Just to clarify , moldovan language doesn't exist , in Moldova we learn romanian language, speak romanian with a different accent and sometimes use russian words, because of the influence (russification) . "Moldovan" was just a concept by the Russians, to dictance us from Romania , but it was really just romanian language with cyrillic alphabet (like most slavic nations use). A short documentary:
In the 1300s, Moldovia was created.
It become a vasal state for the Ottoman Empire for a long time.
In 1600s, Michael the Brave united Transilvania, Wallachia and Moldovia. But in 1601 the union was ruined.
Again, it become a vasal state for a lot of empires.
In 1812, Russian anexed Basarabia from Moldovia. In 1859, Wallachia and Moldovia were united into one single nation: Romania.
WW1 ended, and Kingdom of Romania was created.
In 1940's, USSR taked Basarabia from Romania, becoming an ussr state (Moldova not Romania)
After the colaspe of the Soviet Union, Moldova was free and wanted to be united with Romania but Romania had some problems with anti-comunists and Transnistria was independent from Moldova, but it was not recognized by so many countries. So, the union had never taked place.

The concept of a "moldovan language" is a 100% russian creation.
The people of Moldova, Valachia and Transylvania that spoke romanian all called themselves romanians (rumani, romei, romani, rîm), this is attested as far back as the 15th century by foreign travellers from Italy, which found it weird that we called ourselves "romans" in their language, and they found it also surprising that we spoke a "broken italian" language. Romanian is the ethnonym, "moldovan" is a regional descriptor, just like banatean, ardelean, oltean, muntean, etc. But people identify primarily by their language as far back as the medieval era.
Dating as far as back as 1812's annexation by the Russian Empire, the eastern part of Moldova was renamed to Bassarabia by the russians (out of a confusion on their part) in a few years several massive deportations of romanians to Siberia would occur and total ban of the romanian language (1830-1840's) with russian being imposed by the Empire.
Later, after strong russification and colonization of several other ethnicities, the Russian Empire would internally fall to the Bolshevic Revolution in 1917 and during this coup, Basarabia broke away from the russian state and decided to declare independence, followed by an immediate decision to re-unite with the now formed Kingdom of Romania in 1918, a union that was legalized in 1919.
In 1940, the now USSR decided to invade Basarabia and annex it, giving the romanian troops an ultimatum to leave, since our military was completely shit, we gave up Basarabia to them :(, a decision that still haunts us and Basarabia to this day, a decision that was made during a power vacuum as Romania was going through Hell during the war. Also, we switched sides during WWII, like many other countries, and during our alliance with USSR, the russians kept raping and pillaging Moldova, up until the war's end in 1945 Moldova was still being ravaged by our "allies" the russians, this is why people in Moldova especially will NEVER trust Russia, and should never.
And thus, Basarabia was once again annexed by the russians who started the russifications and deportations again, together with killings of what they considered "capitalist imperialist pigs" etc. In the 1950's they started mass deporations to Siberia again, colonizations with russians and held several councils, attempting to ban the romanian language again, but finally decicing to allow the people of Basarabia to speak their native language but renaming it to "moldovan", however russian was considered the first official language. They also forced the population to adopt the russian kyrillic alphabet again (Romania actually switched from kyrillic to latin alphabet in 1848-ish when deciding to re-affirm our latin identity, we inherited the kyrillic script direct from the Bulgarians in medieval times, in case anyone is curious).
And this is why Basarabia or the now Republic of Moldova is separated from us, because they were annexed twice. Basarabia's desire for Independence is actually a desire to be independent of Russia, their natural desire (if you actually ask educated moldovans) is to unite with Romania, even if most people in Moldova maybe don't think of this daily.
I'm sure if the spirits were high and a dual refferendum would take place, both Romania and Moldova would re-affirm their historical wish to re-unite, as the Union of romanian-speaking lands is the single most important driving force behind our national identity as far back forever.
To Romanians everywhere, in Valachia, Transylvania and Moldova on both banks of the Prut river, Union is all that matters in our history, we just wanted to have our own country for people who speak romanian, and we fought very hard to unite Valachia, (western)Moldova, break away from the Ottomans, and finally unite Transylvania with Romania and liberate it from the hungarian oppresion of a majority-romanian speaking peasant population for centuries......
The last piece of our puzzle is to RE-unite with (eastern)Moldova, this is not an annexation, we will never do it by force, we will do it by the people's will, the Romanian People's will.

Not the whole Moldova is Basarabia. Originally it had 3 parts. The upper country (north), The lower Country (Middle) and Basarabia (the opening to the sea). Later, the names changed a little, the north became Bucovina, the middle and the Romanian part today is just Moldova and the east, today the Republic of Moldova (which no longer has that region formerly called Basarabia or today Bugeak) is Basarabia.
After Russia annexed Basarabia from the rest of Moldova, it still maintained autonomy in the Ottoman empire.

This country may be one of the poorest in Europe but life here doesn't seem as bad as some say most of us are not very patriotic to say the least unlike the other people from the funny zone but we still appreciate what the little we have and cherish it regardless, most of us see ourselves as "Moldovan" a people separate from the romanians, personally I think that's stupid but hey you can hardly change 67 years of brainwashing and maybe with time people will start to realise that we're the same people. Moldavians are NOT romanians. Moldova is 550 years older than Romania. I have read the history of Moldova, with simple research anyone with a brain, will notice that Romania was first a province in north turkey before 1800, as you can see here an official map made by historian Mathew Carey. There was no Romania in Wallachia, Moldova, or Transylvania. Ottomans have invaded Wallachia and occupied it for more than 400 years. Romanians immigrated, stole the part of Moldavian Land and the Moldavian language, and called it "Romanian" language and rominian state only after 1881 It is MOLDAVIAN language, It is called MOLDAVIAN since the 14th century for your knowledge. Rominians share the MOLDAVIAN language since 1881 because Rominia annexed only part of a Moldovan territory with Moldavian language, and Valahia with valahian language, where Rominia and rominian language were born by Russia in 1873 -1881. Actually, the Republic of Moldova is another part of MOLDAVIA, an independent country with the MOLDAVIAN language. Go to school and study more MOLDAVIAN Constitution, art.13, and legislation, my dear ...

Lol, they don't they simply have no other choice. They'd be bankrupt without foreign aid from Bucharest and EU and half of their entire population has Romanian dual-citizenship. The answer is because if they expressed willingness to unification they would risk another open war with Russia like in 1992. Transnistria is given too much importance in this video as a "breakaway state", it's not a state it's a Russian garrison with hostages.

From what I read, 10 years ago support for Moldovan reunification with Romania was between 10 to 20% in different polls, and in April 2021 it was 50%. So in 10 years it became 5 times more popular to want reunification. Considering that trend, in 10 more years more than 50% would reunification.

    • @dmitrievakate8320
      @dmitrievakate8320 2 года назад +9

Well, it never was 50%. Now it's around 30-40% depending on the poll, still a pretty big jump. I am against unification, however it's not the figure itself that saddens me. Many experts agree that this jump represents basically hopelessness of Moldovans when it comes to their future. It's not about language, culture or history or whatever the people in the comments section are super busy talking about. It's about poverty and vulnerability that gets more visible with the coronavirus crisis, gas prices and war against Ukraine (basically when the jump happened). I've talked to people that are for unification and it kinda matches with what the experts say. If Romania wasn't a part of Nato and EU, the figure would have been constantly at the 5-15% mark. People just see unification as a GTA cheat code IRL. Some people think that right after unification they will have Bucharest-level salaries. People are disappointed in local corrupt politicians and think that Romanian corrupt politicians will do better. So it's actually not good for both parties. For Romania it is better financially and overall to unite with prosperous and less corrupt Moldova that can do stuff on its own and not constantly rely on Bucharest for literally everything. I mean, if you are for unification at all costs, you can go on and be happy about this statistics, however...

For starters Ottomans didn't 'took over' Moldavian Principality, they manage to make them surrender as a vasal State, which the turks only 'controlled' from a distance, Moldavian Principality was never actually occupied. They were offcourse obligated to pay tribute or else, ottomans will invade, later the turks named their rullers from Instabul (romanian or greek, known as fanariots) but that was also ever really going smooth. You didn't talk about romanian common identity between romanians and Moldovans, which moldovan chroniclers like Grigore Ureche and the ruler of Moldova Dimitrie Cantemir who wrote extensively about the history and common identity of the three countries. Another thing, when Wallachia united in 1859 with Moldova, the Moldovan Principality was already cut in half(from 1812 by the Russian empire, Basarabia + Buceak, and some parts by Austro-Hungarian empire, Bukovina), not as you represented, a whole romania + a today's moldovan territory. Also in soviet Times after russia re-stoled the territory, they did a mass deportation, extermination and they pumped a lot of different identity propaganda, which is also common knowledge. After the Transnistrian war the country didn't join Romania because... they couldn't, the russian boot was still pressing their neck, through politicians payed by the Kremlin and war-mongering ofc. Yes it's tru that most Moldovans see themselves as a separate national entity by know, but the reasons are not so simple

Trust me, my friend... us the 80-90s generation have been asking this question for decades ever since we learned from schools that there is basically no difference and we are 1 and the same people. Even during middle ages, when we were politically divided into different countries and there was "no Romania" as some have orgasm saying it (cough hungarians)... our people were united in culture, language, symbols...etc and the late middle ages chroniclers attested this fact based on historic&linguistic studies published in those times. Needless to say they called themselves Romanians not Vlachs which was the term used by foreigners. Eastern Moldavia(Basarabia as we call it) which had been part of medieval Romanian province of Great Moldavia for 500 years was ripped off in 1812 by the Russian Empire and despite staying for 106 years under their rule, the could not change the feelings of most people which voted for unification in 1918 after WW1. However after Ribentrop-Molotov pact and WW2 and as a consequence of losing the war against Russia, it became a russian teritorry again under USSR this time and it's still a mistery how intense their manipulations over the Romanians from here had been performed in just 45 years that in 1990 after the fall of the soviets they voted for independence and not for reunification with Romania. Time has passed and the younger generations have started to change their views towards unifications or EU at least. However, as a consequence of the Ussr actions: depopulation of Romanians, transfer of Russian population and the manipulation described above which had an impact on the current older generations... the percentage nowadays which support unification is around 35% but I trust that it will change and we will always support our Romanian brothers from the East!! 🇷🇴🇲🇩 - One nation, one people, never forget!!

Russia has thretened them many times and even cut gas and electricity when they tried to get closer to Romania. A lot of regular people but also Moldavian leaders always wanted to unite. As well as many Romanians.

Well the polls don't really confirm what you're saying. The figures of public support for unification only recently jumped because of the combination of corona and gas crisis and the war against Ukraine being the last addition to poverty and lack of feeling secure. The politicians in Moldova, who support unirea, never hid it, however you should always remember they are politicians. I think it's more about the direction you know better. If you have business with Russia and you are an expert and not noticing human rights abuses, it's your direction where you can get money and political points, even if you support unirea. The same with unionist politicians. In recorded statistics 5-40% of people supported unification at different points in time (from what I remember from different poles). However, strictly unionist parties (which exist, they are not all banned) never came close to those figures. People don't trust them. And yeah, people either don't have reasons to hide their preferences when it comes to unification. Russia doesn't control us anymore and when it had a veeeeery significant influence we still had unionist parties and marches and demonstrations. And yeah, if a country wants to still be a country, it needs to be independent. I mean. Yeah. If you want to drink water it means you want to drink water.

Because Austria was never part of Germany and Austrian is a rather different part of Germanic language and Montenegro had its own history as a separate state from Serbia. Meanwhile Moldovan Republic claims same history and language with Romania, while historical Moldova, 2/3 Moldovan majority are in Romania and 3/4 of all Moldovans are Romanian citizens.

Good video, you should also have mentioned how Stalin deported Romanians from Moldova in an attempt to make it more Russian, just like in Ukraine. The USSR also forced Moldovans to use the Cyrillic alphabet and taught children in school how they weren't the same people as Romania. The result is the invention of the "Moldovan language", which is basically just Romanian, and the strong Russian presence in Transnistria (where Moldovan-language schools are still repressed by the local government).

morevover, since 1944-1990 there was an administrative "wall" between Romania and the Soviet Moldavia. Citizens of both countries were not allowed to communicate each other. Romanian citizens were not allowed to visit the Soviet Moldova and conversely. Exceptions was made only for first grad of relatives (parents or brothers). It was something similar with West Germany and East Germany.

As a Romanian I believe it s better if we remain separated, I don t think we ll succeed in integrating 3 mil people more, including the russian-speaking Transnistrian population who would also not see a union in their interest. Regardless of history, I think we need to stay realistic and accept that the 21st century is maybe no more the time for redrawing borders.
Anyway, I wish them all the best in developing as it seems they re on the right path. Also, they re always welcome to come to Romania if that s what they wish

There is nothing in common about Republic of Moldova and Romania, which claims same language and history with Romania. Austria was never part of Germany, Austrians speak a rather different Germanic language, Kosovo was never part of Albania, Montenegro has its own history compared to Serbia, North Macedonians claim an own historical identity from Bulgaria and Serbia, Belgium and Switzerland freely unite completely different ethnic groups.
