Rabbit Wont Feed Her Babies?: The SR Rabbit Update 12-6-16

- This is a common concern for new rabbit breeders. They have a first time mom that has a little of rabbits but they never see her taking care of them and assume that she is abandoning her litter. In this video I discuss why that is probably not the case, how you can tell for sure, and a few things you can do if it is the case.
I had that exact concern. First time mama. My very first rabbits.
Never saw her go in her nest for more than 5 seconds.
It's been 48 hours. They're all squirming but I don't want to touch them or disturb them too much.
I started breeding rabbits about month ago and the only videos i ever watch are yours. Very informative and straight to the point. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I am glad you find my videos helpful.
These are good videos, for sure. I watch both SR and living traditions homestead. Both are excellent for rabbit info.
I'm lucky couse i have seen my rabbit feeding her young .
lucky indeed. I have seen it too but it isn't very often at all. :)
Slightly Rednecked right, it's al about trust and friendship with the rabbit .
☺☺
mine wants me to help her if they go the wrong way lol . i guess she really likes me \and is so tame and freindly due to living as a housepet when i got her .,... but prior to her house pet life she was a show rabbit .....
and likes her forehead rubbed
Same... I’m not helping someone who’s mom isn’t

Hi! So my i was surprised with 5 kits yesterday morning, i didn’t realize my bunny was pregnant. She had them on my bed squeezed in between my pillows. So once the babies were clean, i moved them over to a diy nest box (i used a storage container, cut out a hole, and placed hay with a soft t shirt and her fur pullings). I left them there over night and today they’re still alive and moving. my only concern is, she keeps pulling her fur and taking it to my bed. Im not sure if she thinks her kits are there, but i placed the nest box in her general area and i don’t think she’s going in there. she only fed them once they were on the bed and placed all the fur she had stored in her mouth over the babies. And when i checked the babies, 3/5 had round bellies and 2 of them looked kinda small.
Our silver fox just had her first litter of 11! She did such a good job making the nest. When i checked on them this morning only some had a big belly so im a little worried. This video put me a little at ease!
My New Zealand just gave birth three days ago and she’s made a beautiful nest. She only had three and the one born on the wire was gone by the time I noticed. They had a fat belly last time I checked, but today I just went out and they were wrinkly and dehydrated looking. I held momma on my lap and let the babies nurse until they were plumped up. I hope she nurses them because that’s stressful.
That does sound stressful. I am betting that she will take care of them just fine going forward. Either way, it sounds like you are doing a good job of keeping an eye on them and making sure.
My Bunny had 4 baby rabbits and she pulled Alot Of fur, the babies are
her hidey house with a bunch of fur in their, they were just born yesterday
and right now their fine, I havn't picked them up because I'm scared that she
might get scared or angry. I haven't seen her feed her babies but thank you for telling me
this. now I feel so much better! ☺☺☺☺
Thanks for watching and I am glad it helped. By the way, you can handle the babies, the mother won't care. :)
Wolfie :3 need help I was feeding the babies with her and she scratch her Baby's
But what if you have a rabbit that is not a first time mother that has babies that she did not feed and have no fat bellies and die of starvation? It’s been very hot here and I’m wondering if the heat could have an impact on her care of this litter.
Hi. I have a first time mom rabbit and she is doing so well . They are now day 3 of being born and I have seen her feed them twice now. She is doing so well .
How I make sure all survive what kinda milk I can give then
I know it's 3 years late but in case someone else has the same question KMR (kitten milk replacement) and goat milk are great milk replacements for baby bunnies that don't have a mom or got rejected
Hi. My bunny gave birth a few days ago and i went to check up on the kits and i noticed that they are pretty cold. I also noticed that the momma isn’t really doing a lot for the babies. I don’t have a heating pad or anything to help them warm up other than a furry blanket. I’m scared they’re gonna freeze to death 🥺 Any tips?
And is it okay to touch the babies? Will she still take care of the babies?
you can touch them and not worry at all about mother abandoning them. As far as warmth. As long as they are in the nest box and have plenty of straw to snuggle into, and mother pulled fur to cover them up with, they should be fine. If you are overly concerned, you can bring the nest box in for the night and return it to the cage the next morning. I hope that helps.
Praying my momma rabbit is taking care of her kits... she had them yesterday so I'm not sure... this is our first litter with this momma... but I think this is her 3rd or 4th litter. I'm still concerned. She didn't pull fur, maybe too hot?
So thankful for these videos!
God bless!
I have a female the first litter she had one well we only found one in the open couldn’t find any more it died it was cold and wasn’t fed second littler she made a nest with fur and grass they are apparently day 4-5 but I worry she feeds them or not I’m guessing she does cause they wouldn’t gone this far but she had 5 2 were taken by a cat I believe that was only able to take one because we found one under a log we put it back in the nest it got warm then later on she had a cut on her belly then worms got into her they killed her and I’m worry they got on the 3 babies left
Thanks so much this was my first time breeding a rabbit. She pulled a lot of fur but I never saw her go into the nest. The babies are three days old and still alive so I guess they're fine!!
Did they make it?
Yes most of them made it and they’re all sold now
@@galeh3232 thank you I was wondering if you knew anything about this I have 2 bunnies that gave birth the normal size rabbit is pulling lots of fur and taking care of them but the smaller one is not pulling much fur and sometimes I notice babies haven’t gotten milk (I look at their stomachs to see if it has milk) and sometimes it doesn’t so I have to grab mom and put her in the nest and hold her down until they get enough would I have to keep doing this or will she slowly learn
If it’s her first litter she might not really know what to do with them and they might die. Try gently pulling some fur from under her neck and back and putting it in the nesting box. You could also try saving some by putting some of hers in your other rabbits’ nest. You might want to put her into the box and hold her there a couple times a day and see if she gets a hang of it, but there’s not much to do. She might be feeding them when you’re not watching and forcing her into the nest box might not be the best option
@@galeh3232 she’s not feeding them at all if I don’t feed them they get very skinny and when I look into their stomachs their is no white liquid until after I put her in there
Hi my bunny have 7 babies 3 days ago but she does not feed them their bellies are flat. What I do is rub her down on my lap and allow 4 to suck then the other 3 it last for about an hour until their bellies get fat.the good thing is that I am home to take of them due to covid. Bless you.
I am glad that you are able to take care of them. It is a little odd for a mother rabbit to not feed her babies but it does happen from time to time.
I had the same problem, and did the same thing you did
Hi, my bunny have 4 babies right now but she does not seems to feed one of them and belly is flat. We tried to hold her in a close to trance position for feeding, but she wakes up as soon as the baby suck on her. What should we do? Can you advise?
Blessings hey guys Sunday morning I got up to feed her first before feeling the babies as I entered the coop she was standing in the box over them I just reversed and ever since she has been feeling them they look so big and healthy.
great help.. ill be raising rabbits and needing this kind of information.. your channell has been the best info so far..big help thanks.. i have 5 new litters and this vidio put me at ease..
Awesome. So glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching.
Excellent video. Exactly the topic I needed an answer to. Thank you for the great tips!!! I have one mamma that I have seen several times in the nest box and the other never. The babies are wiggly and seem fine. Now I don't have to worry :)
Hi there Chris. Sarah here from little ol New Zealand, wanted to give you an update, we have 6 little bubba's with 6 seriously fat tummies. Go Ruby!!! Very proud of her.
awesome. congratulations.
Here’s a question that wasn’t answered in this informative video. First time mum, birthed 5, made a small nest and pulled a small amount of fur. We lost 1 & had to clean the entire cage out inc her fur - I assumed she’d pull more - she didn’t. She’s feeding her babies at least twice a day - except 1 that’s half the size, half the weight, weak & wobbly. We’ve been supplementing this one with rabbit replacement milk on a syringe and keeping her warm when she feels cold. Also putting her with our other doe for a feed. However, the mother didn’t lick clean her babies, they still had after birth and umbilical cords attached on day 3 & day 4 until I wiped them clean. I wiped them clean because I thought they were dying, they looked awful. They look better now. Is the mum not licking clean her babies really a concern or am I the only one that’s concerned about it?
(tip) rabbits don’t build replacement nests if one is damaged or gone, just remove the baby bunny that didn’t make it, that’s the best thing you can do
Had 11 angora rabbit kits but 8 died at the first day. I think they all look too small and all born prematurely. Three are still alive but I doubt they'll make it alive tomorrow. :( so sad.
The best way for people to see if babies are getting fed :
. Look at there belly , there skin is quite thin you should see a white sack full of milk in the belly
Compare the size normally if some are noticeably smaller they might not be getting as much or no milk
If all else fails use kitten milk and bottle feed 😘
but everything this man said is right so don’t touch to much unless necessary xx
Thanks for watching. You are right, it is pretty easy to tell if a baby isn't being fed. There is usually no doubt.
I have a mother rabbit who is very aggressive towards her babies. She has thrown 4 of them out of the cage and one of those died already. It has only been about 1 and a half days since they were born. I saw her digging in the nest box right on top of them and was wondering if that was how they are falling out of the cage? Also, she didn’t pull very much fur so I substituted with some from another doe, was that the reason she’s rejecting them? They are also never covered in fur anytime I go out there even though I always cover them up again with as much fur as I can find.
I ended up taking them out and they are inside the house now. Was that what I should have done or should I put them back in with her?
My first litter was 14. I’ve read bottle feeding isn’t worth it. Should I supplement or let nature run its course ?
I am sorry for the slow response. Bottle feeding doesn't usually work that well (like you said). It is very rare for a mother not to feed her young so I would suggest just letting her take care of them. 14 is a big litter so it is possible that you will lose one or two. That is just part of raising rabbits unfortunately.
This guy knows whats hes doing . Great lecture sir!
Im a huge fan and i run a rabbitry here in the Philippines. Power to you sir 🔥💪
Thank you so much for the kind words.
Hi, my doe gave birth to 6 babies a week ago today and I am little concerned that 4 of them don't seem to be very big. 2 of them have nice full bellies and the others are rather small. A couple of the kits found their way out of the nest and luckily I found them and put them back. Would they have wandered because they are hungry. Should I intervene and feed them with KMR or goats milk or should I just leave it?
What breed are they?
My rabbit won't nurse or feed her babies. And it seemed like she just kept stepping on them. However i separated them fr their mother. I think what i did was wrong. I really need help and I don't know where to find KMR or goats milk
What makes you think she wasn't feeding them? They only feed them about once or twice a day and you will very seldom if ever see it. You might try just putting them back in with her and monitoring them to see if they look fat. As long as they aren't overly skinny they are being fed. I hope that helps.
Thank you!!
no problem.
I also did that but, it's so hard to keep them alive '-'
Phew! I'm a 1st time grandma so I appreciate the information. Now I Kno what to look for and do.
This information is priceless
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I am glad you liked the video.
I have a SECOND time mom who abandoned her kits. First go-round she did great. 8 babies in the nest box, only 1 random death around 2 weeks but she cared for them.
Now this second litter she had all the kits on the wire. 1 died. I placed them in the box (no fur pulled) and 2 days later she still hadn't pulled fur or apparently fed them. They were cold and 2 dead. I have no foster moms right now so I took them inside and I've been bottle feeding raw fresh goat milk and they've got a heating pad. I'll pull her fur and see if that helps keep them warm. We'll see.
But what do you think about the regression of a SECOND time mom who did fine the first time? Silver fox.
If you see the baby rabbits on the floor without any fur or hay you can pull some fur off of the rabbit and give them some more fur to build a nest to keep them warm
😊 also I am thinking about breeding rabbits do u have any advise???
@@Daesgamingroom yes for sure! Research a lot here on slightly rednecked's page!! He has amazing info in several videos on here.
Two of my does littered seven apiece on the wire yesterday (5th Sept. 2022) even though I had provided a litter box days before their due dates. Luckily I caught the first doe in the process and was able to save all seven kits into their box as they came along. I however lost one of the second doe's set but saved six cold and barely active kits. I went to check this morning and thankfully they are all still alive, but non of the moms had gone in to feed her babies. It is pass 16 hrs now since these babies were born and i was beginning to get worried, but after watching your video, I guess I will give us all a little more time and see. Non of the moms pulled fur so right after this message, I'm going to pull some off myself. I am a new farmer in Ghana, Africa.
(The profile pix is deceptive, it is my daughter's handy work. I am a 53 year old man.)
Sorry for the slow response. I am sure that all of the babies are doing fine now. It isn't uncommon for mother rabbits to wait a while before feeding. Glad to hear that you were watching and got them all in the nest box.
What should I feed my new born rabbits?
This is my 1st time raising rabbits. I have a nesting box the baby bunnies are in, when is the right time to turn the nesting box on it's side so the bunnies can "come & go" as they please?
Also, most of the cage flooring, is 1/2 inch wire cloth, and sets off the ground about 3 feet. There is a concern, of rats chewing off bunny legs, when they slip thru the wire mesh.
So, I will soon be adding a second partition of wire mesh. Chris, have you had an experience like this?
I have never had a problem but I don't have a huge rat problem either. As far as turning the nest box on its side, never had to do that either. The babies tend to start leaving the nest at about 10 days old. for the first few days I put them back in the nest box at night and then they can usually get in and out as they please from that point on. After they start spending more time out of it than in it, i just remove it. Hope that helps.
My rabbit is a first time mum wasn't a planned pregnancy. My friend was caring for them and let them out for free time and didn't realise she let a male out until it was too late. She's done everything to prepare for her babies and caring for them very well apart from 2. I am looking for advice as I never had newborn rabbits and wasn't planning on having babies. I am glad my male only got one of my females and not 3.
I'd recommend spay and neuter. At least for the male.
Hi
I just got baby bunnies and i don't know if they are getting fed? There is a lot of fur with some hay over them, but as soon i take it off they pive? I rather not touch them, cause what if the mother dosen't want to feed them then? (they are barrely 2 days..)
Give you rabbit a teaspoon of calf man each day until 10 days are over with, it will increase her milk supply. It could possibly be that she just doesn't have enough milk
Calf manna can be found at tractor supply or any hard ware/vet/pet store
You will probably never see the mother feeding but if the babies are lively and fat they are being fed so it isn't anything to worry about. And feel free to touch them. The mother won't abandon them.
Okay, thx!
Thanks my rabbit gave birth on Christmas night and she doesn’t go to them a lot more to her mate but she has a lot of fur fro them we haven’t touched them yet but my da smithy have a day off tomorrow and we might check them
@@lexyjohnson6421 yea my rabbit gave birth to five babies there so small and 🥰 I could cry 😭
same here i had 4 babies born on christmas night , but as of today their bellies look skinny so it’s hard to tell if the mom is actually feeding them
@@melaniesanchez7547 we haven't looked at our rabbit but you should touch there bellies to see if there ok if not feed them car milk or goat milk if thee mom is not feeding them milk
My rabbit gave birth birth to 7 yesterday but she is not feeding them sometimes she stomps them. I have to feed the babies manually by laying down the mom on the side. what shiuld i do?
What should I do my bunny keeps chillaxin by The nest box she will only go in the nest box if there's grass in it and her babies don't move very much
Hey what should I do my baby rabbit that's about 2 days old is literally filled up like a balloon I'm not sure what happened but the first day they struggled drinking milk but I managed to help them drink but their perfectly fine with drinking now, what should I do I've just made sure the mother wont let them drink anymore by taking them away and putting them in a warm box
It is probably best to just leave them with the mother. The odds of them over eating is very unlikely. You shouldn't have to help them out at all. The one rabbit that you described sounds like it may have bloat. Unfortunately, that is very difficult to treat in young rabbits. In older rabbits you can try to treat it with infant gas drops but young rabbits are much more sensitive and I am afraid there might not be much you can do. I wish I had a better solution for you.
@@Slightlyrednecked I've brought them to the vet and I've figured it out it was actually bloat as you said. Sadly most the litter died of the cause. But I managed to save 2 by putting them near a heater and it surprisingly worked and they haven't got bloat but don't think they will survive but I hope they will thrive and wont pass away hopefully they wont get the same cause as their fellow siblings. Do you think I should let them drink normally and nothing will happen ?Or I should just feed them a bit each day? Thank you for the reply ill see what I can do with the rest. Thank you
Mine just fed and it doesn’t have a fat belly it never does. It was born on Saturday, just one. It looks content but when mums around she looks desperate for food. I’ve asked on loads of forums and everyone says it’s fine but I just feel like it’s not eating enough.
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues. Honestly, if it is still active and moving around it probably is just fine but if you are concerned you can try to supplement it's feed with some kitten milk replacement or goat milk replacement from a local farm supply store.
@@Slightlyrednecked that’s what I’m doing I just haven’t seen my rabbit get close to her babies and that concerned me I discovered she had her babies yesterday morning I didn’t even know she was pregnant but I have been feeding them all kitten milk I’m not sure if she’s feeding them or not but she usually avoids getting close to them. I’m thinking of moving them away from her I’m not so sure if you can give me any advice I would appreciate it she’s a first-time mother rabbit and she’s pretty young.
Thanks for this! First litter for me and I'm stressing. They don't have big fat bellies, but they aren't skinny either. I would assume she's feeding them in the middle of the night. They are all wiggles and popcorn. Just born yesterday so.. we'll see in the long run. I hope in this case you are 100% right!
Did they survive ?
Hi Chris -Thank you for posting this! My question for you is I have 3 day old kits (mom is a mini holland lop) and they are warm and wiggly, but I wouldn't say their bellies look super distended or full. The mom (from what I saw) didn't feed her first litter (back in APril) so I'm fearful she may do this again. However, we're optimistic it was 'first time mom' syndrome. From your experience, should I attempt to supplement or potentially let them die again if they start to go that direction? Thank you for any thoughts!
First time mom and everything looked good for the first week - 7 kits born in nest box, lots of fur, round bellies. But mama was not happy and growled at me when I occasionally checked on them. At a week old they were leaving the nest box in search of mom. I wondered if they were hungry as this had never happened with week-old kits leaving the box. Still growling when I checked. At two weeks all kits died but one. I took him inside and am hand feeding him. He was very bony and scrawny but strong when I rescued him. Five days later he’s begun to plump up and appears to be doing fine.
Why would the mom stop feeding the kits after a week? Was it because I had handled them briefly several times? And should I give her another chance as a mom?
Thanks so much for any advice you can offer.
Probably not because you handled them. A breeder I recently bought from warned me about my doe. She's a good cooperative rabbit, but as she gets ready to kindle, she gets very cranky and defensive. Apparently she's outright hostile if she has a nest full of babies.
Hello... My rabbit is also a 1st time mother.. There were 7 babies but now only 4 left... Out of which 1 is also getting weak and bony....
I tried hard to make them survive... But no milk is suits them...
U told that u take care of 1 baby bunny.... I want to know how u feed that bunny....and what kind of milk u gave to it
I have a doe that was supposed to not be able to breed, found her in the cage with 2 babies that were warm and dry, got a nesting box, put them in it, she apparently had a total of 10. They all died. I don't know how old she is or have any information about her other than she wasn't supposed to be able to get pregnant. How do I figure out if she's too old or if I should try again?
My first time mom did pull fur but the babies were not moving and they were very cold. We brought them in and warmed them up and I bottle fed them for the first 2days and now she takes care of them but we lost 2. So we now have 2 healthy babies.
I have a question. My bunny who I took home 3 months now. The seller said he was a he.
Today he became a she gave birth to just 1 bunny. I am so confused and idk who got her pregnant. I got other 3 bunnies. All males.
I don’t see the mom coming to feed her baby. Please help. She’s eating a lot. Lettuce. Banana. Carrot. Strawberries. Eating a lot. Not drinking water. Not peeing.
I don’t see her caring for her baby. Just looking around a lot and staying still like freeze and listening. Roaming around my fur carpet room. Her baby is warm. I’m just nervous.
Well, you see now its 5th of August and I bought my bunny at 1st April and the female one just a after my birthday ( she was bought on 11th of April ) Well we were surprised today cause we knew that she was gonna have babies but you see the 7 newborn babies were not given birth into the next box they were all around the hutch. I quickly called my mother and my grandpa and they helped me make them a nest which was quite very big. Normally I gave both the parents over food needed but when she was pregnant and especially when she got her kits I was like opening a health diet shop . Well actually she is eating like a dinosaur she eats indian spinach much more than usual , she's eating tons of cabbages , guavas and like everything.
But I was never offended on them cause my mother says that I am a pure animal lover well animal + insects lover . Well but whenever I saw he she was full and I thought she feeded them but the were all hungry from the birth so our neighbours who had rabbits once said us to hold the female rabbit on her back and take her babies one by one to her chest. Well I did as the said and I got different scratches and some that bleed but I am happy the babies are all full and yes there are 7 babies . But I am not still offended of the mother cause it's her first time . ☺
I don't think mine's feeding the babies. I put a camera on her and can't find her going in at all. And i really don't see milk nipples. What am i going to do? I have another pregnant but it's a week off. This litter is 4 days old. Help
Oof... I have the same situation, but I don’t have another rabbit pregnant so idrk what to do ither..
honestly, if they are 4 days old and still doing ok, they are being fed. It probably isn't anything to worry about. You can get a kitten milk or goat milk replacement from a farm supply store and try to hand feed them but that is difficult to do.
I have an experienced doe who I bred about 5 weeks ago. Yesterday she finally nested, and had one massive kit. Poor girl, this baby was huge, had grown a little fur, and even had top teeth! Unfortunately, as it was alone, it got too cold, and I didn't find it early enough. No pooling in the nails until I had it warm. Sometimes kits just don't make it. Since that kit was so big, we're going to give this doe a little break before rebreeding.
Thank you Chris for your videos they are always easy to follow and very helpful.
Thank you
we got two rabbits a few months ago and we where told they where both girls but found out that one is a boy so one is pregnant. i have been told that they could eat their babies if there is a predator around is that true? also when should i put the nest box in her cage?
It is very unlikely that the mother will eat her babies. It does happen but is very rare. The nest box needs to go in a few days before the doe is going to give birth (30 days from being bred). You may not know when that is. You can take a handful of straw and throw it in the cage. When she starts gathering it up with it hanging out both sides of her mouth (it will be pretty obvious) put the nest box in. She is about to have them. I hope that helps.
My 2 week old baby bunny is losing weight went from 175g to 168g in 1 day should I be concerned?
I've been told it's a protein deficiency in the does if they eat their kits. Have you ever heard of this? Makes me want to give only alfalfa hay prior to kindling and while nursing.
That is a possibility but you would be better off sticking to pellets only rather than hay only. Pellets have a much higher protein level.
Yes stick to pallets, and maybe five them some calf manna, you only feed them a teaspoon a day for 10 days after birth
And really this video helped me a lot to have a healthy bunnies at my home....
Using bedding is it bad for newborn? Like the powder of the bedding sticks around the nose and im afraid it will stop there breathing
I didn’t know my rabbit was expecting a litter. I found 6 in her hutch on Saturday (thinking there were mice in there) one died on the Sunday morning and was really skinny and loose skin. The others are growing really well and big round bellies except for one who looks could go either way. I have tried putting this kit to the does test but he only suckles for a few seconds then falls asleep 😔
Oh no, I am sorry to hear that. If you haven't already you should get a nest box and put them in there. There may not be much you can do for the one baby that doesn't seem to be feeding. The mother is probably doing a good job of taking care of them but for whatever reason, that one just isn't thriving. It happens sometimes.
Thank you so much for the reply. I have a litter box which I put the kits in with some straw and pulled her dowdey (?) hair and added that as you suggestedI guess there’s not much more I can do. Survival of the fittest as they say.
If they are around five days and most are full bellied, warm and Wriggly then she must be feeding them.
Once again great video and very informative
That is pretty much what I think too. Good luck with them.
Hello I spoke with you the other day, was just wondering if you have any suggestions on rabbits and fleas? The male and female are separated due to her having kits. Yesterday I used coconut oil on the male, to help suffocate the fleas. I'm and now the female seems to have a couple on her and wondering if I should do the same, but also how do I treat the kits, as one of them had a flea transfer onto them while being fed by the mother. I don't want to hurt them with anything, but fleas can also do more damage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You!!
If they are meat rabbits I would avoid any kind of pesticide. I would try food grade (make sure it is food grade) diatomaceous earth. Just dust it on them and only use until the fleas are gone. Make sure that there isn't a bunch of straw or hay in the cage that the fleas can live and produce in. I hope that helps.
Hi,
We had a first time mom that did a great jobb nesting and delivered the babies in there. But after 3 days one baby died, day after two more and day after the last two. they looked as she didn't feed them... looked very skinny, never a round belly.
We hadn't had bunnies before, this is a first time for us as well. we tried putting the babies on her so they latched... but it seemed that she had no milk.
The last two we tried "bottle feeding them" but I think it was too late.
Is this normal? could it be that she had no milk?
I am sorry that you had to deal with that. I wouldn't say that it is normal but it does happen from time to time and especially with first time mothers. I have a video coming out this morning that addresses the issue in more detail.
How many hours after the babies are born should you intervene with Syringe feeding if the Mama doesn't show interest in the kits?
You really shouldn't have to intervene at all. Mother rabbits usually don't show any interest in their kits except for feeding time. They only do that a few times a day and usually when no one is around. I would give them about 12 hour or so and check on them at that point if you are really worried about it.
@@Slightlyrednecked my rabbit had her babies but she died a couple days later.. what can i do to keep them warm and well fed?
I have a huge question I'd love to have answered by anyone who can help!!
My doe, supposively went into labor around 3 weeks ago and has been missing ever since. It was positive she was pregnant and one day, she found her own spot to have her babies but we haven't seen her ever since.
She had her bunnies under one of our sheds and it's like impossible to get to her and she hasn't come out yet. We understand she may have dug a hole for her bunnies but every food we've thrown out to her, she hasn't eaten, she's never cane out, we have no idea how she's getting water so we're concerned she might be dead which is very hard for us
We don't want to believe she is dead but we don't know anything else that could have happened, does anyone know anything they could help us out with on what may have happened to her?
We just want her and her babies to be safe and hopefully get them inside before snow hits this week.
First of all, I wouldn't worry about the snow, they should be able to handle that just fine. I would be concerned that she was dead too though. if that is the case I am afraid that there may not be much you can do. If she is still alive then she has to be coming out to eat and drink. If you have a game came you might set it up nearby to see if she is coming out at night. I am so sorry you are having this problem and I can't really help much.
My rabbit keeps jumping on me and leaving her baby’s with no fur or blanket or anything and the baby’s just walk around clueless I watched them for the whole day and she didn’t go near them once and she’s not a first time she had baby’s and protected them
It isn't uncommon for the mother to pay very little attention to her babies except for at feeding time.
I have a 6 new born baby bunnies and I don't know what to do 😭
She never cares even to feed them
she stepped on them and I'm worried they might die 😭😭
That's the same feeling I had the next day I checked on them I found all if them dead. My rabbit is pregnant now and after the babies get a little bit of hair I am Planning to hand feed them and make the milk. Maybe your rabbit is a good mom
@@gamewithme2429 you can also get a nest box and put them inside your home and feed them instead if your mom rabbit dosent feed them.
@@gamewithme2429 what exactly will u feed them? I may have to do that
Don't worry.. She'll not kill them. Its good that she visits them
Great videos Chris, keep up the good work. I'm new at this and the videos are helping me out a lot. Thanks
Awesome. So glad I have been able to help.
My female rabbit, first time momma gave birth around 1:30am. She had 5 kits and I was wondering if they could have possibly fed right after they arrived due to there plump little bellies and also, I know you barely will see her with the kits but I've noticed she goes into the box occasionally as if she is checking up on them to name sure there okay. She'll go in quick and sniff around them then leave.
Sounds like a good mother. It is quite probable that they were fed right after being born. Congrats on your new litter.
Cris another great video full of advice for us first time kits onwers.
Help! I have a question
My Doe has a litter of 7 10 days old and did not feed last night. She is a Exspericend mom. I don't know why...
Try to hold her down and have someone latch the babies onto her
@@Eriana-ju1jq I gave her some extra calicum and she fed them last night! All good now it seems. She fed tonight too
You probably just missed a feeding. Sometimes though rarely they'll feed in the day or even skip a day of feeding.
I thought my rabbit was a boy and didn’t know she was pregnant. Her cage really wasn’t set up for her to have babies(3 babies but one died) but It is a fairly large size cage... in just concerned. I came home from work and saw one had someone gotten out the cage it was still alive though and the other was inside the cage .. she had ripped up all the newspaper and pulled out her fur it was all in a corner her cage was filthy so I cleaned it out and laid out fresh newspaper took a bunch of her fur but because I somewhat messed up her nest when cleaning it out I put a old T-shirt with the babies in it and her fur on top of them. Did I do something wrong? Maybe the T-shirt?
I would suggest getting a nest box. That could even be something as simple as a litter box or something. What you described sounds fine but if you don't have a box you stand the chance of them wandering off from the nest and chilling or freezing to death. I hope that helps.
I'm glad to found your video, my rabbit just had 5 babies, she's a first time mom and also having really bad fungal infection which we didn't notice she was pregnant nor the vet noticed & giving her the anti fungal medicine, will it affect the babies? (We sure will bring them to the vet tomorrow as today is Sunday & the vet is rest)
I am so sorry for the slow response. I bet you have your answer now. I don't think I would worry too much about the medication affecting the babies. I hope it is all going well now.
For next time: Colloidal silver is great for safely killing fungus without chemicals :) It tastes like water and is safe for eyes, ears, mouth, privates, open wounds and more. Works great on infections and viruses, too. And there is no toxicity so zero risk of overdose
Hey Chris, my girl scarlett had 11 babies the night before last. We put her in a room where it would be warm and quiet with daddy in separate cages of course. We had no idea she was pregnant. She did not pull fur and their bellies were not full and round like that. I woke up this morning and all 11 had perished. I tried to save one that was still moving a tiny bit by warming it up but it didn't make it. I'm assuming momma just didn't do her job. Scarlett wasn't even a year old. We got her Last summer. My question is if she has another litter will she more then likely do the same thing or do they mature and take care of them properly as they get older or as they have more litters? I HATE to see more babies pass.
Hi if this happens then you could always keep them warm in cotton and hay and wrap the box in a blanket (with some ventilation)
You can force feed the babies. Just make the mother lie on her back in your lap(on a pillow) and feed the babies by putting them on top of her.
@@mehrmahajan1097 it’s extremely hard to flip a bunny on its back
Hi... hope you are in good health! My rabbit just gave 2 babies...so after how long she'll be feeding?
High Chris
My doe had her 4th litter. She keeps on eating her babies she doesn't pull any fur. Managed to rescue some but the bables don't seem to drink her milk when we flip her over any tips
Thanks in advance
I am sorry to hear about your trouble. It sounds like you have a rabbit with very poor mothering instincts. if it were me, I would replace her with a different doe. I am not sure that there is a way to fix her.
@@Slightlyrednecked thank you for replying and I appreciate it. Do you have any suggestions on how I can keep the litter i saved this morning from dying
Oh, I am sorry, I should have given some advice on that to begin with. You can try to hand feed them (kitten milk replacement or something similar) but that is incredibly hard to do and doesn't work out well most of the time. It may sound cruel but if it were me I think I would put them in a nest box and put them back with mom and just hope that she takes care of them. I honestly think that is their best chance. If she does eat them then it is a definite sign that you don't need to breed her again. It is rare for rabbits to eat their babies but even rarer to do so well after they are born. That usually happens right at the time of birth if it happens at all.
Ty!! Mine just had 5 this morning. She didn’t pull fur and 4 passed. Hopefully she takes care of the last one.
Oh no, i am sorry to hear about that. I am sure she will do better with the next litter.
I have dogs that bark all the time and there outside with my rabbits and she just had 2 babies and she pulled a bunch of hair but one has died already and the other one I do know know about. plus she is a first time mom.
Unfortunately that is pretty common with first time mothers. Sometimes they just don't know what to do. Don't stress too much about it, generally the second litter goes much smoother. The dogs barking shouldn't be a big deal to her really.
our big lop eared rabbit had babies today we think maybe 5 (we didn't want to disrupt the nest) she is indoors caged in a "ferplast rabbit 120 cage" and has built her nest under the raised stair area but completely stuffed the area with straw so we are wondering if she is going to go back in to feed her babies
It sounds like she built a great nest. There is no reason to think she won't take care of the babies. And you can go in and disturb them to check on them. She will still take care of them.
I have seen my bun feed her babies twice now. I have one feeding on video. So soo cuute!
I happen to catch her in the act every now and then, but it is rare.
that's so cool
So no force feeding the kits (holding down mom)?
I have never found that necessary.
My new mother rabbit gave birth to 6 babies out of the box and did not clean them up. I put them in the box, she never touched them and they all died.
Oh no. I am sorry to hear that. If it was a first time mom that can happen. The good news is that they usually get over that with the next litter. I give my rabbits three attempts. if they are not good mothers by the third attempt I look for a replacement.
Thanks I will watch out for that and do as advised.
Good luck with it.
Hey Chris I'm Jamaica what I do is just hold the mom in my arms n put the babies one or two at a time on the breast to feed n it works great for me .God bless brother

My rabbit make a nest and pull all of her fur but she not back to her nest and not feed her babies properly what should I do if she not feed they became die plz reply how should I feed my baby bunny because her mother not care of her
my bunny had 5 bunnies today. she seems to not be feeding them, but i’m not sure. she started pulling fur but she doesn’t seem to be feeding
you probably won't ever see her feeding them so don't stress too much. As long as they are not overly skinny or anything they are being fed.
My first time momma did her hey pulling and built a nest but did not pull very much hair. The next day in the morning I went out and there was blood but no babies. The person that I bought my buck from thought she probably ate her placenta and in the process ate the babies also. What are your thoughts on that? Have you ever had that happen? I really don't want to get a new bunny Mama. I'm hoping the next litter works out better.
Hopefully u'r still active.
My does gave birth to 4, three days ago, I check everyday to see if the babies are full. Problem is 3 of 4 have full bellies all the time and 1 is skinny, so I'm having to force the does on its back and feed the skinny that way. Give me some insight of what's happening Mr. Might sounds off, but the skinny 1 is black and the rest are silver. Weird
I am still active. There could be many things going on. It is more than likely just that the skinny one is the weak one and isn't feeding when the others are for some reason. I think you are doing about all that you can do. The poor bunny may do just fine or it may not make it. If the doe is feeding all the others I don't think it has to do with the doe at all. I hope that helps. Good luck.
Slightly Rednecked Thank you for sharing.
suplement it with kitten milk if they pick on or dont let the tiny one feed ...... i saw it in another thread on here .....
have you ever had the issue of the mother not producing milk? I have a first time mom who accidentaly got pregnant by a foster male. it's been some time over 24 hours and the babies are wrinkly and doesn't have that full belly, I've fed her lots of greens and pellets and I think she has everything she needs. I took one baby out while I had her on her back and lit it nurse but it kept switching nipples making me believe she doesn't have milk! an advice?
I haven't had that issue myself. You mentioned that you are feeding greens to her. I know certain greens (like mint) can cause that issue. That might be a place to start. Sorry to hear about your problems and hope it works out.
I've fed her dill and spinach, I've read that dill is good for milk production but she's still not producing milk and I've been to the vets and are now feeding the kits by hand, it's very exhausting and they don't get that full belly still but a little better. They probably have a very little chance but I'm trying at least, there's not much I can do unfortunately, hope her milk is just heavily delaid
I hope it works out. Honestly I think i would look at replacing that doe. I usually give them a few tries but if she isn't producing milk that is a bad sign. Sorry to hear that.
alfalfa helps with milk try straight alfalfa for a bit .... i was told by feedstore alfalfa is best for milk hay wise.....i also give potato peels tomattoes lkike baby angel sweet tomatoes ..... carrots carrot peels califlower, etc, poppy seed helps as well im told at feed store so i have these poppy seed cupcake treats from walmart pet section.
my rabit book says the milk might not come in right away but should withing a day otr two .... try different foods that help with that .....

Please please answer my question like 3 days ago my ribbts had babes we but them inside an stuff the mum was walk over them not feeding them and the next day there all dead plz reply
I am so sorry to hear that. I am not sure what your question is though. If you are asking why they died, there are lots of things that could have happened. Most of the time with baby rabbits it is because they got cold. If you don't have a good nest box with lots of nesting material that is probably the issue.
@@Slightlyrednecked but we turned the hater on she hasn't but any fure at all
@@cheichthiam8344 if its her first batch, she might not know what to do. An inexperienced doe, (her first litter) almost always looses some if not all the kits(babies) the first time around. Nerves can also play a factor. You say you touched them? you most always dont want to touch the babies for at least the first 24 hours. If you feel you need to, wear a plastic glove. I find rabbits are like birds. Once your scent gets on the babies, the mom doesnt want to have anything to do with them.

You have given me just the right information I need.. _/\_ But my bunny just doesn't want to feed her babies and this is her first time.. When I tried to lay her down on her back, she cut the throat of one of the babies.. :'( what should I do.. Pls help.
oh now, so sorry to hear about your issues. First of all, are you sure she isn't feeding them? If you are sure then there may not be a whole lot you can do other than find a way to hold her down to let them nurse. You can clip her nails so she doesn't cut any more babies. Again, you will probably never see her feed her babies but that doesn't mean she isn't feeding them. I am sorry that I don't have a better solution but that is really the only option i know of.
My rabbit actually threw her babies off the top cage & the cage has a barrier all around the cage so I think she purposely tried to kill them

I am a little worried about this..😞
Put it in mild sunlight in the morning it will soon open its eyes . I hope the Baby bunny has opened her eyes because I am reading this comment 3 weeks later after being posted .
In my House i had bought a pair of rabbits they gave 3 babbies one was killed by their own parents 🙄the both male and female jumped on the babbies . My rabbits are hopeless cases I separated the babbies from their mother . In my My case rabbits are the worst pet for me now 😌. If I ever buy a pet it would definitely be a Puppy 🙂 nothing else . Now I have to hold by force the mother Rabbit so that the babbies can drink milk. Otherwise she is not at all feeding her babbies 😠.
@@barplays8956 You have to separate the male and leave the female with its own babies and put the babies in a box with a towel under them and if their about a week old or almost 2 weeks (usually at 2 weeks they should be strong and need more the once in aday) they should only get 1 feeding time in a day so there's no need to hold her down she knows what she's doing unless you know 100% unless it obvious because their usually very skinny and don't have much energy . The female should take great care of them but some might not be the best just make sure their warm and getting milk if you think the mother is careless but that shouldn't really happen unless the babies are weak because usually females rabbits leave the weak to die in the wild for its survival and other babies.
just wanted to give u a bit more help sorry if theirs some wrong things I just wanted to help you and give you a better opinion about rabbits because their usually very wonderful pets if treated properly you just have to be careful just know their prey animals so their usually scared in a lot of moments.

Please help my doe just gave up on her babies tonight.
My doe just had a litter of eight kits they're all healthy and fine. I moved her out of her cage with the dad so she could be alone with her babies but a day after her being with her baby she wants nothing to do with them. What do I feed them and how much. I also have one kid that has a very swollen leg and ankle and he's just dragging it around I'm not sure what to do with them. His still eating fine.
I am sorry to hear about the injured kit. Unfortunately it sounds like it may have a broken leg. There probably isn't much you can do for it and you may want to consider culling it to put it out of it's misery. It is a tough decision to make. As for the mother not wanting anything to do with her babies, that is pretty normal. They really don't pay much attention to them at all until it is time to feed them (once or twice a day when no one is around). As long as they are not overly skinny they are fine and don't need anything else. If you do notice that they are overly skinny and feel you must feed them look for a kitten milk replacement or goat milk replacement from a farm supply store.
I NEED HELP!!!!My doe had 5 babies three days ago. 4 of them seem rather fat except for one which is smaller. All seemed well until today. Mommy keeps trying to break out of her cage.head butting it. Now I do not know what to do. Do I put hr back outside with the babies? Do I just let her out for a while alone? Please help
Wow, sorry for the slow response. That is a unique situation. You can put her back out (not with the male though or she will immediately get pregnant again) and take her to the babies (or the babies to her) once or twice a day to feed them. Or you can just leave her in the cage with them and hope that she calms down. I know that isn't a definite answer but I hope it helps a little.
Thank you for responding. I took the babies out of the iglo they were in. I thought that maybe she was anxious for not bieng able to see them without having to go inside. I made her an open nest and it seems to have worked. She is much calmer and lays most of the day alongside them. The babies are growing fast. The little one, I help get two extra feeds per day. I think they will be ok.
Sounds like it is working well now. Congratulations and good luck going forward.
Thank you
How do you deal with aggressive rabbits? When I open the cage door to a new female I bought and stick my hand in to get her feed bowl she goes after my hand. What do I do?
I try offering some treats and petting them. If they don't calm down after doing that every day for a week then I just send them to freezer camp.

Hi! My doe had 10 babies all live! They are 3 days old today. I have 2x yesterday found a baby out of the nest box and across the other side of the cage, second time his poor little foot was stuck and he was crying. I think its tge same fat baby doing this, I think hes attached to does nipple and going out with her lol but its making my anxiety explode lol Is this normal? What can I do to stop this from happening?
That isn't that abnormal. It happens from time to time with my rabbits too. usually it only happens once or twice but every once in a while you get an over aggressive feeder that likes to hold on tight. You can put a lip on the front of you nest box that faces to the inside. It doesn't need to be very big just a small ledge kind of that will act as a scraper to scrape them off when she jumps out of the nest. personally, I just check them a few times a day and put any that are out back in the nest box. By about 2 weeks old they are going to be able to get in and out on their own so it really isn't that much work for me to do.
my rabbit had 3 babies yesterday and they are really skinny and dont look they are being fed I have ordered replacement milk but what should I do while I wait for it to come because I don't want them to die.
Oh no, so sorry to hear about your problems. If they are not being fed you can try to force the mother to feed them. Basically, hold her on her back and place the babies on her to feed. It is difficult but can be done. I hope everything works out for you.
Thanks
I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and I noticed that nobody's ever asked this one question now I know this video is old so it might have been asked since then but what if you have to does in a cage and they're both pregnant at the same time would they be able to take care of each other's babies or would they fight where they kill each other's babies would they kill each other
It really depends on the rabbits. It is possible that they will share the responsibility to raise all the young but does can get very territorial so it is more likely that they will fight and there will be problems.

Thank you for such an informative video. My question is what if there’s not a lot of hay or fur in the cage? There was but our nesting box doesn’t have a bottom, just cage, so it falls through. I put some alfalfa and hair back in the cage, not the box, in hopes that the mama would do what she needed to with the babies. I didn’t think you were supposed to get your scent on anything to do with the babies?? I’m such a worrier when it comes to my animals. It’s a warm 83 degrees where I am. Should I worry they’re not covered?? It will get down to about 60 tonight.
First of all, you don't need to worry about getting your scent on the babies. The mother won't abandon them. I would definitely make sure that there is enough straw (or hay) that they can be covered up. You may have to put a piece of cardboard on the bottom of your nest box to keep the bedding from falling through the cage floor. I hope that helps.
