    Very nice "Duckbill" regular. Too bad the serial # tag is gone, but if you had time you would see the serial number stamped into the frame rails. The serial # would include a "N" for the narrow gauge. The stamping of the serial numbers are a little bit larger the the tag that was mounted to the tool box. Fenders were optional and appear to be correct. I think the "Wide Narrow" as I call them are the coolest of the cool when it comes to the "Regular's" and Farmall "F" series

  • @mattdillon4398
    @mattdillon4398 9 дней назад +2

    The serial on the left frame rail should show if it is an original wide front narrow tread tractor. The "duckbill" was a later feature and carried over into the F20s and F30s for a couple of years. The only thing that throws me off is the red paint. It looks original but Farmalls were gray until 1935. A dealer repaint maybe? On the fuel tank you can see a small rectangle above the Farmall decal. The regulars did NOT have that since that small rectangle was the number designation for the F series.

    Later they put a sign on it stating it was a 1928 Regular. Though that doesn't make sence for the duckbill steering. I had to do some reading up on it after seeing it, it is a narrow tread, same as the F20 that replaced it. Seems they were popular in some areas depending on row spacing and irrigation practices. A very cool tractor!

    28 regular would have been original with the open face gears on the steering. These were a bit brittle & were prone to cracking under hard use.
    The duck bill front bolster is a replacement but wide fronts are a pretty rare item today, and pricey when you find one.
    The narrow tread width is 11 inches narrower than a standard, and the wheel spacing on the wide front only matches a narrow tread rear axle.
    The rear wheels were called Texas style wheels.
    Many pre- production prototype Farmall regulars were field tested in Texas and the wheels were an early development due to the thick gumbo clay soils here in cotton country. Lister plows were also tested extensively.
    Thanks for the walk around !!!

    Dad had a regular. The cable brake steer wasn’t on it, so there was a set of vise grips that lived on the right side brake actuator rod. I never drove it, but my brother did. Rule of thumb was to keep the thumbs out of the spokes, especially when turning across the furrows. Pulled a two bottom trip plow.

    It may be a version of a f20 I have seen them with narrow rear end before. The heisler unit may be actually a underdrive unit to slow it down for pto work they were quite fast in first gear even

  • @bishopcorva

    Looking at that and the first thought that came to my head for the rears. Was: " That has to be a rice tractor. Rears that are in line with the front. Self cleaners that look remarkably like similar wheels found on tractors in like the Philippines and other places. Covered steering gear box, just screams Rice field tractor."
    Whether true or not is entirely speculation on my part. All together it's a unique unit that surely would tell a story that begins with: "Back when I was new..." If it could talk that is.

    I think the front bolster has been replaced with one from an f-20. Lot of other parts seem added later. Like fenders and the rear steel wheels. Patina doesnt seem to match. Was repainted red at some point. There were no red regulars. Only the dark grey and red wheels.

    Looks like a narrow tread regular that had the front bolster replaced with that of an early F20. Not terribly uncommon for parts to have been switched around in the last 80+ years. Was definitely an old repaint like the vast majority of gray IHC’s ended up getting sprayed red when they came back to the dealer on trade. The dealers also ran a red repaint special to give a makeover to the older models.

  • @SalisburySnake
    @SalisburySnake 16 дней назад +2

    The serial number is visible at 1:25. It's in the 65000 range, so a 1929. The wide front was not available in 1929, but apparently became available as a retrofit part in 1934, the same time it was available on the F-20. So I guess there's no way to tell if it's a retrofit from back in the day, or just taken from an F-20 more recently.
    A narrow tread regular is much rarer than a narrow tread F20, but most of both would have still been narrow front. The wide front for narrow tread is a holy grail part even without the tractor.

  • @geneard639
    @geneard639 16 дней назад +2

    I just got the feeling one of the owners saw some parts in a catalog and ordered them up to trick out his ride. The fenders appear far newer than the rest, the steering being so unique and enclosed attached to the 'Y' front .... I don't even think those were offered as options. Back then it was "buy my perfect machine! or go find some other". So.... was J.C. Whitney in play back then? I know Sears and Montgomery Wards sold a lot of tractors and farm equipment, as well as the old Hardware Stores.

  • @andrewklahold2880
    @andrewklahold2880 16 дней назад +1

    Those break cables were primarily used for, plowed ground , cause narrow front will not turn in plowed ground the front end would dig in and keep going straight,they used them cables to pull the break in plowed ground because of the hand breaks, just to say that when you went to make a turn both hands had to say on the steering wheel, so they made that cable system to pull the break for you,

  • @aserta
    @aserta 16 дней назад +1

    Like others have said in the comments, it's (likely) a narrow F20, my theory being that the owner had it respecced back at the dealer, given that it still has the original pulley wheels and bits. Regardless, very cool unit, thank you for the walkaround.

  • @ElmerSartargo
    @ElmerSartargo 15 дней назад +1

    Not sure if duck bill front ends were ever put on late regulars from factory. If not, this wide front came from an F-20. Or from later replacement parts for the F-20 series.
    The fenders appear to be right for a regular. Not many were sold with the fender option, or left on if they were. So when fenders are seen, they just look odd because few have them.
    I have seen similar rear wheels. Only being different by the lug. The ones I have seen have had the cross angle bars bolted on instead of the lug option.
    The mag may also be an F-4 from an F-20. Hard to tell for sure being covered over by tin for rain protection. But the rear of the mag appears to be F-4.
    The steering cables are missing, and likely because they really wouldn't be of much use with a wide front. Probably wouldn't be able to turn sharp enough to get much turning action out of the brakes.
    Cool tractor. Thanks for posting. Never the less, there is some rare features here.

    • @squatch253
      @squatch253  15 дней назад

      It’s just a manually controlled spark timing that does the same job as the centrifugal advance flyweights that I went through in the newer Farmall H on the channel here. In a nutshell, the faster the engine runs, the sooner the spark needs to fire in relation to piston position. When the engine slows back down, the spark needs to happen a little bit later - on these early tractors it was the operator’s job to manually adjust the spark timing to keep the engine running smoothly 👍

    The rear wheels are interesting. You mentioned bolt on lugs to the basic wheel skeleton type frame. That means other options could have existed for "bolt on" features. The problem is that I cannot immediately think of what other bolt on features may have existed for a skeleton type wheel. Perhaps other viewers may have some ideas.

      Yes that’s the problem with those, will boost the PTO and belt speed. A lot of these Heislers were a 1:2 ratio which doubled the speed input to the trans. So more for saving time running out and back to the field rather then pto work.
