Kiptanui had a beautiful running style and was the greatest steeplechaser ever. Unfortunately he didn't win olympic gold alongside his 3 world championships gold, and first sub 8min ever for the steeplechase.
In 1992 he was the best steeplechaser but got injured at Olympic trials. Athletics Kenya still picked him but as he was injured he declined. He would break the world record later in the year after recovering. In 1996, he was one of the best but other runners were also at his level and hence he finished second.
