You realize that you've just invited the entire country of Canadian music lovers to your channel. When the HIP is in the building, a devoted legion of HIP fans will always follow. Looking forward to more TTH reactions! Congrats, you've both just discovered one of the greatest "hidden secret" bands to ever walk this planet. Gord Downie and The HIP are Rock Royalty in Canada. We exported Rush to the world, but we sacredly kept the HIP all to ourselves!

As an American who grew up in New York State on the Canadian border less than an hour from The Hip’s hometown Kingston, Ont. The first time I saw them live was in 1989, I was 13 years old. And 30 concerts later I saw them for the last time in 2012. I would consider myself a lifelong fan. I’ve met the band on numerous occasions, they were the most cool down to earth guys. And when I got the email from the band as a part of their Fanclub that Gordon had a brain tumor it really did break my heart. It was like a piece of my childhood was ending. I grew up with them, and for years I was alone.. they were like my little secret band that I loved that nobody else cared about yet. through the 90s more and more Americans at least in the border states were discovering them. One of their songs was even my cousins wedding song. They really are a special band for many of us. When they performed this concert I was watching from Atlanta on a livestream, but my heart truly was in Canada that night, singing along and crying.

After Gord died, there was an article written about him in the NY Times. To paint the picture of what he meant to Canadians the author made one of the best descriptions of him I have ever read
"The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close."

As an American, and Hip fan since 1989 or 1990, Gord's death is one of the hardest moments of the last few years for me. I was a very proud American fan and introduced them to every one I possibly could.
Oh, and it wasn't just Canadians listening to the last concert. There were many, many kids who grew up in border towns and along the Great Lakes who were right there with Canadians that night, and who mourned that dark day in October 2017.
    Rest in Peace, Gord. #InGordWeTrust

Every single Canadian I know watched this show. My WHOLE family watched, It was so bittersweet. We knew he was going to die, he knew he was gonna die. All of Canada grieved that one. For example, every transit systems’ bus across all of Canada the day after his death, read: “GORD, WE’LL MISS YOU”. The Prime Minister attended the concert, as he is a big fan too. The Hip were part of every high school party, every dance, every college dorm, every college party. They were summer at the cottage. They were road trips. They were Canada. The other biggest thing I loved about Gord was his heart. He was railing against the Residential School System, before it was cool or popular. It was his legacy. So even Canada’s Indigenous Peoples loved Gord. Thank you for this Asia and BJ. I may have sobbed in parts, but it’s just because he meant that much. “No Dress Rehearsal, This Was Gord’s Life” 🥺💔

Roughly 12 million Canadians watched the live last performance of our beloved "Hip" and yet another 10 million would do so following the concert. I was 60 years old then and sobbed uncontrollably during this their last concert and last song. I have done so ever since even when hearing just a few notes. I can't explain my reaction to this song, or this band, or what it means to be Canadian but our outpouring of support for a band and our national grief for the loss of one of its members tells a lot. Thanks Asia and BJ for giving a nod to one of Canada's most beloved bands, the Tragically Hip. The lead singer Gord Downey was considered one of the great poets of our nation, writing about the fabric that binds our great country. I never got a ticket to the arena to see them and the Square had lots of people overcrowded so I just went to the bar and watched it on TV with a few friends. I was around when they filmed one of their first videos at a bar that has been closed down now for 32 years. Small Town Bring Down, was the name of that video. They were our hometown boys. Brought me to tears once again. You may not have recognized the comments early in the news portion from Prime Minister Trudeau (young, handsome, dark curly hair). He grew up with the Hip, too. I remember marking that night off on my calendar weeks in advance. People in my neighbourhood projected the final concert onto exterior walls...the songs were ringing through the streets. Everyone was outside, crying and singing along with Gord and the Hip. Gord drew unprecedented, ongoing attention to the wrongs done to Canadian indigenous people. In Canada, that had a big impact on people beginning to change their views on the importance of that. Today the Pope is in my Canadian city, apologizing to Canadian Indigenous people for the abuses inflicted upon them by the Catholic church. Gord Downie is part of that story for me.

Thanks for doing this Asia & BJ! The Tragically Hip were a cultural phenomenon. I don't think there are too many countries that can say one artist unified them like "The Hip" did in Canada. They will be forever a part of the building of this nation. He wrote and sang a lot about the Canadian experience. But he also wrote and sang about some more universal subjects too. I am from Vancouver, and yes, this was truly hard to watch but amazing at the same time. Basically watching this in 2016 knowing, he knew, he would never perform again. Please, guys, go down the rabbit hole and react on their videos, not just the music and words, watch Gord Downie sing from the beginning of The Hip. Great Reaction Asia and BJ.

I watched the livestream in Australia with my family. I made the kids watch it, telling them this is part of your Canadian heritage, and some day if you go to school in Canada or anything like that you can say you witnessed it. I would have taken the day off work if it didn't wind up falling on the weekend local time. Gord was an amazing peformer who did a lot for others through charity, etc, and while he was far from his best that night for obvious reasons he just put his heart and soul into it as usual, and everyone was there for him.

I saw them in Toronto and Hamilton for this last tour, I’m from Buffalo. I love them so much. We love a lot of Canadian bands here in Western NY. Our Lady of Peace, The Headstones, Big Wreck, The Tea Party, Three Days Grace, USS, City and Color. Lol Gord never sang his songs the same way. You’d sing like the album and it was not the same live. He was so animated live. I’ve seen them so many times through the years.

I was very fortunate to attend the concert in Ottawa, Ontario a few days earlier. Gord meant so much to Canadians, he was a poet. The Hip were our soundtrack, they were our conscience and they kept us accountable about our history and the mistakes we’ve made as a nation. They truly did unite us.
Thank you for showing this video, it means a lot to us.

My cousins husband passed away from the same type of brain cancer that Gordon did and he also LOVED the hip!!!! So much so they even named their dog Gordon. He even was sent a video from the lead guitarist from the hip just encouraging him and just plain out sending love. When he sadly passed this was the song he personally picked for his funeral. Now I know why…because Gordon went out with the same song!!! Thank you so much for sharing this!!!

Bless you both for covering this. This was a HARD time. He is so beloved in Canada, I grew up with The Tragically Hip. I remember buying my first cassette tape "Road Apples" by The Hip, and it was a revelation. Once I first heard them, I was hooked for life. I wasn't able to make it to their last performance, and I bawled like a baby when I saw this. Much Love from British Columbia, Canada. Thank You once again.❤🙏

I knew these fine men when they were starting out in Kingston. Three of them were in classes with me at Queen's University there. They played small local bars, the campus pub and the home of the Saturday afternoon ballet (strip club for our American friends). When I moved to Manhattan for work, I missed them getting big in 1988 or so. Saw them years later when they played the Central Park bandshell with Jeff Healey 🇨🇦 on Canada 🇨🇦 Day, July 1, in the late 90s. We had two kids by then. I had a lot of their records. I never saw them again until I watched this Final show/ simulcast on the TV/radio around a campfire at our cottage in Canada with friends and all of our grown kids......who knew every song!! Not sure how many millions watched this way--there were similar gatherings all over Canada--but we all had laughter, a singalong and dancethon and a good cry!❤

The last line he ever sang to us: "and disappointing you is getting me down". I saw them probably 25 times, from $25 concerts in bars to $100s of dollars in arenas, to festivals like Another Roadside Attraction. I met him backstage and chickened out when he came by - I made by boyfriend get Coke Machine Glow signed (Gord's poetry book). I saw his last show in Vancouver about a month before this on July 26, 2016. It was my kid's 11th birthday and I took them with me to the show. I miss you, Gordie. Every year on October 17th I buy an instrument for a music kid in his honour.

Had seen them in Hamilton a few nights earlier and then made my way to Kingston for this final time seeing them together as a band. The whole arena was electric for the entire night and I had tears come down my face many times during the concert. This song was the epitome of what the Hip was about and it was heavy.

Hello guys. First off, I’m Canadian and Tragically Hip have been a fixture of Canadian Culture for a very long time and has woven through my life and became an integral part of the Canadian experience. What I want to say to you is that in my experience I have found there are great number of derivative artists out there but very few truly original artists. Gord was a true original. He had his own unique style and wore it proudly. We all felt the world is a better place because he graced us with his presence. Thanks for the kind words.

This was one of the greatest music nights in my lifetime, and I'm old enough to have had many! This concert was simulcast all over the county, and the whole country was watching! The greatest music sendoff ever! I get choked up just thinking about it!
Imagine getting the news that you have a limited time left to live, and a fairly accurate timeline - how would you spend that time?! This man knew he was leaving his heart and legacy through his music, and spent much of his remaining time preparing one final show to leave Canadians with one final encore concert to bring us all together from coast to coast in a spirit of love! So sad and uplifting at the same time!
Thanks so much for covering this video!

I was 19 when I was introduced to the Hip. Along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Metallica, some GnR, and all these greats coming onto the scene. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news that Gord was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Easily the hardest I've ever been hit by news like that about a celebrity. I was crushed. When the band announced that farewell tour, I swore I'd do anything I could to get to one of the 2 shows here in Edmonton, and I did. We went to night 2, and it was the most emotionally charged concert I'll ever attend. Lotta smiles. Lotta tears. Lotta memories. I'll remember exactly where I was for this show. Craft Brewhouse in Edmonton, with my wife and 4 good friends. The CBC didn't just broadcast this live across the country. They preempted prime time coverage of the Rio Olympics. There were way more people watching than the ratings tell us. Every bar was full. Cities and towns were hosting free public viewings in city squares or parks. And millions of ex-pats watching online from around the world. We could never adequately explain just how big and important the Hip are in this country.

This show was gut wrenching. So many memories, so many tears, and total disbelief that they would never play again. No one out in boats, not many bonfires, but the music echoed across the whole lake. It was surreal.

The truly united the country that night

So I stumbled across this channel because it came across my feed and saw this clip. First starters, you two seem like such genuine wonderful people. To this day, when I think of Gord Downie, I still get choked up. It's almost like a little piece of Canada died when he died. I think the reason the group resonated so much with Canadians, is because they were uniquely popular within Canada itself, and not as much the planet. They were super talented, and they often sang about uniquely Canadian subjects, politics and they embraced being Canadian and what it means to be Canadian.
Thank you for posting this, and Asia I would like to thank you for making me cry...lol.
