It can't read them, since this would require sending back their entire content as tokens. The commands it outputs have the potential to write to files though.
I generate api keys on openai, since the first time i installed sgpt ive never gotten anything other than errors. Tried many keys, tried echoing to the openai api key variable, tried adding keys many times to the sgpt config, always get too many requests error. I even signed up for chatgpt premium and same bs. No idea why my expetience is so much different from everyone else apparently. Literally copying and pasting a key and it will not work for me ever across 3 computers.
A ChatGPT plus subscription isn't necessary for API access. So long as you have an API key and developer access configured you should be good to go. ShellGPT will prompt you if the required environment variable isn't set so it sounds like something else might be causing the issue you're facing.

ShellGPT itself is open source, but you'll need an OpenAI API key to use it, so there is a cost.

Really? For GPT3.5 It's only a few cents a day for me. Works out as a lot less than a copilot sub.
