If you remove a keycap you can see why the lighting is the way it is. The new Logitech switches (as opposed to the old Romer-Gs) have centered stems for attaching the keycaps, and therefore the LED is displaced to the top of the switch, which is why it only shines through to the primary legend symbols. There are advantages to this, as switch design is more uniform across their product line, and it allows for keycaps to be replaced more easily. On Romer-G switches all the symbols are lit up because the LED is centered under the keycap.
@@BrickBazooka Not unfortunately. Those stems for the keycaps are so damn easy to break. Logitech is actually straight up replacing my keyboard with the G815, which is why I am here.
@@BrickBazooka you win, you lose some. You will eventually memorize where all the keys are if you type enough. I will much rather have a durable switch/keycap design than having better backlight. I've been on the hunt for a low profile mechanical keyboard for almost six months and I still haven't found one that suits my needs. Eventhough there are so many manufacturers and models out there, there is just no versatility. I game a bit and I also type quite often. I would love to get my hands on a full size low profile keyboard that has good build quality, rgb backlights (all symbols should be visible ofc), braided cable, standard indicator lighst for num caps and scroll locks (lots of logitech models are missing those), no macros (especially on the left side making a keyboard longer than it needs to be), no usb passtrhroughs (I just don't find them useful), and most importantly I want a layout that has the big enter key and the long left shift key - a hybrid between ANSI and UK layout. I would gladly pay >300$ for a keyboard like that!!! And I am positive I am not the only one! Sadly I can't find such!

The backlighting secondary key function isn't a huge issue for me and I'm really happy with the purchase. I do like the mention of it as the negatives people say about a product generally say more about it than the positive reviews. So far I'm loving it. It'll take a moment to get accustomed to the lighter keypress but I think it's going to ultimately result in a more enjoyable typing experience.
One additional problem. The symbols that are "see through" actually do NOT hold a transparent clear plastic, it is instead some sort of light blue tone. Big issue? YES, I want my standard setting to hold clear white and you would expect to achieve this using RGB code 255, 255, 255, BUT as mentioned, this will turn the symbols on the buttons light blue. this means that the Logitech G HUB software, where you can pick a colour and assign it to one or several keys, is way off the result you will get on they keys IRL. The closest I have come to a clear white is RGB 249, 198, 203 which according to any colour scale should result a light red. Instead, it seems to compensate for some of the blue tone in the keys and result in in a half decent white colour (with a blueish tint). catastrophic design ! If you like white keys or generally want to set a true RGB code, you have lost before you have begun. If setting accurate colours is important for you, this keyboard scores 1 of 5... In all, I rate this keyboard 3 of 5, a rotten score in relation to the price. Find another keyboard...
I noticed this same problem on my G910 Orion. A disappointment for sure, especially since the G815 is $200 (vs the sub $100 I paid on the G910). Not having the secondary key functions backlit is also a bit disappointing, even if it isn't really necessary to have them lit up. I just missed out on a sale, GameStop had it for $130 but of course they're all out now, and I definitely don't want to pay $200 for it (or even the $180 price on Amazon right now)
I think that the blueish "white" light is generally a problem with many (if not all) Logitech peripherals, not just with this keyboard. I have a Logitech G502 Hero mouse and it also has a "white" light with a blue tone. Before that i had a G403 mouse with the same issue.
I just destroyed my g710+ keyboard cleaning it, wiped it with a brush and water and water must've gotten thru the switches and destroyed it. Now looking for the next keyboard. Should I be concern about water on this keyboard while cleaning it
I was watching your video and while doing so, I discovered that the secondary symbols are not backlit. And then you made that your primary criticism, which I think is valid. I did not pay nearly as much as you quoted for the keyboard, and aside from that oversight, I really like this keyboard (here we go, it's dark, and the opening parens is not visilbe; its secondary to the number 9). BTW, I have the clicky version, which is not that loud actdually. The software is really good, lots of features (and not necessarily for gaming). All things considered, I think I can live with those secondary symbols not being backlighted, as I know the keys well enough to know what goes where. But this thing is just a joy to use, great typing feel.
I'm a front-end developer and I bought this keyboard primarily for use at the office actually. The secondary symbols not being backlit shouldn't bother me at all. I was just looking for something comfortable, quiet and just nicer than the generic Dell keyboard I have here.
I just got this board for $200 on bestbuy, and I wont lie it was offputting not seeing the secondary inputs of the keys, but it doesn't matter too much. I've been typing for so long, I already know what buttons do what secondary input, like & without having too look at it. 7 = & 6 = ^ 3 = # these are things we just learn after decades of board use.
@@SocialHardware very true, you're not wrong on that. But I was pleasantly surprised how much a tiny thing felt so durable. I'm used to massive bricks of a keyboard, so I was scared at first when I got this one, (was the only one Bestbuy had stocked in-store) but it's growing on me
I'm with you 100% on the secondary key lights It was the thing I loved most about my Asus laptop keyboard that I have a hard time finding anywhere else
I just got this keyboard yesterday and I really like it. I'd probably like it more if it weren't for the "G buttons" on the side that feel a bit awkward but I guess I'll get used to them eventually. I usually orient myself by using F and J so typing isn't that big of an issue but it feels awkward to not have the escape button on the absolute top left. I love that it's made of metal and the weight makes it stand super firmly on the table. Also, as someone who's only had laptops for the last 12 years, the low profile feels familiar and nice. Pressing the keys feels really "satisfying" (couldn't find a better word for it). Just the right resistance to feel light but still a bit firm. Is it worth the price though? I'm not sure. I only got it because I purchased another Logitech keyboard a few weeks ago that was defective and I got the price of that one off from this one so it didn't feel as expensive as it would have.
I think the missing characters are because of their motto of "everything you need, nothing you don't" for gaming. I don't agree with it either. Thanks for pointing that out.
@@SocialHardware I liked the old design of having the secondary characters on the side of the key and illuminated. is there not enough space for this? do these new low profile caps actually reach the board below?
Hi i got this Keyboard g815 Tactile and my pc just downloaded and want to restart to instal a logitech usb update?? Logitech - USB - 1.1.55.3120 Is this normal to get as a update? I have never got a usb update ever during my years w pc for a usb or keyboard/mouse or other?? So whjat is this update actually? i cant find anything..
Personally, it doesn't bother me that the secondary keys aren't lighted. As a product designer I can tell you their decision making on lighting only the primary key was probably to not overload it visually and maintain findability and even consistency for those main keys. However, it is worth investigating if there is a considerable amount of people who'd want them lighted. I can imagine a compromise of making the secondary keys a bit darker with less translucency. Question is if production allows such a change and if it's worth to make it.
This is the perfect keyboard TO ME. Will not like going back to any other keyboard. Only thing I don't like is that the color on the memory buttons is always yellow and you cant change it. If youve been typing for years, the secondary keys not showing isn't a problem at all, but I can see why that would put someone off.
@@cappedpluto7638 well i think this low profile g815 should be as high as like normal membrane keyboard like mk270 ? but not as thin as laptop keyboard i think ? loll
This has the same issue my old G710+ does. The marking on the the keys when you use shift are not lite up. I spend time looking for them .There difficult to see. Also had my A and S keys shaft break. To replace them you have to buy complete key set.
yes, Razer blackwidow 2016 I think is the one I have and the lighting is the same on this one, the numbers and letters are see through for RGB but the symbols and stuff are not and are really dull. A big struggle to deal with
I realized before you had said it that it was the secondary characters that aren't lit. It was easy to notice as I was using my PC in the dark. I concluded that it is a GAMING keyboard so when you look down in the dark, you see the character you need to see. I am really liking this keyboard. I bought it retail for $169.99 + tax in Dec 2022 and for the money, if I want something made a little better designed with a bit more high quality materials, I have to spend $100 more. Very happy for under $200 incl tax.
just a quick question, iv just bought it, still waiting to arrive, and my recent keyboard is a g513, and its keycaps didnt last long, about 3/4 months, bc they arent double-shot. Is the g815 double shot??? does those keycaps last for a long time??? im rlly afraid i have the same issue.
Touch typing is where its at. If you don't know where the ampersand or ? etc is is after using a computer for years, without looking, then really...... seems like a big thing in this review. I have my keyboard on its way, so looking forward to it. The rest of the review, thanks very much :)
currently i have the g910 for about 4 years but after the second year it's volumn wheel started to have an issue. it messes up volumn up and down. the same happens with the volumn wheel of my g935 headset. so i came to the conclusion that logitech have some issues with the wheels in general... does anyone know if the g815 have the same issues?
It's a solid keyboard from bottom to top but to go back to another keyboard just because of backlighting on secondary keys seems a little salty in my honest opinion. that would be like going back to my 2002 saturn because my 2021 F150 doesn't have a cassette player in it. "The 2021 F150 was almost perfect BUT it didnt have a cassette player in it so I'm going back to my 2002 Saturn so I have that option."
This keyboard is the best keyboard I have and will likely ever use, I'm using it right now, and there is nothing bad that I can say about it. I have never had any problems, the keys are very easy to press and comfortable, and I don't look at the keyboard anyway when I type, so this is the closest to the perfect keyboard that I have ever seen. This guy is so caught up in the fact that the secondary functions are not lit up, but if they were, the light would not look as good because it would throw off the perfect symmetry of the distances of the lights of the keys below. I know that it's expensive, but I believe it is well worth the cost!
OMG I almost went to JB to get this but none have demos to try it out. Thanks for pointing the lighting issue and its a dealbreaker for me .. Now I feel I might get the Corsair k70 mk2 brown or the k95 xt brown if I get a good deal...
Corsair keybooards, 2 rma's. the double typing after not even a year of use is unbearable. top of the line keyboard, and i ggget double and triple typingg keys. its annoying. i havent even had this rma for 5 months yet. im so done. btw corsair rma was a pain in the ass. :( tried every fix, just kinda stuck now.
a solution to the secondary keys not lighting up is not to have the two characters vertical but side-by-side ... but I haven't found any cap replacements for this keyboard that allow this also it doesn't have a scroll lock indicator ... the other two CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK are fixed to white and their brightness can't be adjusted the MR button could also be spaced away from the M1 M2 and M3 mode buttons the M1 M2 M3 MR GameLock buttons also are unable to be RGB adjusted
You are the first person I've found that mentioned that the secondary characters aren't backlit. What on earth?!?!?!! Thanks for the heads up. This keyboard is off my list. A keyboard this expensive should not have ANY flaws. Other keyboards out there are using these switches (Keychron for example) on wireless boards for a fraction the cost. And I double checked, they managed to backlight the secondary characters, and it's a good looking keyboard too. I kinda wanted logitech because I almost exclusively use their mice, but that's too big of an oversight for such an expensive item.
GREAT POINT on the keys that are not fully illuminated. I'm waiting for this problem to be fixed before buying any more of these. I have a G915 and have the same stupid problem for such a high end keyboard. Logitech - Please try again.
Just got this keyboard and it feels incredible to type on. Got the tactile one and its also perfectly silent which is perfect when you have to share your office / gaming cave with your gf who hates clicky keyboards lol
I don't think its that great - secondary symbols are not backlit, which sucks not only when using it in the dark, but any time when you have the lighting on, because the lit bits make the unlit bits even less visible.
I just bought this keyboard from Best Buy, while I was gaming I decided to make a macro and could not see the characters below the numbered keys, in addition the number pad echoed the same configuration. I navigated through the lighting sequences confident I would find a way to illuminate the additional characters. I wished I'd read this review before making this purchase. For this reason I would not recommend nor would I buy in retrospect. Shame on Logitech!!!! Great review btw, thanks for the great information.
I guess keyboard preferences are subjective. I love how quiet the keys are. I can type for days on this keyboard without getting tired. Unfortunately for me my hands are too big for the keyboard and I end up fat-fingering the one and apostrophe keys more often then I care to admit. Same with my shift and caps key. I'll try this keyboard for another week to see if I'll get used to it but I may change this out for the G910. Man I do like the quiet keys though.
The fix to a lack of RGB on the shift + numbers is simple... Logitech should include the keycaps so you can swap to ones where the ! " £ $ % ^ & * ( ) keys are etched out and visible with RGB on.
Just picked up one Thursday for $176.99 at Bestbuy. I love it. I’m a IT Deployment Team member and gamer at night. I’ve been looking for a sleek low profile and it’s quality is very well designed. All my lights function and no issues. I recommend it if you’re a true computer end-user instead of these Instagram wannabe techies that just buy gear to show off their new trendy hobby for the time being. I’ve had the wired Logitech G mouse for awhile now since 2016 I just like Logitech quality it lasts.
that's just lame, i mean who TF is going to type an assignment without lights on? and BTW normal people can typen everything blindfolded....... ur just making a problem to make a problem.
Got this for work AND games, as I'm not the type that switches keyboards on the go. I quickly discovered this exact issue with the lighting, and its annoying AF to be honest. At this pricetag you should have the OPTION to turn it on/off at least. Thinking about returning it.
Hi there! I am new to mechanical keyboards and am considering buying the G 815. Is it possible to easily replace the LEDs? It's important to me because LEDs darken over time due to the limited brightness life expectancy of LED technology. I plan to own the keyboard for a long time. Thx!
i have been using a razer huntsman for most of this year everytime i walked into best buy i kept messing with their display g815 and i finally bit the bullet and bought it even though this keyboard and the huntsman arent really comparible but that just me
It’s always good when a product that I like everything about the worst thing is something I don’t care about. I don’t look at the keyboard when typing even for symbols so it’s fine with me and my current keyboard has a similar issue anyway
Not one single button got pressed in this review :D How should I know how loud this is? I know, it's a gaming-thing. But there are people out there, who used a keyboard in the office and for people like me, it would be SO NICE to hear how loud a keyboard is...
I'm probably going to get this after the whole covid 19 thing ends. It has bigger or spaced out keys, and it's easy to use. Now on keyboards the keys are small or more closer together, I hope this is the right choice
6:20 Huge freaking nitpick, but respectable, its indeed much harder to find it, specially if ure in the dark. but if ure wasting 300$ on a premium keyboard, chances are you are already familiar where every single key is.

Can you change the keyboard colors at all just using the keys (and not the software)? Like preset patterns?
I don’t think so unfortunately ...
@@SocialHardware Ok, thank you.
I just got this board for $200 on bestbuy, and I wont lie it was offputting not seeing the secondary inputs of the keys, but it doesn't matter too much. I've been typing for so long, I already know what buttons do what secondary input, like & without having too look at it. 7 = & 6 = ^ 3 = #
these are things we just learn after decades of board use.
@@SocialHardware very true, you're not wrong on that. But I was pleasantly surprised how much a tiny thing felt so durable. I'm used to massive bricks of a keyboard, so I was scared at first when I got this one, (was the only one Bestbuy had stocked in-store) but it's growing on me
FIRE! the person who signed off on not putting the backlight for the symbols. Totally unforgivable
Hahahaha ruthless!
Hahaa oh that poor engineer …..oh wait , it was the bean counter’s decision lol
To be far most backlit keyboards I have used has that same thing where the secondary inputs are not back lit, so this is not a deal breaker for me.
Thanks for sharing!
Oh! As an accountant, I love that it has that scrolly thing and shortcut buttons on the side for copy/paste 😌
I'm with you 100% on the secondary key lights
It was the thing I loved most about my Asus laptop keyboard that I have a hard time finding anywhere else
THANK YOU I have this keyboard and that’s my number one pet peeve I might even return it over the secondary symbol backlights.
Does anyone know if there is a way to remap the media keys? I hate the order they're in.
Would ya say it's worth it still over a high keycap profile?
@@DVTHEFOX Yes :)
Logitech - USB - 1.1.55.3120
Is this normal to get as a update?
Thanks for sharing
the usb pass-through stopped working any fix
"Like this video if you liked it and dislike if you didn't"
Wow this is the first time I heard a RUclipsr telling people to not just like their video.
Hahaha I know it seems a bit strange but at the end of the day I value everyones opinion, it helps me to try and make better videos to help you guys.
the left side of the space bar does it work ?
obviously very personal but these are the most satisfying keys ive ever used, had for a few years, still often find myself thinking how nice they feel
Thank you, absolutely bang on with secondary keys.
I know I'm being critical but for the price you're paying it's hard not to be...
My guess is that it was a design decision. It propably would not look as good with the additional lights
Comparing it to a bulky MK, does it feel like its a laptop keyboard?
i find it funny how he liked your comment but didnt answer it
i dont have it but ill answer it for you
the height of the keyboard kinda yes
the typing is all mechanical (laptops use membrane which sucks)
@@cappedpluto7638 well i think this low profile g815 should be as high as like normal membrane keyboard like mk270 ?
but not as thin as laptop keyboard i think ? loll
This has the same issue my old G710+ does. The marking on the the keys when you use shift are not lite up. I spend time looking for them .There difficult to see. Also had my A and S keys shaft break. To replace them you have to buy complete key set.
Is this the best you can get other than the 915 wireless?
yes, Razer blackwidow 2016 I think is the one I have and the lighting is the same on this one, the numbers and letters are see through for RGB but the symbols and stuff are not and are really dull.
I bought a G915, but it was bent in the middle. Anyone else with that issue?
just a quick question, iv just bought it, still waiting to arrive, and my recent keyboard is a g513, and its keycaps didnt last long, about 3/4 months, bc they arent double-shot. Is the g815 double shot??? does those keycaps last for a long time??? im rlly afraid i have the same issue.
Yes for clicky and tactile. But not the linear.
I have a question which will probably be answered after I already purchased this keyboard but Is it worth around 100 - 120€ in 2022 ?
Touch typing is where its at. If you don't know where the ampersand or ? etc is is after using a computer for years, without looking, then really...... seems like a big thing in this review. I have my keyboard on its way, so looking forward to it. The rest of the review, thanks very much :)
My only issue with it is that you cant reprogram any F keys to a custom macro or bind it..Or am i missing something?
Couldn't make it five seconds into this vid due to that audio. Sorry man
To me very important is that this keyboard can process more than 2 keystrokes at a time. This seems very important to me for gamers.
That lighting problem at 6:00 is a MAJOR issue.
just got this for under 100$ looks nice !
great vid man! You were a bit quiet tho?
currently i have the g910 for about 4 years but after the second year it's volumn wheel started to have an issue. it messes up volumn up and down. the same happens with the volumn wheel of my g935 headset. so i came to the conclusion that logitech have some issues with the wheels in general... does anyone know if the g815 have the same issues?
I have just recently bought the G815 but the main problem for me are the wobbly Keycaps, they just dont feel very good...
Please someone tell me if you've found a comfortable wrist rest for this....
Can you make everything red in the leds ?
@@uaregon1931 yes
OMG I almost went to JB to get this but none have demos to try it out. Thanks for pointing the lighting issue and its a dealbreaker for me .. Now I feel I might get the Corsair k70 mk2 brown or the k95 xt brown if I get a good deal...
@@SocialHardware Did you end up returning the G815. Seems no stock anywhere for the Corsair boards, want to get it before tax time ;)
Corsair keybooards, 2 rma's. the double typing after not even a year of use is unbearable. top of the line keyboard, and i ggget double and triple typingg keys. its annoying. i havent even had this rma for 5 months yet. im so done. btw corsair rma was a pain in the ass. :( tried every fix, just kinda stuck now.
I got 815 linear, the serial number starts from 1920MR - the keyboard is not detected by LGHub, it goes dark immediately.
I have a really good question can you switch the key caps because I wanna get different key caps
At the moment there really aren't aftermarket low profile keycaps.
Did they fix the light issue or is it still a thing?
@@SocialHardware Nutz, thanks.
a solution to the secondary keys not lighting up is not to have the two characters vertical but side-by-side
... but I haven't found any cap replacements for this keyboard that allow this
also it doesn't have a scroll lock indicator
... the other two CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK are fixed to white and their brightness can't be adjusted
the MR button could also be spaced away from the M1 M2 and M3 mode buttons
the M1 M2 M3 MR GameLock buttons also are unable to be RGB adjusted
I just bought this but noticed the windows Z doesn’t work for undo
Since you mentioned the secondary functions on keys, I looked some more keyboards. The ones I saw were the same.
I kinda wanted logitech because I almost exclusively use their mice, but that's too big of an oversight for such an expensive item.
amazing keyboard worth every penny, the typing experince is just wow logitech made a great job on this one if you want a great keyboard buy this one
does your Ghub connect ; -; ////
@@arumosvasiaki9212 maybe a little late reply lol, but yes, it does B)
GREAT POINT on the keys that are not fully illuminated. I'm waiting for this problem to be fixed before buying any more of these. I have a G915 and have the same stupid problem for such a high end keyboard. Logitech - Please try again.
When review starts?
Just got this keyboard and it feels incredible to type on. Got the tactile one and its also perfectly silent which is perfect when you have to share your office / gaming cave with your gf who hates clicky keyboards lol
Same here, I didn't want a noisy keyboard and happy that the tactile is quiet
Great review btw, thanks for the great information.
just picked mine up today used in like new condition for $80 USD. Love it!
The secondary characters not illuminated is a deal breaker for me.
that is crazy. that is the entire reason for the back light. I was actually thinking about buying this but now i'm going to hold off.
I’m glad I’m not the only who thought this was an issue! Thanks for watching 😌
I’ve had the wired Logitech G mouse for awhile now since 2016 I just like Logitech quality it lasts.
that lack of backlit on secondary keys is a dealbreaker for me. Thanks for mentioning it. This keyboard is off my list.
Glad I could help!
no idea what are you talking about i have all lights on bruuh and you see the faken secondary keys perfeclty
that's just lame, i mean who TF is going to type an assignment without lights on? and BTW normal people can typen everything blindfolded.......
ur just making a problem to make a problem.
Got this for work AND games, as I'm not the type that switches keyboards on the go. I quickly discovered this exact issue with the lighting, and its annoying AF to be honest.
At this pricetag you should have the OPTION to turn it on/off at least. Thinking about returning it.
Just got this for around $200 in South Africa, love the feel of the keys when typing but yeah it's baffling why the secondary keys aren't lit up
i have this keyboard and i would not say its worth it
How about going on about really important. Like, how to install that software. NO ONE tells us how to do that and it's not installing on my PC.
Had to watch the video twice, kept getting distracted by this dude's beautiful eyes.
Nice, yeah I mean the typing experience was nice, I just couldn't justify the price..
You made a whole video about a keyboard and never showed yourself typing on it
6:20 Huge freaking nitpick, but respectable, its indeed much harder to find it, specially if ure in the dark.
but if ure wasting 300$ on a premium keyboard, chances are you are already familiar where every single key is.
