I've been hoarding crap for years and years. But there comes a time when you just have to start clearing it (I prefer to use it up than throw it away if I can). The phone cable is really great for this kind of thing too. It's light and very flexable, plus the stuff I used takes solder really well.

The thing is that a multicart in the true sense of the term is something that I don't think I'll be able to pull off with this system. The best I can hope to do is a modded cart that will at best look like a piece of test equipment. It will have a bank of switches, not to choose games though, but to set the cartridge configuration for the game programmed onto the ROM chip currently plugged into it. Should be a whole lot of fun though ;)
Hey there! Love the vid! I feel that the 7800 doesn't really get enough love. I wasn't aware of how easy it is to mod a NES controller to work with a 7800. I'll definitely be doing that. I noticed that you removed the RF module; did you also remove the channel switch next to it? I've come up with a means to restore the B&W/ Color switch for 2600 games that utilize it (such as Xonox's Ghostmanor). All you have to do is connect pin 21 on the RIOT chip to ground, and the game will register the switch. I've modded the channel switch on my 7800 and connected the central post to RIOT's pin 21 and severed the trace on the left side of the switch (when viewing the console from the front). This will not affect 7800 mode, but you will need to keep the switch to the left; otherwise, the game will stay paused once you start it.
Sorry for the late reply, I've only just seen your comment. You're right, the 7800 is an under appreciated machine. I too was surprised how easy the controller mod was to do, I've since bought a TV game type thing built into a good two button joystick that I hope to mod for use with the 7800 (if I ever get the time to do it). The RF can I havn't removed from the system, It's a French version so came with no RF but a SCART socket in place of it. That's a good mod you've made for the B/w/Colour switch, simple yet effective, I may give it a try but I'll have to mount a switch in the case somewhere. Thanks Rudy. The controller mod really works well and you can use it on any computer that takes an Atari style joystick (I gave it a shot on my C64 and it works great). The Nes controller is quite confortable to use as well so that's always a bonus ;)
Sega controllers also work as well no modding needed. There was even a arcade style joystick(fight stick) that was released that had a cord for the nes and the sega that using the sega cord works as well. I had gotten a 7800 for Christmas back in 98 if I am remembering correctly and I loved the system though in my area not too many games were able to be found that were 7800 carts so I do not have many but I do have my 2600 games that I play on it as well and for some games the arcade joystick is the best option though I do also have the trackball for games like centipede.

I bought my first Atari in 97'. I was working in a second hand shop and somebody brought in a 7800 with six games (all 2600 games). I bought it the next day (retro was seen as rubbish at the time and the boss let me have it all for very little). I played the heck out of it for a few weeks and then gave it to a buddy who had a son who wanted a playstation (that they could not afford). I don't know if he was very happy with the 7800 though. I don't know if you've seen the video I made on modding a 7800 cart to play other games on it. It's fun to do but a cheaper and more reliable option would be a 7800 multicart of some kind. Lol, way to close with a dad joke! I have a question about the controller. Will it also work on a C64? I use an Atari controller on my C64 now. I have an adapter to use an Atari controller with my Speccy. It would be great If I could get a Nintendo controller to work on all those systems, since it was my favorite 8 bit controller. I also have an adapter to use an Atari controller with my CoCo2 but that doesn't work the best all the time. Great Video.
Good question, it roused my curiosity so I tried the Nes converted controller out on my C64 this evening and it works great. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with your Spectrum or Coco adapter either. The Coco's are a bit funny with the adapter though. Some games work great and some don't (usually because they were programmed to use an analogue joystick and not a digital one). Best get used to the jokes, plenty more on the way ;)
I never liked the controllers that came with the 7800 at all. What I did is built from scratch my own controller from a project case and buttons. Because the 7800 version of Robotron requires two joysticks to play it like you would in the arcade, I also made a jig to place both sticks together so they would not move. I'll have to try to find a pic of those.
What I'd like to do next is make myself a pair of racing paddles. I didn't realise that there were different types of paddle until I watched a video about Atari racing games. They use a rotary sensor in place of a pot, so they can be turned in both directions to infinity. The jig for Robotron sounds cool, it's a game I must try out.

Essentially what they are is a bunch of contacts in a circle that alternate between one side or the other of the 3 wires with a wiper that determines which direction the knob is being turned. Any machine with 2 digital pins can use an encoder because the reading is not only digital but done in software. A paddle on the other hand is a variable resistor that is read through an analog to digital converter built into the 2600 chips and one simply reads the result from a port. Robotron is a very good port for the 7800.

Good luck with the diy controllers. You know that you're not restricted to using NES game pads for this, right? If you want to really challenge yourself you could get yourself an old 8 bit digital joystick and convert it for the 7800. It's a lot more work but will give you a way better experience game play wise. That was a great joke by the way, Oooh Aar me hearty ;)
