  • The Rendille tribe of Northern Kenya is our topic for today. Many Somalis claim them and indeed there are linguistic similarities in the two languages of Rendille and Somali. Could they be distant cousins? Watch the video to find out. Kindly remember to subscribe to my channel for more informative videos about Africa and her people.

The background music is Somali song by the late Somali singer Faisal Omar Mushteq. Its title is ' Hurdo gama' ma ledo, jecayl igama guuro', which means: I can't sleep bacause love would not leave me alone'. Because of close Cushitic rythms and languages, it's obvious that Somali music touches the hearts of Rendiles.

The Rendille claim they were Somalis and Muslim. They left main Somalis in search of water and pasture, they came to contact with Korrey(Samburu) who agreed to give them girls for marriage only if they left Islam and so they(Rendille) claim they abandoned their Qura'ns and Looxs at Mt. Xayle Luqun Dheer(Leysamis) but there was earthquack and they had to make animal sacrifises at the place( today it occassionaly roars and they still make sacrifices. The Rendille still have Islamic practise like the Mowlac( to which they make Adhan like noises) make Sadaqa( yes they call it Sadaqa) and some fast at the month of Soom(Rendille). They also sacrifice at the day of Idd Adha which they call Sooriyo. When there is a lunat eclipse the Rendille offer prayers at night(clearly Islamic tradition). This disqualifies your Waaq( missionary verssion) story. The Rendille also have Somali clans like Sanle(Ajuran, Fiqishini,) Adola( Garri) Subeer(Maxmed Subeer, Ogaden) Dhib Saxay(claim they are from Issaq) Gaaldeyla(Geeylible, Degodia) e.t.c
Yes they are lost SOMALI and were Muslim.

You know a lot, but I have to disagree you they are ancient Somalis, yes Ajurans could have immigrated to them as they did to Borans, all Somali runaway clans has joined to Rendille, one of the subclans of Saale (which you described as Sanle-Ajuran) is Ellegale (Ciidagalle) and further sub-clan of Ellegale is Khobes (Qobeys which is Dir), in our traditions these clans are apart from each other but according to Rendille they are all Saale. So their clan structure and ours are quite different. the striking historical event is the Iiber and Waakhgamur which I think is Yibir and Waakh-gaamur another word Wadaad and Waranle. they still use Gumanyo or the sticks of Kulan-tree used by our yibir talesmen, they have and call as we call the tumaal (blacksiths) and the other craftsmen, unlike ours the rendille Iibre or religious clans has the highest social ranking.

I showed my grandmother videos of rendille culture and she said their name resembles the somali title “givers/carriers of the blessings from god” ((as ra is also word in somali for god, dilli is the somali item holding milk or water: and in pre islamic somali culture water or milk would be poured upon those chosen as rulers ))

Somalis have always been Somalis, Somalia being their land of origin according to my history teacher. I heard the Rendille were a Somali tribe that refused to accept Islam when the majority of Somalis embraced Islam. Waaq was the pre-Islamic religion of the Somalis and the name waaq still exits in some places like, Caabudwaaq which is the name of a village. When the Rendille people refused to accept Islam they were rejected by the majority and they moved. I don’t know if this is true but that’s what I heard.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL people!!!!! I pray with all my heart that all these ethnic groups are allowed to exist in their traditional way of life. It's good to have different ways of life and to appreciate and respect them the same way way we respect modern cultures. They have important and valuable things to teach and cultural diversity is important. It would be so boring if we all thought the same way and did things the same way. We wouldn't learn anything new. We would never have a real vacation, because everywhere you went would be the same thing. It's GREAT to learn and perceive another way of life. It keeps a BALANCE. Thanks for the video.

The rendile are so nilotic by practice. The luos before intermarriges took place were tall slim with smpoth skins; they consumed a bit of blood , observed to date 3 day to a girl's honour and 4 for a boy.
They gave out the dead man's clothes ceremoniously as well.
Cush , Egypt, Canan , Libya Nubians are brothers from one ancestor called Ham.
Their beady dressing os quite similar to the Nilo- Hamatic tribes all- over Kenya East and south Africa.

****Rendille are genetically ~90% cushitic(Rendille have very minor Mota admixtures and are closer to Somali genetically more than other cushitic groups who have significant Mota)
      ****Rendille can be modelled as
      80-90% Somali
