So his voice isn't fit for musicals anymore.
when you start by saying "for a pop artist" you loose me.
he started of as a broadway actor before he decides to do pop
Here's a 17 year old that does it better with no training:
ruclips.net/video/RCFRqGm5KmM/видео.html
Okay he isn't a Michael Ball, a Ramin Karimloo, or an Eddie Redmayne .. but this isn't a poor performance. I think a lot of people just hate it because he is Nick Jonas. He looked more like the young Marius than most of the actors who played the part before or after him.
I was quite skeptical when he was casted as Marius, because I didn't like his voice in the Jo Bro's. However, he PROVES here he has a theatrical voice within him. This is beautiful and I love it!
he looks young.....we'll give you that.
looking like Maarius is about 1/10th of playing Marius. Don't hate Nick. He's a pop singer who is not up to this role. Stop the apologies for him.
Eddie Redmayne did a better job than the guy who hosted the Tonys and is part of the Jonas Brothers.
Jonas wasnt a Michael Ball as Jonas wasnt "hammy" or so self important. His voice was better than, yes, Karimloo or Redmayne as Marius.
Tbh I don't hate nick Jonas as Marius. I think he brings a lot of youth and jubilance to the role. Not much of a theatrical voice, but lots of passion. I like him
In a modern day opera, you need a lot more than "passion".
I'm kind of annoyed honestly at how everyone keeps on comparing Nick to Eddie Redmayne and Michael Ball. He's a different person. He's not even a broadway singer. He's a pop singer guys. Would most pop singers stand up on stage infront of god knows how many people, amoungst some of the most admired and famous broadway singers and perform something like this? No. But he had the guts to do that. And he was good. Remember, he isn't broadway trained. So what if he hasn't got Michael Ball's range or Eddie Redmayne's raw emotion. He was perfect for this part, in my eyes. Marius, in my opinion, should have a softer voice. Remember, he's mean't to be lovestruck. Even though he isn't talking about love in this song, Nick's softer voice works well.
Your opinion. Mine is that Ball demolishes everyone when it comes to this piece. And hearing others sing it makes me wince and I can't enjoy it. I continue to give covers a chance, but they are all terrible in comparison. With that said I have listened to over a minute of this drivel I have to get out of here.
No right or wrong here, just two opinions...
I think that you have a problem with the way he sings it, you should just keep it to yourself. Being a technical singer myself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with his piece and he is a pop singer. Musical theater and pop singing are two completely different things with different tones. I believe he did a beautiful job on this piece.
Very well said
I'd just like to tell you that Nick Jonas is in fact a Broadway Singer. He is a Broadway Baby, if you want to look up some of his performances, he was in Les Miserables, Annie Get Your Gun, Beauty and the Beast and starred in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Keri Frank What I am trying to say is he is first and foremost a pop singer. But yes, he has performed in some Broadway shows. But he shouldn't be compared to the 'Broadway legends', that's all I'm saying
Nick is amazing in this. Also the fact he was 17 ! When he sang this meaning his voice was still doing changes. You can dislike him but you can't say he has no talent ! Very few 17 year olds can come close to this.
Ha I am currently 17 and I can sing this
It isn't as hard a song as you might think
And the fact that he was coming back home, in a sense, when he was cast since he played Gavroche in Broadway as a kid, is the sweetest thing.
@@andreweades6248 You are now 18, and, I for one, would love to her YOU sing it!
@@d.j.7069 why do you think it is so hard to sing? I mean if you want emotion added to the song? Done I know how to do it. If you want it to just be sung as some fancy operatic, done! I can do that. It's not a hard song at all😅 now if you want a hard song. Try who am I or Bring him home
When he sings "Phantom shadows on the floor," I just melt. His voice is amazing. So much better when it's used for theatre and not boy bands.
I personally love this. Not many people can do this, and he has an amazing voice to do so.
i know right his voice is beautiful
but the phantom faces part. I felt the emotion there
You guys do realize that Nick Jonas started on broadway right?
no i dont think he did...his first album was released when he was like 12
His first album, you can be on Broadway and not be on an album.
Yeah ...he was on Broadway from the time he was a child . In fact, he was Gavroche in this berg show . He was amazing .
*very
Yeah it's true, he did start on broadway.
i dont get why people didnt like this.. its i mean you might not like his songs but you must admit he did a pretty good job here.. i was honestly surprised at this. while i think he can improve his voice at low notes (or maybe its his vocal range idk?) but he sang it very well and with soul. people should forget their prejudices and be objective.
+Meryem Nazilli haters gonna hate no matter the reasons. I think he did a good job too, but well since he was part of the Jonas Brothers, people only sees him as a mediocre singer :/
+Meryem Nazilli LUHAN
I might add that it is NOT the singer who decides whether he is good or not - .it is the audience. Personally, I would rate this performance five out .of ten, at best. I have found that people who claim they are a singer turn out to be NOT so!
When I first saw this I was blown away. Nick Jonas is amazing
He's having trouble with the low notes. But still, it was a good one. You don't see pop singers singing theater songs very often.
Jhanssen Tan Nichole Scherzinger slayed Phantom of the Opera
Miley Cyrus sang "On My Own"
I have the bleach ready for when you get back from looking it up.
nick started on broadway!
he made marius sound very innocent and sorry and that's what i love about it
Thank you.
I hated every time he opened his mouth through this whole production, until he started singing this particular song. I love the power and passion he brings.
Our little Nick is all grown up ;) He did a beautiful job on this song :)
exactly, he just EARNED my respect
I can't believe it. But this is actually the best version of this song. Good Job Nick Jonas for Showing your talent. The cracks make this song more genuine. A man lost EVERY one of his friends in life. This is meant to be sung while suffering and not being able to sing perfectly because of holding back the tears. This wasn't meant to be sung without struggle.
Okay, I just got chills tbh. He did a fantastic job~
I have always loved nick, and I love les miserable dearly. I think he did a spectacular job on this song, this is my favorite les mis song, you can really tell the passion he has for this one. Good job nick!! :)
He sings this really well!
I believe he brings a lot of emotion to this role and his singing is not as bad as many people say, he has a wonderful voice and I don't think any of the haters could have done a better job at the age of 18. He was young, he WAS MARIUS. Les Mis is my favorite book and I think Nick Jonas was blessed with the physical features of Marius. To me, physically, he is Marius. Vocally, he did a great job and he could develop a wonderful musical theatre career.
P.S. This is a live recording. Keep in account the fact that all his recordings were usually studio edited. This says a lot about his talent. :)
This version will always have a special place in my heart.
I was pleasantly surprised at his voice. I love this so much. I didn't like his voice in all his poppy crap but he's pretty good with theatre.
+Angel Olusola “Squee” well he was part of the cast of Les Miserables on Broadway when he was a kid lol
He is excellent. So he's a pop singer. A very good performance. Glad to see the words so I can pick up the song. Years ago, Rex Smith was a pop singer and then he was cast as Frederic in Pirates of Penzance, and I saw he could really sing! There are pop singers who should be doing Broadway level music.
It's kind of dumb that people come here and say "wow he can sing I respect him now", I mean, he's a human being, isn't that enough for him to deserve respect? He needed a REASON to be RESPECTED?
The problem is when performers charge money to hear them sing, one does expect the performer to actually sing! Not many pop or theater singers are very good at singing, although they claim to be professionals!
I really liked him in that role, he showed that he has a great voice
scratch the word 'great'.
He's a lot better than I thought he would be
This is usually the part in the musical where I start sobbing
This is beutiful when I wanted the celebration of les miserables with him it got me started on listening to Nick
This is my favorite version
you’re not a huge les mis fan, are you?
He should only ever sing music like this. I would respect him so much more. This is very impressive.
French Version:
There's a mourning that I carry,
That weighs my heart down like a secret,
Alone at these empty tables
That my friends will never see again.
Here we tried to change the world,
Here we dreamed of equality.
Here we lit the flame for tomorrow,
But tomorrow never came.
From the table at the window,
Filled with the mad ideas of hope,
The children rose with voices ringing
And I can hear them now!
The burning words that they have sung,
Became their final wish,
On this lonely barricade at dawn.
Oh, my friends, please forgive me,
That I live and that I'm here,
There's a mourning that I keep in me,
When all our chagrins are dead,
As I see your shadows pass me,
I weep for our lost joys,
Alone at these empty tables,
Which you will see no more,
Oh, my friends, I wish I could believe
That you did not die in vain,
Alone at these empty tables,
I am no longer certain of anything.
Thanks
Honestly, I’m blown away. I was expecting him to sound like his usual “congested Adam Levine” self, but he actually sounds pretty good.
Stumbled on this right after watching the O2 Concert. I do think it sounds refreshing and I like it. Gives a certain innocence to it. Gotta give credit to the guy for doing his best and going out of his Jonas Brothers comfort zone.
Y’all need to do your research...he got his start from doing musicals...he was also actually in Les mis when he was little...so he was quite capable and qualified to be Marius in this production of Les Miserables
So if I played football at age 6 I'm qualified for the national team now? He got out sung by everyone on that stage. Even a dying Eponine have more power in her voice than Nick have.
@@darkiee69 he is trained and can sing musical theater is what I am saying :) he did just fine, I think we should be less judgmental especially since we weren’t the ones on stage, good day
I loved Nick Jonas as Marius
I have heard Gareth Gates, Rob Houchen, and Chris Mccarrell sing this and I have to say they put much more emotion into it than Nick does. To me this song expresses Marius' grief and isolation, and I don't feel like Nick does this
Michael Ball and Eddie Redmayne give the best performances of this, in my opinion.
Both versions are great but I think this one fits the character perfectly
To me, this is singer singer performing the song. Not Marius remembering his friends.
ZachNight I can see that
Great voice, but no emotion. I forget the lyrics because he doesn’t own them in the way that he should.
Yo, he was seventeen, and he delivered the best performance he could.
...or trying to
Nick Jonas was great as Marius. That he didn't have as powerful a voice as others is the fault of the sound people who can adjust those things. In his role as Marius he was one of the best.
After hearing so much hate from the other singer's videos, I was pleasantly surprised by this. Sure it's not as powerful/moving as the others, it's still a very nice rendition
I was pleasantly surprised. He did a great job with the song!
I know this is an old upload but as someone who sang and had vocal training I gotta day I was extreme impressed by his performance. Like OP below said he isn’t “the big guys” but damn it was great! I cried, lol
Beautiful song.
go watch les mis 2012. eddie redmayne does it so much better.
he was like 17 wasn't he? damn. everyone shut up, he does extremely fucking well. his tone is IMMACULATE too.
Incredible performance!!!! :D
He has a beautiful voice. This part is very demanding on any singer, as it spans 2 full octaves. Nick faced difficulties with the lower part, but he should be able to improve his low end with age.
I love Nick Jonas so much 😀💙
When I first heard him in theatrical voice, all I thought was that he did a damn good job and he put so much passion into this spectacular song. Even though its Nick Jonas, doesn't mean he can stick to one genre. no hate.........
Adore this performance !
wtf? this makes me realize it's been a while since I heard the Jonas Brothers :|
He has a man's voice! omg! Loved it
I love the Jonas Brothers, especially as a band but Nick really should sing like this more often! It's amazing!
He's personally my favorite version of this song
i hope you’re not a huge Les Mis fan.
@@laurenleigh407 I am haha
impressive, i must say that when i first learned that he was going to play marius in the 25th anniversary, i was a bit skeptical but after i heard him sing this, i am actually very much impressed, good job nick!
i love this version
it is so moving
"There's a pain, goes on and on." That pain is called throat singing my friend ;)
For the shingeki no kyojin people .. imagin levi singing this after his squad died.............The feels :(
Okay when I opened this I wasn't expecting this from Nick...like WOW Nick! you impress me!! Didn't think his version was that good!!
Anyone who can sing this very well is awesome so nick is awesome!!!! :)
I agree with you. I thought his vocals were so so when I heard the Jonas Brothers perform, but after I heard him sing in Les Miserables, I was blown away!
Same! Never thought it possible but I guess he proved us all wrong. :)
Don't forget that he started music on his own. And that "that boy band" was he and his brothers.
i feel like to most people, a man that can sing is more surprising than a woman. That means when a man has and amazing voice, it has much more of an impact.
Nicks voice has really matured. He sounded great!
i watched the whole play and it was s sad when i saw this song
Nick Jonas wasn't TERRIBLE in this. He can sing very well, it's just that his voice isn't strong for a broadway stage like this, and in the ensemble songs his voice sounds MUCH worse then it actually is because of the overwhelming talent of the other singers. I won't go as far to say he was brilliant or that he was the perfect Marius (Cause I just love Michael Ball) but he wasn't complete trash either. He brought a sense of innocence and youth to the roll that Michael Ball couldn't, which I really liked, but his voice DID throw me off when heard with the others. But you know what? He actually sings this song quite well, and I applaud him for making a great effort to sing this song.
Superb rendition, NIck!!! Bravo! Bravo!!!
Wow.. Good job nick .-.
😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 Omg Nicky Darling I just cried *80's voice*
YES❣💕💞
very powerful
He was in the musical, I have the version on DVD. 25th anniversary eeee
Omg amazing 😱😱🎼😊😊💕💕💕
I think he should work more on his range. If he does, then it would be easier for him to sing low and high notes. I feel he struggles holding the low notes, especially at the end of the song.
I did not expect this. It's amazing
This is better than when he is singing with Joe and Kevin. I was a huge fan a few years back, but this is better,
He's been in theater since he was 6 and decided to be in a band with his brothers.
He's never quit theater, he just took time off to do stuff with his family XD
this is so amazing
I wish that he sing like this un his music
This was pretty good for a pop/rock singer, but I think he would be even better now at the age of 25! :) Here he was only 17/18. He really has grown alot.
I'm impressed!
Good Marius too, nothing bad to say!
He is like Freddie Mercury. I love it I really do that's why I went to see it.
I am impressed! I have some respect for this guy now :)
Interesting to hear Nick Jonas sing theater songs. Not my favorite version of the song but it wasn't terrible at all!
my thoughts exactly
people are like he is not good not enough emotion shut up id like to see you sing this in front of thousands of people god man
Logan McGee I totally agree!!
That doesn't mean anything and wouldn't prove anything. He is a professional singer after all so comparing his singing to normal people is straight up dumb, HOWEVER his voice is not suitable for live singing and musicals because he is used to recording in studios and singing pop, so we can say he is a little bit unexperienced
You do realize that's a stupid argument. Of all the reasons why one might disagree that Jonas did a bad job, you picked "you couldn't sing better so you shouldn't say Jonas is bad". Really? You could at the very least bring up how he expresses the emotions, how he isn't off tune, etc.
if i’m a professional singer, am i allowed to criticize?
I really really like this version, even more than Eddie Redmayne's and he's a tough one to beat.
The best version uve heard
i hope you’re not a huge les mis fan
Wait....what?? Impressive!!
I love it ♥
I am so freaking suprised. I didn't know he could actually SING! :D
He can't!
He was 18 at the time, this is pretty impressive for that age.
Samantha Barks was 20 and made him sound like the disney popstar he is.
Gaaaah this is so amazing
..have you ever seen les mis?
Lauren Leigh this is wild that I made a comment 6 years ago when I was 15 and someone replied to it but yes when I’d made this comment I had seen it live twice and I have watched the movie several times as well. I still think nick did a good job esp for a tenor
I clicked on it thinking "Oh God not Nick Jonas" Expecting the Jonas Brother feel and then it started playing and... Shit he's good...
this was good but his phrasing isn''t as good as Ramin and his emotion isn't as good as Eddie, and i agree he does struggle a bit with the low notes.
why do people hate his marius so much? he's not that bad, and he has some really good moments.
he can sing but he lacks the emotion and style necessary for marius
i think i'm in love. man he's good at broadway..
no. he’s really not...
How did he go from this to what he does now?
What DOES he do now?
@@darthvalor07 works out
He did great. Quit hating.
he has a good voice but he totally lacked emotion in the live show. he was not a good marius.
😢💗
Honestly, he tried. Props. Not everyone has good low notes and his voice is pop yeah. But he tried. Don't act like people who know a thing or two about singing and say "oh he is bad" for if you are going to criticize him at least either do it constructively or use proper arguments "he doesn't have good low notes" is such a dumb argument. From hearing it only once here I can tell it's just the very limit of his deep register, hence why he can't do it much too resonant or controlled. But also, it is not his fault. He just doesn't have the register. I am a Baritone, with G1 to B4 and that is why I can easily sing this. I have the intended register.
