- Originally, Onis were considered demonic and destructive beings. In Japanese Buddhism, Onis often have the role of punishing evil souls in the Buddhist hell (Jigoku). These creatures are seen as enforcers of karmic justice. Onis can symbolize the manifestation of negative human emotions such as anger, envy or hatred. In some stories, a person can become an Oni if they are overcome by these emotions, reflecting the human ability to transform into something monstrous under certain circumstances.
Despite their demonic nature, in some stories or contexts, Onis can be depicted as guardians or protectors. Onis, although initially demonic, are complex creatures that can represent both destructive evil and the power of justice or protection in Japanese tradition.
