Does Yeast Nutrient Matter in Mead?

- Today I'm joined by @DointheMost as we test to see if yeast nutrient really matters in mead. Specifically, we are testing how and when you add your nutrient to your mead. This test includes Fermaid and DAP. I did not use Fermaid K, although that is a reliable yeast nutrient in mead making. I hope you enjoy this video and let us know what you think!

I've used DV10 on about 40 different trads with at least 30 different honeys with different nutrients and nutrient schedules and what I can tell you from my experience is if you ferment a trad with DV10 in the high 60's fahrenheit and above it can give off bitter notes (especially in the 70's and above). So some of those bitter notes could be due to the temperature you were fermenting at. DV10 is quite clean in the low 60's and below with fermaid K in my experience. With fermaid O it has been more watery and less to my liking. I still prefer Lutra from Omega to DV10 overall because Lutra has a wider temp range it can ferment in without affecting the flavor and body in negative ways while remaining mostly neutral. I'm experimenting with White Labs WLP001 right now with 4 different trads fermenting right now so I'm excited to see what that can do fermenting at about 68 F which is what we do at the meadery I work at. It's supposed to be a pretty neutral yeast used in that manner.
Thank you, MMM
Cool info ty guys 🎉
Really Appreciate Your Video , Thanks ! 🤠🐯
Glad to See You 2 Back Together . Kinda like Brooks & Dunn . Together They Just Seem, Magic 🪄✨ . You Compliment Each Other . 🐯🤠
That was very interesting.
I always front load my fermaid k nutrients in meads and have not had a single rotten egg or stall brew since. I also use a drill attachment to really get a lot of oxygen in at the start so that probably helps too.
That BC belch. Exquisite. Exceptional. Excellent mouth feel.

Mais um video excelente. Parabens pela contribuição. Um grande abraço do Brasil. Venho testando alguns hidromeis com frutas
Have you ever made mead from coconut sugar? If you have, please provide the RUclips link, many thanks 🙏🏻🏆👍🏻
I haven't!
To reset your nose you need coffee beans in a paprika shaker and give that a sniff
What’s the point of using Fermaid K or DAP when you can use Fermaid O?
Fermaid k is generally cheaper. Dap is generally much cheaper
Some of us can't use Fermaid as they're not available in some countries. DAP is.
DV10 has a relatively low nitrogen requirement which is why it's considered a "clean fermenter" so not sure this was the best choice for this test, and probs why there was little difference between the samples. Also some yeasts [not DV10] can produce off-flavors in high-nitrogen environments just as easily as in nutrient-deficient environs.
Great premise for the test though a more dependent yeast might have shown you more.
Did you adjust the PH when doing this experiment ?
Nope!
@@ManMadeMead Good job on yeast choice then !!
Sounds a little bit random, to be honest, othern than it definitely making a difference. There hasn't been a pattern on what staggering does or does not and it wasn't like Fermaid-O or DAP was consistently better or worse... Don't really know what to do with the results.
With what they did I would say dap front load did best according to them, ayyyyyyyyeeeee 👍👍
waiot a second. Was DV10 used in all these batches ?
Yup!
DV10!!!!
DAP is illegal for commercial use. I've read up on the science as well as homebrew community's opinions on using it. I will have to admit the homebrew community hasn't given me enough reason to use DAP. If it's illegal in a heavily regulated industry and I have easy access to Fermaid - O I don't see any reason to do it. Anyone disagree?
Can you cite the law please. My understanding is that it's the urea that is the issue and per Travis Blount-Elliott's article on advanced nutrients you should be buying pure DAP with no urea. TBE method uses Go-ferm, Ferm-O, Ferm-K (which contains DAP) and DAP as a staggered feeding. I think it depends on the nitrogen in your ingredients. You just need to be aware that DAP (or inorganic nutrients) can't be used by the yeasts starting at about 9% abv, so usually you are adding it before/at 1/3 break. My understanding is that for low abv, you only need Ferm-O, and if you use DAP you need to add it early or you might miss the 1/3 break and then mess up your calculations.
@@lostsailor696 Well I feel dumb now. I thought it all came with urea in it. So in my mind when I hear DAP, I think urea. Thanks! 😅

I'm honestly surprised by these results
