I knew a guy who started one of the first regional cell phone companies in the Midwest in the 80s. He sold it to a company (somewhere around $6M but also royalties every year for the rest of his life) that sold to another company & eventually ended up getting swallowed up by T-Mobile. Last year his royalty check was for $3M. This guy drives an old 1960s pickup truck & wears Quality Farm & Fleet or Walmart clothes and lives in old mid century shotgun house. He won’t buy anything full price including groceries. If he can buy say a pizza for a $2 he will even if it tastes like cardboard. His brain will not allow him to spend more $ on a pizza even if it was the best tasting pizza in the world. I think people like that are the result of the Great Depression- either living through it or being born to parents that were scarred by it. This guy couldn’t stay married because his penny pinching was so extreme. The inside of his house & everything he owned is all really nice. He wasn’t a mentally ill man living in filth.
