    What about using both carbons. The high conductivity graphitic felt to connect to and then the activated carbon felt as a storage felt, instead of the metal conductor you can replace the graphitic carbon felt and have very little interaction like the metals would. Like oxidation or electrode loss through the charge-discharge cycles.

    • @cayrex
      @cayrex  5 месяцев назад +1

      That is right about side reactions of metals CC. But still to have good contact points on graphitic carbon felt you will neef some support. Because over the time the contact area (where you conect crocodile cable to cell) of graphitic felt will damage. Other variant can be the graphite foil for example.

      @@cayrex Yeah I am using the graphite sheet cut and I form a cake of carbon and binder to the graphite conductor. I didn't have the felts to use, which would have made it much easier for the binder to work with the cake and give it more support. My suggestion would be to use both kinds of felts but only use the cake on the finer carbon felt. What we have here is a hydrogen storage system. The conductive part of the carbons allow for electrolysis to happen and store that energy as in like a pressure that is released when you short the cells through a load.
      I found sometimes there is a natural electrolysis that happens if there are like copper foil attached to one side like you did. It's doesn't change the conduction but does change the electronegative potential between the carbons and the copper. If you can shield the copper from galvanic response between the two materials the electrolyte will breakdown and store the hydrogen and oxygen at the appropriate electrode carbon cake. This process is reversible and acts like a old edison Nickel iron batteries..

    Hello mate
    Could you use the covid surgical masks to do that?
    I think they would give very good results. I bought many for that purpose, to use them in the separators of the supercapacitors.
    If you introduce a stainless steel mesh inside those electrodes, I think it would also improve conduction.
    I have been thinking about using sugar to make carbon electrodes for a long time, using it as a binder, mixed with the activated carbon powder and then carburizing it in a microwave for example and in that way making a solid sheet.

    Man, hi, nice videos. If you want to make a battery that will hold for more than 20 years, you cannot pull it off with binders. The problem is that they desolve. What you want is nano-structured carbon. The very easy way to do this, is take an organic material and pyrolyse it (burn it under an inert atmosphere). Try it with tost bread!

    • @cayrex
      @cayrex  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! I am not a big fan of binders anyway🙂 all that extra process, weight, cost,... But you have some binders that can last for quite some time. But like I said I go most of the time with 100% active material

    • @BillDemos
      @BillDemos 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@cayrex Yes, 100% carbon (with a bit of doping for better conductivity and as a catalyst [Ni, Pt]) is the way to go. In the previous message, I was just telling you one of the ways to create a nano-structured graphitic electrode based on some papers I was reading. You can also pyrolise sugar to do the same thing!!!! You don't even need to buy carbon with that knowledge any more! Best regards.

    Wow, that's actually a lot of short circuit current for such a small active area and relatively simple overall cell architecture...just to be clear, there's no active materials like metal oxides or other functionalization in the activated carbon ? I will note that this bagged method for the AC electrode is very similar to what DK Jawahar (another YT content creator focused on batteries) does in his battery builds and he also achieves pretty high SC current. Anyway, nice video and explanation of basic electrode make up. Thank you as always !

      @@cayrex For what it's worth, here's a good example of his "bagged" electrode method, although here he does include active material additives to the electrode blend....he also has some recent videos on a compacted, solidified electrode where he uses pine resin as the primary binder.

      @@nlnl3464 Mhm, nice. Actually I am not a big fan of using binders for active materials if this is not necessary. That pine carbon rod can have good use for current collectors. For example I used damar gum for making current collectors and some inks and they last for some time. For active material binder need the amount of resin be much smaller, because to much resin can limit ("clog") the active area of the material really badly.

    In the case of a metal air battery how will the oxigen get to the carbon felt if your sealing the whole battery in the first assembly? Do you have space for o2 to circulate?
